DRACULA UNTOLD Review

dracula-untold-review

For a movie with the title “Dracula Untold“, it’s a story that’s painfully vague.  We all know Bram Stoker’s classic monster.  Some may know that the character was loosely based on Prince Vlad the Impaler.  Director Gary Shore and screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless seemed content to keep it at that with a bit of an emphasis on Drac’s family and then mostly relying of CGI bats.  The film plays like a treatment rather than a real script.  It’s lean to the point of being anemic as Vlad’s transformation into Dracula doesn’t feel tragic but rather a slog towards the inevitable peppered with lame action and stock characters.  Dracula Untold proves some stories aren’t worth telling.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley Try to Crack the Enigma Code in U.K. Trailer for THE IMITATION GAME

StudioCanal UK has released a new The Imitation Game trailer online.  The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, a brilliant cryptanalyst whose expertise cracked Germany’s “Enigma code” and helped turn the tide of World War II for the Allies, but his homosexuality made him a target of persecution.  This U.K. trailer goes heavy on painting the movie as a thriller, and that’s not misleading.  Part of the movie’s pull is that it does play like a spy flick.  However, it also has enough dramatic pull to never feel light.  I liked the movie when I saw it at TIFF, and I look forward to seeing it again.

Though Jane Austen likely continues to spin in her grave, Burr Steers’ adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies keeps managing to shamble its way forward.  In addition to landing domestic distribution through Screen Gems, the 19th century zombie apocalypse film also boasts the addition of Game of Thrones alumni Charles Dance and Lena Headey.  There are no indications as to which roles the attached cast members will be embodying, but the recent casting news comes as a good sign for fans who have been waiting to the novel realized on the big screen.  It’s currently scheduled for a 2015 release.

First DRACULA UNTOLD Clip: Luke Evans Insists the World Needs a Monster

With Dracula Untold just a little less than a month away from its big debut, Universal has unleashed the very first clip from the film.  I’m not sure I’m buying the whole “men do not fear swords, they fear monsters” argument, but apparently Caligula (Charles Dance) does because ultimately he does turn Vlad (Luke Evans) into a vampire so that he can keep the peace in Transylvania and stop Mehmet (Dominic Cooper) from taking 1,000 boys for his army, including Vlad’s own son.

DRACULA UNTOLD International Trailer: Luke Evans Just Wants to Keep the Peace

It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything new from Dracula Untold, but with the film’s October 17th release date coming up fast, Universal has got to start ramping up the promotional campaign soon, perhaps beginning with this brand new international trailer.  A good deal of the footage here comes from the domestic promo we got back in June, but it does highlight a few different elements of the narrative, namely the peace in Transylvania and how Mehmet (Dominic Cooper) threatens to destroy it.

It also looks as though Universal is running with the title Dracula Zero in some regions overseas.  I don’t care much for Zero or Untold, but back when we were on set for the film, it was called Dracula Year Zero, so that one did grow on me.  Regardless, we’re getting Dracula Untold on October 17th.  The film also stars Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon, Charles Dance and Art Parkinson.  Hit the jump to check out that new Dracula Untold trailer.

Watch THE IMITATION GAME Trailer Starring Benedict Cumberbatch; Drama Will Open the 58th London Film Festival

The Weinstein Company has released the first The Imitation Game trailer.  The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, a brilliant cryptanalyst whose expertise cracked Germany’s “Enigma code” and helped turn the tide of World War II for the Allies, but his homosexuality made him a target of persecution.  Judging by this trailer, I’m sure there will be superficial Sherlock comparisons since Turing is brilliant but off-putting to those around him, but I think this looks like a solid World War II drama with some good performances.

Hit the jump to check out The Imitation Game trailer.  The film opens November 21st, and also stars Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Charles Dance, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Allen Leech, and Matthew Beard.  Additionally, The Imitation Game will open the 58th BFI London Film Festival on October 8th. [Update: We've added the U.K. trailer after the jump.]

The fourth season premiere of HBO’s massively popular drama series Game of Thrones is just a few short days away, and in anticipation of the event, the network has unveiled a new gallery of images teasing the new season.  These 10 episodes will cover roughly the second half of the third book in George R.R. Martin’s series, A Storm of Swords, and as we can see in these images, many characters will find themselves in precarious situations.  Most notably, this new image gallery gives us a close look at Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) dragons, which have grown considerably since we last saw them.

