Here's today's latest casting news:

Denzel Washington (Man on Fire) is in early talks to star in Shovel Ready, a Warner Bros. adaptation of journalist Adam Sternbergh's debut dystopian novel.
Melissa Leo (The Fighter) has joined Mark Webber's The Ever After, described as a "hard examination of a marriage." Rosario Dawson (Trance) is also in talks to join.
Josh Duhamel (Transformers) will join Lucas Till in Strings, an ensemble drama directed by Daniel Duran.

Hit the jump for more on each film.

First up from Deadline is news that Washington is in early talks for Shovel Ready, a story that takes place in a future war-torn New York City. The "population escapes reality by tapping into a digital fantasy world, a contract killer is hired to kill the daughter of a powerful, maniacal evangelist. Ultimately, the killer becomes the girl’s protector." Washington is currently prepping to shoot Antoine Fuqua's The Equalizer.

Leo has joined The Ever After in an undisclosed role. The picture stars Webber and Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies) in the lead roles from a script they wrote together. Per the press release: "The Ever After follows the artistic footsteps of The End of Love, blurring the lines between reality and fiction, using real life relationships, friends and family members to enhance the films overall feeling of realism." Dawson, rapper Kid Cudi, Phoebe Tonkin and Hart of Dixies’ Jaime King are also in talks to join the film. Leo recently joined the above-mentioned Fuqua film and will be seen in Lee Daniels' The Butler and next fall's M. Night Shyamalan’s Fox ...

The cast of the long-in-development adaptation of the 1980s TV series The Equalizer is starting to come together. Denzel Washington has been set for quite some time in the lead role of a former covert operations officer who dedicates his life to helping people in trouble. The production has seen both Nicolas Winding Refn and Rupert Wyatt enter and exit the director’s chair over the past couple of months, but Washington’s Training Day helmer Antoine Fuqua is now firmly set to bring the film to fruition. As they move towards a production start date later this year in anticipation of an April 11, 2014 release date, Fuqua has now cast his female lead, and it’s a bit of a surprising choice: Chloe Grace Moretz.

Hit the jump for more, including information on the Taxi Driver-esque character that Moretz will play and a continuation of the original character in book form.

Washington and Fuqua looked at at a number of actresses for the female lead in The Equalizer, but Deadline reports that both were wildly impressed with Moretz after the 16-year-old did a chemistry reading with Washington. The role was originally envisioned for a twentysomething, but the part will now be redrawn for Moretz, who will play a young prostitute. The hardboiled nature of the film and Moretz’s character bring to mind shades of Taxi Driver, and it’ll be interesting to see how the interplay between Washington and Moretz develops onscreen.

Moretz has made some interesting choices as of late, with the teenager making ...

Universal has released the first trailer, poster, and a few new images for director Baltasar Kormakur's (Contraband) actioner 2 Guns. The film is based on the graphic novel of the same name and stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg as operatives from competing government bureaus who are disavowed and forced to go on the run together after a mission goes wrong. I'm happy to see that the pic doesn't take itself too seriously, as there's a nice sense of humor blended in with the more action-geared aspects of the story. Washington and Wahlberg have some very promising chemistry, and 2 Guns looks like it could be a nice breath of fresh air in a sea of gritty, dark, and unrelenting action films that populate the marketplace. Also, Bill Paxton as the villain? Yes please.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, poster, and some new images. The film also stars Paula Patton, James Marsden, and Edward James Olmos. 2 Guns opens August 2nd.

Here’s the synopsis for 2 Guns:
Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg lead an all-star cast in 2 Guns, an explosive action film that tracks two operatives from competing bureaus who are forced on the run together. But there is a big problem with their unique alliance: Neither knows that the other is an undercover federal agent.

For the past 12 months, DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington) and U.S. naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg) have been reluctantly attached at the hip. Working undercover as members of a ...

Airline pilots, for the most part, are like the mysterious man behind the curtain. Passengers only get a glimpse of them when exiting the plane and hear their voices once in a while over the intercom. These guys have hundreds of lives in their hands and we just take it for granted that they are not drunk out of their minds. Robert Zemeckis' Flight is about a very talented alcoholic pilot who averts a major disaster and winds up nosediving right into his dark inner-demons. More on Paramount's Flight Blu-ray after the jump.

