If you’re a fan of the Death Race franchise, you’re in luck, because director Roel Reine is back again with a new trailer for Death Race 3: Inferno. The property kicked off in 2008 with Jason Statham as a prisoner racing against other inmates to win his freedom. The follow-up film was a prequel, introducing Luke Goss as the seemingly invincible racer, Frankenstein. Death Race 3: Inferno sees the return of Goss as Frankenstein as the competition now heads to a new locale: South Africa’s Kalahari Desert. One of the many films to show off new footage at Comic-Con was writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson‘s Resident Evil: Retribution. In the series’ fifth installment, Alice (Milla Jovovich) continues her search across the globe for those responsible for the deadly outbreak. Things take a twist, however, when she runs into a few familiar faces. The film also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Sienna Guillory, Kevin Durand, Shawn Roberts, Colin Salmon, Johann Urb, Boris Kodjoe, and Li Bingbing. For more on the film, here’s the first trailer, 25 things to know about the movie from my set visit, some new images, and our Comic-Con panel recap.
Shortly after the panel, I sat down with writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson for an extended interview. We talked about the scope of Resident Evil: Retribution, how post-production has been going, test screenings, the action, viral marketing, and more. Universal 1440 Entertainment has announced that filming is currently underway on Death Race 3 in South Africa. Luke Goss, Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames, Fred Koehler, Robin Shou, and Tanit Phoenix reprise their roles from Death Race 2, joined by franchise newbies Dougray Scott and Hlubi Mboya. Universal 1440 executive Glenn Ross promises fans:
“Death Race 3 will exceed their expectations with even more explosive action, elaborately outfitted cars, inventive weaponry and death-defying stunts that have made the franchise such a huge fan favorite.”

Anderson’s 2008 remake of Death Race having success at the worldwide box office and on home video, Universal decided to make a prequel and they’re releasing it this week under the banner of “DVD Originals from Universal Studios Home Entertainment Productions.” While the remake starred Jason Statham as Jensen Ames, the prequel stars Luke Goss, Sean Bean, Tanit Phoenix, and Danny Trejo. The film is an origin story for the character of Frankenstein.
Anyway, I recently got to speak with most of the cast and after the jump you can watch my interview with Danny Trejo. In Death Race 2, Trejo plays a Mexican Jew mechanic named Goldberg. During the interview we talked about how he prepares as an actor, what films do people always want to talk to him about, was he upset he didn’t get to kick a lot of ass in Death Race 2, future projects like Spy Kids 4, Machete sequels and Harold and Kumar 3 (A Very Harold And Kumar Christmas), and a lot more. Moviehole revealed today that actor Luke Goss will be taking on the title role in Universal’s upcoming Death Race: Frankenstein Lives, a direct-to-DVD sequel/prequel to the 2008 film by Paul W.S. Anderson.
The new film focuses on Luke, newly arrived to prison after killing a cop during a botched bank robbery. Once on Terminal Island, Luke goes behind the wheel to race his way to freedom and becomes the Frankenstein character that Jason Statham’s character ends up taking over the role of during the events of the first film. Tony Giglio wrote the script for the prequel and Dutch filmmaker Roel Reine takes over directorial duties from Anderson, who elected not to return for the next lap of the Death Race series.