HBO has released yet another trailer for the fourth season of Game of Thrones.  Watching this trailer, it’s important to remember that there are still only ten episodes, and we’ve got quite a lot of storylines on our hands.  At some point, we may want to be grateful for some character deaths if only to unburden the plot.  Of course, I say that now and then all the characters I like will probably be slaughtered.  So much for the bright side.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The show stars Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Charles Dance, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maisie Williams, Aiden Turner, Iain Glen, Rose Leslie, Carice Van Houten, Alfie Allen, Diana Rigg, Natalie Dormer, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, and Isaac Hempstead Wright.  New cast this season include Pedro Pascal, Michiel Huisman, and Indira VarmaGame of Thrones returns on April 6th at 9pm on HBO.

There’s about to be a True Detective-sized hole in my Sunday night viewing, but thankfully there won’t be too long of a wait for more quality television.  Game of Thrones returns in April, and so HBO is seriously ramping up the marketing.  Today, they’ve released teasers focusing on the Starks, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), and Tyrion (Peter Dinklage).  There are also character posters for the Lannisters, presumably because they always pay their debts.

Deleted Scene from GAME OF THRONES: Season 3

HBO has released a deleted scene from the upcoming Game of Thrones: Season 3 Blu-ray/DVD.  In the scene, Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) is in the middle of fishing when he’s confronted by Grand Maester Pycelle (Julian Glover) begging to get his seat back on the high council.  We were shown this scene at Comic-Con, and I loved it.  I can kind of understand why it was cut since every episode packs in so much material, and this scene doesn’t drive the plot forward.  However, it completely changes our perception of Pycelle through a surprising and dramatic reveal.  That’s not to mention the terrific performances from Dance and Glover.  While it may not have been deemed essential by the showrunners, I’m glad that fans will still get a chance to see it.

Hit the jump to watch the deleted scene.  Game of Thrones: Season 3 will hit Blu-ray and DVD on February 18, 2014.

GAME OF THRONES Renewed for Season 4?

You don’t argue with Charles Dance.  If he says HBO’s Game of Thrones is going to be renewed for a fourth season, then you damn well better believe it and then thank him for not feeding you to the pigs.  While HBO was quick to point out that Dance’s comment on prepping for the upcoming fourth season isn’t exactly officially binding since the cast and crew do a lot of pre-production work before going into filming, I’d be one surprised Westerosi if Game of Thrones didn’t get renewed for season four.  Since the upcoming third season only tackles half of George R.R. Martin’s third novel in the series, they would at the very least need to wrap things up.  It’s looking more likely that HBO will catch up to Martin’s plots before the author finishes them himself!

Game of Thrones returns to HBO for its third season starting Sunday, March 31st at 9pm. Hit the jump to see what Dance had to say.

It’s still nearly two months away from the debut of season three of HBO’s Game of Thrones, but these new character images should help pass the time.  Featuring new looks at old characters and first looks at new cast additions, these images showcase the outstanding costume design that’s been a hallmark of the series.  Fan-favorite Peter Dinklage returns with a whole new look while we get our first introductions to such new players as Clive Russell (Sherlock Holmes) as Catelyn Stark’s dutiful uncle, Bryndon Tully (“The Blackfish”) and Paul Kaye (Match Point) as Thoros of Myr, a red priest of the same order as Stannis’ go-to sorceress Melisandre, plus a lot more.  Hit the jump to check them out.  Game of Thrones returns to HBO starting March 31st.

UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 2 years, 96 days ago

underworld-awakening-blu-ray-slice

The Underworld series has always been more style than substance. Or, more accurately, all style and no substance. That’s not necessarily a fault; plenty of films have succeeded primarily on flair. Alex Proyas’ The Crow, for example. The original Underworld, helmed by Len Wiseman and starring wife Kate Beckinsale, never approached (or aimed for) the haunting visual poetry of that film. But in the beginning, it got by on an inherently cool premise (werewolves and vampires at war) and competently staged action. Four films in, the novelty’s worn off.

Underworld: Awakening sees Beckinsale slipping back into her famed leather catsuit after sitting out the last prequel entry; and while she fits the role of undead “Death Dealer” Selene well as ever, the franchise to which she returns is a bloated corpse.
