Steven Moffat Talks DOCTOR WHO: LAST CHRISTMAS, Casting Nick Frost as Santa Claus, His Fondness for Writing Christmas Specials, and More

by     Posted 5 days ago

Airing both in the US and UK on Christmas Day, in Doctor Who: Last Christmas, it’s Christmas in the North Pole and the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) are joined by Santa Claus (Nick Frost) and some grumpy elves for an all-new adventure.  It is the tenth Christmas special since the show’s revival in 2005, and the first full Christmas special to feature the Twelfth Doctor.

During this interview with press to promote the upcoming special, showrunner Steven Moffat talked about why Doctor Who and Christmas have a special relationship, the challenges of plotting and planning a Christmas special, why it took so long to use Santa Claus as a plot point, how Nick Frost came to be cast in the role, the Doctor’s view on Santa Claus versus Robin Hood, getting more clarity on where the relationship between the Doctor and Clara stands now, why companions typically end up being contemporary characters, his fondest memories of writing his five Christmas specials, and the best Doctor Who merchandise he’s received.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

New DOCTOR WHO Series 8 Trailer Features Peter Capaldi and a T-Rex on Fire

by     Posted 130 days ago

Doctor Who is due to return on August 23rd, so I guess I better get ready to hear about how crazy I am for not watching the show all over again.  BBC dropped that first full-length series 8 trailer just about a month ago, but with the premiere date fast approaching, they just threw in another 30-second spot for the first episode, “Deep Breath,” as well.

Minus the fact that Peter Capaldi (In the Loop) is our new Doctor, I’ve got just about no clue what’s going on in this teaser, so I won’t dare try to describe it, but it’s got a dinosaur, a guy who’s missing about a quarter of his face and shots of the Tardis – I know the Tardis!  Hit the jump to check out the new Doctor Who series 8 trailer for yourself.  The show returns in the UK and the US on Saturday, August 23rd.

Peter Jackson Could Work DOCTOR WHO Episode into His Schedule after THE HOBBIT Trilogy

by     Posted 149 days ago

While Peter Jackson has a bit more to do this year to finish up his Hobbit trilogy with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, he might be taking a trip to the small screen in the near future.  Which TV show, you ask? Well, Jackson has expressed an interest in directing an episode of Doctor Who.  Jackson would have done the show already if it weren’t for his insane schedule over the last few years.  Perhaps things would go a little easier if the Good Doctor took a trip to New Zealand where Jackson spends much of his time.  I jest, but according to Steven Moffat, that’s not exactly out of the question.  Hit the jump for more.

Full-Length DOCTOR WHO Series 8 Trailer Reveals Peter Capaldi as the Regenerated Time Lord

by     Posted 160 days ago

The BBC has unveiled the first Doctor Who series 8 trailer for the upcoming season, featuring actor Peter Capaldi (In the Loop) as the newly regenerated Doctor.  I’ve never seen an episode of the show in my life, but the fans seem to be quite passionate and no doubt this full-length trailer for the rebooted season will be rather exciting.  We get a tease of Capaldi’s iteration of the lead character, as well as flashes of some of the sci-fi creatures and situations that the Time Lord and his companion Clara (Jenna Coleman) will face—including dinosaurs!  The first two episodes of this new season were directed by Kill List and Sightseers helmer Ben Wheatley.  Capaldi, of course, takes over the role from actor Matt Smith, while Steven Moffat continues to exude his superhuman abilities as the showrunner of both Doctor Who and Sherlock.

Benedict Cumberbatch Rules Himself out of STAR WARS: EPISODE VII and DOCTOR WHO

by     Posted 251 days ago

According to Benedict Cumberbatch Star Wars and Doctor Who are two franchises he won’t be a part of in the near future.  For Star Wars: Episode VII, fronted by his Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams, it wasn’t for lack of trying on Cumberbatch’s part.  It appears as though he would have liked a part in in the highly anticipated film, but, alas, he will not appear on the casting sheet.  Cumberbatch was rumored to have a role in the film quite a few months ago, but we’ve yet to hear any official word (ie, from the studio itself) one way or the other.  As for Doctor Who, it certainly sounds as if Cumberbatch has a zero level of interest in ever joining the franchise.  Honest truths or studio spin?  You make the call after the jump.

Toy Fair: Over 250 Pictures From Convention Floor Including FROZEN, BREAKING BAD, DOCTOR WHO, SONS OF ANARCHY, ANCHORMAN 2, and More

by     Posted 306 days ago

As someone with a major soft spot for Funko products, their booth at Toy Fair 2014 was a standout.  The company came with dozens of brand new items including The Walking Dead and Guardians of the Galaxy bobble heads, and POP! collections for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ghostbusters, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and more.

