Our first look at Ralph Ziman’s adaptation of Kite has come online in the form of a trailer and several clips.  Based on the anime of the same name, the story stars India Eisley (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) as Sawa, an orphaned girl who is trained by her father’s partner (Samuel L. Jackson) to be a vigilante assassin.  The anime is notable for its extreme violence, and Ziman appears to have retained that aspect along with a stylized look that should give the adaptation some nice pop.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and clips.  The film co-stars Callan McAuliffe (I Am Number Four) and currently doesn’t have a release date, but presumably it will hit theaters sometime this year.

The sudden passing of director David R. Ellis came as quite a shock, but it looks as though his final unfinished project will still come to fruition.  Ralph Ziman has come on to take over as the director on Ellis’ remake of the 1998 Japanese anime Kite, which was gearing up to begin production before Ellis passed away.  The story centers on a young girl whose parents are murdered in a gruesome double homicide and is taken in by two corrupt detectives who train her as an assassin.  Samuel L. Jackson is still set to star, and it was announced this weekend that India Eisley (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) and Callan McAuliffe (I Am Number Four) have now joined the cast.

Eisley will be playing the young girl at the center of the story, Sawa, and McAuliffe is set to play Oburi, a childhood friend of Sawa’s who sets out to save her life but also may harbor some dark secrets.  Filming is set to begin in South Africa later this month.

Emerging as one of Hollywood most sought-after young actors, 16-year-old Aussie Callan McAuliffe is currently preparing to start his work as Young Jay Gatsby in Baz Luhrmann’s 3D telling of the classic American story The Great Gatsby, due out in theaters on Christmas Day 2012, amidst sword fighting training, martial arts and ballet work for his role as archangel Uriel in Paradise Lost, adapted from the epic Biblical poem and shooting in January 2012 for a scheduled 2013 release.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, from Australia where he is going to shoot both films, Callan McAuliffe talked about what appealed to him about both projects, some changes in The Great Gatsby that could surprise audiences but that he thinks they will appreciate, that even though he’s playing a younger version of Leonardo DiCaprio he doesn’t think he looks like him at all, and what he thinks the 3D will add to the experience for audiences. He also talked about how he’s relying on director Alex Proyas’ vision for Paradise Lost when it comes to playing an archangel, that he’s looking forward to his scenes with Djimon Hounsou, and how he’d like to model his character after Johnny Depp, playing more alternative types of characters. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Callan McAuliffe Will Play a Young Leonardo DiCaprio in Baz Luhrman’s THE GREAT GATSBY

Callan McAuliffe slice

I’m going to use this opportunity to express my unhinged excitement for Baz Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby. With a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, and recently announced Isla Fisher, Luhrman’s take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel is shaping up to be one hell of a motion picture. Joining the fun (er, drama) is Callan McAuliffe, who recently sported a supporting role in this year’s I Am Number Four (he was also in Rob Reiner’s underappreciated film Flipped in case anyone was wondering). According to Variety, the actor will play a young Jay Gatsby (or a young DiCaprio) in the film. It’s been a while since I read the book, but I don’t recall any flashback scenes involving Jay and Daisy. What’s more, he really doesn’t resemble DiCap circa 1993, back when he was killing grasshoppers with Johnny Depp. Still, I guess with Luhrman shooting the film in 3D, anything is possible.

I AM NUMBER FOUR Review

by     Posted 3 years, 249 days ago

If you wanted to make Twilight but without the personality, you would have a film akin to the cynical cash-grab that is I Am Number Four.  Sure, Twilight‘s personality is creepy and misogynistic, but it’s genuinely offering something to a particular audience even though I find that “thing” (idolization of possessive stalkers) repulsive.  I Am Number Four, on the other hand, is a vapid shell of a presumptuous franchise.  The film never bothers to establish compelling characters or compelling situations.  Every time I Am Number Four could do something interesting or inventive, it scurries away to the most predictable, bland solution it can find.  There’s nothing redeeming about I Am Number Four, from the script, to the action, to the visuals, to the performances, to presumably the craft services.  It rarely even shows the courtesy to be laughably bad.  It simply carries on and on and on and assumes the audience is enraptured in the adventures of dull, attractive teenagers.

Callan McAuliffe Interview I AM NUMBER FOUR

by     Posted 3 years, 281 days ago

If you’ve been reading Collider over the last year, you know we’ve been covering director D.J. Caruso’s I Am Number Four since the project was still being put together.  Starring Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand, and Callan McAuliffe, the suspense-thriller centers on nine aliens who escaped the destruction of their planet and landed on Earth, but are now on the run from those who destroyed their home world.  Alex Pettyfer plays number four and he’s the next one being targeted for death.  While the first teaser trailer showed you with some cool images, the full trailer does a great job at explaining the story and introducing us to the characters and their special powers.

