Crispin Glover Screens Infamously Weird Films IT IS FINE, EVERYTHING IS FINE! & WHAT IS IT? at the ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE; Recap Here

Crispin Glover alamo drafthouse slice

When it was announced that Crispin Hellion Glover was headed to the Austin area, I took action immediately: tickets were secured, times were double-checked, parachute pants were ironed and starched into oblivion (long story).  While I didn’t know quite what to expect from Glover’s two-night run at the Alamo Drafthouse, I knew that the actor was screening two of his most infamously weird projects:  It Is Fine, Everything Is Fine! and What is It? I also knew he would be performing some sort of reading from the handful of “books” he’s “written”, but frankly, the promise of seeing those two bizarro films was more than enough to get me into the theater.  So, how weird was it?  Read on for our report from the Drafthouse frontlines, after the jump.

MR. NICE Trailer Starring Rhys Ifans, Chloe Sevigny, and David Thewlis

by     Posted: June 1st, 2010 at 12:50 pm

The UK trailer for the drug-dealer dramedy Mr. Nice has popped up online.  The film stars Rhys Ifans as real-life pusher, kingpin, and spy (among other professions) Howard Marks, who became one of Britain’s most wanted criminals.  The trailer doesn’t thrill me like I hoped it would.  It looks like British Blow, complete with standard 70s-era visuals and rise-fall narrative.  Only the spy stuff grabs my interest.  The synopsis is so over the place that it’s hard to pick up a better idea of the movie.  Still, Ifans is great and the cast also includes Chloe Sevigny, David Thewlis, and Crispin Glover.  Hopefully the performances combined with Marks’ incredible story will make for a solid film.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Mr. Nice is slated to hit theaters in the UK this fall, but it currently has no distributor for a US release.

Director Steve Pink Interview HOT TUB TIME MACHINE

Some writer-directors of comedy movies aren’t funny in interviews.  It’s surprising, but it happens.  However, Steve Pink is not one of those people.  He’s also very smart.  He wrote Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity and directed the underrated Accepted. His latest film, Hot Tub Time Machine, is damn funny and he had the skill to pull off a film that embraced the silliness of the 1980s but never insulted it.

I got to interview Pink at a press junket for the film a couple weeks ago.  Among other topics, we discussed the references in the film, how it approached the 80s versus the present, the mechanics of time travel and how to balance it with the comedy, and the film’s fantastic soundtrack.  There was also a long discussion about a moral question the film poses but since that involves the ending, I’ve stationed it off with spoiler alert tags.

Matt Jumps into the HOT TUB TIME MACHINE 80s Party

slice_hot_tub_time_machine_80s_party.jpg

Last weekend, I headed to Lake Tahoe to do the press junket for Hot Tub Time Machine.  Before I continue, let me say that film is damn funny and that’s good because I would have felt conflicted about having an awesome time at the 80s party MGM threw the following night if I hadn’t enjoyed the film.  The reason it was an 80s party is that the film centers on four guys (played by Rob Corddry, John Cusack, Clark Duke, and Craig Robinson) who travel back to 1986 and Corddry, Cusack, and Robinson’s characters get a redo when they discover that their rose-colored nostalgia glasses aren’t worth shit.

After the jump, you’ll find all the photos I took at the party as well as some of the beautiful scenery and the casino in the hotel where money goes away.  I’ve only noted myself and the stars in the photos, but if you attended the party and want to be credited (or if you want your photo taken down), let me know and I’ll update the caption (or take down the photo).

Hot Tub Time Machine hits theaters on March 26th.

Two Featurettes and Four Clips for HOT TUB TIME MACHINE

by     Posted: March 19th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Hot Tub Time Machine movie image slice.jpg

We just got sent two featurettes and four clips for the upcoming time-travel/80s-parody Hot Tub Time Machine.  One featurette focuses on Chevy Chase who plays an irritatingly (to the characters) cryptic hot tub repairman and the other focuses on Crispin Glover whose character is part of the one of the greatest running gags of all-time.

