Mickey Sumner shines in a fantastic supporting role playing Sophie, the lifelong best friend of Greta Gerwig’s titular heroine, in Frances Ha, co-written by Gerwig and director Noah Baumbach.  Shot in black and white against the backdrop of New York City, this modern comic fable about the 20-something generation explores love, friendship, self-doubt, and finding your way in life.  Sumner and Gerwig’s natural on-screen chemistry makes their characters funny and relatable and fuels some of the film’s most insightful and best comedic moments.

I recently landed an exclusive interview with Sumner who talked to me about the liberating experience of playing a role without a script, how she identified with her character, working with an amazing cast, Baumbach’s directing style, her reaction to seeing the film premiere at Telluride, why she loves being in front of the camera, and what she learned interning during summer holidays with her godmother, costumer designer Colleen Atwood, on the sets of Beloved and Planet of the Apes.  The daughter of Sting and Trudie Styler, Sumner also discussed landing her first serious acting role in The Borgias, playing out her rock star fantasy as Patti Smith in CBGB, and her new romantic comedy, Misconnections.  Hit the jump to read more.

Ashley-Greene-Apparition-CBGB-interview-slice

Opening tomorrow is writer-director Todd Lincoln‘s The Apparition.  The film centers on a young couple played by Ashley Greene (Twilight) and Sebastian Stan (Captain America) who “discover they are being haunted by a presence that was accidentally conjured during a university parapsychology experiment.  The horrifying apparition feeds on their fear and torments them no matter where they try to run. Their last hope is an expert in the supernatural, Patrick (Tom Felton), but even with his help they may already be too late to save themselves from this terrifying force.”

The other day I interviewed Greene here in Los Angeles.  We talked about how she prepared for the role, what was it like to collaborate with director Todd Lincoln, filming in Berlin and southern California, and her upcoming film CBGB where she plays Lisa Kristal, the daughter of club owner, Hilly Kristal, who is played by Alan Rickman.  Hit the jump to watch.

Who Wants to Be an Extra on IRON MAN 3, MACHETE KILLS, GROWN UPS 2, THE WALKING DEAD and More?

whats-filming-where-slice

Now that we’ve told you what’s filming where, instead of just watching the action from behind the police barricades, perhaps you’d like to be in front of the cameras.

If that sounds like something you might be interested in pursuing, let us point you in the right direction towards the people who are hiring this key element to any movie.  They’re referred to in different ways: background artists, atmosphere and the most common sobriquet—extras. Pretty much every film needs them, and some more than others.  If Iron Man is saving the population of entire cities, they can’t all be in the other room.  Audiences need to see hundreds of people running and screaming in the midst of the controlled chaos.  When Jackie Robinson makes history by taking the field, it would be a pretty hollow effort if no one is in the stands to cheer him on.  You get the idea.  So are you ready for your close-up?  Hit the jump for more on Iron Man 3, Machete Kills, CBGB, Grown Ups 2, The Smurfs 2, The Walking Dead, and more.

Malin Akerman Talks ROCK OF AGES, the Stalled Linda Lovelace Movie, and Playing Debbie Harry in CBGB

rock of ages malin akerman

In the feature film adaptation of the smash hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages, small town girl Sherrie (Julianne Hough) and city boy Drew (Diego Boneta) meet on the Sunset Strip in 1987, in pursuit of their Hollywood dreams. With the hits of Def Leppard, Foreigner, Journey, Poison, REO Speedwagon, Twisted Sister and so many more, to help tell the story, their rock ‘n’ roll romance hits its fair share of speed bumps on the road to fame.

At the film’s press day, actress Malin Akerman, who plays a Rolling Stone reporter that catches the eye of rock god Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise), talked about her love of ‘80s music, being a fan of ear licking, having Tom Cruise sing to her butt, trying not to crack up during takes, the weirdest experience she’s ever had with a journalist, and what she got to take home from the set. She also talked about how the Linda Lovelace movie she was set to do seems to currently be stalled, and that the next thing she’ll be doing is playing Debbie Harry in CBGB. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

Rupert Grint Joins THE NECESSARY DEATH OF CHARLIE COUNTRYMAN and CBGB

rupert-grint-the-necessary-death-of-charlie-countryman

Though Ron Weasley will always be the defining role of his career, Rupert Grint isn’t short on post-Harry Potter employment. The young Brit has lined up a pair of pretty intriguing projects; first up comes confirmation that he’s climbed aboard Fredrik Bond’s action-comedy-romance The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman. While the details of his role are unknown at this point, the film stars Shia LaBeouf as a hapless fellow that falls in love with a woman (Evan Rachel Wood) who’s lorded over by an unhinged mob boss (Mads Mikkelsen). Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter) and Til Schweiger (Inglourious Basterds) are set to play LaBeouf’s deceased (but still communicative) mother and a Serbian war criminal respectively. All told, it’s a pretty fantastic assemblage of on-screen talent. More than anything, I’m looking forward to Mads “Le Chiffre” Mikkelsen busting out his “insanely violent” side; I simply never tire of watching that man commit unspeakable deeds.

The script for Countryman comes from Project X scribe Matt Drake. It’s currently filming in Romania. Hit the jump for more, plus details on Grint’s other new project, CBGB.