Denzel Washington plays William "Whip" Whitaker, an extremely talented commercial airline pilot who also happens to be a massive alcoholic and cocaine user. Booze and blow are what keep him going and somehow he manages to fly under their influence. During a routine flight between Orlando and Atlanta, the plane suffers a major wing malfunction and winds up in a speeding nosedive. Whip, who just downed two nips of vodka, pulls out all his skills and intuitive talents to stop the plane's rapid descent and crash it into a field - saving the lives of all but six passengers.

The plane crash scene is absolutely harrowing. It's the kind of scene that will terrify anyone who's afraid of flying. It goes on for about seven minutes and every second had my ass clenching tighter. Robert Zemeckis, the editor, and the effects crew created a perfectly suspenseful and thrilling moment with that crash. Bravo, fellas.

Whip awakens in a hospital room ...

As Sunday’s 85th Annual Academy Awards loom closer, we’ve using this week as an opportunity to take a look back at how the past year’s Oscar race has played out in a number of categories. We first took a look at the ebbs and flows in the Best Supporting Actor category, and then we chronicled the road that lead us to the Best Supporting Actress nominees. Today we’re examining the Best Actor race, which actually seemed to be all wrapped up months before the nominees were even announced. Hit the jump to read on.

2012’s Best Actor race kicked off incredibly early with the Sundance debut of The Sessions. Star and veteran character actor John Hawkes pleasantly surprised audiences in 2010 with a very deserving Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his work in Winter’s Bone, and he looked poised for Oscar recognition once again with his transformative performance in The Sessions. In fact, many members of the press at Sundance were ready to declare him a frontrunner for Best Actor—all the way back in January.

Hawkes remained a top contender for the trophy throughout the summer, as no viable candidates materialized until the fall films started popping up. However, competition started getting stiff around September. Whenever Daniel Day-Lewis decides to grace us mere mortals with an onscreen performance we’re always blown away, so months before anyone had even seen so much as an image from Lincoln, Day-Lewis was considered a serious candidate for the Best Actor trophy. That being said, the ...

Denzel Washington's previous directing efforts, Antwone Fisher and The Great Debaters met with positive critical response even though they didn't smash up the box office, which wasn't really necessary since they're both small, character-driven dramas. It's been six years since Washington got behind the camera, but it looks like he's eyeing the director's chair for an adaptation of August Wilson's play Fences. In 2010, Washington co-starred in the Broadway revival alongside Viola Davis, and won the Best Actor Tony for his work.

Hit the jump for more.

Washington tells Empire [via Hitfix] about Fences:
"It reawakened me about the work, and my commitment to the work," he told Empire of taking on the role. "I said to myself: 'I've got to dig deeper. The reason I did 'Fences' is that Scott Rudin sent me the script August Wilson wrote - the only one of his plays that he wrote as a screenplay - to act and direct. I really do want to direct [the film version]."
Per Hitfix, "Set in the 1950s, Fences centers on 53-year-old Troy Maxon, an urban trash collector haunted by his unfulfilled dream of becoming a baseball star." It's unknown if Washington would act in the film or if Davis would reprise her role, but it would be wonderful to see them on screen for those who never saw them together on Broadway.

While Washington has stuck mostly to action films, he was recently nominated for Best Actor for his dramatic performance in Robert Zemeckis' Flight. The two-time Oscar winner will ...

Working undercover as members of a narcotics syndicate, each man distrusts his partner as much as the criminals they have both been tasked to take down.

When their attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel and recover millions goes haywire, Trench and Stigman are suddenly disavowed by their superiors. Now that everyone wants them in jail or in the ground, the only person they can count on is the other. Unfortunately for their pursuers, when good guys spend years pretending to be bad, they ...

