Here’s something you don’t hear very often: “It was a good week for strong women at the box office.” Up against two new, male-driven action movies, actress Jessica Chastain claimed first and second place with Mama and Zero Dark Thirty. Chastain’s fellow Golden Globe winner, Jennifer Lawrence, took third with Silver Linings Playbook – ahead of Gangster Squad and the big name boys that launched debuts on Friday. Both Broken City (with Mark Wahlberg) and The Last Stand (with Arnold Schwarzenegger) were disappointments – though, fittingly, Arnold’s was on a much more epic scale.

 Title Weekend Total
1.  Mama $28,122,000 $28.1
2.  Zero Dark Thirty $17,600,000 $55.9
3.  Silver Linings Playbook $11,351,000 $55.3
4.  Gangster Squad $9,110,000 $32.2
5.  Broken City $9,000,000 $9
6.  A Haunted House $8,330,000 $29.9
7.  Django Unchained $8,243,000 $138.3
8.  Les Miserables $7,800,000 $130.3
9.  The Hobbit $6,405,000 $287.3
10.  The Last Stand $6,300,000 $6.3

Friday Box Office: MAMA Tops ZERO DARK THIRTY with $10 Million to Start MLK Weekend

Two films starring newly-minted Golden Globe winner Jessica Chastain topped Friday’s box office. Zero Dark Thirty, the film that brought Chastain her Best Actress win on Sunday, was expected to run neck-and-neck with Mama, the new PG-13 horror feature, at this weekend’s box office. Instead, with a better-than expected $10 million estimate from 2,647 locations on Friday, Mama should easily claim the MLK weekend title with over $25 million. Zero Dark Thirty, last weekend’s number one film, will take second with around $15 million through Sunday. Chastain’s one-two sweep upstaged the weekend’s R-rated action debuts: Broken City and The Last Stand. Both underwhelmed – though with its estimate of $3 million from 2,620 locations, Broken City at least made it into Friday’s top five. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand was not so lucky. With just $2 million from 2,913 locations, The Last Stand will finish the weekend near the bottom of the top ten. Finally, Silver Linings Playbook expanded into 2,523 locations on Friday, propelling the R-rated Oscar nominee into the top five on its tenth weekend in theatres. Check back tomorrow for full details.

Title Friday Total
1. Mama $10,000,000 $10
2. Zero Dark Thirty $4,600,000 $42.9
3. Broken City $3,000,000 $3
4. Silver Linings Playbook $2,954,000 $46.9
5. Gangster Squad $2,665,000 $25.7

Opening January 18 is director Allen Hughes’ (The Book of Eli) political thriller Broken City.  The film stars Mark Wahlberg as a private detective who is hired to identify the lover of a powerful politician’s wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones).  Russell Crowe plays the morally ambiguous politician.  The film also stars Jeffrey Wright.  For more on the film, here’s the first clip and the brand new trailer.

Over the weekend I sat down with Wahlberg for a fun interview.  We talked about how he got involved in Broken City, putting together the great cast, the way he produces, and upcoming projects like Pain & Gain, Ted 2, and Transformers 4.  However, while it was great to talk about his film projects, the best part was hearing him talk about the New England Patriots and getting to attend the game last week with his son.  While I thought about editing out his comments on the Patriots after the disappointing loss last night, I thought some of you might like to see it.  Hit the jump to watch.

20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for director Allen Hughes’ (The Book of Eli) political thriller Broken City.  The film stars Mark Wahlberg as a private detective who is hired to identify the lover of a powerful politician’s wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones), with Russell Crowe playing the shady politician.  This trailer focuses quite a bit more on the film’s plot, teasing an enticing power play between Wahlberg and Crowe’s characters.  We also see a bit more of Zeta-Jones’ character, though her intentions aren’t entirely made clear.  The real draw, though, seems to the face-off between Wahlberg and Crowe, and I’m eager to see the two go toe-to-toe when the full film hits theaters.

The first trailer for director Allen Hughes’ (The Book of Eli) political thriller Broken City has been released.  Mark Wahlberg stars as a private detective who is hired to identify the lover of a powerful politician’s wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones).  Russell Crowe plays the morally ambiguous politician with plenty of gusto, and there look to be some fun scenes where Crowe and Wahlberg go toe-to-toe.  The soundtrack on the trailer is a bit distracting and the January release date isn’t super promising, but this could be a nice little thriller with some interesting performances.

