New THE BOOK OF LIFE Trailer Continues to Feature Gorgeous Animation and Silly Characters

20th Century Fox has released a new The Book of Life trailer.  Produced by Guillermo Del Toro and directed by Jorge Gutierrez, the film revolves around three childhood friends—Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoe Saldana), and Joaquin (Channing Tatum)—who find themselves in a love triangle as the gods wager on who will win Maria’s heart.  Manolo is the central character of the story, as he dreams of breaking his family tradition of bullfighting to become a guitar player.  Over the course of the fantastical story, audiences are taken to The Land of the Living, the Land of the Remembered, and the Land of the Forgotten as Manolo seeks to live a complete and fulfilling life that is remembered by the living.  The movie continues to look absolutely gorgeous, and I’m curious to see if the plot and characters can match the visuals.

First THE BOOK OF LIFE Trailer Featuring the Voices of Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, and Channing Tatum

20th Century Fox has released the first The Book of Life trailer.  Inspired the Mexican holiday “Day of the Dead”, the film revolves around three childhood friends—Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoe Saldana), and Joaquin (Channing Tatum)—who find themselves in a love triangle as the gods wager on who will win Maria’s heart.  While the story of the gods interfering with the lives and loves of mortals is one of the oldest tales in human history, it’s refreshing to see a feature that pulls from Mexican mythology.  Equally appealing is the unique visual style of the film.  I’m sure there’s a proper term for it, but characters and settings already feel 3D in a 2D viewing experience.  They seem carved, or crafted from papier mache, more reminiscent of games like “Little Big Planet” than anything we’ve seen in the animated world lately.  A gorgeous, eye-catching, and colorful introduction to this bold take on Dia de los Muertos.

The new FX multi-camera comedy series Saint George follows the chaotic life of George Lopez (conveniently played by George Lopez, who also co-created, executive produces and writes the show), a recently divorced working-class Mexican-American man turned successful entrepreneur.  Struggling to balance the parenting demands of his all-American Anglo ex-wife (Jenn Lyon) and the cultural expectations of his overbearing Mexican-American mother (Olga Merediz), he also has to figure out how to relate to his 11-year-old son (Kaden Gibson), his freeloading uncle Tio (Danny Trejo) and his cousin Junior (David Zayas).

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Danny Trejo talked about why he wanted to work with George Lopez, who he’s known for about 20 years, how much he enjoys doing comedy, that his character is part freeloader and part ladies’ man, that Tio is clearly a better uncle than father, and getting to do some physical comedy on the show.  He also talked about his most recently finished film, Bad Ass on the Bayou with Danny Glover, how much fun he had working with bad-ass chick Gina Carano on In the Blood, what it was like to be a part of Muppets Most Wanted, and crying on Kermit’s shoulder when he learned that his mother died while he was shooting the movie in London.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

MACHETE KILLS Blu-ray Review

I wrote four separate intros to this review, each of them detailing the highs of Robert Rodriguez’s career. But if you’re reading Collider, you already know. The $7,000 Spanish language action flick funded with money earned while working as a medical test subject that turned an ambitious young outsider with no connections into a commercial juggernaut so successful and prolific that he launched five franchises – all in different genres – built his own backlot, and now is about to launch his very own television station, The El Ray Network. And while the Horatio Alger story of Troublemaker Studios and Rodriguez’s D.i.Y. enthusiasm still inspires, the films have long since gone limp. If you already know Rodriguez’s story, you probably already know everything that Machete Kills has to offer. And just like most of the z-grade schlock it aspires to, it’s more fun in concept than it is in practice.

Disney has released a new trailer for director James Bobin‘s upcoming sequel Muppets Most Wanted.  In the follow-up, the gang is on a successful tour in Europe but gets into trouble when Kermit gets confused with his jewel-heisting doppelganger, Constantine. I really enjoyed 2011′s The Muppets, but almost everything I’m seeing from this sequel is doing nothing for me.  It’s not a bad premise, and it’s amusing to see Constantine try to impersonate Kermit, but it’s still a fairly tired plot and there’s almost none of the irreverence or wackiness I’d expect to see from a Muppet movie.  Here’s hoping it’s just a bad trailer and not a bad movie.

Hit the jump check out the new trailer and images, and find out about some of the cameos.  The film stars Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, and Ty Burrell.  Muppets Most Wanted opens March 21, 2014.

