Last weekend, the Mondo crew headed to Houston, Texas for a very special screening of Kinji Fukasaku’s 2000 masterpiece, Battle Royale. The screening (which initially seemed to be the latest Mondo Mystery Movie, but…er, wasn’t) was apparently quite the success: everyone we spoke with who attended had a grand old time, and all involved seemed very happy with the Bryan Lee O’Malley/Kevin Tong screenprint that resulted from the event. But what about everyone else, all the people who couldn’t be in Houston for Mondo’s latest screening/poster party? Good news awaits 425 of those people after the jump!

Last week a post on the Alamo Drafthouse blog revealed that the Mondo crew would be hosting a special screening at a Houston-area Drafthouse on February 16th. The setup was familiar to anyone who’s ever attended a Mondo Mystery Movie: buy a ticket, show up, find out what movie you’re there to see, watch said movie, and then collect a limited-edition screenprint based on that film on your way out the door. Based on this description, many believed that next weekend’s screening actually was the next Mondo Mystery Movie.
Turns out, it’s not! On Feb. 16th Mondo will screen Battle Royale in Houston, and every ticket sold includes a special poster created by the dynamic duo of Kevin Tong and Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley. Wanna know everything else we know at the moment? Meet me after the jump, folks.

Call it a rematch. The filmmakers and cast of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World are hitting the road again, this time to celebrate the film’s release on Blu-ray and DVD. You may remember that the film made an impressive tour when the movie was released back in August (they may have even appeared on your local news). Said co-writer and director Edgar Wright: “To say thank you to the fans who have supported us, I am very excited to bring special screenings and autograph signing events with me and the cast to Los Angeles, Toronto, Boston and New York.”
Be sure to say thank you for the great film if you live in those cities, or just say thanks by picking up the movie on Blu-ray or DVD when it hits on November 9th. Hit the jump for more details on the upcoming tour.

If there are two fundamental truths that life has taught us it’s: 1) Do good unto others, and you will be rewarded, and 2) Edgar Wright is a directing god. Wright is the director of the jaw-droppingly great Hot Fuzz, and this year’s just-as-good-if-not-better Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, set for a November 9th release on Blu-ray/DVD. And so we have a plethora of extras that more or less spotlight the innovative techniques used for the film’s unique style. While there’s not much in the form of Wright himself, the videos give us a sneak peek at what we can expect from the Blu-ray/DVD release. Check out the clips after the jump.

Mezco Toyz has provided the first look at their upcoming Scott Pilgrim figures based on the comics by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Mezco will be releasing two figures. The other figure wears a jacket 50/50 pack of the open mouth/closed mouth head. The full-court marketing press for Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World continues as Cartoon Network’s [adult swim] will be airing a short animated film dubbed Scott Pilgrim vs. The Animation on August 12th at midnight. /Film reports that the short will cover Scott’s high-school relationship with Sex Bob-omb’s sardonic drummer Kim Pine that was featured in volume two of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s series but didn’t end up in the movie. Universal, O’Malley, and Wright quickly got on board after hearing the network’s pitch. Wright even managed to secure the voice acting talent of Michael Cera and Alison Pill reprising their roles from the film and getting co-stars Mae Whitman and Jason Schwartzman to provide the voices for Lisa and Simon Lee, respectively (although O’Malley says voice casting Whiteman as Lisa was his idea).
Hit the jump to learn more about this very cool project. Scott Pilgrim vs. The Animation will air on Cartoon Network’s [adult swim] in two parts between 12:00 and 12:30 am and then the following day (when Scott Pilgrim vs. The World comes out) on adultswim.com, and on the [adult swim] and Scott Pilgrim Facebook pages.

Universal has released six movie clips from director Edgar Wright’s (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Based on the awesome graphic novel by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the movie has an amazing cast featuring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Alison Pill, Brandon Routh, and Jason Schwartzman. I caught a screening at Comic-Con a few days ago and am happy to report the film is brilliant. Wright has somehow managed to do the impossible as he’s brought the universe and characters of Scott Pilgrim to life and it feels real and perfect. Trust me, if you’re a fan of the comic, you’re not going to believe how awesome it is. And even if you know nothing about Scott Pilgrim, don’t worry, you’re still going to love this film. It’s that good.
Anyway, for a taste of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, hit the jump and watch 6 clips! Scott Pilgrim gets released August 13.

