Crazy, Stupid, Love. was directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, best known for having written Bad Santa. They wrote and directed I Love You, Phillip Morris and it seemed of their sensibilities, but with this film they seem to be making a bid to work in the studio system by directing Dan Fogelman‘s script – who’s best known for kids films. The film stars Steve Carell as a man going through a divorce and gets dating advice from Ryan Gosling on how to close a deal. But Carell is still in love with his wife, Julianne Moore, and Gosling connects with Emma Stone, which throws a monkey wrench into their bar scene days. Our review of Crazy, Stupid, Love. on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

After two weeks on top, Rise of the Planet of the Apes swapped places with last week’s number two The Help on top of the weekend box office. That left places 3-5 for the major new releases, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, Conan the Barbarian, and Fright Night. Even One Day managed only a middling per-screen average in its smaller release. Details after the jump.

At the moment the estimates for the weekend’s two top films are dead even: a box office rarity. Both Cowboys and Aliens and The Smurfs are claiming estimates of $36.2 million – a figure that is slightly embarrassing for one film and a near miracle for the other.

This time last week, I was writing about how happy I was to be in San Diego, 2,000 miles away from the godless heat of the Midwest. Fast-forward to the present, and I’m happy to report that things back home have really cooled off with a heat index hovering right around a brisk 108 degrees Fahrenheit. At this rate, I should be able to check my mail without fear of sweating through my clothes any day now (baby steps, people, baby steps). Because I truly care about our readers, I’m hoping that wherever you’re reading this from is cool, comfortable, and free of any sort of sweating. Now, onto the important stuff…
In this week’s “Top 5″ installment we have an abundance of coverage for The Avengers, a video interview with the iconic Patrick Stewart, the first look at Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, the first trailer for director Peter Berg’s adaptation of Hasbro’s Battleship, and Matt’s cast interviews and review of Crazy, Stupid, Love.. Hit the jump for brief recaps and links to each.

This week the box office gave us Cowboys and Aliens: a huge action movie directed by Jon Favreau, written by Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman and produced by Steven Spielberg. It also gave us The Smurfs: a movie about tiny, animated blue creatures from the eighties which was supposed to play as family-friendly counter-programming to the would-be summer blockbuster. So what’s with that chart? Opening in 3,750 locations, Cowboys and Aliens was projected to take the weekend with $45-$50 million to The Smurfs $20 million from 3,395 dates. With Friday’s estimates, however, it now looks like Cowboys will be a first-place disappointment with $40 million while The Smurfs will overperform in second place with at least $30 million. Meanwhile, the third new release of the week, Crazy Stupid Love, opened in 3,020 locations, taking in an estimated $6.6 million for a weekend projection of $20 million. Full details and analysis tomorrow.

Julianne Moore is one of the best actresses working today. No matter what film she’s in, she almost always delivers a strong performance and finds an inspired and intelligent approach to her characters. In her newest film, Crazy, Stupid, Love., she plays Emily, a woman who is divorcing her husband Cal (Steve Carell) after she cheated on him with her co-worker (Kevin Bacon). Despite the character’s actions, Moore does a tremendous job of keeping our sympathies, which is an even more difficult task when you consider the affability of an actor like Carell.
During a roundtable interview at the Crazy, Stupid, Love. press junket, Moore talked about balancing the drama and humor of her character, playing middle-aged women (but if you’re wondering who she was laughing at about the poorly-phrased question concerning great roles for older actresses, it was me), her advice for Emma Stone, and more. As you may have noticed, we’ve been a bit flooded with content for the past week thanks in no small part to Comic-Con 2011. We’ve been posting our full-scale coverage from the convention (I’m still trying to catch up on sleep), which has included a large number of interviews. We know some of you might have missed a few of these interviews, so we’ve compiled a sort of “catch up” list of 10 that we thought you might enjoy.
Not all of the interviews are Comic-Con related, but we’ve got conversations with Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, Damon Lindelof, Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Marc Webb, Steve Carell, Patrick Stewart, Don Cheadle, Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays, Nicolas Winding Refn, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, Don Cheadle and Kate Beckinsale. Hit the jump for some quick recaps and links to the full interviews.

Crazy, Stupid, Love. has plenty of great performances. Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and Julianne Moore all do terrific work but the movie truly belongs to Steve Carell. As Cal Weaver, he’s finds the balance of sadness and silliness in the role where a middle-aged guy can recognize the despair of being divorced and cheated on but also the strangeness of having to reinvent himself in order to move on with his life. Additionally, Carell once again shows that he has comic delivery that’s second to none.
During a roundtable interview at the press junket for the film, we spoke to Carell about what he found appealing in the script, what the movie has to say about modern masculinity, getting slapped by Ryan Gosling [Corrected: I know I originally wrote Ryan Reynolds. My bad.], and much more. Hit the jump to check out the interview. Crazy, Stupid, Love. opens tomorrow.

