Andy-Samberg-The-Lonely-Island-interview-slice

With director Lee Toland Krieger‘s romantic comedy/drama Celeste and Jesse Forever opening today, I recently got to sit down with Andy Samberg for an extended video interview.  In the film, Samberg stars with Rashida Jones as a divorcing couple who are having trouble maintaining their intense friendship while living together and pursuing other relationships.  In addition, Jones co-wrote the script with Will McCormack, and it’s a great mix of realistic comedy and drama.  It’s definitely recommended.

Anyway, if you’re a fan of Andy Samberg, you’re about to be very happy.  During my exclusive interview we talked about his entire career, what’s coming up, and so much more.  Some of the subjects we covered were Saturday Night Live, whether he’ll still do any digital shorts, Sundance, Hot Rod (and why it’s out of print on Blu-ray?!), getting to do “Get in the Cage” with Nicolas Cage, his upcoming BBC3 TV series, Cuckoo, the future of The Lonely Island and if they would ever tour, Arrested Development, and we even talked about Lord of the Rings.  Hit the jump to watch.

Chris Messina Talks RUBY SPARKS, CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER, ARGO, THE MINDY PROJECT, DAMAGES, and More

Chris Messina is ‘the jet fuel that makes Ruby Sparks work,’ according to directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris whose new movie opens in theaters on July 25th. When Calvin (Paul Dano), a struggling writer, discovers his powerful imagination has conjured up a real life character named Ruby (Zoe Kazan), the only person he can really trust with the implausible truth is his brother, Harry (Messina), who at first is convinced Calvin is having some kind of spectacular breakdown and then begins to relish the sublime possibilities. Messina brings an ineffable Everyman quality to the role that gives the story’s fantastical elements a foundation in ordinary reality and grounds the film for audiences.

Messina, who is perhaps best known for his role in another distinctive twist on the romantic comedy, Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, sat down with me for an exclusive interview to talk Ruby Sparks. He told me how the unusual script and the opportunity to work with Kazan and Dano drew him to the project, how his two sons and his older brother helped inspire his character, how he had fun bonding with Dano over golf, and what it was like working with two directors. Messina, who is one of the busiest actors in Hollywood and can currently be seen on Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom, also discussed his upcoming films Celeste and Jesse Forever and Argo directed by Ben Affleck, his new Fox comedy The Mindy Project, and what fans can expect on Season 5 of Damages.

First Trailer and Poster for CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER Starring Andy Samberg and Rashida Jones

by     Posted 2 years, 124 days ago

The first trailer and poster for director Lee Toland Krieger‘s romantic comedy/drama Celeste and Jesse Forever have been released.  The film stars Andy Samberg and Rashida Jones as a divorcing couple who are having trouble maintaining their intense friendship while living together and pursuing other relationships.  The trailer isn’t particularly funny, but it’s clear that the heart of the story is the dramatic aspect of the break up.  The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to fairly positive reviews (you can read Matt’s review here), and I’m interested in seeing how far the film goes in exploring the ending of a long-term relationship that doesn’t only signal the break-up of a romantic relationship, but also the separation of two best friends.  Jones co-wrote the script with Will McCormack so here’s hoping for the best.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Elijah Wood, Chris Messina, Emma Roberts and Ari GraynorCeleste and Jesse Forever opens on August 3rd.

Sundance 2012: Matt’s Review Scorecard and Wrap-Up

sundance-2012-scorecard-slice

Like I did last year, I had a great time at the Sundance Film Festival.  It’s tough to complain about weather conditions or getting around when you have the privilege to watch and discover new movies all day.  Even better, plenty of Sundance 2012 films turned out to be pretty damn good.  For me, there weren’t any quite as excellent as Martha Marcy May Marlene or Project Nim from last year, but those movies set an incredibly high bar.  Many of my peers felt they saw something truly special with Beasts of the Southern Wild and I can understand the love even if it didn’t hit me with as much emotional impact.  Most of my peers also loved Liberal Arts and Sleepwalk With Me, and I’m sorry I missed those.  But all in all, the festival ran as smoothly as last year, the volunteers (especially those in the press tent) were awesome, and it’s always a joy to hang out with people from other movie websites.

Hit the jump for my festival scorecard where you can see an organized list of my ratings for the movies I saw (although I highly encourage you to read the full review rather than just glance at a letter).  While this is my wrap-up, Steve will be posting his Sundance interviews throughout the week so keep an eye out for those.

Sundance 2012: Fox Searchlight Picks Up THE SURROGATE; Sony Pictures Classics Acquires CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER

by     Posted 2 years, 273 days ago

Two of the more high profile films featured at this year’s Sundance Film Festival have now secured distribution. Fox Searchlight will handle the drama The Surrogate, while Sony Pictures Classics has picked up the comedy Celeste and Jesse Forever. The Surrogate is quickly becoming one of the more crowd-pleasing pics at the fest, picking up a considerable amount of buzz with each screening. The film stars John Hawkes as a paraplegic polio victim who sets out to find a sex surrogate (Helen Hunt) wiling to take his virginity. Fox Searchlight acquired worldwide rights to the flick, which also stars William H. Macy.

Additionally, Sony Pictures Classics has acquired distribution rights to Celeste and Jesse Forever. Co-written by and starring Rashida Jones, the film centers on a couple that decides to break up. The impressive cast is rounded out by Andy Samberg, Emma Roberts, and Elijah Wood. Sundance 2012: CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER Review

Rashida Jones is a funny, talented actress who has been confined to supporting roles.  She’s the best friend, the girl-friend, the co-worker, but never the leading lady.  Jones has sought to right that wrong by co-writing herself a fantastic role in the comedy Celeste and Jesse Forever.  The script not only provides a showcase for her dramatic range and comic timing, but also her ability to write hilarious dialogue and situations.  But in a bizarre twist, her performance ends up carrying her script’s stumbling blocks and clumsy ending.  Even when she’s her own worst enemy, Jones comes out the victor.

In the dark comedy Lucky, actress Ari Graynor takes on her first co-lead role as Lucy, the object of affection for Ben (Colin Hanks), who just won $36 million in the lottery. Ben has been crushing on Lucy since childhood, but she marries him strictly for the cash. Just as she’s beginning to have genuine feelings for him, Lucy discovers that he’s a serial killer whose victims all resemble her and, as the newlyweds try to make things work, she learns that covering up for him is not as easy as it seems.

During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Ari Graynor talked about how ready she was to take on more responsibility in a film, the crazy ride that her character takes, how great the whole process of working with this cast was, and why she finds herself drawn to comedy. She also talked about her upcoming roles in The Sitter, opposite Jonah Hill, What’s Your Number?, opposite Anna Faris, Celeste and Jesse Forever, with Rashida Jones, and My Mother’s Curse, with Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand.
