Disney has released a new theatrical trailer for the upcoming animated film Planes.  The film features the voice of Dane Cook as Dusty, a crop duster plane that dreams of being a racer, but because he’s not built for it, instead turns to a seasoned naval aviator to help him take on the defending champ of the racing circuit.  This trailer draws a strong connection between Planes and Cars, even though Pixar had nothing to do with the development or production of Planes.  Nevertheless, the two films appear to exist in the same universe.

Disney has released a new sneak peek at footage from its upcoming animated feature Planes.  If you weren’t already aware that Planes was originally destined for a direct-to-DVD release, this new bit of footage should clue you in.  From the incessant “rock” music to the cheesy dialogue, this one looks like it is aimed squarely at the kiddos and no one else.  That being said, airplanes are indeed a bit like magic when you’re a child, so one assumes this one will be a hit with the younger crowd.

Disney has announced that Dane Cook will voice the lead character “Dusty” in the upcoming Cars spin-off, Planes.  Dusty dreams of being a racer, but because he’s not built for it, he turns to a seasoned naval aviator to help him take on the defending champ of the racing circuit.  Cook previously did voice work in Farce of the Penguins, Mr. 3000, and an episode of the TV series, Duck Dodgers.  Cook had a pretty crummy run of feature films in the mid-2000s, but he did a treat turn in the little-seen Detention (“I make 40 ‘G’s’ a year plus dental. You may not have a Skittle.”), and he probably endeared himself to some folks for his guest spot on Louie.

Films with time-traveling bears tend to defy easy description.  So do movies where a teenager has alien fly mutant blood and was forced to wear a TV set on his hand as a child.  It’s also tough to describe a flick where a Ghostface-like slash wanders into the picture and isn’t the focal point.  Director Joseph Kahn has swirled all these elements and more into the delightful, abrasive lunacy of his new film, Detention.  The movie is a rapid-fire assault on the senses, and while it plucks at your neural pathways like an inbred hillbilly armed with a banjo and amphetamines, Kahn’s picture has sharp mind, a charming wit, and a scathing critique on nostalgia and the narcissism of teenagers both past and present.

Hey gang: Who’s up for another Dane Cook departure into serious acting? Well, you’re getting one anyway. The trailer for Answers To Nothing, the popular comic’s latest venture outside Good Luck Chuck territory, has been released. Set in Los Angeles, the film is a sombre ensemble drama about an unrelated (or so you think!) array of people “trying to do the right thing.” Cook plays a man conflicted about cheating on his wife with a cool rocker chick, while the search for a missing child and a seemingly very distraught beat cop also factor into things. Based on the trailer, it comes off a bit like a darker, less cohesive Crash.

Directed and co-written by Matthew Leutwyler (Dead and Breakfast, or more recently The River Why), the pic features a solid group of mostly TV thesps, including Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost) as Cook’s wife, Barbara Hershey (Black Swan) as Cook’s mother, Julie Benz (Dexter) as a police detective, and Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) as someone who doesn’t appear to be in the trailer. Distributed by Roadside Attractions, Answers to Nothing will begin a limited theatrical run on December 2. Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

A trailer has gone online for Joseph Kahn’s bizarre-looking new film Detention.  While the trailer cracks a joke at the expense of Kahn’s previous film, Torque, it’s an odd mish-mash that recalls gooey high-school comedies, Scream, and The Breakfast Club.  I don’t know what to make of this movie and that’s exciting.  The film will be making its premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and I’ll be interested to hear the response.

After putting his best foot forward with work in films like Training Day and both Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, it looks like Ethan Hawke taking post at Fox with his first major TV series. Deadline reports the actor will both star in and produce Exit Strategy, a potential series which would focus on a team of 5 experts associated with the CIA who are deployed when an operation goes bad to extract those in danger before it’s too late. Hawke would play the team leader, the architect of the plan who would rather die than fail them. Set up as a procedural, each episode would deal with a different crises at different locales around the world. The pilot was written by Safe House screenwriter David Guggenheim and several unnamed A-List directors apparently already circling the project. Sounds like a decent replacement for Fox’s now finished action series 24, and with Hawke attached, we’ll likely see it get picked up for next season.

Christian Slater, Gary Oldman, and Dane Cook have signed on to star in Michael Winnick’s stylized crime thriller, Guns Girls, & Gambling.  This news depresses me because I thought we were done with Dane Cook.  He tried to start up a movie career, it thankfully didn’t work out, and he went away.  I’m not sure if it will be sad or funny when Slater and Oldman act him off the screen.

According to Heat Vision, “The story throws Elvis impersonators, Indians, modern cowboys, a 6-foot-tall blond assassin, a frat boy, a corrupt sheriff and a prostitute into a chase for a priceless American Indian artifact stolen during a poker game at an Indian casino.”  You know those frat boys: Always going after priceless American Indian artifacts.  HV says “Slater plays a normal guy who in a drunken stupor joins an Elvis impersonation contest. Oldman is the contest’s mega-contender, and Cook will play the sheriff.”  This marks yet another non-comedy for Cook following Good Luck Chuck, My Best Friend’s Girl, and Employee of the Month.
