New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Clip Has a Finger on the Pulse of the Film’s Humor

We’re walking a fine line with Marvel’s marketing for Guardians of the Galaxy, with one side being in danger of giving away too much and the other offering teases to fans and newcomers alike.  In the last four days alone, we’ve seen not one, but two clips from the film.  Now, since audience reactions to an early screening were overwhelmingly positive, perhaps they want to encourage that great word of mouth with yet another clip.  This one does a solid job of not only showing off the film’s sense of humor, but further exploring the relationships between the characters early on in their tenuous arrangement.  Good stuff, but I’ve already seen more than enough to convince me to check this one out in theaters.

First GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Clip Has Peter Quill Facing off Against Korath

Marvel has released the first Guardians of the Galaxy clip online, and it showcases a scene that should be familiar to anyone who has seen the trailers.  The scene focuses on Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) trying to take an orb only to be interrupted by Korath (Djimon Hounsou).  What’s interesting about the clip is how it plays in the larger context of a scene rather than cherry-picking the snappiest parts and leaving out the plot points as opposed to how we’ve seen the scene in the trailers.

LUCY Red-Band Clip Featuring Scarlett Johansson Using Less Than 100% of Her Brain

scarlett-johansson-lucy-red-band-clip

Let’s get something out of the way right now: the idea that humans only use 10% of their brain and could be superhuman if only we tapped into that other 90% is utter nonsense.  Aside from being categorically incorrect, it’s tired and lazy even as movie tropes go, and I want to believe that the majority of audiences know better and respond with an eye-roll upon hearing it.  That being said, writer-director Luc Besson’s Lucy could be a fun female-led action flick with literally almost any other explanation (nano-tech, genetic recombination, anything else…).  Case in point, now available for your viewing pleasure is the first red-band clip from the film featuring star Scarlett Johansson showing off her new-found abilities that are but a fraction of her eventual potential.  It’s such a shame that the man behind The Fifth Element and one of few women holding their own in superhero movies are restricted by something as idiotic as the 10% myth.  Hit the jump to watch the clip.  Lucy opens July 25th.

New BOYHOOD Clip Lets Us Know that Conversations Should Unfold Naturally

IFC Films has released a new Boyhood clip online.  The film stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as a divorced couple raising their son Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and daughter Samantha (Lorelei Linklater), and it was shot over a period of 12 years.  Director Richard Linklater filmed scenes for the pic every year for over a decade with the same actors, and the result is a movie that tracks the adolescence of young Mason through the formative experiences that shape and mold him into the man he will become.  Like some of Linklater’s other movies, the majority of the picture is just people talking, but every conversation has weight because it lives in the little moments rather than grand speeches.  As Ethan Hawke’s character says in this clip while trying to talk to the young Mason and Samantha, “We should just let it happen more natural.”  Boyhood is currently my favorite film of the year, and I can’t wait for audiences to finally see it.

AMC has released a 30-second The Walking Dead teaser clip from the upcoming fifth season.  I don’t keep up with the show, but from what I know about it, this clip seems spot on: humans are afraid of zombies, and the zombie makeup effects are awesome.  Beyond that, I leave it to the fans to sound off on this brief teaser.

Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction stomps into theaters this Friday, but if you need a little additional content to help you decide to see it, well then you’ve come to the right place, my friend!  A new clip was released today that centers on the relationship between a father (Mark Wahlberg) and the boy (Jack Reynor) who’s attempting to date his daughter (Nicola Peltz).  We’ve seen cars that turn into giant robots (and vice versa) and rampaging destruction that wipes out entire cities, so it’s nice to get this humorous moment between two human characters.

Also starring Kelsey GrammerStanley TucciSophia MylesLi BingbingT.J. MillerHan Geng, and Titus WelliverTransformers: Age of Extinction opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on June 27th.  Hit the jump to watch the new clip.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Clip: Disturbing Ape Behavior Hints at a Much Darker Film

by     Posted 42 days ago

It was always clear that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes would be darker than Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  Post-apocalyptic movies tend to be a bit of a downer.  However, a new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes clip shows something that’s not just dark, but also flat-out disturbing.  The clip features the ape Koba (Toby Kebbell), who you may recall wasn’t quite as forgiving as Caesar when it came to humans in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (the character was first played by Chris Gordon, but Kebbell came on board for the sequel since Koba has a larger role).  As this clip shows, Koba’s attitude hasn’t changed, but he’s become far more devious.  I almost wish Fox had kept this clip under wraps, but since they already showed some of it in the recent trailer, I suppose there’s no reason to keep it in the bag.

Hit the jump to check out the new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes clip.  The film opens in 3D on July 11th, and also stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Keri RussellGary Oldman, Kodi Smit-McPheeKirk AcevedoEnrique Murciano, and Judy Greer.

DELIVER US FROM EVIL: First Clip from Scott Derrickson’s Horror Film Features an Evil Jack-in-the-Box and a Heroic Olivia Munn

The first clip from Scott Derrickson’s upcoming psychological horror film Deliver Us from Evil really stresses the fact that a potential homeowner should request a paranormal investigation as part of the real estate appraisal process.  What might seem like faulty electrical wiring, uneven door frames, and slanting floorboards could actually be the caused by a more common problem: poltergeists.  If this has happened to you, do yourself a favor and order an exorcism as soon as possible; it really helps to increase your home’s resale value.  Oh, and keep those Jack-in-the-Boxes properly tuned.

