Check out Two Clips from Yann Demange’s Exhilarating ’71 Starring Jack O’Connell

by     Posted 35 minutes ago

71-jack-oconnell

Two ’71 clips have gone online, and they both do a great job at highlighting director Yann Demange‘s ability to build tension and create thrilling action.  The film is set in Belfast in 1971 and centers on a young British soldier (Jack O’Connell) that’s been abandoned by his unit following a riot.  Trapped behind enemy lines, he’s unable to tell friend from foe, and we follow as he tries to find his way home while the locals battle for supremacy.  These clips showcase the lead-up to the riot and O’Connell’s character, Private Gary Hook, on the run from Irish nationalists.  From these two brief clips, you can tell that Demange is a serious talent, and big things could be ahead for him if this movie is even a modest hit.

Hit the jump for the ’71 clips, click here for my review from TIFF, and click here for Steve’s interview with O’Connell from the Berlin Film Festival.  ’71 opens in the U.K. on October 10th; no U.S. release date has been announced.

Exclusive Clip from THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE 40th Anniversary Blu-ray Goes Behind the Famous Hook Scene

by     Posted 2 days ago

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of the most formative films from my childhood.  I of course didn’t get to see it until I was in my early teens, but the box was always taunting me from the shelf of my local Blockbuster, “I dare you to watch this.”  Once I watched, I wasn’t disappointed.  And the film still holds up wonderfully today.  When you break it down it’s actually far less gory than its title implies, but it’s shot in such a visceral manner that you think you’re seeing things you actually aren’t. Even if director Tobe Hooper never made another film (and he’s made several great ones since), his mark on cinema history would have been complete.

Dark Sky Films has done a truly stunning job on the 4K restoration of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for its 40th Anniversary Release.  Their Blu-ray also has a bevy of bonus features, including a through making-of documentary.  The clip we’re sharing with you today comes from that doc and explores the famous meat-hook scene.  Hit the jump to check it out.

Exclusive THE GUEST Clip: Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett Discuss Making the Film with Nicolas Winding Refn

If you’ve seen Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett’s work in films like A Horrible Way to Die, You’re Next and V/H/S, their latest, The Guest, will come as quite the surprise because it’s strikingly different in so many respects.  It stars Dan Stevens as David, a guy who shows up at the Peterson family’s door, claiming to be a good friend of their son who died in action.  However, soon after welcoming him into their home, there are some mysterious deaths in town and Anna Peterson (Maika Monroe) suspects they might be connected to David.

The Guest does have a fair amount of bloodshed and loads of suspense, but this one’s much more of an action thriller than a horror movie and that was the focus of some of the conversation at The Guest’s Q&A at Sundance NEXT FEST.  Wingard and Barrett sat down to field some questions from moderator Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) and the audience, and we’ve got an exclusive look at highlights from the discussion.  Hit the jump to watch The Guest clip and hear what Wingard and Barrett had to say about making the switch to more action-heavy material, choosing music for the film and why they had to redo their big car crash. The Guest invades theaters this Wednesday.

With Dracula Untold just a little less than a month away from its big debut, Universal has unleashed the very first clip from the film.  I’m not sure I’m buying the whole “men do not fear swords, they fear monsters” argument, but apparently Caligula (Charles Dance) does because ultimately he does turn Vlad (Luke Evans) into a vampire so that he can keep the peace in Transylvania and stop Mehmet (Dominic Cooper) from taking 1,000 boys for his army, including Vlad’s own son.

Hit the jump to check out the very first Dracula Untold clip.  The movie also stars Sarah Gadon, Art Parkinson and Noah Huntley, and is due to hit theaters on October 10th.

First Clips from Joe Carnahan’s STRETCH Feature Patrick Wilson, Chris Pine, Scotch, Norman Reedus, Blood, a String of Pearls, and Ed Helms

We got our first glimpse at images from Joe Carnahan’s newest film Stretch just about a week ago, but the movie’s social media campaign has been going bonkers since then.  There have been plenty of alt-posters, behind-the-scenes images revealing cameos and guest stars, and lots of general blanket insanity.  Now, the first clips from the film are making their way online, and boy are they delightfully strange.  They’re short, but efficient in their weirdness and humor, plus you get your first look at star Patrick Wilson and co-stars Chris Pine, Norman Reedus, and Ed Helms.  It’s a great introduction to what’s sure to be a balls-to-the-wall crazy film.

ST. VINCENT Clip Features Bill Murray Boozing it Up While Exploiting Child Labor

The Toronto International Film Festival is in full swing now and that’s where Theodore Melfi’s feature directorial debut, St. Vincent, will be having its world premiere this evening.  You’ve seen a trailer for the film along with some images, but now we have our first clip from the movie.  I like it.  Bill Murray seems like he’s in nice, subdued form and it’s a relief to see Melissa McCarthy playing a real person after a string of successful caricatures.