Would you ever take the advice of your thirteen-year-old self? Would you look back to your days as a batch of hormones and angst and say, “I was so wise back then. What happened?” Crazy, Stupid, Love. takes an “out of the mouths of babes” approach to serious romantic relationships and as a result an honest but funny relationship dramedy gets a saccharine sheen that completely overwhelms the film in the final act. Ultimately, great performances and cute humor can’t withstand the stalkerish affections of an 8th grader.

Emma Stone is one of the best rising young actresses working today. She really hit a breakthrough role with last year’s Easy A and she shows no sign of slowing down. This summer she’s co-starring in Crazy, Stupid, Love., she has a cameo in Friends with Benefits, and then she’ll be starring in an adaptation The Help, which I think will be the sleeper hit of the summer based on how many people I see carrying around the book. And next summer she’s playing the female lead in The Amazing Spider-Man, so she’s not just on the rise but has arguably arrived.
No matter where you place her in her career, the 21-year-old actresses burst in the roundtable interview at the Crazy, Stupid, Love. press junket filled with humor and energy. After commenting on the scented candles in the room (our roundtable room was apparently the only one that had them), we talked about female-led comedies, her fear of being re-enacting Dirty Dancing with co-star Ryan Gosling, why she hates and loves her East A director Will Gluck, and much more. Hit the jump to check out the interview. Crazy, Stupid, Love. opens this Friday.

Earlier this month I got to head up to New York to do the press junket for the upcoming romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. The film follows three different romantic relationships and how they intersect with one another. One of the film’s funniest relationships is between despondent cuckold Cal (Steve Carell) and the benevolent pick-up artist Jacob (Ryan Gosling) who decides to give Cal a makeover and help him get his mojo back. The movie is a rare outright comic performance from Gosling and he has wonderful chemistry with Carell.
During the roundtable interview with Gosling, we asked him about making the shift to comedy, his upcoming projects Logan’s Run and The Place Beyond the Pines, his four-legged soulmate, and much more. Hit the jump to check out the interview. Crazy, Stupid, Love. opens this Friday.

Earlier today, I was in New York to do the press junket for Crazy, Stupid, Love. I’ll have the full roundtable interviews on the site closer to the film’s release date, but I wanted to provide some quick updates on future projects I learned from stars Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and producer Denise Di Novi. Hit the jump for an update from Carell on Civil Warriors, Ryan Gosling talking about Logan’s Run and Only God Forgives, Emma Stone commenting on the tone of The Amazing Spider-Man, and producer Denise Di Novi speaking about the current state of her adaptations for The Jetsons and The Illustrated Man as well as the Guillermo del Toro-produced adaptation of Beauty and the Beast.

We have a plethora of new posters to bring you tonight from Crazy, Stupid, Love., Fox’s Terra Nova, and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. Beginning with Crazy, I’m looking forward to this pic because of its stellar cast and I’m a fan of these new posters because it gives me a heads up on which of the said cast members embody “Crazy,” “Stupid,” and “Love.” Starring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, and Marisa Tomei, Crazy, Stupid, Love. hits theaters on July 29th.
Next up, we have some very cool sheets from Fox’s and producer Steven Spielberg’s new sci-fi drama Terra Nova. Up until now, I was a little concerned that the series’ promo campaign was trying to look kind of like Avatar without looking exactly like Avatar. However, the three “Warning” messages on display here are pretty creative and stylish to boot. Fox just announced that Terra Nova will premiere on Monday, September 26th. Finally, we also have some new looks at Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, one of which is a character poster for a dog. Enough said. The Robert Rodriguez written/directed pic stars Jessica Alba, Antonio Banderas, Jeremy Piven, Danny Trejo, Alexa Vega, and Joel McHale. It opens in 3D on August 19th. Hit the jump to check out the new posters.

New posters for Puss in Boots and Crazy, Stupid, Love have been released today. A spinoff of the Shrek franchise, Puss in Boots features the voices of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Zach Galifianakis. Guillermo del Toro serves as a consultant on the film, and when Steve saw some footage earlier this year he was very impressed. The poster for Puss in Boots features a cat walking away from an explosion, so it’s automatically better than any other poster ever. The film opens in 3D on November 4th.
A poster for the dramedy Crazy, Stupid, Love has also been released. Steve Carell stars as a man still reeling from his divorce when he begins taking advice from a ladies man played by Ryan Gosling. In addition to Carell and Gosling, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, Marisa Tomei, and Kevin Bacon also star. Crazy, Stupid, Love hits theaters July 29th. Hit the jump to check out the posters:
