One of the more surprising box office hits of last year was the magician adventure pic Now You See Me.  The film had a solid opening weekend, but it continued to do swell business in the ensuing weeks, going on to gross $351.7 million worldwide against a budget of $75 million.  As with most successful studio films where everyone doesn’t die at the end, Summit Entertainment began to move forward on a prospective sequel.  Following the official Now You See Me 2 announcement, Summit expressed its desire to begin filming in 2014, and while director Louis Leterrier was expected to return, he’s currently busy gearing up to helm the action-comedy Grimsby.  As such, Summit is on the hunt for a new director for the magician sequel, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation helmer Jon M. Chu is reportedly at the top of their list.  More after the jump.

TOP 5: NEIGHBORS, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, First Trailer for GOTHAM, New Live-Action POWER RANGERS Movie, SNOWPIERCER Trailer

Now available via On Demand and iTunes, and in limited theaters June 6th, is writer/director Ti West‘s The Sacrament. I wrote about my anticipation for the film a few months ago and I finally got the chance to check it out last night. For those unaware, the pic utilizes the found footage conceit to immerse viewers in a story akin to that of the Jonestown Massacre of 1978. West fans will likely note how the found footage approach and the emphasis on psychological terror over more conventional scares set The Sacrament apart from the filmmaker’s previous work. In spite of those differences, it utilizes the same slow burn before all hell breaks loose in the final act approach employed by The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers to great effect. Anchored by fantastic pacing and a mesmerizing performance from Gene Jones as the sect’s leader “Father”, the result is West’s most disturbing and lingering film to date.

In addition to a wholehearted recommendation for The Sacrament, this week’s Top 5 also features our review of and interviews for Neighbors, the new trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the first trailer for Fox’s Gotham, word of a new live-action Power Rangers film, and an excellent red-band trailer for Bong Joon-ho‘s Snowpiercer. Discover a brief recap and link to each of the above after the jump.

NEIGHBORS Review

neighbors-review

Even though Nicholas Stoller‘s Neighbors is packed with great jokes, the through line is about growing up without losing your identity.  Too often, “maturity” simply means “the absence of youth”.  We put away the fun, unencumbered life for the staples of a steady job and a loving family.  Neighbors seeks to find the balance between the responsibility of an adult without obliterating our young, joyful selves.  The movie not only manages to find the humor in this struggle, but it also provides a good metaphor for Stoller’s growth as a director.  By stepping out of Judd Apatow‘s endlessly riffing shadow, Stoller has delivered his best film yet.

New International Trailer for 22 JUMP STREET Starring Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube

A new international trailer for 22 Jump Street has gone online.  Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller return for the comedic sequel, along with stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, who move from the halls of high school to the college campus this time around.  The plot still seems to involve busting a drug ring, but that’s secondary to Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko’s (Tatum) hilarious shenanigans such as proper grenade storage and failing to improvise.  Lord and Miller look like they haven’t missed a step, which is high praise considering how much I adore 21 Jump Street.

Neighbors-Zac-Efron-Dave-Franco-interview

Opening this weekend is director Nicholas Stoller’s extremely funny R-rated comedy Neighbors.  The film stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a married couple with a newborn baby who must deal with a fraternity—fronted by Zac Efron—when it moves in next door.  Response to the pic’s premiere at the SXSW Film Festival was highly positive, and the theater I was in loved the film.  It’s definitely something you should see with a big audience next weekend.  Neighbors also stars Dave FrancoChristopher Mintz-PlasseJake JohnsonIke Barinholtz, Carla Gallo, Jerrod Carmichael, and Lisa Kudrow.

A few days ago at the New York City press junket I landed an exclusive video interview with Zac Efron and Dave Franco.   They talked about inappropriate t-shirts, making Neighbors, how much they improvise versus thinking about the scene beforehand, if they were asked to say anything that went too far, and they talk about their X-rated handshake that even Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg thought went too far.  Hit the jump to watch.

Universal Pictures has released a batch of high-resolution Neighbors images from director Nicholas Stoller’s (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Five-Year Engagement) new comedy.  The film stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a married couple with a newborn baby who must deal with a fraternity—fronted by Zac Efron—when it moves in next door.  Response to the pic’s premiere at the SXSW Film Festival was highly positive, and the trailers released thus far have promised an incredibly funny R-rated comedy.  That’s no surprise when you have comedic talents like Rogen and Byrne heading up the film, but Efron has drawn strong notice as well and I’m eager to see his interplay with the Rogen/Bryne pairing.

Sony Pictures has released a new 22 Jump Street red-band trailer.  Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller return for the comedic sequel, along with stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, who move from the halls of high school to the college campus this time around.  This trailer put to rest any doubts I had about the sequel.  Comedy sequels are rarely funnier than the first movie, but this looks like it could be as funny as 21 Jump Street, which is saying something because I fucking love that movie.

Universal has released two new red-band trailers for Nicholas Stoller‘s upcoming comedy, Neighbors.  The film stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a married couple who must deal with a fraternity—headed up by Zac Efron—when it moves in next door.  I’ve heard nothing but good things about the movie (click here to read Perri’s review from SXSW), and Universal clearly has a lot of faith in it.  I wouldn’t be surprised if this ended up being the breakout comedy of the summer.  What’s great about these trailers is that even though they’re red-band, there are jokes that are funny even though they’re not R-rated.

SXSW 2014: NEIGHBORS Review

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne versus a horde of out-of-control frat boys with Zac Efron at the helm; who wouldn’t want to see how that battle plays out?  Neighbors is light on character development, ridden with logic issues and doesn’t flow particularly well, but director Nicholas Stoller never loses sight of that chief appeal, resulting in a feature that may not be particularly memorable, but is still a fun watch. At any given time, James Franco is attached to write, direct, produce, star in, and adapt so many different projects that it’s hard to keep track.  However, Franco just set another future project in motion that is particularly intriguing.  Deadline reports that Franco’s Rabbit Bandini Productions has optioned the book and life rights to The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, which is chronicles the making of Tommy Wiseau’s “so-bad-it’s-good” cult classic The Room.  Franco will direct and co-produce the adaptation, and he has also expressed interest in starring in the pic alongside his brother Dave Franco.  Moreover, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are onboard as executive producers.

30 Things to Know About Nicholas Stoller’s NEIGHBORS Starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Dave Franco

Last year, when director Nicholas Stoller’s (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) R-rated comedy Neighbors was filming here in Los Angeles, I got to visit the set with a few other reporters.  The film stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a young couple with a newborn baby that has a fraternity–headed up by Zac Efron‘s character –move in next door.   The thirty-somethings soon find themselves the victims of pranks and other unsightly activities after an attempt to welcome the Delta Psi Beta chapter goes awry.  Neighbors also stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Dave Franco, Jake Johnson, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Mantozoukas, and Lisa Kudrow.

During breaks in filming, I was able to participate in group interviews with Rogen, Efron, Mintz-Plasse, Franco, Barinholtz, Stoller, producer Evan Goldberg and screenwriters Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien.   They talked about making the film, what it’s about, the atmosphere on set, Mintz-Plasse’s massive penis, Efron’s abs, their extremely graphic, homoerotic handshake for the fraternity in the film, and so much more.  Hit the jump for 35 things to know about the film.  Neighbors opens May 9th.

Universal Pictures has released a new theatrical trailer and poster for director Nicholas Stoller’s (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) comedy Neighbors.  The film stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a married couple who must deal with a fraternity—headed up by Zac Efron—when it moves in next door.  This trailer features some of the same jokes from the previous (and very funny) red-band trailer, but we also get a taste of just how wild things get as the film takes a promising premise and pushes things further and further.  The De Niro stuff with Efron and Dave Franco is still great, and Jason Mantzoukas (Raffi from The League) pops up at the end of the trailer in what’s sure to be a fun hospital sequence.

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s comedy sequel 22 Jump Street, and it’s red-band.  The film finds Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) infiltrating a college campus, and their partnership is tested again except this time they’re back in the roles they had when they were in high school for real—Jenko is the jock, and Schmidt is in the bohemian art scene.  It’s a red-band trailer for language, and the crime-fighting duo are up to their same old tricks: swearing, locking and loading, infiltrating the dealers, and finding the suppliers.  There’s also a couple of fun, unexpected cameos at the end.