Watch: Trailer for MACHETE KILLS AGAIN… IN SPACE

When Robert Rodriguez first announced firm plans for a Machete sequel at Comic-Con a few years back, he added that he was envisioning a trilogy that would be capped by a space-set Machete film.  Judging by the poor box office receipts for Machete Kills (it finished with a paltry $14 million worldwide), a third film seems highly unlikely, but we have a little preview of what might have been by way of a trailer for Machete Kills Again…In Space.  The fake trailer played in front of Machete Kills, but seeing as how very few people actually saw the sequel in theaters, it has now landed online for all to see.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer, which features appearances by Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Alex Vega, Lady Gaga, and a couple of other celebrity “cameos.”

Danny Trejo Talks DEAD IN TOMBSTONE, Filming in Romania, the Action Sequences, His Acting Process, Future Projects, and More

When director Roel Reine’s shoot-em-up western Dead in Tombstone was filming in Romania last year, I got to visit the set along with a few other online reporters.  The film starsDanny Trejo as the leader of a gang of outlaws who frees his half-brother (Anthony Michael Hall) from prison in order to loot a mining town.  The plan backfires when Hall double crosses Trejo and kills him.  Trejo makes a deal with the devil (Mickey Rourke) and comes back from the dead to seek revenge.  As Patrick said in his Blu-ray review, “Dead in Tombstone has some really impressive stunts and set-pieces – from horse-drawn carriage flips to chandelier swings (classic!) and massive explosions – and they’re all staged and shot better than most Hollywood action fare.  One particular explosion near the end looks impossibly large, though no CGI was used.  Action fans will definitely want to check out this unique supernatural revenge thriller.”

During my on set video interview with Danny Trejo, he talked about how he got involved in the project, what it’s like to shoot in Romania, his admiration for Anthony Michael Hall, his preparation process, the action sequences, his experience on Sons of Anarchyplans for Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again, Death Race 3, and so much more.  Hit the jump to watch.

DEAD IN TOMBSTONE Blu-ray Review

Director Roel Reiné is one of the better filmmakers of the current DTV action market.  His Death Race 2 and 3 pushed the low-budget action envelope and with his latest, Dead in Tombstone, he continues to deliver the most bang for the buck.  Of course, if you’re looking for any kind of higher stimulation beyond huge explosions and tremendous stunt set-pieces, take a hike.  Reiné really puts his stars Danny Trejo, Mickey Rourke, and Anthony Michael Hall through the wringer in this fun, totally absurd tale of supernatural revenge.  More information on Universal’s Blu-ray of Dead in Tombstone after the jump.

New MACHETE KILLS Clip Continues to Market the Film by Featuring Sofia Vergara’s Breasts

One of the first posters for Machete Kills focused on the fact that Sofia Vergara’s character had a bra that doubled as a chain-gun.  It was a cute concept, but Open Road Pictures seems bent on driving that joke into the ground.  They’ve released a new clip that once again puts the focus on Vergara’s breasts, and while I’m sure male audience members aren’t going to complain, it’s a little lame at this point.  It’s also a sign that Machete (Danny Trejo) is probably a small part of his own movie yet again.  Then again, the real star of Machete and Machete Kills are hokey gimmicks, and the bra gun certainly qualifies.

Ten new images have been released from Robert Rodriguez’ Machete Kills.  The film centers on Machete’s (Danny Trejo) quest to stop an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has plans to spread war and anarchy across the planet.   Judging by what we’ve seen so far, it looks like more of the same, so if you liked the original Machete, then Machete Kills should be right up your alley of violence and mayhem.  The movie is set to screen this evening as the opener of Fantastic Fest 2013, so expect some reactions to start hitting the Internet later tonight.

A new red-band trailer for director Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming sequel Machete Kills has been released online, and it’s just the right amount of silly.  The film centers on Machete’s (Danny Trejo) quest to stop an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has plans to spread war and anarchy across the planet.  The trailer shows off plenty of unbridled carnage at the hands of Trejo’s Machete, but we also get to see more of Mel Gibson’s villainous character, who describes himself as a “fucker-people-upper.”  It remains to be seen whether the film will be fun and absurd rather than just absurd, but it looks like we’ll get to see one hell of a Mel Gibson performance regardless.

The first clip from director Robert Rodriguez’s sequel Machete Kills has landed online, and it’s fittingly ridiculous.  The film centers on Machete’s (Danny Trejo) quest to stop an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has plans to spread war and anarchy across the planet.  In this clip, we see a car chase between Trejo’s Machete and a car full of angry women, including Sofia Vergara, Alex Vega, and Lady Gaga.  The clip not only shows a gun-wielding, cigarette-toting Lady Gaga crash hard, but we also see Vergara go after Machete with a couple of interestingly placed weapons.
