NBC Universal Studios President Ron Meyer spoke candidly today on a number of movie-related topics, including franchises, the rising use of 3D and potential sequels for The Lorax and Snow White and the Huntsman. An opening Q&A session at the 2012 Pulse Conference provided the backdrop for this honest review of certain aspects of the movie business. Meyer attempted to clarify his earlier comments that “Hollywood makes shitty movies” by saying: “What I said is we make some good movies and some shitty movies. Nobody ever sets out to make a shitty movie.” He specifically called out his own studio’s Wolfman, Babe 2, Cowboys & Aliens and Land of the Lost. On a more positive note, he also commented on the success of franchises such as Despicable Me and the studio’s ongoing relationship with Hasbro. I think a name like Wayne McClammy destines you to be either a comedy director or a character on Spongebob Squarepants. McClammy chose the former, helming the viral Jimmy Kimmel Live segments “I’m Fucking Matt Damon” and “I’m Fucking Ben Affleck,” a slew of Sarah Silverman Program episodes, and was in talks to make his feature debut with Desperados. Sadly, Universal never reached a deal with McClammy. 24 Frames reports that Betty Thomas (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel) is next in line for the job and sources suggest she will accept the offer.
Desperados is described as a “female Hangover” in which three women travel to Las Vegas “to set right a situation that had one of the women leaving a scathing message for a man she actually likes.” Isla Fisher is attached to star; the studio is currently looking to fill the other two lead roles. The script by Ellen Rapoport (The Jamie Kennedy Experiment) landed on the Black List of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays two years ago.
Thomas has a spotty resume of late, but I like her hire if only because it’s always unfortunate when you have to put a man in charge of a distinctly female comedy from a fresh female voice.

Wayne McClammy, the director of the hilarious Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel shorts “I’m Fucking Matt Damon” and “I’m Fucking Ben Affleck,” is in negotiations with Universal to direct their upcoming comedy Desperados. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Isla Fisher may star in the project, which is currently in development. Mark Gordon and Jason Blum will produce the film written by Ellen Rapaport which is described as a “female version of The Hangover.” The film is about a woman who sends her new boyfriend an angry email when he doesn’t contact her after they have sex, but it turns out he’s in a coma in a hospital in Mexico so she and her friends go to erase the email before he wakes up. Production is set to start by the end of the year.
