Season 2 of the FX crime thriller The Bridge has Detective Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger) and her Mexican counterpart, Detective Marco Ruiz (Demián Bichir) teamed up again to when the body of a cartel member is found on U.S. soil.  Brutal crimes and dangerous enemies will see them pulled into a complex web of drug running, money laundering and police corruption.  This season also stars Ted Levine, Matthew Lillard, Emily Rios, Thomas M. Wright, Annabeth Gish, Franka Potente, Nathan Phillips, Abraham Benrubi and Lyle Lovett.

During this exclusive interview with Collider, actor Demián Bichir talked about how excited he was to explore new avenues of the story for The Bridge Season 2, that he likes the way the show doesn’t label one country as good and the other as bad, the importance of keeping the promises you set up over the course of a season, having his brother Bruno on the show this season, working with such a talented cast, and playing a character that is very clear about where he wants to go and how he wants things to be done.  He also talked about the experience of shooting his directorial debut, Refugio (which he also wrote, produced and starred in), that he can’t wait to direct again, and how he’d like to direct an episode of The Bridge.  Check out what he had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

DOM HEMINGWAY Blu-ray Review

dom-hemingway-blu-ray-review

Director Richard Shepard’s comedy Dom Hemingway tells you exactly what kind of film it is with its opening scene: Jude Law delivers an ode to his, um, member, directly into the camera while engaging in a certain act in a prison shower.  It’s vulgar and hilarious all at the same time, and Law delivers the lines with such gusto that you’re inclined to take this guy’s word for it.  The rest of the film is an absolute delight, but particularly the first act is a whirlwind mix of hilarity, sadness, and pure boldness as we follow the titular Hemingway’s very specific path to rehabilitation after being released from prison.  Read my full Dom Hemingway Blu-ray review after the jump.

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.  Dom Hemingway opens today in limited release.]

If the Oscars had a category for Most Creative Use of Vulgar Language (and they should), writer-director Richard Sheperd would be worthy of a Lifetime Achievement Award for Dom Hemingway. Rarely has the use of dirty words become a virtuoso masterpiece of language, but Dom Hemingway turns swearing into high art. Sheperd provides the words, but star Jude Law brings them to vile, explosive, hilarious life in what may be the best performance of his career thus far. There’s also a story and character development that’s all well and good, but Dom Hemingway is mostly about grabbing us by the throat and pummeling us with filthy, hilarious speeches and one-liners.

Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer for Richard Sheperd’s Dom Hemingway.  The film stars Jude Law and revolves around the titular character being released from prison and going to get the hush money he’s owed.  I saw the film at TIFF, thought it was painfully funny, and I can’t wait to see it again.  I would caution against watching this trailer in order to avoid spoiling the jokes, but this trailer is pretty misleading.  It emphasizes the softer, more uplifting aspects of the story, and while that’s a part of the film, it’s almost an afterthought.  It’s there to provide a character arc.  The meat of the picture is Dom being unhinged, offensive, and swearing up a storm.  But this is a green-band trailer, so it’s tougher to sell that stuff.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Richard E. Grant, Demian Bichir, Emilia Clarke, Kerry Condon, Jumayn Hunter, Madalina Ghenea, and Nathan Stewart-JarrettDom Hemingway opens April 4th.

The red-band theatrical trailer for writer/director Richard Sheperd’s new film Dom Hemingway has been released online.  The pic stars Jude Law and revolves around the titular character being released from prison and going to get the hush money he’s owed.  The film drew strong marks from its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, with Matt noting that Sheperd’s screenplay “turns swearing into high art” and calling it possibly Law’s best performance to date.  After watching this red-band trailer, it’s tough to argue with either of those statements.

FX Renews THE BRIDGE for Season Two

FX has ordered a second season of the drama series The Bridge.  Starring Demian Bichir and Diane Kruger, the show focuses on tensions at the US-Mexico border as told through the unlikely pairing of an El Paso police officer (Kruger) and a Chihuahua State Policeman (Bichir) who initially team up to track down a serial killer.  The 13-episode second season will debut in Summer 2014, while the show’s first season is currently heading toward its season finale on October 2nd.  When the show began it was fairly promising, but I felt the character development just wasn’t enough to keep me invested and ended up checking out around episode six or seven.

Nevertheless, I’m interested to hear if those that stuck with it have found this first season to be fulfilling.  Hit the jump to read the press release and sound off in the comments below.

First Trailer and New Images for DOM HEMINGWAY Starring Jude Law

I loved Dom Hemingway when I saw it at the Toronto International Film Festival a couple weeks ago.  I thought it was blisteringly funny, I was laughing throughout, and Jude Law was absolutely brilliant.  I’m actually a little upset I can’t see it again until it opens in the spring in the U.S.  The movie centers on the eponymous character (Law) being released from prison, and going to get the hush money he’s owed.  The U.K. trailer has gone online, and it’s got so much good stuff that I almost hesitate in recommending that you watch it.  The whole film is hilarious, so there are plenty of great jokes that aren’t in here including all the ones that involve the vulgar language.  But if you need some convincing about how hard you’ll laugh during this film, it’s worth watching.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer along with new images.  The film also stars Richard E. Grant, Emilia Clarke, Jumayn Hunter, Madalina Diana Ghena, and Demian BichirDom Hemingway opens in the U.K on November 15th, and in the U.S. on April 4, 2014.

Ten new images have been released from Robert Rodriguez’ Machete Kills.  The film centers on Machete’s (Danny Trejo) quest to stop an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has plans to spread war and anarchy across the planet.   Judging by what we’ve seen so far, it looks like more of the same, so if you liked the original Machete, then Machete Kills should be right up your alley of violence and mayhem.  The movie is set to screen this evening as the opener of Fantastic Fest 2013, so expect some reactions to start hitting the Internet later tonight.

The first clip from director Robert Rodriguez’s sequel Machete Kills has landed online, and it’s fittingly ridiculous.  The film centers on Machete’s (Danny Trejo) quest to stop an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has plans to spread war and anarchy across the planet.  In this clip, we see a car chase between Trejo’s Machete and a car full of angry women, including Sofia Vergara, Alex Vega, and Lady Gaga.  The clip not only shows a gun-wielding, cigarette-toting Lady Gaga crash hard, but we also see Vergara go after Machete with a couple of interestingly placed weapons.

A new trailer has been released for Robert Rodriguez’ Machete Kills.  The film centers on Machete’s (Danny Trejo) quest to stop an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has plans to spread war and anarchy across the planet.  This new trailer provides more of a “plot” synopsis, but mostly gives us a look at the supporting cast, which includes Lady Gaga, Cuba Gooding Jr., Antonio Banderas, and Mel Gibson as the villain.  Judging by this new trailer, Rodriguez has run out of ways to make Machete fun and interesting, and is now just making a really long Funny or Die video where celebrities briefly take on ridiculous roles.

Demian Bichir Talks THE BRIDGE, Joining the Show and Relating to His Character, Educational Value of the Story, and Cultural Differences in the U.S. and Mexico

The FX drama series The Bridge, adapted from the Scandinavian series Bron, is a present-day crime thriller that explores the tensions on the U.S.-Mexico border.  When an American judge known for her anti-immigration views is found dead on the bridge connecting El Paso and Juarez, El Paso P.D. Detective Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger) must work with her Mexican counterpart, Detective Marco Ruiz (Demian Bichir), to catch a serial killer operating on both sides of the border.  The show also stars Ted Levine, Annabeth Gish, Thomas M. Wright and Matthew Lillard.

During this recent interview to promote the series, actor Demian Bichir talked about what made him want to be a part of this show, the educational value of the story they’re telling, the evolution of the relationship between Marco and Sonya, the cultural differences between working in the U.S. and working in Mexico, how much he relates to his character, and what he hopes American audiences take away from watching this show.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

THE BRIDGE Review: FX’s Border Crime Drama Builds Slowly, But Is Worth the Wait

by     Posted 1 year, 112 days ago

the-bridge-diane-kruger-demian-bichir-slice

Though the setup of FX’s new drama series The Bridge has a litany of familiar crime show elements — a straight-laced female detective paired with a laid-back male cop, for starters — over its first few episodes it unfolds into a beautiful patchwork of sprawling storytelling that is linked through a serial killer with political agenda, but not beholden to it.  The Bridge is adapted from a Scandinavian drama of the same premise, where detectives from two different border towns must work together when a body is found severed on the borderline itself.  In FX’s version, the border is the United States and Mexico, and the towns El Paso and Juarez, the latter being a notorious site of drugs and violence, particularly against women.  The serial killer who left the severed body has a statement to make about the crimes in Juarez and about immigration, and the story goes deep when exploring it.  Hit the jump for more on why you should, no matter what, watch past the pilot.

Fox Searchlight has picked up the North American distribution rights to Richard Shepard‘s dark comedy crime film Dom Hemingway.  The film stars Jude Law as a safe-cracker who gets out of prisoner and sets out to obtain what he’s owed.  However, a near-death experience leads him to try and re-connect with his estranged daughter (Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke).  I really enjoyed Shepard’s 2005 flick The Matador, so I’ll be keeping this flick on my radar when it opens next year.

First Trailer for MACHETE KILLS [Updated]

Open Road Films has released the first trailer for director Robert Rodriguez’s sequel Machete Kills.  The film centers on Machete’s (Danny Trejo) quest to stop an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has plans to spread war and anarchy across the planet.  This trailer was released on Yahoo!’s Spanish-language site, but the dialogue is in English.  It looks like fun, but so did Machete, which made Trejo a supporting character in his own movie.  A large cast is fun, but Rodriguez always seems to have trouble finding the right balance (he had the same problem with Once Upon a Time in Mexico).  Hopefully, Machete Kills will be an improvement on the first film. [Update: We've added the English-language version, which is the same except now English-language speakers can understand the narration]