Mattel showed off new Hot Wheels and Frozen products while Mezco Toyz previewed brand new pieces for Sons of Anarchy and Breaking Bad including a variety of six-inch Walter Whites (Bryan Cranston), a replication of the infamous pink teddy bear, and Jax (Charlie Hunnam) and Clay (Ron Perlman) figurines. Underground Toys had a huge assortment of Doctor Who products while Cryptozoic Entertainment put some of their new trading card series on display.  We even caught the Khaleesi trying to sell some dragon eggs (or rather, paperweights) on the convention center floor.  We also got a look at toy lines for Anchorman 2, Axe Cop, Daft Punk, and so much more.  We snapped over 250 photos while walking around, so you can see Toy Fair for yourself after the jump.

Director Ben Wheatley Talks A FIELD IN ENGLAND, His Film Influences, Working on DOCTOR WHO, HIGH RISE, and More

by     Posted 320 days ago

Ben Wheatley’s filmography defies easy categorization.  With just four films under his belt, Wheatley has directed a dysfunctional family mobster melodrama (Down Terrace), a hitman cult horror tragedy (Kill List) and a romantic serial-killer comedy (Sightseers).  His latest, A Field In England (released last year in the UK, Friday here in the US), is perhaps his oddest amalgamation yet: a psychedelic supernatural wartime period piece, harkening back to the experimental genre pictures of English provocateur Ken Russell.  In a (well…) field in England, four war deserters are taken captive by an alchemist and forced to search for a buried treasure.  As the characters descend into petty grievance and madness, the film itself begins to mirror their mental state, the reality of what’s on screen coming into question.  It’s another strong heady entry from Wheatley, who has rightly been heralded as one of the best new English filmmakers today.

In the following interview with Wheatley, he discusses the resurgence of artsploitation films, Ken Russell’s The Devils and accolades from Martin Scorsese & Nicolas Roeg. In addition Wheatley, currently shooting the first two episodes of the upcoming Doctor Who season, gives updates on his next motion picture High Rise and his (supposed) American film debut Freakshift.  For the full interview, hit the jump.  A Field in England opens in the U.S. on February 7th.

DOCTOR WHO Alert! First Look at Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Time Lord

by     Posted 327 days ago

In Peter Capaldi’s own words, his version of the title character of BBC’s Doctor Who is “100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.”  This newly released image shows off the Twelfth Time Lord’s new look, which is a great  teaser for fans with only a casual interest in the series, as well as those planning to get their cosplay costumes as authentic as possible for the upcoming convention year.  The first episode of the eighth series of Doctor Who began earlier this month, just after the successful premiere of the series’ Christmas special, in which Capaldi first appeared.

Production has officially begun on the eighth series of Doctor Who, complete with an entirely new Doctor.  Peter Capaldi steps into the titular role recently vacated by Matt Smith, and BBC has released the first image of Capaldi in full costume alongside co-star Jenna Coleman.  The first episode of series eight was written by showrunner Steven Moffat, while the second was penned by Phil Ford; both are being directed by Kill List and Sightseers helmer Ben Wheatley.  Speaking about his first day of filming, Capaldi said, “New job, first day, slightly nervous.  Just like the Doctor, I’m emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world.”

Celebrate 50 Years of DOCTOR WHO with this Video Game Easter Egg Hunt

by     Posted 1 year, 21 days ago

Doctor Who is well known for traveling across space and time, but how about appearing across different media?  We just celebrated Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary with a simulcast special last weekend.  Now, some intrepid gamers have scoured some 30 years worth of video games to tease out Doctor Who Easter eggs that range from the obvious to the obscure.  The only thing more foreign to me than this collection of video games is the history and mythology of the good doctor himself, but fans of the long-running show should enjoy the trip down memory lane regardless.  Hit the jump to check it out.

Watch Teasers for SHERLOCK Season 3, DOCTOR WHO Christmas Special, and ORPHAN BLACK Season 2

by     Posted 1 year, 27 days ago

The Doctor Who 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor was simulcast in over 200 countries today, creating a nice opportunity to air teasers for other fine British productions.  Naturally, there was a 10-second promo for the Doctor Who Christmas special which promised “Silence Will Fall” and a visit to the planet Trenzalore.  There were also slightly longer 30-second promos for Sherlock season 3 and Orphan Black season 2. Given where the previous season left off, the Sherlock clip opens on a tombstone that reads “Sherlock Holmes” before reassuring fans with the hashtag #sherlocklives.  The Orphan Black clip reveals the April 19, 2014 premiere date, then retreats as a distraught Tatiana Maslany stalks toward the camera.

Sherlock returns to PBS January 19.  Peter Capaldi will be fully revealed as the new Doctor on December 25.  Watch the teasers after the jump.
