It’s hard to overestimate the impact of Universal’s classic monster movies. They brought the themes and techniques of German Expressionism straight to Hometown U.S.A. and forever defined our notion of horror movies in the process. Every Halloween decoration ever made owes them some debt. Every onscreen boogeyman and misunderstood outcast can trace their roots back to them. They’ve become so ingrained in pop culture that we scarcely acknowledge their existence anymore… save during moments like this one, when they make the leap onto a new medium. As part of their 100th anniversary celebration, Universal has packaged eight of them into an “Essentials” Blu-ray collection, a handsome set that nonetheless stumbles into a number of expected pitfalls. Hit the jump for my full review.

For serious poster collectors and Universal Monsters fans, it will come as no surprise that Drew Struzan—the legendary artist who created some of the most well-known, iconic movie posters ever to come out of Hollywood—once created a poster for Universal’s Creature From The Black Lagoon: after all, the image has been bouncing around since 2001, and it’s easily discovered for anyone who does a little poking around on Struzan’s website; it’s not as though Struzan’s been keeping this thing a secret. And yet, I recently noticed—over the course of several email-based conversations with readers—that very few of you seemed to be aware of this print’s existence.
With Mondo’s Universal Monsters show just about a week away from opening, I figured it’d be a good time to take a look at the history of this piece: how it came about, who produced it, and—last but not least—where people may be able to get ahold of one if one were so inclined. For all of that (and more), meet me after the jump, folks.

We recently lamented the lack of classic contemporary monster figures in our horror-themed Collision podcast, and now, up pops news on the remake of Universal’s Creature from the Black Lagoon. The studio has tapped Dave Kajganich (The Invasion) to write up the project, a reimagining of the 1954 classic. Produced in part by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), whose father was a writer on the original film, Creature from the Black Lagoon centers on the titular antagonist, a prehistoric humanoid who rises from his watery abode to terrorize the terrestrials. Kajganich’s other projects include remakes of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, It and The Stand. Heat Vision further reports that Carl Rinsch (47 Ronin) is not attached to direct.

Anticipation’s running high for the 15-some-odd poster drops that Mondo’s promised during this year’s Comic-Con, and so far the reveals have been pretty damn stunning: we’ve learned that Mondo and HBO have teamed up for a Game of Thrones series, and—just a few days ago– the fine folks at Entertainment Weekly revealed three of the prints from that series to a frenzied response from fans. All’s been quiet on the poster-reveal front ever since, but today Limited Paper is proud to play host to the next big reveal from Mondo’s Comic-Con lineup: the long-awaited screenprint for Universal’s Creature From The Black Lagoon.

If you haven’t seen director Carl Erik Rinsch’s short sci-fi film The Gift, you need to stop reading and click this link. That’s because Rinsch’s 5 minute short that takes place in a futuristic Russia is an awesome little film that has already sparked a bidding war in Hollywood.
While everyone assumed the bidding war was over the rights to the short film and the world Rinsch created, Peter at Slashfilm found out Rinsch has already written and designed a feature called Small and The Gift is actually the prequel to that film! But it gets better. Peter landed some leaked concept art from Small and if you hit the jump you can check it out:
