LAVA Clip: Pixar’s Latest Grabs the Ukulele and Sings

by     Posted 4 days ago

lava-clip-pixar

There’s not a whole lot to say about a 38-second clip for a 10-minute short, but Pixar’s Lava certainly looks charming enough.  The studio doesn’t have a feature film slated for release this year, at least not since they pushed The Good Dinosaur to 2015, so this clip could be all we get from them for a while.  The short is a “musical love story” that revolves around two anthropomorphic volcanoes, and now you can hear one of those volcanoes (named Uku) sing.

Directed by James Ford Murphy, the short will play in front of Inside Out in theaters starting June 19, 2015.  So, yeah, almost a year away.  Hit the jump to check out the Lava clip!

Exclusive RECLAIM Clip Features John Cusack Getting a Little Too Close to Rachelle Lefevre

Reclaim is gearing up for release next month and we have an exclusive clip from the film to share with you today.  The clip features John Cusack and Rachelle Lefevre engaging in some beach-side conversation that gets a bit too personal (and a bit too creepy) a bit too quick.  My advice for her would be to run away and take her adopted daughter with her.  Ryan Phillippe also stars in the film along with Luis Guzman and Jacki Weaver.

Reclaim was directed by Alan White from a script by Luke Davies and Carmine Gaeta and if definitely seems like it explores the shady underbelly of the international adoption process.  Hit the jump to check out the Reclaim clip!  The film opens in limited theaters and On-Demand this September 19th.

Trust Me, director Clark Gregg’s first effort behind the camera since Choke, hits DVD today.  Gregg also wrote and stars in the pic as a down-on-his-luck agent for child actors who discovers a 13-year-old acting prodigy (Saxon Sharbino) and must subsequently deal with her overprotective father (Paul Sparks), an untrustworthy producer (Felicity Huffman), and his nemesis (Sam Rockwell) in order to get himself back on top.  It’s the aforementioned nemesis that this clip focusses on, going behind the scenes for a look at Rockwell and having some fun with his sleazy character.

Watch the Final Battle from GODZILLA and Add Some Monster Mayhem to Your Day

Godzilla lived up to big expectations assuming you expected it to be a true Godzilla movie.  There wasn’t much in the way of interesting human characters or deep personal drama.  It was about giant monsters fighting, and director Gareth Edwards handled it wonderfully.  It will be four years until we get the sequel, but with the promise of Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah, I’m hoping it will be worth the wait.  In the meantime, we can enjoy the excellent final battle from this year’s movie.  I won’t lie: It’s not quite as powerful when viewed on a computer monitor, but it’s still entertaining.  Atomic breath is always entertaining.

CBS Films has released six What If clips along with a behind-the-scenes featurette.  The film stars Daniel Radcliffe as a medical school dropout who strikes up a friendly relationship with a young animator (Zoe Kazan), but they start to wonder if the chemistry between them outweighs her relationship with her longtime boyfriend (Rafe Spall).  I really enjoyed the film when I saw it at TIFF last year (back when it had the better title “The F Word“), and I look forward to seeing it again when it opens later this month.

Hit the jump to check out the What If clips and featurette.  The film also stars Adam Driver, Mackenzie Davis, Megan Park, and Oona Chaplin.  What If opens in limited release on August 8th and expands nationwide on August 22nd.

Watch Darren Aronofsky Talk About About the Power of Myth

by     Posted 27 days ago

I quite liked Darren Aronofsky’s Noah.  It’s not the type of film I’ll likely return to again and again like some of his other work, but I was surprised the strength of vision his Bible pic possessed.  It was also interesting to note the reaction of a few über religious people with whom I was sharing the theater, getting upset because “that’s not the way it really happened.”  I don’t think Aronofsky was attempting to rattle their feathers, I actually think he was trying to retrofit a popular story with elements that are significant to our current civilization as we teeter upon the edge of environmental disaster.

Myths and the narrative framework in which we view our lives are often necessary constructs to impart meaning and significance upon events.  Darren Aronofsky gets that, so it’s a pleasure seeing him speak at some length regarding it.  Hit the jump for a clip of him talking about the value if myth in storytelling.

New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Clip Has a Finger on the Pulse of the Film’s Humor

We’re walking a fine line with Marvel’s marketing for Guardians of the Galaxy, with one side being in danger of giving away too much and the other offering teases to fans and newcomers alike.  In the last four days alone, we’ve seen not one, but two clips from the film.  Now, since audience reactions to an early screening were overwhelmingly positive, perhaps they want to encourage that great word of mouth with yet another clip.  This one does a solid job of not only showing off the film’s sense of humor, but further exploring the relationships between the characters early on in their tenuous arrangement.  Good stuff, but I’ve already seen more than enough to convince me to check this one out in theaters.

Starring Chris PrattZoe SaldanaDave BautistaLee PaceKaren GillanGlenn CloseBenicio Del ToroMichael RookerJohn C. Reilly, and Peter Serafinowicz, and featuring the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin DieselGuardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st.  Hit the jump to check out the latest clip.

First GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Clip Has Peter Quill Facing off Against Korath

guardians-of-the-galaxy-movie-poster

Marvel has released the first Guardians of the Galaxy clip online, and it showcases a scene that should be familiar to anyone who has seen the trailers.  The scene focuses on Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) trying to take an orb only to be interrupted by Korath (Djimon Hounsou).  What’s interesting about the clip is how it plays in the larger context of a scene rather than cherry-picking the snappiest parts and leaving out the plot points as opposed to how we’ve seen the scene in the trailers.

Hit the jump to check out the Guardians of the Galaxy clip.  The film also stars Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Karen GillanGlenn CloseBenicio Del ToroMichael RookerJohn C. LUCY Red-Band Clip Featuring Scarlett Johansson Using Less Than 100% of Her Brain

by     Posted 54 days ago

scarlett-johansson-lucy-red-band-clip

Let’s get something out of the way right now: the idea that humans only use 10% of their brain and could be superhuman if only we tapped into that other 90% is utter nonsense.  Aside from being categorically incorrect, it’s tired and lazy even as movie tropes go, and I want to believe that the majority of audiences know better and respond with an eye-roll upon hearing it.  That being said, writer-director Luc Besson’s Lucy could be a fun female-led action flick with literally almost any other explanation (nano-tech, genetic recombination, anything else…).  Case in point, now available for your viewing pleasure is the first red-band clip from the film featuring star Scarlett Johansson showing off her new-found abilities that are but a fraction of her eventual potential.  It’s such a shame that the man behind The Fifth Element and one of few women holding their own in superhero movies are restricted by something as idiotic as the 10% myth.  Hit the jump to watch the clip.  Lucy opens July 25th.

New BOYHOOD Clip Lets Us Know that Conversations Should Unfold Naturally

IFC Films has released a new Boyhood clip online.  The film stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as a divorced couple raising their son Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and daughter Samantha (Lorelei Linklater), and it was shot over a period of 12 years.  Director Richard Linklater filmed scenes for the pic every year for over a decade with the same actors, and the result is a movie that tracks the adolescence of young Mason through the formative experiences that shape and mold him into the man he will become.  Like some of Linklater’s other movies, the majority of the picture is just people talking, but every conversation has weight because it lives in the little moments rather than grand speeches.  As Ethan Hawke’s character says in this clip while trying to talk to the young Mason and Samantha, “We should just let it happen more natural.”  Boyhood is currently my favorite film of the year, and I can’t wait for audiences to finally see it.

AMC has released a 30-second The Walking Dead teaser clip from the upcoming fifth season.  I don’t keep up with the show, but from what I know about it, this clip seems spot on: humans are afraid of zombies, and the zombie makeup effects are awesome.  Beyond that, I leave it to the fans to sound off on this brief teaser.

Hit the jump to check out The Walking Dead clip.  The series stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Emily Kinney, Danai Gurira, Chad Coleman, and Sonequa Martin-GreenThe Walking Dead returns this October.

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION Clip Pits Mark Wahlberg against Jack Reynor in a Battle of Wits

Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction stomps into theaters this Friday, but if you need a little additional content to help you decide to see it, well then you’ve come to the right place, my friend!  A new clip was released today that centers on the relationship between a father (Mark Wahlberg) and the boy (Jack Reynor) who’s attempting to date his daughter (Nicola Peltz).  We’ve seen cars that turn into giant robots (and vice versa) and rampaging destruction that wipes out entire cities, so it’s nice to get this humorous moment between two human characters.

Also starring Kelsey GrammerStanley TucciSophia MylesLi BingbingT.J. MillerHan Geng, and Titus WelliverTransformers: Age of Extinction opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on June 27th.  Hit the jump to watch the new clip.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Clip: Disturbing Ape Behavior Hints at a Much Darker Film

by     Posted 73 days ago

dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-koba

It was always clear that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes would be darker than Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  Post-apocalyptic movies tend to be a bit of a downer.  However, a new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes clip shows something that’s not just dark, but also flat-out disturbing.  The clip features the ape Koba (Toby Kebbell), who you may recall wasn’t quite as forgiving as Caesar when it came to humans in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (the character was first played by Chris Gordon, but Kebbell came on board for the sequel since Koba has a larger role).  As this clip shows, Koba’s attitude hasn’t changed, but he’s become far more devious.  I almost wish Fox had kept this clip under wraps, but since they already showed some of it in the recent trailer, I suppose there’s no reason to keep it in the bag.

Hit the jump to check out the new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes clip.  The film opens in 3D on July 11th, and also stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Keri RussellGary Oldman, Kodi Smit-McPheeKirk AcevedoEnrique Murciano, and Judy Greer.

DELIVER US FROM EVIL: First Clip from Scott Derrickson’s Horror Film Features an Evil Jack-in-the-Box and a Heroic Olivia Munn

The first clip from Scott Derrickson’s upcoming psychological horror film Deliver Us from Evil really stresses the fact that a potential homeowner should request a paranormal investigation as part of the real estate appraisal process.  What might seem like faulty electrical wiring, uneven door frames, and slanting floorboards could actually be the caused by a more common problem: poltergeists.  If this has happened to you, do yourself a favor and order an exorcism as soon as possible; it really helps to increase your home’s resale value.  Oh, and keep those Jack-in-the-Boxes properly tuned.

Deliver Us from Evil stars Eric BanaEdgar RamirezJoel McHale, and Olivia Munn, and opens July 2nd.  Hit the jump to watch the first Deliver Us from Evil clip.