The nominations for the 85th Academy Awards have been announced, and it's quite a whirlwind of nominees. As expected, Lincoln landed the most nominations with 12, followed with Ang Lee's Life of Pi which nabbed 11. The big story here, though, is the Best Director category. Shockingly, only two (two!) of the DGA nominees for Best Director made the Oscar cut: Ang Lee and Steven Spielberg. The rest of the category was filled out by Benh Zeitlin for Beasts of the Southern Wild, David O. Russell for Silver Linings Playbook, and Michael Haneke for Amour. It was almost guaranteed that Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow would be landing nominations for Argo and Zero Dark Thirty, respectively, but shockingly neither made the cut. Apparently those films just directed themselves. Based off today's nominations, it now looks like it's (surprisingly) down to Lincoln vs. Silver Linings Playbook for the big win.

Hit the jump to check out the list of nominees, and click here to check them against my predictions (somehow I predicted the Best Picture and Supporting Actor categories perfectly). The 85th Academy Awards will take place on February 24th.

	Zero Dark Thirty

[Adam's note: By some miracle I predicted this category perfectly. I love Moonrise Kingdom and I'm sad not to see it land a nomination, but this is one of the more solid nominees lists in recent years. Not many "filler" nominees like Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close or The Blind Side. Based on today's nominations and how the guilds have been going so far, it looks like it's going to be down to Lincoln vs. Silver Linings Playbook for the win, ...

In December, we reported the exciting news that Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn was in talks to direct Denzel Washington in an adaptation of the 1980s crime series, The Equalizer. The show centered on Robert McCall (originally played by Edward Woodward), a former covert operations officer who dedicated his life to helping people in trouble. Washington will play McCall in the adaptation, although the movie will only share the conceit of the show. Unfortunately, we've learned that while Sony was close to closing a deal with Refn, the deal fell apart at the last minute due to unknown reasons.

We've also learned that Sony remains hot on adapting The Equalizer, and is continuing to search for a new director to start shooting in May with Washington still attached to star. If you want to get a better sense of the TV series, hit the jump to see the intro for The Equalizer. Refn's new film, Only God Forgives, opens on May 23rd. The director is still attached to the remake of Logan's Run and an adaptation of the graphic novel, Button Man.

At last, Oscar is upon us. Back in November I shared a look at the early awards season race by way of our 2013 Oscar Preview articles, and now nearly two months later there’s still quite a bit up in the air. This truly is one of the more exciting awards races in recent years, as 2012 is so stacked with quality that there are a surprising number of uncertainties this close to the Academy Awards ceremony. Nevertheless, I am once again foolishly going to attempt to predict how the Oscar nominations will shake out when they’re announced tomorrow morning, January 10th. Hit the jump to check out my predictions.

As was the case last year, there will be anywhere between 5 and 10 nominations for Best Picture. The math that comes up with the golden number is pretty complicated, but I hear that the formula makes it highly improbable for that number to hit 10 while it’s entirely possible for 9 films to be nominated. This all has to do with how many number one votes each film gets, and seeing as how there is still no consensus around one frontrunner for the trophy (or even two for that matter), I’m gonna go ahead and say there will be 9 nominees.

BEST PICTURE:

Lincoln

Argo

Zero Dark Thirty

Les Miserables

Life of Pi

Silver Linings Playbook

Amour

Beasts of the Southern Wild

Django Unchained

Alternates: Moonrise Kingdom, Skyfall, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

I don’t think we’ll be seeing many filler nominees this year akin to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close or The ...

Quite the interesting director/star pairing looks to be in the works. A remake of the 1980s crime series The Equalizer has been in development for the past few years, with Denzel Washington most recently signing on to star. Last we heard, Sony was compiling a shortlist of directors for the project, and on that list was Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn. The studio has finally made a decision on who will take the helm of the project, and it is indeed Mr. Refn. Hit the jump for more details, including a release date for Refn's next film Only God Forgives.

Per Heat Vision, Sony Pictures is in early talks with Refn to direct the Equalizer remake. Apparently things will be moving quickly, as filming scheduled to get underway in late spring in anticipation of an April 11, 2014 release date. The TV series centered on a former covert operations officer who dedicated his life to helping people in trouble on his own accord. While this may sound like slightly familiar territory for Refn, I’m incredibly excited by the prospect of a collaboration between Refn and Washington.

Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2) penned the loosely adapted screenplay, and Washington remains onboard in the starring role. Refn most recently completed his Drive follow-up, Only God Forgives with Ryan Gosling, and THR's report buries the news that it is set to open on May 23, 2013. He’s also developing the graphic novel adaptation Button Man and a Logan’s Run remake, though Gosling recently left the Logan’s ...