Anyway, DreamWorks recently held a long lead press day and I got to participate in a roundtable interview with McAuliffe. In the film, he plays a close friend of Pettyfer.  During the interview he talked about his character, how almost everyone cast in the film has an accent, how he got into acting, his last movie Flipped, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to read or listen to what he had to say.  I Am Number Four gets released February 18.

I AM NUMBER FOUR Edit Bay Visit; Steve Watches 20 Minutes of Footage and Also Interviews Director D.J. Caruso

by     Posted 3 years, 321 days ago

With director D.J. Caruso’s I Am Number Four almost finished, DreamWorks invited a few online reporters to visit the editing room to check out about twenty minutes of footage and also talk with Caruso.  Since we’ve been covering the movie since its inception, you know the film stars Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand, and Callan McAuliffe and the plot centers on nine aliens who escaped the destruction of their planet and landed on Earth, but are now on the run from those who destroyed their home world.  Alex Pettyfer plays number four and he’s the next one being targeted for death.  While the first teaser trailer showed you with some cool images, the just released full trailer does a great job explaining the story and introducing us to the characters and their special powers.

Anyway, in the editing room Caruso showed us the opening ten minutes, a few scenes towards the middle, and then he showed us some of the awesome action in the 3rd act.  Hit the jump for a more detailed description including an interview with Caruso:

Teresa Palmer Interview I AM NUMBER FOUR; Plus Updates on TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT and Kieran Darcy-Smith’s SAY NOTHING

by     Posted 3 years, 322 days ago

While moviegoers have seen a lot of Teresa Palmer over the past few years in films such as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Bedtime Stories, for her upcoming sci-fi action thriller I Am Number Four, we’re going to see a new side: action star.  That’s because in director D.J. Caruso’s upcoming movie (produced by Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay), Palmer plays a mysterious outsider who eventually kicks some serious ass on screen.

A few months ago I got to visit the set of I Am Number Four while the production was shooting in Pittsburgh (read about it here).  On set I was able to do a roundtable interview with Palmer (click here to read) where she talked about the challenges of getting ready to film all the action and she also revealed who she plays in the movie and why it’s a cool part.  But with the new trailer getting released, DreamWorks recently held a long lead press day and I got to sit down with Palmer again to talk about the film.  While she covered some of the same subjects in the recent interview, she also talked about seeing some finished footage and her thoughts, the training, some of the cool stuff she got to do and how challenging it was to perform, and she gave some updates on Take Me Home Tonight (her film with Topher Grace, Anna Faris, and Dan Fogler) and revealed she’s about to start filming a movie for director Kieran Darcy-Smith called Say Nothing - which will also star Joel Edgerton.  More after the jump:

Dianna Agron Interview I AM NUMBER FOUR; Plus an Update on GLEE Including Her Thoughts on the Super Bowl Episode

by     Posted 3 years, 322 days ago

When director D.J. Caruso cast Dianna Agron (Glee) as the lead in his sci-fi action thriller I Am Number Four, he took a chance on a rising young star.  After all, while Glee was getting a lot of press, there was always the chance the show would flame out.  But if you follow the ratings, you know Glee is bigger than ever, and the casting of Agron looks like a great move.

But let me back up a second.  If you’ve been reading Collider, you know we’ve been covering I Am Number Four since the project was first announced.  But with DreamWorks releasing a brand new trailer and a release date fast approaching (February 18, 2011), I recently got to attend a long lead press day with the cast and after the jump you can read or listen to my roundtable interview with Dianna Agron.  During the interview she talked about how she got started acting, how crazy her schedule is, filming I Am Number Four, what’s going on with Glee, and her thoughts on the big Super Bowl episode:

First Full Trailer for D.J Caruso’s Sci-Fi Action Thriller I AM NUMBER FOUR

by     Posted 3 years, 322 days ago

DreamWorks has released the first full trailer for director D.J. Caruso’s I Am Number Four and you can check it out after the jump. The film stars Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand, and Callan McAuliffe and the plot centers on nine aliens who escaped the destruction of their planet and landed on Earth, but are now on the run from those who destroyed their home world.  Alex Pettyfer plays number four and he’s the next one being targeted for death.  While the first teaser trailer teased you with some cool images, the full trailer does a really good job explaining the story and introducing us to the characters and their special powers. If I Am Number Four wasn’t on your radar, this trailer might change that.

But before getting to the trailer, I got to check out about 20 minutes of the film yesterday at DreamWorks and later tonight you can expect a full report on what I saw with some quotes from director D.J. Caruso. They showed us the opening 5 or 10 minutes and then a bunch of the action from the 3rd act.  It looked really cool. More tonight.
