PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Review

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters makes a great case for second chances.  I haven’t read Rick Riordan‘s Percy Jackson novels, but the 2010 adaptation of the first book, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, was abysmal.  There wasn’t one good thing about the film, and it felt like the series would go the way of other stillborn fantasy franchises.  But in the demigod’s second adventure, director Thor Freudenthal find a place for the young hero by tapping into a solid PG adventure movie that takes the maturity of its cast and pairs it with fun action pieces, charming humor, and an enthusiasm that gives Percy Jackson a rare second chance at a first impression.

20th Century Fox has released a new featurette for Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.  The follow-up finds Percy (Logan Lerman) and his friends venturing to a mythical land known as the Sea of Monsters to retrieve a golden fleece that is essential to the survival of his home and other demigods.  This is the first bit of marketing that has me interested in the film since it shows how this time around the mythological aspects carry over into our world rather than mythological creatures simply coming to Percy like in the first movie.  There’s still plenty of emphasis on those creatures, but I like that the sequel looks like it’s willing to have more fun with the myths such as Hermes (Nathan Fillion) running UPS-like delivery service.

Hit the jump to check out the featurette.  The film also stars Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Stanley Tucci, Douglas Smith, Anthony Head, Leven Rambin, Missi PyleYvette Nicole Brown, and Mary BirdsongPercy Jackson: Sea of Monsters opens in 3D on August 7th.

This summer will feature the return of Logan Lerman as a demigod in the title role of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Also returning for the sequel is Brandon T. Jackson, who plays Percy’s friend, Grover.  A new addition this time around is Clarisse, one of Percy’s Camp Half-Blood adversaries, played by Leven Rambin (The Hunger Games).  Our early sneak peek at the footage from the first act features both actors getting equal parts action and comedy in the Thor Freudenthal-directed picture.  In a recent interview, both Jackson and Rambin talked about working with the new cast members and directors, a near miss in one of their fight scenes and how close the movie gets to the Rick Riordan book.

Also starring Alexandra Daddario, Jake Abel, Nathan Fillion, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Head and Douglas SmithPercy Jackson: Sea of Monsters opens August 7th.  Hit the jump to watch.

International Trailer for PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Goes Heavy on Action and Shows Most of the Movie

An international trailer has been released for Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.  The follow-up finds Percy (Logan Lerman) and his friends venturing to a mythical land known as the Sea of Monsters to retrieve a golden fleece that is essential to the survival of his home and other demigods.  The trailer shows the giant action on display to the point where I’m wondering where a sequel could possibly go.  The villain is the father of the gods, Kronos, with an assist from the previous film’s villain, Luke (Jake Abel).  How do you top the father of the gods?  In any event, like the first movie, there’s a hodgepodge of Greek mythology that brings in the Cyclops, the Golden Fleece, and other icons.  I’m still not sold on the picture even though this trailer basically gives everything away.  But with new director Thor Freudenthal at the helm and no need to go through the origin story, perhaps the sequel will be far superior to the first film.

New Trailer for PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Starring Logan Lerman and Nathan Fillion

A new trailer Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters has been released.  The follow-up finds the titular Percy (Logan Lerman) and his friends venturing to a mythical land known as the Sea of Monsters to retrieve a golden fleece that is essential to the survival of his home.  Thor Freudenthal (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) takes over directing duties from Chris Columbus this time around, and this trailer actually looks pretty fun.  The creature designs are neat and the action sequences look to be visually exciting, and we also get an extended look at Nathan Fillion as Hermes.  Lerman really impressed with his performance in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and he already looks more in command in Sea of Monsters than he did in the first film.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Stanley Tucci, Douglas SmithLeven Rambin, Missi PyleYvette Nicole Brown, and Mary Birdsong.  Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters opens in 3D on August 16th.

The first trailer Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters has been released.  The first Percy Jackson received mixed critical response and lukewarm box office, but the sequel seems to be retaining the same tone even though Thor Freudenthal (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) has replaced Chris Columbus at the helm.  Hopefully, the sequel will have a better plot, but since this trailer appears to give away a lot of the movie, it already looks overcrowded with the best moment belonging to Nathan Fillion, who plays Hermes.

Production is currently underway on one of the more high-profile pilots of this season, and some debut images from the set have landed online.  The Shield and Last Resort vet Shawn Ryan serves as executive producer and showrunner on the potential Beverly Hills Cop series, and last night he shared a few images from the set that gave us our first look at the return of Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley alongside his son, played by Brandon T. Jackson.  The show’s focus is centered on the young Aaron Foley and is described as a police procedural with a comedic element.  Murphy appears in the pilot and will potentially have a recurring role on the show should CBS pick it up to series.