St. Vincent features Bill Murray as Vincent, Maggie (Melissa McCarthy) and Oliver’s (Jaeden Lieberher) retired neighbor with a drinking problem, bad attitude and no money in his bank account.  When Maggie gets stuck working long hours, she lets Vincent watch Oliver while she’s gone, giving him a chance to make a quick buck.  Hit the jump to check out the clip.  The film also stars Chris O’Dowd and Naomi Watts.  It’s set to screen at TIFF tonight and will begin its theatrical run on October 14th.

Hold onto your butts; Samuel L. Jackson is back and he’s rolling down a hill in a freezer.  Really.  Jackson leads the Toronto International Film Festival Midnight Madness selection, Big Game, as the President of the United States.  When a 13-year-old boy named Oskari (Onni Tommila) accepts the traditional challenge to head out into the wilderness for one day and one night to prove that he’s a man, he winds up stumbling across an escape pod – the Air Force One escape pod.  Now it’s up to Oskari to protect the President from the terrorists trying to kidnap him.

Check out what happens when Oskari insists, “Instead of looking tough, we have to be tough,” in the very first Big Game clip after the jump.  The film also stars Ray Stevenson, Jim Broadbent and Felicity Huffman.

THE MAZE RUNNER Clip and Character Posters; Plus Additional Promos Featuring The Grievers

If you’re going to survive The Maze Runner, you’ve got to follow the rules.  You’ve got to check out the map room, get your section assignment, gear up and only then can you run into the maze to try to find a way out.  And if that’s not hard enough, you’ve also got to make sure you make it back into The Glade before those doors close, otherwise, the Grievers will get you.

It’s always been clear that the James Dashner book has some serious big screen potential, but now that The Maze Runner promo material is pouring in ahead of the film’s September 19th release, it’s more evident than ever.  Hit the jump to catch a brand new The Maze Runner clip as well as some new promo videos and character posters, too.

BIG HERO 6 Clip Introduces Unlikely Friends Hiro and Baymax

big-hero-6-clip

Disney has released a new Big Hero 6 clip online.  Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt) directed the adaptation of the Marvel comic, which takes place in the high-tech city of San Fransokyo, and tells the story of a robotics prodigy named Hiro Hamada (voiced by Ryan Potter) who, with his robot companion Baymax (Scott Adsit) in tow, teams up with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters to save the metropolis from destruction.

I’m not familiar with the source material, but I really dug the trailer and am looking forward to seeing this movie next month.  I think it’s interesting that a lot of the more clever writing on the studio end of things these days is for animated projects.  This clip is most certainly from earlier in the film considering it seems to be the scene where Hiro and Baymax first meet.  Hit the jump to check out the new Big Hero 6 clip.  The film also features the voices of Maya Rudolph, James Cromwell, T.J. Miller, Jamie Chung, Genesis Rodriguez, Damon Wayans Jr., and Alan TudykBig Hero 6 opens in 3D on November 7th.  And be sure to check back in with us tomorrow, since we have a lot more coverage on this film hitting then.

LAVA Clip: Pixar’s Latest Grabs the Ukulele and Sings

by     Posted 22 days ago

lava-clip-pixar

There’s not a whole lot to say about a 38-second clip for a 10-minute short, but Pixar’s Lava certainly looks charming enough.  The studio doesn’t have a feature film slated for release this year, at least not since they pushed The Good Dinosaur to 2015, so this clip could be all we get from them for a while.  The short is a “musical love story” that revolves around two anthropomorphic volcanoes, and now you can hear one of those volcanoes (named Uku) sing.

Directed by James Ford Murphy, the short will play in front of Inside Out in theaters starting June 19, 2015.  So, yeah, almost a year away.  Hit the jump to check out the Lava clip!

Exclusive RECLAIM Clip Features John Cusack Getting a Little Too Close to Rachelle Lefevre

Reclaim is gearing up for release next month and we have an exclusive clip from the film to share with you today.  The clip features John Cusack and Rachelle Lefevre engaging in some beach-side conversation that gets a bit too personal (and a bit too creepy) a bit too quick.  My advice for her would be to run away and take her adopted daughter with her.  Ryan Phillippe also stars in the film along with Luis Guzman and Jacki Weaver.

Reclaim was directed by Alan White from a script by Luke Davies and Carmine Gaeta and if definitely seems like it explores the shady underbelly of the international adoption process.  Hit the jump to check out the Reclaim clip!  The film opens in limited theaters and On-Demand this September 19th.

Watch the Final Battle from GODZILLA and Add Some Monster Mayhem to Your Day

by     Posted 29 days ago

godzilla-poster

Godzilla lived up to big expectations assuming you expected it to be a true Godzilla movie.  There wasn’t much in the way of interesting human characters or deep personal drama.  It was about giant monsters fighting, and director Gareth Edwards handled it wonderfully.  It will be four years until we get the sequel, but with the promise of Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah, I’m hoping it will be worth the wait.  In the meantime, we can enjoy the excellent final battle from this year’s movie.  I won’t lie: It’s not quite as powerful when viewed on a computer monitor, but it’s still entertaining.  Atomic breath is always entertaining.

Hit the jump to check out the final battle from Godzilla, and click here to pre-order the film on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD.  The film will be released for home entertainment on September 16th.
