Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for director Zack Snyder‘s Superman film Man of Steel.  There’s a lot to pull apart here in this three-minute trailer, starting with the heroic shots of Russell Crowe who appears to have prescience about his son’s abilities once he gets to Earth.  Then, we see Clark Kent passing through childhood, adolescence and adulthood, all while the expectations of his fathers are heaped upon his broad shoulders.  It’s not all existential as we get the first real hint of action sequences in the film, along with scenes of the menacing Michael Shannon and the tenacious Amy Adams.  And that theme?  There’s quite a bit going on here so be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.  The film stars Henry Cavill, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne and Antje Traue.  Man of Steel opens in 3D on June 14th.

Last week, some intriguing new images from Man of Steel made their way online from the latest issue of EW.  The magazine quickly asked us to remove the images from our site, but today they’ve been officially released for all to see.  We get nice looks at Michael Shannon’s General Zod, Henry Cavill’s Supes, Amy Adams’ Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne’s Perry White, and more, including a new image of Antje Traue as the villainess Faora that wasn’t included in that initial batch.

Hit the jump to take a look at the images, and if you missed General Zod’s warning to Earth (ie. the first viral video for the film), click here.  The pic also stars Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, and Diane LaneMan of Steel opens in 3D on June 14th.

Yesterday, Superman (Henry Cavill) took to the cover of Entertainment Weekly, and now the publication has released seven lo-res images from the superhero’s reboot, Man of Steel.  The article contains new plot details, but I’m trying to stay in the dark on this movie.  Everything I’ve seen so far has pushed me towards doubt (it just looks too dour for Superman), and I want to give the movie a fair shake, so I’ll let the die-hards check out the story.  However, I am willing to look at new images from the movie, and these look alright.  Director Zack Snyder has apparently left his more stylized approach behind to make this Superman movie look relatively normal.  Of course, we’ll have to see it in motion to really get a sense of what he’s going for.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  Hopefully, Warner Bros. will release better-quality versions in the near future.  The film also stars Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, and Russell CroweMan of Steel opens in 3D on June 14th. [Update: EW has asked us to take the images down. Hopefully Warner Bros. released high-resolution versions soon.]

Hit the jump to take a look at the new images, which also feature Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Kevin CostnerMan of Steel opens in 3D on June 14th.

UPDATE: Warner Bros. has asked us to remove the images.

The documentary West of Memphis, from director Amy Berg and producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, tells the story behind the fight to stop the state of Arkansas from killing an innocent man.  While it examines the police investigation into the 1993 murders of three eight-year-old boys in the small town of West Memphis, Arkansas, the film also uncovers new evidence surrounding the arrest and conviction of the three other victims – Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, who became known as the West Memphis 3 – who were imprisoned for 18 years for crimes they did not commit.

At the film’s press day, filmmaker Amy Berg spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about how she came to be a part of this moving and powerful story, the aspects of the case that stuck out the most once she started delving into it, the unique challenges in taking on something that was constantly changing and evolving, going through 800 hours of footage for the editing process, her thoughts on the Alford plea deal that ultimately got the three men out of prison, and what it was like to collaborate with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh.  She also talked about the first narrative feature she’ll be directing in the Spring, called Every Secret Thing, which is a drama about a detective who looks to unravel a mystery surrounding missing children, that stars Diane Lane.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.

New Trailer for Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL Starring Henry Cavill

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill as Superman.  Rather than focusing on the action, the trailer tries to sell us on what would happen if Superman really existed on our planet and would people really accept someone with God like powers.  Of course towards the end of the trailer, we get a good look at some of the big action set pieces and Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Michael Shannon as the villain Zod.  But the fact is, every big budget Hollywood movie has action.  Without a strong story and characters you care about, the action means nothing.  Thankfully, everything I’ve seen thus far on the Man of Steel tells me Snyder has crafted a great Superman film that will deliver everything the fans want and more.  It’s easily one of my most anticipated films of 2013.  Hit the jump to watch the new trailer and then be prepared to start counting down the days to June 14.

Man of Steel also stars Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, and Russell Crowe star.  Man of Steel opens on June 14, 2013.

Elizabeth Banks and Diane Lane to Star in Amy Berg’s EVERY SECRET THING

Elizabeth Banks and Diane Lane are poised to team up for the crime drama Every Secret Thing.  Merced Media Partners, Palmstar, and Hyde Park announced today that they will be financing director Amy Berg’s (Deliver Us From Evil) drama from a script by Nicole Holofcener (Please Give, Friends with Money).  The story centers on Ronnie and Alice, who were convicted for the murder of a baby when they were just 11-years-old and were incarcerated until they turned 18.  While attempting to adjust to live outside juvenile detention, children start to go missing and the police turn their attention once again to Ronnie and Alice.  The mystery surrounding the original murder still looms overhead, and their roles in it take center stage in what sounds like an intriguing character drama.

Filming is set to get underway in February 2013, with Frances McDormand onboard as a producer.  That makes quite the line-up both in front of and behind the camera for this promising crime drama.  Berg most recently directed the Peter Jackson-produced documentary West of Memphis, which documents the wrongful conviction of the West Memphis 3.  Hit the jump to read the full press release for Every Secret Thing.

