The fact that we all saw it coming doesn’t make it any less impressive.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier has set a new opening weekend record for April with its estimated debut of $96.2 million.  That tops the opening of Thor: The Dark World, last November, and beats Captain America: The First Avenger by 48%.  For proof of how dominant Captain America was this weekend, just take a look at the difference between first and second place: poor, poor Noah.

Friday Box Office: CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Targets April Record After $37 Million Opening Day

by     Posted 258 days ago

After collecting $10.2 million from its Thursday night previews, Captain America: The Winter Soldier earned an estimated $37 million from 3,938 locations on Friday – setting a new record for the highest domestic opening day in April.  That means that The Winter Soldier should also secure a new weekend record for the month with close to $95 million.  April’s previous box office champ was Fast Five, which took in $34.3 million on its first day and $86.2 million for its first weekend in 2011.

After Thursday’s estimate, it looked like Captain America: The Winter Soldier would have a shot at hitting $100 million in its debut: a number that would put the First Avenger in the company of Batman, Iron Man and other blockbuster superheroes who hit triple digits on their first weekends.  This morning, however, it looks like Captain America will fall short of that mark – though it will still best the $85.7 million debut of Thor: The Dark World last November.  The Winter Soldier has already earned almost $100 million from its international markets since last weekend, which means the Disney/Marvel sequel will be close to $200 million in worldwide grosses after ten days.  That’s already over half of the final global total of 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger – and that’s before China releases its estimate for the sequel’s opening this weekend.  We’ll have full details and the weekend top ten tomorrow.

 Title Friday Total
1.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier $37,041,000 $37
2.  Noah $4,913,000 $60.2
3.  Divergent $4,180,000 $105.2
4.  God’s Not Dead $2,223,000 $27
5.  The Grand Budapest Hotel $1,825,000 $28.9

Stanley Tucci Says Hayley Atwell Will Be Making a Cameo in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

by     Posted 1 year, 309 days ago

Last month, we reported that Hayley Atwell would not be reprising her role as Peggy Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  In an interview with TimeOut, she said she wouldn’t be returning.  However, Steve interviewed her Captain America co-star Stanley Tucci earlier today for Jack the Giant Slayer, and it looks like her comments may have been a little misdirection or the script has changed since her interview.

Hit the jump for more.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens in 3D on April 4, 2014.

If that wasn’t enough, eFX will also be accepting pre-orders starting October 9th for their first full-scale, screen-accurate movie prop replicas.  The first items up for grabs are Thor’s helmet from Thor and his hammer Mjolnir from The Avengers.  Hit the jump to check out images of all the collectibles and for more information.

First Preview Trailer for Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled Blu-ray Set

by     Posted 2 years, 173 days ago

Marvel’s The Avengers just officially crossed the $600 million mark domestically, making it the third highest grossing film of all time both domestic and worldwide.  It’s safe to assume that plenty of those who saw the film multiple times in the theater will be grabbing the Blu-ray once it hits shelves this fall, but Marvel is also releasing a 10-disc 6-movie Blu-ray collector’s set that includes all of the studio’s superhero movies thus far.  A preview trailer for the set has gone online, and while it doesn’t unveil the exclusive special features or even the box art, it’s a pretty exciting mash-up of footage from Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Avengers.

Hit the jump to watch the preview trailer.  More information on the set is poised to be announced on July 15th, but no official release date has been revealed just yet.  The Avengers hits DVD and Blu-ray on September 25th.

In the event that you haven’t picked up all of the previous Marvel movies separately, the studio has a beast of a Blu-ray collection headed our way.  We previously reported that a 10-Disc special edition set was in the works, and now Amazon has provided a listing for Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled.

Hit the jump for more details.  There’s currently no official release date or price for Avengers Assembled, but Amazon says more information about the set will be announced on July 15th, which makes a 2012 release highly likely.  The Avengers will hit Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Download on September 25th.  If Avengers Assembled does hit this year.

Tommy Lee Jones Talks MEN IN BLACK 3, CAPTAIN AMERICA, Spielberg’s LINCOLN, Favorite Movies, and More

by     Posted 2 years, 211 days ago

Opening this weekend is the third film in the Men in Black franchise.  Barry Sonnenfeld returns as director and the story finds Will Smith’s Agent J traveling back in time to save Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent K.  In addition to Bill Hader as Andy Warhol, Josh Brolin plays a younger version of Jones’ character and does an incredible job.  You’ll absolutely think you’re watching Jones as a young man.  Men in Black 3 also stars Jemaine Clement, Alice Eve, and Emma Thompson.  In addition, make-up effects artist Rick Baker returns to the franchise and you can see some of his creature work here.  For more on the film, here’s all our previous coverage.