“Some people say Ferris Beuler meets Kill Bill, but that doesn’t quite describe it all,” says director Edgar Wright about his masterpiece. “I wanted it to feel kind of like a 13-year-old’s brain exploding.”
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is taking San Diego Comic Con by storm, and making avid fans out of anyone who is lucky enough to partake of its “epic epicness”. With each showing, Wright convinces audiences of the fact that he is, indeed, a creative genius. Hit the jump for quotes from the cast and crew

Ubisoft has premiered a trailer for their upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. The World video game at this year’s E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo). They’ve also released four minutes of gameplay and it all looks so sweet. It perfectly recalls the old-school gaming references that run throughout Bryan Lee O’Malley’s books and (as seen in the trailer) Edgar Wright’s upcoming film.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and the gameplay footage. The game is due out in August for the PlayStation Network. While I prefer Xbox Live Arcade, I’ll probably end up shelling out coins for both.

The geekgasm that is Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is almost here. On Monday we finally got to see the new trailer for the film, directed by Edgar Wright and based on the Bryan Lee O’Malley comics, and today we’ve got the first TV spot. And once those start showing up, you know it’s on like Donkey Kong.
The new spot [via O'Malley's twitter feed] ran during last night’s Glee, and runs about 50 seconds. It includes plenty of new shots, scene snippets and lines of dialogue. I’d venture to guess this will air again during the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday.

On January 1, 2009, director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) began a year-long photoblog. It just so happened that 2009 was also the year when he began production on his next film, an adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comic book series Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The combination of one of my favorite directors creating an adaptation of one of my favorite comics sent me in a frenzy. The frenzy had me bugging Steve every two weeks telling him that if there was a set visit, I wanted to go. I had to. Taking a look inside of what Wright would do with this material was a chance I didn’t want to miss.
I got that chance immediately following last year’s Comic-Con. Less than 48 hours after the Con ended, I was in Toronto and sitting on the steps of a pyramid in Club Kaos. Hit the jump to read about my visit to set of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead walks into the room and I’m meeting Ramona Flowers. It’s probably got something to do with the hair. Winstead plays the beautiful and enigmatic Ramona Flowers in Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. In the books by Bryan Lee O’Malley, one of Ramona’s trademarks is that she’s constantly dying her hair different colors. So when Ms. Winstead walked into the room during my visit to the set of the film last July, she was sporting green hair. It looked good.
But Ramona is more than a hairstyle. We spoke with Winstead about how O’Malley helped give her some background on her character, which was especially valuable since he had written the final book yet. We also talked about working a stunt-heavy film like this one, the film’s music, and working with Wright, among other topics. But I think what you’ll take away most from this interview is about how Ramona will be portrayed in the film, and it’s much deeper than just green hair.

Apparently, you can get offered a role in a major motion picture over Facebook. Don’t believe me? Just ask Johnny Simmons. He was able to land the role of Young Neil (third from the left in the image above) in Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World with a valuable assist from the popular social networking site.
In addition to wielding the power of Facebook, we spoke with Simmons about his jealousy of not getting to do any stunts in the film, although he then told us a pretty cool move he got to do involving a Rickenbacker guitar. We also talked about his thoughts on the music in the film, working with Wright, and how the books along with advice from author Bryan Lee O’Malley helped set the baseline for the character.

Earlier tonight, Production Weekly tweeted that Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, “is planning to return to Toronto for 3 additional days of photography.” We spoke with Wright and he elaborated on this vague update on the production. Wright said that they’re doing three days of pick-ups, meaning that they’re doing more nips and tucks. Said Wright, “[W]e are not even redoing one full scene, nor any action, just some bits and bobs and new jokes and beats that I wrote with [co-writer Michael] Bacall & [author Bryan Lee] O’Malley.” What I find more exciting is that Wright said some of the tweaks are because there’s some material from the sixth and final volume of the comics that is too good to leave out.
So if you’re paranoid that the film needs to be salvaged or anything like that, rest easy. The word coming out of the test screenings is highly positive. Wright also adds that his previous films, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz also had a few days of re-shoots. If you can’t appreciate an old woman getting kicked in the face, then you can’t appreciate an Edgar Wright pick-up. You also probably can’t appreciate comedy. Or joy. Or any human emotion, really.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World hits theaters on August 13th. Hit the jump for the official synopsis and Wright’s full statement regarding the re-shoots.

We usually don’t cover comic book news, but since I’m a Scott Pilgrim maniac and I hope some of our readers are too, I had to report that the sixth and final volume of the series has been announced.
Bryan Lee O’Malley’s amazing series will conclude with Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour. The book will hit stores in North America on July 20th. Three weeks later, Edgar Wright’s adaptation of the series, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, will hit theaters. As we’ve previously reported, the ending to the book will differ from Edgar Wright’s film since Wright began production before O’Malley began writing volume six.
Hit the jump to check out the cover art for Finest Hour and a corresponding wallpaper in hi-res plus the full press release. Also, mark your damn calenders: Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour – July 20th. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World – August 13th.