Warner Bros. has released two teaser trailers for director Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel and they’re awesome.  While both have the same visuals and music, the Yahoo version has Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent) narration and the MSN has Russell Crowe (Jor-El).  Unlike most trailers that reveal everything, I love how this is a true teaser and it’s only towards the end that you realize you’re watching a trailer for a Superman movie.  Also, the way it uses music and visuals to set the mood is perfect.  As I’ve said many times, Man of Steel is easily my most anticipated movie of 2013 and everything I’ve seen and learned tells me it’s going to be something special.

Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, and CroweMan of Steel opens on June 14th, 2013.  Hit the jump to watch the teaser.

Diane Lane Reveals MAN OF STEEL Will Yet Again Show Superman’s Origin

It looks like we’re in for yet another telling of Superman’s backstory. Diane Lane, who plays Martha Kent, tells E! Online that the script for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is being kept under lock and key and she was given only three hours to read it.  Lane says she can’t talk much about it (obviously), but does say Man of Steel “does cover the entire range of years, from infancy on.”  I wish we would just get a quick montage of Superman’s youth, but with casting name-actors like Lane and Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, it looks like we’re in for at least 40 minutes of stuff we already know.

Hit the jump for my thoughts on why it’s time to ditch the origin story for Superman.  Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Michael Shannon, and Amy Adams.  The film is set to open in December 2012.  For all of our Superman coverage, click here.

Diane Lane Will Play Martha Kent in SUPERMAN

Diane Lane has signed on to play Martha Kent in the Zack Snyder-directed Superman movie.  Snyder said in a statement:

“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman.  We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

Henry Cavill (The Tudors) will star as Clark Kent/Superman.  Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are producers on the film.  David S. Goyer is writing the screenplay based on a story by Goyer and Nolan.  The untitled Superman film is scheduled for a December 2012 release.  Hit the jump for more on possible stars/characters.

CHAPLIN 15th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Review

chaplin-movie-slice

Bio-pics are the scourge of modern filmmaking. Most lives don’t fit into an easy narrative, and putting lives into a two to three hour narrative often means compromising the truths of the people involved. Great artists are even more difficult as many are total shits, and often terrible human beings. For Sir Richard Attenborough’s biography of Charlie Chaplin – titled Chaplin – the rough edges are unavoidable, but the filmmakers attempt to sand them down. Chaplin (as played by Robert Downey Jr.) is a pedophile and a terrible father, and the film makes excuses for him. Perhaps audiences don’t want to see that artists they love are sometimes terrible human beings. It may ruin the illusion of great art, but it does no favors to the truth. Attenborough wants to print the legend, and that’s entertaining enough if you accept the format and the inherent dishonesty – which the narrative  hope to at least game a little by suggesting that the narrator is dishonest. With an all star cast (including Kevin Kline, Dan Aykroyd, Milla Jovovich, Diane Lane, Nancy Travis, Anthony Hopkins, Moira Kelly, Marisa Tomei, and more) it’s at least diverting. My review of the Blu-ray of Chaplin follows after the jump.

Teaser Trailer for CINEMA VERITE Starring Tim Robbins, Diane Lane, and James Gandolfini

HBO has dominated the TV movie for ages.  The network has won the last 7 Emmys for Outstanding Made for TV Movie, not to mention 16 of the last 19.  But it’s not the sexiest format, so HBO’s efforts do a much better job at boosting the Emmy total than my actual interest in the network, no matter how solid Temple Grandin was.

Yet something about Cinema Verite stands out.  The cast is teriffic, featuring Diane Lane, Tim Robbins, James Gandolfini, Patrick Fugit — but that’s not it.  HBO telepics always have great casts.  I’m drawn in by the story, a look behind the scenes of the 1973 documentary An American Family, which chronicled the lives of the Loud family and effectively birthed the reality TV genre.  The first teaser trailer, which makes excellent use of “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas & the Papas, does not disappoint.  Watch it after the jump.

Based on the remarkable true story, Secretariat chronicles the spectacular journey of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. With the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich), Penny managed to navigate the male-dominated business and succeed against all odds with what may be the greatest racehorse of all time.

In a press conference at the film’s press day, held at the Santa Anita Racetrack in Arcadia, Calif., co-stars Diane Lane and John Malkovich, along with director Randall Wallace, talked about bringing this incredible story to life and engaging the audience in a way that will have them cheering. Shari Springer Berman Interview – THE EXTRA MAN Director On CINEMA VERITE, “Lovable A**holes” and AMERICAN SPLENDOR’s Late Hero

by     Posted: August 17th, 2010 at 11:00 am

Documentaries have undoubtedly grown closer in style to narrative features over the past 20 years.  Similarly, when documentarians Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini moved into the narrative world, they brought their old techniques with them.  That first feature, American Splendor, made a big splash, thanks to its fresh and complicated approach that broke standard filmmaking conventions and included material from mediums that varied from comic books and film to television.

Springer Berman filled us in recently on her latest film, The Extra Man, which continues its gradual, national release today in top 10 markets, with Chicago.  Hit the jump for the interview’s audio and transcript, along with info on her new HBO film Cinema Verite featuring Diane Lane, Tim Robbins, Thomas Dekker and James Gandolfini, where she stands on a big divide in the documentary world and a story she’s never told publicly about American Splendor’s late subject, Harvey Pekar.
