First Full Trailer for Robert Rodriguez’s FROM DUSK TILL DAWN: THE SERIES

Robert Rodriguez‘s new television network El Rey has released the first trailer for its flagship series From Dusk Till Dawn: The SeriesD.J. Cotrona and Zane Holtz star as the Gecko brothers (subbing in for George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino in the 1996 movie), fighting the undead as they run from the law.  The production values fail to impress—the painful attempts at stylish cool don’t help—but hopefully it plays better in the context of the hourlong series than it does a two-and-a-half minute trailer.

Rodriguez directed the first two episodes of the ten-episode season.  Jesse Garcia, Don Johnson, Wilmer Valderrama, and Robert Patrick co-star.  From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series premieres March 11 on El Rey.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Blu-ray Review

Large explosions, death-defying aerobatics, flashing gunfire, and buff people talking about stuff in dramatic fashion. G.I. Joe: Retaliation gives audiences exactly what they’re expecting—nothing more, and nothing less—which can be a good thing.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation picks up where the first movie left off, with Duke (played by Channing Tatum) leading the elite fighting force in a number of missions against their hated foe, COBRA. While celebrating some much deserved downtime, the Joes are attacked by a squadron of COBRA helicopters and ground units, and are killed almost to a man, save for a few survivors. On the verge of eradication and marked as terrorists by their government, the Joes must uncover the face of their attackers and once again save the world’s governments from being overtaken by the diabolical Cobra Commander.  Hit the jump for my full review of G.I. Joe: Retaliation on Blu-ray.

TOP 5: THE WOLVERINE Trailers, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, First Trailer and Poster for WHITE HOUSE DOWN, PAIN & GAIN, THE HOST Interviews

Before I dive into the main topic of this week’s opening paragraph, just a quick disclaimer that the Top 5 will be taking a week off next Saturday to accommodate the first, and perhaps only, trip to Hawaii I will ever take. Here’s to hoping it’s less awkward but equally as life-changing and Kristen Bell/Mila Kunis-filled as Forgetting Sarah Marshall depicted. That said, while it fell just short of the cut this week, I still want to draw attention to the first trailer for director Adam Wingard‘s You’re Next that debuted on Thursday. As a horror fan, I’m always excited when a new entry in the genre gets lauded from both sides of the aisle (horror fans and those who aren’t as giddy about movies that make them think twice about turning out the lights). As far as I’m concerned, August 23rd can’t get here soon enough.

All Hawaii and horror fanboy talk aside, this week’s list offers up the first trailer(s) for The Wolverine, interviews with Dwayne Johnson and more for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the first trailer and posters for White House Down, a new red-band trailer for Pain & Gain, and The Host interviews with Saoirse Ronan and more. As you’re probably expecting, a brief recap and link to all of the above can be found after the jump.

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Review

If you’re going to make a movie designed to sell toys, you may as well show how much fun it is to play with them.  Although almost none of the original characters remain, G.I. Joe: Retaliation continues the spirit of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra by happily embracing big vehicles and weapons to deliver set pieces on steroids that never feel overbearing.  It’s not a particularly smart movie or one with compelling characters, but without any irony it takes one of the villain’s lines to heart: “America likes the guy who blows stuff up.”

TOP 5: VERONICA MARS Gets Kickstarted, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Set Visit, KICK-ASS 2 Trailer, JURASSIC PARK 4 Names Director, SXSW 2013 Coverage

by     Posted 1 year, 190 days ago

collider-top-5-slice

I’ve patiently waited for the opportunity to include Veronica Mars in the Top 5. As one of my favorite pop culture artifacts, I’m thrilled that this past week has finally afforded me the chance. That said, I’ll reserve any and all debate regarding the impact and merit of its now famed Kickstarter campaign for after the jump. For now, I’ll just say that, as much as I loved the show, I didn’t feel shortchanged by its somewhat abrupt finale. Moreover, I never felt like I needed a movie to bring some sort of closure to that world and its characters. Don’t get me wrong, by series end I wanted more VM in my life. But maybe that’s a good thing. Looking back I’d much prefer a series leave me wanting more than continually ask me back every week when it can barely muster even a shadow of its former self (cough…The Office…cough).

In addition to more Mars talk, this week’s collection also includes our G.I. Joe: Retaliation set visit, the first red-band trailer for Kick-Ass 2, Jurassic Park 4 naming its director, and all of our SXSW 2013 coverage to date. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each.

D.J. Cotrona Talks Playing Flint, His Relationships with Lady Jaye, Duke and Snake Eyes, and George Miller’s JUSTICE LEAGUE on the Set of G.I. JOE: RETALIATION

One of the new actors and characters making an appearance in G.I. Joe: Retaliation is D.J. Cotrona as Flint.  When the first Joe movie came out in 2009 (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), many fans were disappointed that Flint didn’t show up.  Clearly Hasbro/Paramount and the filmmakers heard the fans, as Flint is a huge part of the sequel.

During a group interview on the New Orleans set of Retaliaion, Cotrona talked about how he was cast, how Flint plays into the story, the action scenes, his relationship with Lady Jaye and Duke, his costume and the weapons,  whether he has scenes with Snake Eyes, what it was like to almost play Superman in George Miller’s Justice League movie, and a lot more.  Hit the jump for what he had to say.

Over the last few days, we’ve been treated to some character featurettes, recruitment videos and clips from director Jon M. Chu’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation.  Today, three new character featurettes have been made available.  They focus on Channing Tatum’s Duke, Adrianne Palicki’s Lady Jaye and D.J. Cotrona’s Flint, and reveal a few new bits of footage. (Cotrona’s might be a bit spoilery as there is an odd appearance of another cast member, though it’s out of context.)

Also starring Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Byung-hun Lee, Ray Park and Elodie YungG.I. Joe: Retaliation opens March 28th.  Hit the jump to watch the featurettes.

A new trailer for director Jon Chu’s sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation has been released.  As you’ll see, not much has changed other than the addition of more of Channing Tatum, which was one of the reasons for the film’s reshoots.  The other reason was for a 3D post-conversion, but we won’t know how that worked out until the trailer plays in theaters.  Ultimately, I can’t help but wonder if audiences will be scratching their heads as they ask, “Wasn’t this supposed to come out in last summer?”  Paramount is tasked with selling the movie all over again, and I do not envy them.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Adrianne Palicki, Walton Goggins, Ray Park, Byung-hun Lee, Elodie Yung, RZA, Ray Stevenson, and D.J. CotronaG.I.
