Joel David Moore Talks CBGB, Playing Joey Ramone, Finding the Human Being behind the Rock Star, His First Concert and His Latest Directorial Project

by     Posted 1 year, 67 days ago

CBGB tells the story of how the ever-determined Hilly Kristal (Alan Rickman) borrowed money to buy a watering hole in what was then New York’s skid row.  By giving a stage to live musicians, the bands that came were primitive and unrehearsed, but sparked a DIY punk movement with their raw sound and changed the world of music forever.

At the film’s press day, actor Joel David Moore, who plays The Ramones frontman Joey Ramone, spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about how he came to embody the enigmatic singer, his approach to finding the human being behind the rock star, what it was like to see himself in the full costume, his most memorable day on set, the first concert he went to that left a lasting impression on him, and his latest directorial project, the dark comedy Killing Winston Jones.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

At the recent L.A. press day, Collider got the opportunity to chat with co-stars Ashley Greene (who plays Hilly’s daughter, Lisa) and Johnny Galecki (who plays music manager Terry Ork).  They talked about how much they knew about CBGB and the music scene that came out of there, prior to doing the film, what made them want to play their characters, the first live concert that they went to, their most fun day of shooting, and what it was like to work with Alan Rickman.  Hit the jump to watch the video or read the transcript.  CBGB opens in theaters on October 11th.

First Trailer for CBGB Goes Inside the Famous New York Club that Featured “50,000 Bands and 1 Disgusting Bathroom”

by     Posted 1 year, 135 days ago

The first trailer from Randall Miller’s CBGB takes viewers on a tour through the disgusting, dangerous and wildly popular New York nightclub that played host to the punk movement’s greatest bands.  Alan Rickman (Harry Potter series) leads the picture as struggling club owner  Hilly Kristal, who had a vision of bringing country, bluegrass and blues music to the lower Eastside venue which ultimately became a proving ground for rock-and-roll and punk bands.  Rickman is bolstered by a supporting cast that includes Ashley Greene, Donal Logue, Ryan Hurst and Johnny Galecki.  The real fun of this flick appears to be found in those playing famous musicians and band members, such as Mickey Sumner as Patti Smith, Joel David Moore as Joey Ramone, Kyle Gallner as Lou Reed, and the Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins as Iggy Pop.  Look for CBGB to land in theaters sometime this fall and hit the jump to watch the trailer.

Ryan Hurst Talks KING & MAXWELL, How Much Research He Did for His Character, His Passion for Directing, CBGB, and More

by     Posted 1 year, 158 days ago

Developed by Shane Brennan (NCIS: Los Angeles), the TNT drama series King & Maxwell follows private investigators Sean King (Jon Tenney) and Michelle Maxwell (Rebecca Romijn), characters originally seen in the best-selling series of books by author David Baldacci.  The two are both former Secret Service agents who use their unique abilities and their quite apparent differences to get a leg up on conventional law enforcement.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Ryan Hurst – who plays Edgar Roy, a high-functioning autistic savant and proven valuable asset to the team, with an extraordinary ability to see patterns and numerical sequences – talked about how he came to be a part of this show, jumping right back into work after his time on Sons of Anarchy was done, how much research he’s done for the role, and the evolving character dynamic.  He also talked about the experience of making CBGB, about the New York City punk-rock scene and the famous nightclub, and working with Alan Rickman, as well as his desire to direct.  Check out what he had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

Mickey Sumner Talks FRANCES HA, Working with Director Noah Baumbach, Shooting in New York City, THE BORGIAS, CBGB, and More

by     Posted 1 year, 220 days ago

Mickey Sumner shines in a fantastic supporting role playing Sophie, the lifelong best friend of Greta Gerwig’s titular heroine, in Frances Ha, co-written by Gerwig and director Noah Baumbach.  Shot in black and white against the backdrop of New York City, this modern comic fable about the 20-something generation explores love, friendship, self-doubt, and finding your way in life.  Sumner and Gerwig’s natural on-screen chemistry makes their characters funny and relatable and fuels some of the film’s most insightful and best comedic moments.

I recently landed an exclusive interview with Sumner who talked to me about the liberating experience of playing a role without a script, how she identified with her character, working with an amazing cast, Baumbach’s directing style, her reaction to seeing the film premiere at Telluride, why she loves being in front of the camera, and what she learned interning during summer holidays with her godmother, costumer designer Colleen Atwood, on the sets of Beloved and Planet of the Apes.  The daughter of Sting and Trudie Styler, Sumner also discussed landing her first serious acting role in The Borgias, playing out her rock star fantasy as Patti Smith in CBGB, and her new romantic comedy, Misconnections.  Hit the jump to read more.

Ashley Greene Talks THE APPARITION and CBGB

by     Posted 2 years, 118 days ago

Opening tomorrow is writer-director Todd Lincoln‘s The Apparition.  The film centers on a young couple played by Ashley Greene (Twilight) and Sebastian Stan (Captain America) who “discover they are being haunted by a presence that was accidentally conjured during a university parapsychology experiment.  The horrifying apparition feeds on their fear and torments them no matter where they try to run. Their last hope is an expert in the supernatural, Patrick (Tom Felton), but even with his help they may already be too late to save themselves from this terrifying force.”

The other day I interviewed Greene here in Los Angeles.  We talked about how she prepared for the role, what was it like to collaborate with director Todd Lincoln, filming in Berlin and southern California, and her upcoming film CBGB where she plays Lisa Kristal, the daughter of club owner, Hilly Kristal, who is played by Alan Rickman.  Hit the jump to watch.

Who Wants to Be an Extra on IRON MAN 3, MACHETE KILLS, GROWN UPS 2, THE WALKING DEAD and More?

by     Posted 2 years, 185 days ago

Now that we’ve told you what’s filming where, instead of just watching the action from behind the police barricades, perhaps you’d like to be in front of the cameras.

If that sounds like something you might be interested in pursuing, let us point you in the right direction towards the people who are hiring this key element to any movie.  They’re referred to in different ways: background artists, atmosphere and the most common sobriquet—extras. Pretty much every film needs them, and some more than others.  If Iron Man is saving the population of entire cities, they can’t all be in the other room.  Audiences need to see hundreds of people running and screaming in the midst of the controlled chaos.  When Jackie Robinson makes history by taking the field, it would be a pretty hollow effort if no one is in the stands to cheer him on.  You get the idea.  So are you ready for your close-up?  Hit the jump for more on Iron Man 3, Machete Kills, CBGB, Grown Ups 2, The Smurfs 2, The Walking Dead, and more.

Malin Akerman Talks ROCK OF AGES, the Stalled Linda Lovelace Movie, and Playing Debbie Harry in CBGB

In the feature film adaptation of the smash hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages, small town girl Sherrie (Julianne Hough) and city boy Drew (Diego Boneta) meet on the Sunset Strip in 1987, in pursuit of their Hollywood dreams. With the hits of Def Leppard, Foreigner, Journey, Poison, REO Speedwagon, Twisted Sister and so many more, to help tell the story, their rock ‘n’ roll romance hits its fair share of speed bumps on the road to fame.

At the film’s press day, actress Malin Akerman, who plays a Rolling Stone reporter that catches the eye of rock god Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise), talked about her love of ‘80s music, being a fan of ear licking, having Tom Cruise sing to her butt, trying not to crack up during takes, the weirdest experience she’s ever had with a journalist, and what she got to take home from the set. She also talked about how the Linda Lovelace movie she was set to do seems to currently be stalled, and that the next thing she’ll be doing is playing Debbie Harry in CBGB. Check out what she had to say after the jump:
