Prisoners and Enemy director Denis Villeneuve continues to put together the cast for his next film, Sicario.  The pic already has Emily Blunt set in the lead as an officer from Tuscon who travels across the border to Mexico with a pair of mercenaries in order to track down a drug lord, and now Variety reports that Josh Brolin is in talks to co-star.  The nature of Brolin’s role is unspecified, but the cast also includes Benicio Del Toro and the recently added Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead).  Brolin will be seen later this year in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Paul Thomas Anderson’s highly anticipated Inherent Vice, and he most recently wrapped the survival drama Everest.

Emily Blunt to Star in PRISONERS Director Denis Villeneuve’s Next Film SICARIO

Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is a busy guy.  Last fall saw the release of his Hugh Jackman thriller Prisoners, his head-scratching/terrifying Enemy with Jake Gyllenhaal is in theaters now, and this morning we learned that he’ll be teaming up with Amy Adams on sci-fi thriller called Story of Your Life.  However, before he delves into sci-fi, he’ll first direct a thriller called Sicario starring Emily Blunt.  Variety reports that Blunt will lead the pic as an officer from Tuscon who travels across the border to Mexico with a pair of mercenaries in order to track down a drug lord.  That’s a promising premise with Villeneuve attached to direct, but what’s most exciting about the project is that it’s a female-led thriller with an incredibly talented actress in the lead role.

Hit the jump for more on Villeneuve’s next project and why it’s an admirable choice for the director.

Amy Adams May Star in Denis Villeneuve’s Sci-Fi Thriller STORY OF YOUR LIFE

by     Posted 152 days ago

Amy Adams deserves to be the true lead in a film again.  She’s still been a force in numerous films over the past several years including The Fighter, The Master, Man of Steel, Her, and American Hustle to name a few.  But the last time she was truly front-and-center was in 2010′s Leap Year.  That simply will not do.  However, she might be getting back to center stage if she signs on to the sci-fi thriller Story of Your Life.

According to Deadline, Adams is in early talks to play the lead.  The film, directed by Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) based on the short story by Ted Chiang and adapted by Eric Heisserer (The Thing remake/prequel), centers on an expert linguist who learns to communicate with aliens who have crash landed around the planet.  As she begins to communicate with them, she starts to have vivid flashbacks that could reveal the true reason for their visit.  It sounds like an interesting role, and definitely a change up for both Adams and Villeneuve.  Hit the jump for a recap of Adams’ other upcoming projects.

A few featurettes for two upcoming films have landed online.  Firstly, three new behind-the-scenes videos for director Terry Gilliam’s new film The Zero Theorem offer a look at the costumes, the main set, and Gilliam’s directorial process.  The pic stars Christoph Waltz as Qohen Leth, a computer hacker who searches for the meaning of life while being distracted by Management, a shadowy figure from an Orwellian corporation.  Also starring Melanie Thierry, Tilda Swinton, and David Thewlis, the film opens in the U.K. on March 14th and is currently awaiting a U.S. release date.

Additionally, a new 4-minute featurette for director Denis Villeneuve’s (Prisoners) twisty thriller Enemy has been released online.  The story revolves around a university lecturer (Jake Gyllenhaal) who discovers that he has a double, whom he tracks down and engages, resulting in “a complex and dangerous struggle.”  This new behind-the-scenes video offers a look at how Villeneuve managed to create two Gyllenhaals in the same scene.  Also starring Maline Laurent, the film is currently available on DirecTV and will open in theaters March 14th.

PRISONERS Director Denis Villenueve to Investigate Alien Invaders in THE STORY OF YOUR LIFE

Fun fact: six 2013 releases were voted into the current IMDB Top 250.  The sixth movie on that list is Prisoners, which I must admit surprised me.  The movie earned a modest $122 million worldwide and landed just one Oscar nomination for legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins, but connected with a passionate audience.  Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve already has another movie with Jake Gyllenhaal, Enemy, set for a March 14 release, but Villeneuve had no trouble lining up the next project.

Heat Vision reports Villeneuve signed on to direct an adaptation of Ted Chiang Nebula-winning short story The Story of Your Life.   Eric Heisserer (The Thing) penned the script about an expert linguist recruited by the military to determine whether alien invaders come in peace : “As she learns to communicate with the aliens, she begins experiencing vivid flashbacks that become the key to unlocking the greater mystery about the true purpose of their visit.”  Production is tentatively scheduled for later this year.

Warner Bros. Reportedly Eyeing Paul Greengrass to Take Over THE STAND

Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Stand has gone through plenty of ups and downs over the past few years, and it just recently lost its director—again.  Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace) joins Ben Affleck and David Yates on the list of filmmakers who were at one point attached to tackle the post-apocalyptic tale but bowed out for one reason or another.  It’s a difficult adaptation for sure, but Warner Bros. is still aiming high for the property, as Captain Phillips helmer Paul Greengrass currently tops the list of candidates the studio is keen on taking over the project.  Hit the jump for more.

First Teaser Trailer and Poster for TIFF Hit ENEMY Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jake Gyllenhaal

Director Denis Villeneuve (Incendies) makes his studio debut with this weekend’s solid thriller Prisoners starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, but Villeneuve also has another Gyllenhaal-fronted film poised to be released soon, and it’s decidedly more twisted.  Enemy, like Prisoners, debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, and while I was unable to make it to any screenings of the pic, I heard plenty of great/terrifying things about the film from others.  Gyllenhaal stars as a paranoid teacher who believes that he has found his exact doppelganger and he sets out to find out who this person is.  I’ve been told not to learn too much about the film before going in, but this teaser trailer and excellent poster are damn tantalizing.

Hit the jump to check out the teaser trailer and poster.  The film also stars Melanie Laurent and Sarah Gadon and recently secured distribution from A24 Films.

PRISONERS Review

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.  Prisoners opens tomorrow.]

There’s enough symbolism and religious themes to give Prisoners some weight. There’s enough curiosity to keep its mystery intriguing. Director Denis Villeneuve does slightly more than expected to keep us interested in its segregated storyline where one hand provides the mystery and the other hand provides some semblance. In between is a film that’s far longer than it needs to be but is supported by Roger Deakins’ striking cinematography and a great cast with a standout performance from Hugh Jackman.

Opening this weekend is director Denis Villeneuve‘s (Incendies) Prisoners.  The film stars Hugh Jackman as a working-class father who sets out to track down the man he believes is responsible for kidnapping his daughter and her friend.  Along the way, he runs up against the big city detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) assigned to the case.  The pic, which was shot by cinematographer Roger Deakins, also stars Paul Dano, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard, and Viola Davis.  For more on Prisoners, watch the trailer, five clips, or read Matt’s review

Last week at the Toronto International Film Festival, I landed an extended video interview with Villeneuve.   He talked about making a movie like this within the studio system, his first assembly cut being three-and-a-half hours, deleted scenes, what it was like to work with Roger Deakins, the challenge of balancing the thriller aspect of the story with the character focus and keeping the mystery compelling, and a lot more.  While Hollywood puts out a lot of mediocre movies, this is not one of them.  I definitely recommend checking it out this weekend.  Hit the jump for the interview.

New Trailer for PRISONERS Starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for director Denis Villeneuve’s (Incendies) dramatic thriller Prisoners.  The film stars Hugh Jackman as a working-class father in Pennsylvania who sets out to track down the man he believes is responsible for kidnapping his daughter and her friend. Along the way, he runs up against the big city detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) assigned to the case.  While I was worried that the first trailer gave away the entire film, this new trailer hints that there’s much more to the pic than meets the eye.  The real grab for me, though, is the character-driven story and intense performances from Jackman and Gyllenhaal, not to mention cinematographer Roger Deakins’ gorgeous camera work.  Really, really looking forward to this one.

Along the way, he runs up against the big city detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) assigned to the case.  The film certainly appears to do justice to a dramatic telling of a parent’s worst nightmare, but it goes further than that, asking to what lengths a person would go to in order to return their children home safely.  Unfortunately, as is the case with many recent trailers, too much of the story is given away too soon.