One of the many films opening next summer is director Baltasar Kormákur's (The Deep, Contraband) 2 Guns. Based on the Boom! Studios Graphic Novels by Steven Grant, 2 Guns is an action flick that stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg as operatives from competing government bureaus who are disavowed and forced to go on the run together after a mission goes wrong. The film also stars Paula Patton, Bill Paxton, James Marsden, Fred Ward and Edward James Olmos.

Recently I sat down with Kormákur for an extended video interview and he gave me an update on the project. He says he's trying to get Clinton Shorter to do the score, he's in the middle of editing (he's turning in his director's cut around Christmas) and the current cut is about 2 hours 10 minutes, trimmed down from 2 hours 25 minutes. When I asked him to describe the film, he pitched it as a pulpy comic adaptation that's "probably closer to 48 Hrs. than Bad Boys." He also told me his contract says 2 Guns will be R-rated, but he will only make it R if it makes the movie better. He doesn't mind cutting an F-word. In addition, when I asked him to compare it to Contraband, he said 2 Guns relies less on big action, "hopefully there is more fun in the action than necessarily big explosions." Hit the jump for more.

Before getting to the interview, here's the full synopsis for 2 Guns:

The 2013 awards race is in full swing, and what better way to spend the Thanksgiving holiday then to take a closer look at how the categories are shaping up thus far? Over the next few days we’re providing a bit of an overview of what the state of the race looks like at this point in time. Yesterday we ran down the contenders for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, and today we’ll be taking a look at the fiercely competitive categories for Best Actor and Best Actress. Hit the jump to read on.

If you missed our introductory piece that ran down the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories, click here.

As a reminder, Les Miserables, Zero Dark Thirty, and Django Unchained have yet to screen for critics, so at this time I’ve automatically disqualified them from the “Frontrunners” category. Obviously we’ll see some major contenders emerge from each film, but for the purpose of this preview I’ve simply placed them in the “Likely to Be Nominated” or “Other Contenders” categories.
Best Actor
Frontrunners:

	Daniel Day-Lewis – Lincoln
	Joaquin Phoenix – The Master
	John Hawkes – The Sessions

Likely to Be Nominated:

Bradley Cooper – Silver Linings Playbook
	Denzel Washington – Flight

Other Contenders:

	Hugh Jackman – Les Miserables
	Anthony Hopkins – Hitchcock
	Christoph Waltz – Django Unchained
	Jamie Foxx – Django Unchained

For your consideration:

	Joseph Gordon-Levitt – Looper

This year’s Best Actor race is one of the most exciting in recent memory, as we have a bounty of incredible performances to mull over as 2012 comes to a close. Daniel ...

I've seen two films that deal with alcoholism this year, and Robert Zemeckis' Flight is the weaker of the two. Earlier this year, I saw Smashed, an honest, unflinching look at a woman struggling to get sober. In all fairness, Flight isn't about the quest to get sober, as much as it brushes up against interesting notions of control. Unfortunately, these notions become overshadowed as the film boils down the protagonist's weakness into obvious plot points, character motivations, and a sermonizing finish that undermines the promise of a more textured, thoughtful story.

If the guy who works bagging groceries down at the local supermarket is a drug addict, it's very sad, but your life isn't exactly in his hands. The problem becomes somewhat more serious when the addict is an airline pilot like Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington). Whip has no problem drinking and doing coke at the crack of dawn before getting on board to pilot a commercial airline. He's a functioning addict, but his abilities become severely tested when his plane suffers a mechanical failure. Shockingly, he manages to bring the craft down and save the lives of almost all the passengers. While he's being hailed as a hero by the media, Whip's life becomes jeopardized as the NTSB uncovers a couple of telltale vodka bottles in the trash. Meanwhile, Whip struggles with alcoholism while finding a partner in Nicole (Kelly Reilly), a fellow addict.

Zemeckis manages to captivate from the start with a darkly comic opening that shows off Whip's ...