Last week I got to speak with most of the cast and every day this week I’ll be posting a new interview.  Up first is Tommy Lee Jones.  While known as a tough interview (which he is), when Jones had something to say his answers were interesting and I even got him to smile a few times.  We talked about Men in Black 3, Captain America: The First Avenger, Steven Spielberg‘s Lincoln, his favorite movies, how many takes does he like to do as an actor and as the director, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Saturn Award Nominations Announced; HUGO and HARRY POTTER Lead with 10 Nominations Each

by     Posted 2 years, 293 days ago

Now that the Oscars are finally over, the Saturn Awards have come along and graced with nominations that are actually fun/infuriating-in-their-own-way.  There’s some cross-over between Oscars and Saturn Awards this year with Hugo racking up 10 nominations.  But since the Academy doesn’t want to recognize genre movies, they ignored Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.  The Saturns are giving Mr. Potter his due, and the final chapter of the saga also nabbed 10 nominations.  Also doing well on the film side were Super 8 (8 nominations), Captain America: The First Avenger (7 nominations), The Adventures of Tintin and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (6 nominations each).  As for TV, Breaking Bad led with six nominations.  I can live with all of these (although eight nominations for Super 8 is pushing it).

Wait.  I just saw that there were no nominations for Drive.  Never mind.  The Saturn Awards are sham.  Hit the jump for the full list of nominees.  Winners will be announced on June 20th (a long ways off, but meant to hit in the heart of the summer movie season).

Visual Effects Oscar Category Narrowed Down to 10 Choices; Contenders Include HARRY POTTER, CAPTAIN AMERICA, and THE TREE OF LIFE

by     Posted 2 years, 349 days ago

We’re just a little less than two months away from the 84th Annual Academy Awards, and today the choices in yet another category have been pared down. AMPAS announced today that 10 films remain in contention for the Best Visual Effects award, with films like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Hugo, and The Tree of Life making the cut. The pretty clear frontrunner in this race is Rise of the Planet of the Apes (and rightfully so), but there’s much to admire in the 10 films that have been shortlisted.

Though Terrence Malick’s existential drama The Tree of Life is heavy on the naturalistic visuals, the extended “history of the universe” sequence is gloriously enchanting and features some breathtaking visual effects work (dinosaurs!), so I’m happy to see that it hasn’t been overlooked. All members of the Academy’s visual effects branch will view 10-minute excerpts from each of the 10 shortlisted films, after which they’ll vote to nominate five pics for the Academy Award. Hit the jump to read the full press release, which includes all 10 singled-out films. The Oscars will be presented on February 26th.

2012 Art Directors Guild Award Nominees Include HUGO, HARRY POTTER, DRIVE, and GAME OF THRONES

by     Posted 2 years, 350 days ago

I like to see the guild awards, because the specificity allows for nominees that you won’t see on more general lists.  The Art Directors Guild is especially interesting because they separate the films into three categories: period, fantasy, and contemporary.  The 15 nominees highlight everything from Oscar favorites Hugo and The Artist, to crowd-pleasers Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and Captain America, to poorly received films like Cowboys & Aliens and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.  There’s a similar contrast in the TV nominees between the classy HBO programs you’d expect (Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, and Mildred Pierce) and the critical punching bags American Horror Story and The Playboy Club.  The full list of nominees is after the break.

97 Original Scores Up for Oscar; DRIVE and ATTACK THE BLOCK Ruled Ineligible

by     Posted 2 years, 361 days ago

As the 84th Academy Awards move closer, we’re starting to get a better sense of how things will pan out. We recently shared the 39 songs that will contend for the Best Original Song category, and now the Academy has announced the 97 original scores eligible for the Best Original Score award. AMPAS is notoriously picky when it comes to eligibility in this category, and as we feared the scores for both Drive and Attack the Block have been deemed ineligible. Also disappointing is the ineligibility of Alexandre Desplat’s mesmerizing score for The Tree of Life.

While it’s upsetting to see some of the year’s best work side-lined, there’s plenty to be happy about. I was a huge fan of Howard Shore’s work in Hugo and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s score for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, as well as The Chemical Brothers’ brilliant work in the criminally underseen Hanna. Hit the jump for the full list, as well as who I think will make the cut.

39 Songs Contend for Best Original Song Oscar; Nominees Include THE MUPPETS and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

by     Posted 3 years ago

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced today that 39 eligible songs will contend for the Best Original Song Oscar this year. Important to note is that a relatively recent rule change states that songs must be judged in the capacity that they appear in each film. In early January the voting body will get together and watch clips from each eligible movie in which the 39 songs are featured, after which they will determine the nominees. The list of eligible songs include three tracks from The Muppets, Sigur Ros frontman Jonsi’s song “Gathering Stories” (which director Cameron Crowe co-wrote) from We Bought a Zoo, and composer/songwriter/eight-time Oscar-winner Alan Menken’s “Star Spangled Man” from Captain America: The First Avenger. I’m partial to Jonsi’s work or “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets, but we’ll see how the Academy’s taste stacks up towards the end of January.

Hit the jump to check out the full list of eligible songs. The 84th Academy Award nominations will be announced on January 24th.
