Rooney Mara and Dane DeHaan to Star in Musical ZIGGY

Though Dane DeHaan recently made his superhero movie debut, it appears that he’s keen on switching things up in the near future by leading a full-on musical.  The actor is attached to star in the original musical Ziggy alongside Rooney Mara, which will revolve around a hunchback escape artist (DeHaan) who arrives in New York in the late 1920s and falls in love with the fiancé of a powerful media mogul.  Mara will play the aforementioned love interest, and the story will chart Ziggy’s rise to stardom and subsequent fall “amid a romantic world crashing down on its own impossible idealism.”  The picture comes from writer/director Diesel Schwarze, a protégé of Baz Luhrmann.

Dane DeHaan and Jeff Baena Talk LIFE AFTER BETH, Their Own Zombie Apocalypse Survival Skills, Beth’s Stove, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 and More

When you think about taking a grounded approach to bringing a zombie apocalypse to screen, you might go right to dark, gritty and super violent, but writer-director Jeff Baena took a different approach to it.  He strove to make his zombie apocalypse real not by upping the body count, but rather by highlighting interpersonal dynamics and specifically by focusing on what might happen if someone’s (Dane DeHaan) recently deceased girlfriend (Aubrey Plaza) came back home in Life After Beth.

With the film making its way towards an August 15th limited release, Baena and DeHaan sat down to talk about developing the idea, its unique blend of comedy and drama, one very heavy stove, whether or not they could survive a zombie apocalypse themselves and more.  Hit the jump to check it out.

New LIFE AFTER BETH Clips Tease Comedy Over Horror

life-after-beth-clips

I’m not gonna lie, I’m sort of excited for Life After Beth.  I’ve heard that director Jeff Baena’s film is fun yet slight, but it seems like the kind of slight I could get into.  And A24 has just released two clips that continue to further my anticipation of a film I might enjoy in the most casual of ways.  The film stars Dane DeHaan as a young man whose girlfriend (Aubrey Plaza) comes back from the dead, only to start deteriorating into a flesh-craving zombie.  One of these new clips highlights the apparent fact that smooth jazz can soothe a zombie while the other is more of a John Hughes-ish look at the dynamic between DeHaan and his older brother in the film that has a bit of a “Wyatt vs. Chet” Weird Science vibe.

You can also check out Adam’s Sundance interviews with Plaza & DeHaan and writer/director Jeff Baena.  The film also stars Matthew Gray Gubler, Paul Reiser, Anna Kendrick, and Cheryl HinesLife After Beth debuts exclusively on DirecTV on July 17th and opens in limited release on August 15th.

SINISTER SIX Release Date Set for November 11, 2016; THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 Pushed to 2018

Two Sony superhero projects that seemed to be very much in doubt over the past few months (ever since The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to match expectations at the box office) are now back on the map in a major way.  Sony has just announced firm release dates for both the villain spinoff The Sinister Six and The Amazing Spider-Man 3.  It’s not all confetti though, since this means The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will be pushed one year beyond the already rumored release date shift to 2017.

All of this means that The Sinister Six release date will be November 11th, 2016 while The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has to wait all the way until May 4th, 2018.  That last date might not be such a bad thing, as it gives Sony and director Marc Webb (if he stays attached) more time to course correct a franchise that has been sinking at an alarming rate.  Hit the jump for more on The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and Sinister Six release dates.

LIFE AFTER BETH Clip: Dane DeHaan’s Girlfriend Is Back from the Dead

A24 Films has released a new Life After Beth clip for director Jeff Baena’s upcoming comedy.  The film stars Dane DeHaan as a young man whose girlfriend (Aubrey Plaza) comes back from the dead, only to start deteriorating into a flesh-craving zombie.  This new clip comes from a scene early in the film, when DeHaan barges into his girlfriend’s house where he finds her parents (played wonderfully by John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon) are keeping their reanimated daughter hidden.  I caught the pic at Sundance and while it’s very funny, it has a little trouble settling on a tone.  At times it’s a straight-up comedy, at other times it’s a relationship drama, and at other times it’s a flat-out zombie movie.  Nevertheless, Plaza turns in a delightful performance as the titular Beth, proving her range goes much further than deadpan.

LIFE AFTER BETH Trailer and Posters: Dane DeHaan Tries to Keep Love Alive with a Dead Aubrey Plaza

A24 has released the Life After Beth trailer online along with a couple of posters.  The movie follows a young man (Dane DeHaan) whose girlfriend (Aubrey Plaza) comes back from the dead, but now has an appetite for human flesh.  Even though I heard mixed things about the movie after it premiered at Sundance, this trailer makes it look delightfully weird and darkly comic.  I really like the cast, and I hope that I’m more positive on the movie than my peers.

I’ll say this much for The Amazing Spider-Man 2: it’s unique. I can’t recall a film off the top of my head that delivers one cringeworthy moment after another, eye roll upon eye roll, only to stick the landing and actually make me semi-look forward to the next installment. As many have stated already, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are actually quite good in the film as its emotional anchors. As much as I enjoy Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man (and love his Spider-Man 2), I’ll take Garfield over Tobey Maguire as my wall-crawler of choice any day of the week. Still yet, that doesn’t change the fact that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a tonal mess for about 90% of its runtime. To make matters worse, Jamie Foxx‘s Electro is so poorly written, and so ridiculously portrayed, that he’d be right at home in a Joel Schumacher Batman movie. And yet, that ending still resonates with me and I’m kind of interested to see what’s next. Like I said, it’s unique.