We recently reported that a Beverly Hills Cop TV series had landed at CBS with franchise star Eddie Murphy attached for at least the pilot.  Previous reports indicated that the Shawn Ryan (The Shield) show would center on Axel Foley’s son Aaron in a blending of a buddy-cop and fish-out-of-water procedural.  Now it looks as if Brandon T. Jackson (Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief) is in final negotiations to join the series as the young Foley.  Ryan will write the pilot for the Sony Pictures Television production.  Hit the jump for more on Jackson and Beverly Hills Cop.

You’re driving down the street, and it’s suddenly blocked off.  You notice these weird yellow signs with nonsensical letters or numbers.  There’s unusual glow lighting up a neighborhood you can’t usually see from your house.  What you might have here is a film company shooting in your town.  It happens a lot, and you never know where they might pop up…until now.

The following is a semi-comprehensive list of films currently shooting, what they’re shooting, and where they’re shooting.  We’ll be telling you where you might get to see the very famous, the kinda famous and (if all goes well) the soon-to-be famous. While we can’t list every single movie, television show, or student film in production, you’ll get a pretty good idea of what the heck is going on where all those people are buzzing about.  Want to know where in the world are Matt Damon, Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Woody Harrelson, and Leonardo DiCaprio? Alison Brie, Nicholas Braun and Brandon T. Jackson Join Ensemble Comedy GET A JOB

CBS Films announced a few more additions to the ensemble comedy Get a Job today. Community star Alison Brie, Nicholas Braun (Red State), Brandon T. Jackson (Tropic Thunder) and Jay Pharoah (Saturday Night Live) have been added to a cast that includes Bryan Cranston, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Miles Teller (Footloose). The multi-generational comedy centers on four recent college graduates “who discover that their lofty expectations and the realities of adulthood are two very different things.” Teller leads the cast as a guy who finds his true calling after struggling through an entry-level job, and Braun, Mintz-Plasse and Jackson will play Teller’s three friends who each find different careers. Brie will play “one of the group’s sharp-witted coworkers” and Pharoah plays a character that starts his own recession-proof business. Jesse Eisenberg had been looking to make a cameo role in the pic, but the press release (predictably) makes no mention of his involvement. Hit the jump for more, including the full press release.

RED TAILS Trailer 3

The latest trailer for the World War II film Red Tails finally has found the right balance between drama and action.  The movie is based on the real-life story of the first all African-American squadron and their fight to defend our country.  They were given second-hand planes and the most dangerous missions, and it makes their story all the more incredible.  The new trailer is the most exciting so far because it while it still has the grandiose language, it feels more comfortable when couched in an exciting action film (and that action looks spectacular).

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film was produced by George Lucas and stars Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Bryan Cranston, Brandon T. Jackson, and Nate ParkerRed Tails opens January 20, 2012.

A new trailer Anthony Hemingway’s World War II action-drama Red Tails. The pic tells the true story of the Tuskeegee Airmen, the first African American military aviators in the United States armed forces. The group was given second-rate aircraft and supplies, but shined through the adversity and accomplished some of the most dangerous missions of World War II. I’m still not sold on the film as a whole (the cheese factor comes through a bit too often), but the visual effects and aerial battles look top-notch. Hopefully there’s more character development to be found in the full feature.

New Trailer and Poster for RED TAILS

20th Century Fox has released a new trailer and poster for Anthony Hemingway’s World War II action-drama Red Tails.  The film tells the true story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all-black squadron in American history.  Despite given second-hand planes and equipment, the squadron still managed to accomplish some of the war’s most dangerous missions.  I far prefer this new trailer to the previous one.  Instead of heaping on the historical importance (and it was indisputably significant to American history, but we already know it before we’ve even see the movie), this new trailer plays up the characters and the action.

Trailer and Release Date for Producer George Lucas’ RED TAILS

The first trailer has been release for the action-drama Red Tails.  Produced by George Lucas and directed by Anthony Hemingway, the movie is based on the true story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all-black African-American combat squadron who fought in World War II.  Red Tails has been in development for years but now it looks like it has finally become a reality and that reality is filled with cool aerial combat and grandiose speeches.  No one in this trailer makes a statement that is not of monumental importance to the dignity of our nation and the history of the human race.  But that’s what the trailer is designed to sell: action and gravitas but I hope the film is, at least where the dialogue is concerned, a little more grounded.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Bryan Cranston, Brandon T. Jackson, and Nate Parker.  Red Tails opens January 20, 2012.
