DEVIL DVD Review

by     Posted: January 3rd, 2011 at 8:00 am

Poor M. Night Shyamalan. After the one-two-three punch that was The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs, the young auteur, once branded the “next Spielberg” by Time Magazine, has endured a painfully long streak of bad-to-terrible films – namely The Village, Lady in the Water, The Happening and The Last Airbender. With the release of Devil he now must face a hard truth – that his best film in years is the one he did not write or direct.

Those duties belong to John Erick Dowdle, the imaginative brain behind 2008’s contrived, but freakishly thrilling Quarantine. Dowdle swoops in and, with the help of screenwriter Brian Nelson – who penned the delicious vampire fest 30 Days of Night and the equally tasty Hard Candy – molds Shyamalan’s basic premise into a 75-minute thriller that never lets up. The swift running time ensures a slick experience – like an extended Twilight Zone episode, Devil cuts through the BS and arrives at its purpose directly. You don’t have time to laugh at the proceedings – you’re too busy racing the film to its dramatic conclusion.

Top 10 lists are a dime a dozen in the Hollywood circle, but while most writers are busy compiling their “Best of” in terms of films, directors and performances I’m always more curious to explore the less-appreciated categories – particularly Best Motion Picture Score. And so without further ado, here are my picks for the Best Scores of 2010. Hit the jump to see the list.

On Collider, we bring you a lot of posters.  Sure, it’s marketing but that doesn’t mean they can’t be the stuff you want to hang on your walls at home.  With that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of my top 10 posters of 2010.  The only rule is that the posters had to come from a studio.  So if you’re wondering, “Where the hell are all the Mondo posters?!”, that’s why (they also would have taken up the entire list).

Friday Box Office – Ben Affleck’s THE TOWN Has a Big $8.3 Million Debut

by     Posted: September 18th, 2010 at 10:40 am

With a string of recent dramas – both good and bad – underperforming at 2010’s box office, you can color me happily surprised to find Warner Brother’s The Town easily topping Friday’s box office estimates. Ben Affleck’s second feature film as director matched great reviews with a tireless promotion schedule and took in an estimated $8.3 million from its 2,861 locations. Already well above projections, The Town is now on track to make $25 million by Sunday. Meanwhile, the two films that were supposed to battle for number one – Sony’s Easy A and Universal’s Devil – came up a little short despite their demo-skewing PG-13 pedigrees. Easy A brought in an estimated $6.8 million while Devil seems to have inspired only limited devotion at number three with $4.9 million. In hindsight, maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to place producer M Night Shyamalan’s name so prominently in the film’s advertising? Lionsgate’s low budget, animated Alpha & Omega closes out Friday’s top five with $2.3 million. Details and the weekend’s top ten back here tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 The Town $8,380,000 $8.3
2 Easy A $6,800,000 $6.8
3 Devil $4,930,000 $4.9
4 Resident Evil 3D $3,000,000 $36.8
5 Alpha & Omega $2,300,000 $2.3

5 Movie Clips from DEVIL

by     Posted: September 15th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Opening this Friday is Universal’s supernatural thriller Devil.  Produced by M. Night Shyamalan, the film stars Chris Messina, Geoffrey Arend, Logan Marshall-Green, Bojana Novakovic, Jenny O’Hara, Bokeem Woodbine, and Jacob Vargas.

As most of you know, the film is about a group of people trapped in an elevator and it turns out one of them is the devil.  While I’d love for Devil to be a reason to love Shyamalan again…I’m not giving this film any of my money until at least a few people have told me it’s worth seeing.

But since I know some of you are curious about Devil,  Universal has provided us with five clips and you can watch them after the jump.  I’m definitely curious if this film is going to open…

New Clips from DEVIL and LET ME IN; Plus New Images

We have a couple of new clips and images to share with you this afternoon.  The first clip and two new images are from Matt Reeves’ (Cloverfield) Let Me In starring Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass), Kody Smit-McPhee (The Road), and Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins (The Visitor).  While you can debate the necessity of the remake (and trust me, I have), I must say that I have been impressed with what I’ve seen from the film thus far and completely agree with Matt as it is also one of my most-anticipated films for the remainder of 2010.  The second clip is a fourth television spot from Devil, the horror/thriller from producer M. Night Shyamalan.  If you’ve enjoyed what has been shown from the film thus far, you will most likely dig this clip as it maintains the mystery and overall creepiness seen previously.

Hit the jump to check out the clips and images for yourself.  Let Me In will be screening at both the Toronto Film Festival and Fantastic Fest and it hits theaters on October 1stDevil opens on September 17th.