Some debut images from a couple of upcoming releases have hit the web.  First up, the first two images from director Allen Hughes’ (The Book of Eli) political thriller Broken City highlight stars Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Mark Wahlberg.  The story centers on a private detective (Wahlberg) who is hired to identify the lover of a powerful politician’s (Crowe) wife.  Zeta-Jones is onboard as said unfaithful wife, and Wahlberg—who also serves as a producer on the film—compares the pic’s elements of “really strong characters [and] plot points you didn’t see coming” to Roman Polanski’s classic Chinatown.  The pic opens on January 18th, 2013.

We’ve also got the first images from the horror film Mama, which was directed by Andres Muschietti based on his own short film.  Jessica Chastain and Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau topline the thriller as a couple who take in their neice and nephew after the children mysteriously surface five years after disappearing on the day of their mother’s murder.  The supernatural pic comes from producer Guillermo del Toro and also opens on January 18th, 2013.  Hit the jump to take a look at the images.

Kyle Chandler Joins Political Thriller BROKEN CITY Opposite Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg

Fresh off his fatherly role in this summer’s Super 8, Kyle Chandler is set to join Allen Hughes’s thriller Broken City. The film stars Mark Wahlberg as a private detective hired to identify the lover of a powerful politician’s (Russell Crowe) wife. Things take a turn when the lover winds up dead. Catherine Zeta-Jones is onboard as the unfaithful wife, and Variety reports that Coach Taylor Chandler will be playing “the nuts and bolts component” of a mayoral candidate’s (Barry Pepper) team. I think Chandler brings an inherent charm and earnestness to every role he takes on, so his addition to this impressive ensemble is much welcomed. The actor just completed work on Ben Affleck’s thriller Argo.

The film also stars Jeffrey Wright, Griffin Dunne (After Hours), James Ransone (Inside Man), Justin Chambers (Grey’s Anatomy), Natalie Martinez (Death Race), and Alona Tal (Supernatural). Broken City opens January 18th, 2013.

The plot follows the characters as they get past the turmoil of a tragic event.

Alona Tal (Supernatural) and Natalie Martinez (Death Race) will star opposite Mark Wahlberg in Broken City. The Allen Hughes picture follows an ex-cop private eye (Wahlberg) who is investigating a murder while a mayoral candidate (Russell Crowe) is embroiled in an election scandal. The film also stars Catherine Zeta-Jones. Hit the jump for more on both projects.

Catherine Zeta-Jones is joining the cast of Allen Hughes’ (From Hell) noir drama Broken City. The film stars Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe, and centers on a private detective (Wahlberg) who is hired by the mayor of New York (Crowe) to uncover the identity of the mayor’s wife’s lover. When the lover turns up dead, the detective sets out to expose a much wider conspiracy. Deadline reports that Zeta-Jones will play the less-than-faithful wife of Crowe’s character. This is Hughes’ first solo feature directorial effort, as he previously co-directed all of his films with his brother Albert. The script for Broken City was written by Brian Tucker, and will be produced by Randall Emmett, Stephen Levinson, and Wahlberg himself. Production begins in November in New York.

Zeta-Jones just wrapped Adam Shankman’s 80’s centered musical Rock of Ages starring Tom Cruise, as well as the comedy Playing the Field featuring Gerard Butler. She’ll also be seen in Stephen Frears’ Lay the Favorite alongside Bruce Willis and Vince Vaughn. Crowe is currently filming Man of Steel and is set to shoot the musical Les Miserables early next year.

Russell Crowe Joins Mark Wahlberg in Allen Hughes’ BROKEN CITY

Russell Crowe will star opposite Mark Wahlberg in Allen Hughes’ noir drama Broken City.  As we previously reported, Wahlberg is playing an ex-cop turned private detective who is hired by the mayor (Wahlberg) to see if the mayor’s wife is cheating on him. When the wife’s lover ends up dead, the private detective becomes embroiled in the mayor’s scandalous affairs.  Deadline reports the “scandalous affairs” involves the mayor and some shady real-estate dealings.  I don’t know why crimes involving real estate make great noir tales, but they do.  I guess it goes to a corruption of the American dream of owning property.

Wahlberg recently wrapped shooting on Contraband, which is set to open on January 13, 2012.  Crowe is playing Jor-El in Man of Steel and recently shot RZA’s kung-fu flick The Man with the Iron Fists.  No start date has been announced for Broken City.  The film is budgeted at $60 million and comes from a 2008 Black List script by Brian Tucker.
