Universal Pictures has released a batch of high-resolution Neighbors images from director Nicholas Stoller’s (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Five-Year Engagement) new comedy.  The film stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a married couple with a newborn baby who must deal with a fraternity—fronted by Zac Efron—when it moves in next door.  Response to the pic’s premiere at the SXSW Film Festival was highly positive, and the trailers released thus far have promised an incredibly funny R-rated comedy.  That’s no surprise when you have comedic talents like Rogen and Byrne heading up the film, but Efron has drawn strong notice as well and I’m eager to see his interplay with the Rogen/Bryne pairing.

New Red-Band Trailer for 22 JUMP STREET Starring Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube

Sony Pictures has released a new 22 Jump Street red-band trailer.  Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller return for the comedic sequel, along with stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, who move from the halls of high school to the college campus this time around.  This trailer put to rest any doubts I had about the sequel.  Comedy sequels are rarely funnier than the first movie, but this looks like it could be as funny as 21 Jump Street, which is saying something because I fucking love that movie.

Universal has released two new red-band trailers for Nicholas Stoller‘s upcoming comedy, Neighbors.  The film stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a married couple who must deal with a fraternity—headed up by Zac Efron—when it moves in next door.  I’ve heard nothing but good things about the movie (click here to read Perri’s review from SXSW), and Universal clearly has a lot of faith in it.  I wouldn’t be surprised if this ended up being the breakout comedy of the summer.  What’s great about these trailers is that even though they’re red-band, there are jokes that are funny even though they’re not R-rated.

SXSW 2014: NEIGHBORS Review

neighbors-review-zac-efron

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne versus a horde of out-of-control frat boys with Zac Efron at the helm; who wouldn’t want to see how that battle plays out?  Neighbors is light on character development, ridden with logic issues and doesn’t flow particularly well, but director Nicholas Stoller never loses sight of that chief appeal, resulting in a feature that may not be particularly memorable, but is still a fun watch. At any given time, James Franco is attached to write, direct, produce, star in, and adapt so many different projects that it’s hard to keep track.  However, Franco just set another future project in motion that is particularly intriguing.  Deadline reports that Franco’s Rabbit Bandini Productions has optioned the book and life rights to The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, which is chronicles the making of Tommy Wiseau’s “so-bad-it’s-good” cult classic The Room.  Franco will direct and co-produce the adaptation, and he has also expressed interest in starring in the pic alongside his brother Dave Franco.  Moreover, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are onboard as executive producers.

30 Things to Know About Nicholas Stoller’s NEIGHBORS Starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Dave Franco

Last year, when director Nicholas Stoller’s (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) R-rated comedy Neighbors was filming here in Los Angeles, I got to visit the set with a few other reporters.  The film stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a young couple with a newborn baby that has a fraternity–headed up by Zac Efron‘s character –move in next door.   The thirty-somethings soon find themselves the victims of pranks and other unsightly activities after an attempt to welcome the Delta Psi Beta chapter goes awry.  Neighbors also stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Dave Franco, Jake Johnson, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Mantozoukas, and Lisa Kudrow.

During breaks in filming, I was able to participate in group interviews with Rogen, Efron, Mintz-Plasse, Franco, Barinholtz, Stoller, producer Evan Goldberg and screenwriters Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien.   They talked about making the film, what it’s about, the atmosphere on set, Mintz-Plasse’s massive penis, Efron’s abs, their extremely graphic, homoerotic handshake for the fraternity in the film, and so much more.  Hit the jump for 35 things to know about the film.  Neighbors opens May 9th.

Universal Pictures has released a new theatrical trailer and poster for director Nicholas Stoller’s (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) comedy Neighbors.  The film stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a married couple who must deal with a fraternity—headed up by Zac Efron—when it moves in next door.  This trailer features some of the same jokes from the previous (and very funny) red-band trailer, but we also get a taste of just how wild things get as the film takes a promising premise and pushes things further and further.  The De Niro stuff with Efron and Dave Franco is still great, and Jason Mantzoukas (Raffi from The League) pops up at the end of the trailer in what’s sure to be a fun hospital sequence.

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s comedy sequel 22 Jump Street, and it’s red-band.  The film finds Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) infiltrating a college campus, and their partnership is tested again except this time they’re back in the roles they had when they were in high school for real—Jenko is the jock, and Schmidt is in the bohemian art scene.  It’s a red-band trailer for language, and the crime-fighting duo are up to their same old tricks: swearing, locking and loading, infiltrating the dealers, and finding the suppliers.  There’s also a couple of fun, unexpected cameos at the end.