Deliver Us from Evil stars Eric BanaEdgar RamirezJoel McHale, and Olivia Munn, and opens July 2nd.  Hit the jump to watch the first Deliver Us from Evil clip.

First DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Clip Starring Jason Clarke and Andy Serkis

20th Century Fox has released the first Dawn of the Planet of the Apes clip.  The follow-up takes place 10 years after the events of the first film and finds Caesar (Andy Serkis) attempting to assert his dominance over the apes while a small human colony struggles to survive in San Francisco.  As this clip astutely points out, most of humanity probably doesn’t know how advanced apes are other than the rampage across the Golden Gate Bridge, an event that has probably now faded from memory following the collapse of human civilization.  The clip also does a good job of quickly setting up the introduction between Caesar and Malcolm (Jason Clarke).  I can’t wait for this movie.

New TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION Clip and TV Spot Feature Threats and Explosions

Paramount has released a new Transformers: Age of Extinction clip and TV spot.  In the movie, Mark Wahlberg plays a burgeoning inventor/family man who runs into trouble when he accidentally discovers a beat-up Transformer.  In the clip, Kelsey Grammer‘s character levels a grave threat at Wahlberg saying that he has to either play ball or else his teenage daughter will be killed.  The TV spot shows Transformers beating up other Transformers and riding around on Dinobots, so you can see that the tone is perfectly balanced.  I don’t know how you make this franchise look phoned in, but I can’t believe a film with this many explosions can look so ho-hum.

Hit the jump to check out the Transformers: Age of Extinction clip and TV spot.  The film opens in 3D on June 27th, and also stars Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Stanley Tucci, Sophia Myles, Li Bingbing, T.J. Miller, Han Geng, and Titus Welliver.

Watch “The Story of Creation” Clip from Darren Aronofsky’s NOAH

by     Posted 81 days ago

noah-movie-creation

Noah was a bit of a surprise hit (I thought it would tank because religious audiences would be upset because it was too liberal of an interpretation, and non-religious audiences would assume the movie was too original), and while I had mixed feelings on the movie, I’m glad people turned out to see it.  Darren Aronofsky made an interesting movie with big ideas, and while they didn’t always click together or were sometimes slightly spoon-fed or softened, they all existed within a memorable landscape.  One of the film’s most striking scenes is Noah (Russell Crowe) telling the story of creation, which allows Aronofsky to blend the biblical with the scientific to form a beautiful and vibrant composition.

First Clip and New Images from Atom Egoyan’s THE CAPTIVE Starring Ryan Reynolds and Mireille Enos

Ahead of its Cannes Film Festival premiere, the first clip from Atom Egoyan‘s The Captive has gone online along with new images.  The story follows how “a kidnapping destroys the relationships among those involved. As the film teases out the complex threads weaving together the victim, her family, the predators and the investigators, the mystery is revealed as to what happened to the child during the eight years she was missing.”  I hated Egoyan’s previous movie, Devil’s Knot, but he’s still an immensely talented filmmaker, and it sounds like he’s working from much stronger material rather than making a poor imitation of better movies.

Things Get Awkward in First Clip from MALEFICENT Starring Angelina Jolie and Sharlto Copley

Disney has released the first clip from Robert Stromberg‘s Maleficent.  The film tells the story of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the titular villain (Angelina Jolie), and how a betrayal sets off a drive for revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides.  Even though this is the first clip, we’ve already seen a good portion of it in the previous marketing materials, so it seems like Disney is still keeping the film closely under (horn) wraps.  But the one constant is how much fun Jolie is having with the role, and that comes through loud and clear in this scene.

A new clip and poster for The Rover has gone online.  The film stars Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson and takes place 10 years after the collapse of society, revolving around a man who sets out to reclaim his last possession from a gang.  In this clip, Eric (Pearce) explains to Rey (Pattinson) that he’s been abandoned by not only his brother, but also by God.  It seems like this will be an uplifting little picture.

10-Minute Featurette and New Clip from FRANK Starring Michael Fassbender and Domhnall Gleeson

A new Frank featurette has gone online along with a new clip.  The film stars Domhnall Gleeson as an aspiring musician who joins an eccentric band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank, played by Michael Fassbender.  The story is loosely based on Frank Sidebottom with Fassbender sporting an odd, large mask.  The featurette is really fascinating as Gleeson, Fassbender, writer Jon Ronson, (whose time with Sidebottom was the inspiration for the story), and director Lenny Abrahamson talk about the various aspects of the film without giving away any of the plot.  I really liked the movie when I saw it at Sundance, and even though it’s strange, it’s also funny and moving, and I hope it finds an audience.

Hit the jump to check out the featurette and the clip.  The film also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and Scoot McNairyFrank opens in the U.K. on May 9th and in the U.S. on August 22nd.