Flight marks the first pairing of Academy Award winners Denzel Washington and director Robert Zemeckis, who returns to live-action dramatic storytelling after a decade of success on the forefront of directing and producing movies utilizing motion capture technology. The screenplay by John Gatins centers on Captain Whip Whitaker (Washington) who miraculously crash lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe, saving nearly everyone on board, but then becomes the target of a follow-up investigation that raises troubling questions about what really happened. Flight also stars John Goodman, Don Cheadle, Melissa Leo, Kelly Reilly, and Bruce Greenwood.

At the film’s recent press day, Washington, Zemeckis, Gatins, Goodman, Leo, Reilly, and Greenwood discussed making the dramatic thriller, what drew them to the project, the attraction and challenges of portraying complex, morally ambiguous characters, setting up a pivotal scene that pays homage to Hitchcock, and writing a suspenseful script that invites the audience to ride along with virtually every character while deciding which one to root for. Greenwood also shared his own harrowing tale of a real-life air travel experience he will never forget, and Washington revealed his recurring dream about flying and reminisced about the 20th anniversary of Malcolm X.

Question: Denzel, any actor would want to play something so brilliantly written as this role. Was the attraction also personal in the sense that everybody has known people whose lives have been destroyed by addiction?

DENZEL WASHINGTON: No. I think it was just the material. When I read the script, I just said “Wow, this is ...

Director Robert Zemeckis puts a decade of motion capture behind him and returns to live-action fare with Flight, starring Denzel Washington. The John Gatins screenplay centers on a pilot (Washington) who miraculously lands a malfunctioning plane, only to become the focus of a follow-up investigation. Today, we have an exclusive clip to share with you and it is a doozy. It shows off the inciting incident of Flight while highlighting Washington's grace under pressure, though the same can't be said for his co-pilot (is it his first day?).

Also starring John Goodman, Don Cheadle, Melissa Leo and James Badge Dale, Flight opens on November 2nd. Hit the jump to check out our exclusive clip, and click here for over 20 images from the film.

The clip for Zemeckis' Flight follows below:

After the crash, Whip is hailed as a hero, but as more is learned, more questions than answers arise as to who or what was really at fault, and what really happened on that plane?

A new extended TV spot for director Robert Zemeckis’ drama Flight has been released. Denzel Washington stars as a commercial airline pilot who is heralded as a hero after safely landing a disabled jet, but then comes under fire for possibly operating the plane under the influence of alcohol. This clip shows off more of the ridiculously tense plane crash, and it looks to be even more harrowing than the one Zemeckis crafted for Cast Away (which still gives me nightmares). I’m happy to see Zemeckis back in live-action and Washington looks poised to give an unsurprisingly impressive performance, so hopefully Flight delivers the goods.

Hit the jump to watch the 90-second TV spot. The film also stars John Goodman, Don Cheadle, James Badge Dale, Melissa Leo and Bruce Greenwood. Flight opens on November 2nd.

New clips have gone online for two of our most anticipated films of the end of 2012. First up is an extended look at the stunt sequence we saw in the trailer for Sam Mendes' James Bond flick, Skyfall. Daniel Craig does his best train-jumping work here as he transitions from construction vehicle to train carriage in debonair fashion.

Speaking of debon-air (sorry), Denzel Washington is featured in this official TV spot for Robert Zemeckis' Flight. The thirty-second ad, titled "Hero," focuses on the vantage point of Washington's character as a savior when he rescues his passengers by successfully crash-landing a jumbo jet. Skyfall opens stateside November 9th; Flight lands a week earlier on November 2nd. Hit the jump to see both videos.

Check out the first clip from Skyfall below (via Yahoo!), followed by the film's official synopsis:

Here’s the synopsis for Skyfall:
In SKYFALL, Bond’s loyalty to M (JUDI DENCH) is tested as her past returns to haunt her. 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. When Bond’s latest assignment goes gravely wrong and agents around the world are exposed, MI6 is attacked forcing M to relocate the agency. These events cause her authority and position to be challenged by Gareth Mallory (RALPH FIENNES), the new Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee. With MI6 now compromised from both inside and out, M is left with one ally she can trust: Bond. 007 takes to the shadows – aided only by field agent, Eve (NAOMIE HARRIS) – following a trail to the mysterious ...