New High-Resolution Images from DEVIL

by     Posted: August 17th, 2010 at 2:20 pm

About a month ago we posted the first trailer, poster and images from Universal’s supernatural thriller Devil. The film is about a few people trapped in an elevator (with one of them being the Devil) and it stars Chris Messina, Geoffrey Arend, Logan Marshall-Green, Bojana Novakovic, Jenny O’Hara, Bokeem Woodbine, Jacob Vargas and it’s from a story by M. Night Shyamalan.  Of course when Universal decided to make Devil, Shyamalan’s name carried more weight.  But after The Last Airbender and Lady in the Water, I think Shyamalan’s name on a project is more of a liability than an asset.

But even though his last few films have been disappointments, I dug the trailer for Devil and think the film has a cool concept that if done right, might be pretty cool.  Also, Shyamalan only produced the film, as it was directed by John Erick Dowdle.  That means it might be good. Anyway, we’ve been given a ton of new images, so hit the jump to check them out.  Devil gets released September 17, 2010.

Awesome Posters for DEVIL and I’M STILL HERE

slice_devil_im_still_here_movie_posters

The posters for Devil and the Joaquin Phoenix documentary I’m Still Here have landed online and they’re both pretty rad.  I particularly like the poster for Devil and it makes me feel bad that the movie will probably get clobbered at the box office because M. Night Shyamalan’s name is attached to it even though he only came up with the story.  The film was written by Brian Nelson and directed by John Erick Dowdle.  Also, the trailer looks really good and I like the premise (five people are stuck in an elevator and one of them is the devil, but you don’t know who).  But if I was at Universal, I would not be putting “From the Mind of M. Night Shyamalan” on any advertising whatsoever.

As for the poster for I’m Still Here, it’s equally effective and does a good job of reminding everyone that Joaquin Phoenix went crazy (or at least it looked like he did).  Directed by Casey Affleck (who is Phoenix’s brother-in-law), the film is being pitched as a mockumentary and reportedly shows Phoenix “snorting cocaine, ordering call girls, having oral sex with a publicist, treating his assistants abusively and rapping badly.”  I’m not sure what’s being mocked, but I guess we’ll find out when the movie plays at this year’s Venice Film Festival.  Hit the jump to check out both posters.

First Trailer, Poster and Images from DEVIL – From a Story by M. Night Shyamalan

The first trailer, poster and images from Universal’s supernatural thriller Devil have been released.  The film stars Chris Messina, Geoffrey Arend, Logan Marshall-Green, Bojana Novakovic, Jenny O’Hara, Bokeem Woodbine, and Jacob Vargas  and it’s from a story by M. Night Shyamalan.  Of course when Universal decided to make the project, Shyamalan’s name meant more than it does now (The Last Airbender).

Saying that, the trailer for Devil makes it seem like a pretty cool thriller about a group of people trapped in an elevator with the Devil.   But I’m not going to be fooled again by anything with M. Night’s name attached to it.  From now on, I’m of the opinion everything he does is crap until he makes a good movie.  If this works, I’ll take him off my shit list.  But if it’s bad….

Universal has announced new release dates for its upcoming films.  The biggest change is moving the Matt Damon/Emily Blunt sci-fi-thriller The Adjustment Bureau from September 17th all the way back to March 4, 2011.  Bureau will now be squaring off against Gore Verbinski’s animated comedy Rango.

Taking Adjustment Bureau‘s September 17th release date will be the M. Night Shyamalan-produced Devil.  The horror-thriller will be going up against the animated family film Alpha and Omega, the romantic comedy Easy A starring Emma Stone, and Ben Affleck’s crime-drama The Town, which is his directorial follow-up to the fantastic Gone Baby Gone.

Hit the jump for release date news on Skyline, Kids in America, The Dark Fields, Sanctum 3D, and Paul.

Chris Messina Will Shout at the DEVIL, M. Night Shyamalan, and the Dowdle Brothers

by     Posted: October 16th, 2009 at 12:40 am

Variety reports that Chris Messina (“Julie and Julia”) will star in the Dowdle Brothers’ (“Quarantine) “Devil” which is based on an M. Night Shyamalan story.  The script is by Brian Nelson (“30 Days of Night”) so Messina has really allied himself with a team of winners.  Details of the plot are being kept under wraps because it’s super secret and everyone wants to know what the movie is about because Shyamalan, Nelson, and the Dowdles are an artistic triumvirate unlike anything cinema has ever known.  Production on “Devil” is set to being in Toronto on October 26th and hopefully no one will ever tell Messina about IMDb and how he might have to carry the entire movie.

M. Night Shyamalan Exorcises DEVIL Out of Pennsylvania and into Toronto’s Tax Incentives

by     Posted: August 25th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

m_night_shyamalan_image_01.jpg

While audiences no longer remain faithful to writer-director M. Night Shyamalan and Shyamalan no longer remains faithful to movies that aren’t laughably bad, the “Happening” director (he no longer gets to be called “Sixth Sense” director) is now no longer faithful to his home of Pennsylvania where he has shot all of his films*.  He’s heading to Toronto and their sweet, sweet tax incentives for his upcoming film, “Devil”.  Hit the jump to find out why he’s making that deal.