We also have four clips and they’re good but it looks like MGM is holding the painfully hilarious stuff for those that go to see the movie.  And it’s a movie folks should go see it.  I saw the flick last weekend and it’s damn funny, especially Rob Corddry who has finally found his breakout role.

Hit the jump to check out the featurettes, clips, and official synopsis.  Hot Tub Time Machine hits theaters on March 26th. [Update: We have temporarily removed the featurettes at the request of the studio]

ALICE IN WONDERLAND Review

Mia Wasikowska in Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland (1).jpg

With Alice in Wonderland, it becomes clear that Tim Burton has run out of imagination sauce.  He used it all up years ago and now he’s created a film that’s just a big, hollow CGI concoction his predictable scribblings of creatures and landscapes.  Rather than find harmony with Lewis Carroll’s classic work, Burton takes the names, characters, and lingo, and thinks he can apply them to a better narrative.  He is sorely mistaken and Alice in Wonderland is 108 minutes inside the director’s creative nadir.

Every Wednesday, Walt Disney releases a new Alice in Wonderland featurette and today is no different.  With the amount of video featurettes and trailers that have been released, I’m at the point where I just want to see movie.  But I understand why Disney is doing this, as they’ve spent a lot of money bringing Alice back to life and they want a huge opening weekend.  Based on the buzz I’m hearing, I don’t think they have to worry.

9 DVD Review

It’s rare that two films with the same name come out within months of each other.  After all, the MPAA Title Registration Database exists to protect against just such confusion; however, when both are adapted from pre-established source material, what can the MPAA do?  To be fair, so the two films in question, Nine and 9, are not quite identically titled.  The former is an adaptation of the stage musical of the same name that itself is taken from Fellini’s 8 ½.  This is not a review of that film.  The latter is an expansion of director Shane Ackers’s digitally animated short about a burlap doll that awakens in a post-apocalyptic world devoid of humans and must subsequently struggle to survive.  DVD review of that 9 after the jump.

UK Trailer for Tim Burton’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND

slice_alice_in_wonderland_trip_tych_poster_mad_hatter_johnny_depp_01.jpg

A new UK trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland has just premiered and other than the intro, it’s mostly identical to the US trailer Disney released earlier today.  However we do learn from this one is that Alice (Mia Wasikowska) escapes to Wonderland this second time to flee a marriage proposal, which leads me to believe there may be some slice-of-life element woven into the fantasy war epic.  Once in Wonderland, Alice plans to end the reign of the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter).  The film co-stars Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and the voice talents of Stephen Fry, Crispin Glover, Michael Sheen, and Alan Rickman among others.

I’m a huge fan of Burton’s aesthetic, but the more and more footage we see of the actual film, the more I worry for it.  Here we get a feel for the hand-to-hand combat, which, cool though it is, reminds me of Narnia or The Lord of the Rings.  This isn’t a bad take, per se, it’s just not exactly what I expect when I go to visit Wonderland, and I don’t think I’m alone.

Judge for yourself after the jump.  Alice in Wonderland hits theaters on March 5, 2010.

New ALICE IN WONDERLAND Trailer

Mia Wasikowska in Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland (1).jpg

Disney has released a new trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and you can check it out after the jump.  While the teaser trailer for Alice looked cool, this new trailer is definitely going to wow you with some pretty incredible visuals.  In fact, with this trailer, we’re finally getting a real taste of the movie and in my opinion…it looks like the perfect marriage between story and visuals.  Because if there was ever a place that Tim Burton was meant to bring to life, it’s the magical world of Wonderland.  Also, the way he’s making the film, with a mixture of live action, animation and CGI, I think it’s going to be amazing.  Check out the trailer and judge it for yourself:

Spike TV has posted a sort of new trailer Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”.  Though most of the footage will look familiar to anyone who caught the teaser trailer that Disney released a few months back, new footage is mixed throughout including extended shots of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter that hint at how spectacular the film will look in its Disney Digital 3D and IMAX formats.  Peek down the rabbit hole after the jump.