Universal has released a new trailer for Nicholas Stoller‘s new comedy, Neighbors.  The film stars Seth Rogen and Rose Bryne as a married couple who must deal with a fraternity when it moves in next door.  Universal is getting a big jump on the movie (it doesn’t open until May), but they could have a great one here.  Like the red-band trailer, I got plenty of laughs not only from Rogen and Byrne, but also from Zac Efron, who plays the lead frat boy.  My only concern from a marketing standpoint is that Universal might give away too many jokes in the long lead-up to the film’s release.  Hopefully, that won’t be the case.

First Red-Band Trailer for NEIGHBORS Starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, and Rose Byrne

Universal Pictures has released the first red-band trailer for director Nicholas Stoller’s (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) new comedy Neighbors.  Previously titled Townies, the film stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a young couple who move in next door to a fraternity house.  The thirty-somethings soon find themselves the victims of pranks (and other unsightly activities) after an attempt to welcome the Delta Psi Beta chapter goes awkwardly awry.  There are plenty of great snippets of what are sure to be funny moments throughout the picture as Neighbors takes a look at the hard-partying Greek life of films like Old School, Animal House and PCU from the viewpoint of the squares on the outside.  And while Christopher Mintz-Plasse doesn’t get any dialogue, he sure does get a moment.

The first images from Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller’s new comedy Neighbors have landed online ahead of a trailer debut later tonight.  The film stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a young couple with a newborn baby who move in next door to a fraternity house.  Clashing ensues between Rogen’s character and the frat boys, headed up by Zac Efron.  In these new images we see a few of the fraternity hijinks, as Efron and Dave Franco look to be dressed up as different Robert De Niro characters for some reason.

NOW YOU SEE ME Sequel in the Works; Filming Planned for 2014

now-you-see-me-2-sequel

One of the biggest box office surprises of 2013 thus far has been director Louis Leterrier’s magician heist pic Now You See Me.  The $75 million film went on to gross $115.6 million domestically, and it’s international total now stands at $119.3.  When you consider that some major studio tentpoles (ahem The Lone Ranger) have failed to cross the $100 million mark stateside, that is an incredibly impressive performance; obviously this means it’s time to make a sequel.  THR reports that Lionsgate and Summit are moving forward with a follow-up film, with production currently “penciled in” for 2014.  Should that plan stick, we could expect to possibly see Now You See Me 2 hit theaters in 2015.  Hit the jump for more.

James Franco Planning to Adapt THE SOUND AND THE FURY; Eyeing Jon Hamm, Dave Franco, and Danny McBride to Star

Even though his adaptation of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying received mixed reviews at Cannes, James Franco is planning to adapt another work from the revered author.  According to The L.A. Times, Franco is looking to helm The Sound and the Fury, and will write the script with his As I Lay Dying co-writer Matt Rager.  Like Faulkner’s other novels, The Sound and the Fury is a tough adaptation.  Narratively, it’s about the decline of the Compson family in the fictional county of Yoknapatawpha in the early 20th century.  But what makes it special is the various points of view and writing style.  Going inside the head of manchild Benjy is more rewarding than simply showing that character on screen.  That being said, I don’t know how Franco plans to approach the material, so perhaps he has a take to match Faulkner’s unique writing.

NOW YOU SEE ME Review

by     Posted 328 days ago

The opening line of Louis Leterrier‘s Now You See Me warns “The closer you look, the less you’ll see.”  But it doesn’t matter how closely or carlessly you look because there’s not much worth seeing in the film.  For a movie that centers on magicians, the most spectacular thing about Now You See Me is how spectacularly it wastes both its premise and its cast.  Leterrier seems torn between wanting to provide cool magic tricks that could conceivably be performed in real life, and then he swings wildly to effects-laden set pieces.  The story also doesn’t seem to have much affinity towards magicians since it portrays them as smug and self-satisfied.  But the film’s most egregious trespass is taking an outstanding cast and forgetting to give them characters.  The movie should craft an intriguing illusion, but aside from some clever moments and Mark Ruffalo‘s performance, Now You See Me is a cheap trick.

With director Louis Leterrier’s (The Incredible Hulk) magician-centered thriller Now You See Me opening May 31st, I recently went to New Orleans to interview the cast.  For those unfamiliar, the story follows an FBI squad on the heels of a team of bank-robbing magicians who share their profits with the audience, and the pic boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine, Melanie Laurent and Morgan Freeman.  For more on the film, watch six clips, or check out all our previous coverage

During my interview with Dave Franco, he talked about how much fun he had making the movie, what he learned about magic, what it was like working for Louis Leterrier and  his always moving camera, and more.  In addition, he talked about if he’ll be in the 21 Jump Street sequel, and reveals Nicholas Stoller‘s Townies features tons of male nudity.  Hit the jump to watch.