We’ll talk more about The Amazing Spider-Man 2 after the jump with Matt’s review and Steve’s video interviews. In addition, this week’s Top 5 also highlights the Star Wars: Episode VII cast announcement, the new international Godzilla trailer, Zack Snyder officially landing the Justice League directorial gig, and the first trailer for the excellent looking doc The Internet’s Own Boy. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Review

the-amazing-spider-man-2-review

When Sony decided to reboot Spider-Man, it was a bit of surprise since Sam Raimi‘s series still had life in it, and everyone involved in the production was eager to return for a fourth installment.  But the studio cravenly hit the restart button, and even though they hired a director with great potential and a strong cast, The Amazing Spider-Man was a weak return for the wall-crawler.  It was too gritty and the plot was an utter mess based on coincidence with entire plotlines cut to ribbons (what happened to Irrfan Khan?).  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 wants to function as a reboot of a reboot, and while it’s marginally better than its predecessor, it suffers from an overstuffed plot where no one seems to be on the same page.  There’s a fun, lighthearted tone that always peeks out, especially in the scenes between Peter (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen (Emma Stone) as well as Spidey at his most buoyant.  But that vibrancy is always snuffed out by ridiculous villains, cheap motivations, and shiny but lifeless action scenes.

Now playing around the world and opening in North America this weekend is director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  As most of you know, the follow-up finds Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) surrounded by antagonistic forces as Electro (Jamie Foxx) emerges, Parker’s old friend Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) returns to New York City, and everyone seems to have a connection to the shady goings-on at Oscorp.  The film also stars Emma StonePaul GiamattiSally FieldChris Cooper, B.J. At the recent New York City press day, I landed an exclusive video interview with Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan.  They talked about bad plastic surgery, how much control over their costumes and the way they looked, if the script changed during production, how they made it more kid friendly, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

KILL YOUR DARLINGS Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 200 days ago

kill-your-darlings-daniel-radcliffe-dane-dehaan-slice

Telling the true story of someone’s life in a film is a difficult task.  The trappings of the biopic genre become glaringly apparent when filmmakers try to chronicle an entire life in a two-hour film.  There are innumerable events over the course of a person’s lifespan that alter him or her, for better or worse, and humans are always undergoing change.  Trying to discern which events are most important is a futile effort, and more often than not, the cradle-to-grave biopic results in a droll feature.  However, when the filmmaker focuses on a constrained period of time in a person’s life and frames an entire film around that, the results can be fascinating.  Such is the case with writer/director John Krokidas’ drama Kill Your Darlings, which chronicles the early college years of poet Allen Ginsberg and the beginnings of the Beat movement, using that as a springboard to explore themes of rebellion, obsession, and self-discovery.

The result is an ambitious, bombastic debut feature for Krokidas, buoyed by a pair of fearless performances from Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan.  My full Kill Your Darlings Blu-ray review follows after the jump.

Extended TV Spot for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Contains Even More New Footage

In case you haven’t seen enough of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 yet, Sony has released an extended TV spot containing even more new footage.  I’m curious as to why they keep doing this.  Are they worried people won’t come out to see a Spider-Man movie?  It’s Spider-Man.  People will see it.  It will sell lots of toys and other merchandise.  It’s also the first movie of the summer blockbuster season (no disrespect to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but summer blockbuster season begins on the first weekend of May; it’s science).  Does giving so much of the movie away really benefit anyone?  I guess if you can’t get enough of the movie before you see the movie, then you’re over the moon about the company’s marketing campaign.

New Images from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Provide a Good Look at Green Goblin’s Glider [Updated with Hi-Res]

Despite the fact that the movie doesn’t open for over a month, Sony is nowhere near done with it’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 marketing blitz.  Today’s batch of new images offer a behind-the-scenes look at the practical version of Green Goblin’s (Dane DeHaan) glider, another look at Paul Giamatti’s Rhino, and then a couple of other images that might cross the line into possible spoiler territory.  It’s been said to death, but given the amount of footage and such that we’ve seen from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it feels like we have enough to plot out the entire story.  Despite feeling overwhelmed by it, the footage actually looks quite good, so hopefully director Marc Webb still has plenty of surprises waiting for moviegoers on opening weekend.

Novak, and Chris CooperThe Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on May 2nd. [Update: We've updated the article with high-resolution versions of some of the images.]

A New Look at Dane DeHaan as the Green Goblin in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

A new image of The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) has been released.  It’s not an image from the film, but rather a close-up that highlights the character’s grotesque details.  It’s definitely a far cry from the Green Goblin armor used in Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man, but armor is still part of the costume.  Now it’s just that cybernetic implants, bad hair, bad skin, and bad teeth are part of the design.  They’ve even put on a prosthetic pointy nose to make him appear more goblin-like.  Clearly, the character’s transformation process is falling from an ugly tree and hitting every branch on the way down.
