35 Things to Know about THE EXPENDABLES 3 from Our Set Visit

the-expendables-3-set-visit-Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone, Randy Couture, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Dolph Lundgren and Jason Statham are walking through an abandoned building.  The hallways are torn apart.  Debris is everywhere.  The building looks like it’s in the middle of a war zone.  As the Expendables, clad in black clothing and carrying massive automatic weapons, take in their surroundings, they slowly make their way down a long hallway and carefully try to see what’s ahead.  As they reach a closed door they stop.  Stallone motions with his head to open the door and in an instant Couture kicks it open and they all rush in.

Last September, when director Patrick Hughes was filming The Expendables 3 in Sofia, Bulgaria, I was invited to visit the set with a few other reporters.  As a fan of The Expendables movies and especially the cast, I was excited to see them in action, and what I saw and learned on set made me think the third installment is going to be the best of the bunch.  Hit the jump for more.

Watch a Roll Call for THE EXPENDABLES 3 Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a Bunch of Other Tough Guys

the-expendables-3-trailer

Lionsgate has released a roll call/teaser trailer for The Expendables 3.  While this footage bills this outing as the “last” time, I have trouble believing that.  But that’s a concern for the future.  Right now, this teaser provides the first footage from the movie (explosions!), and mostly provides a roll call of the many, many tough guys (and gal) populating the movie.  But that’s fine since The Expendables movies are more about a stacked cast than anything else.

Hit the jump to check out the The Expendables 3 teaser trailer, and click here to see some of the character posters/glamour shots.  The film stars (deep breath) Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kelsey Grammer, Antonio Banderas, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, and Glen PowellThe Expendables 3 opens August 15th.

First Teaser Trailer for THE EXPENDABLES 3

Lionsgate has released a teaser trailer for director Patrick Hughes’ action sequel The Expendables 3.  The follow-up finds Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross and his Expendables crew squaring off against Ross’ old partner Conrad Stonebanks, played by Mel Gibson.  There’s no hint of that story in this first teaser trailer as the cast is simply too large to give everyone screentime in the time allotted.  Taking that into account, everyone and their mother is wheeled out to strike an action pose in what’s essentially a cast introduction.

Hit the jump to watch the teaser trailer.  The film also stars Wesley Snipes, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kelsey Grammer, Antonio Banderas, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, and Glen PowellThe Expendables 3 opens on August 15, 2014.

With director Patrick Hughes’ The Expendables 3 due August 15, 2014, I’d imagine we’re getting close to seeing the first trailer/footage from the film.  As most of you know, the next installment has Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross and his Expendables crew squaring off against Ross’ old partner Conrad Stonebanks, played by Mel Gibson.  Returning for the sequel are Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger, with Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, and Harrison Ford joining the all-star cast along with Kellan Lutz, MMA star Ronda Rousey, welterweight boxing champion Victor Ortiz and Glen Powell.  No matter what you think of The Expendables franchise, you have to admit it’s a hell of a cast, and one I can’t wait to see kicking ass next summer.

So while we wait for the first footage to hit, we were sent a promo poster which you can check out after the jump.  It’s got the tag line, “Never send a boy to do a man’s job.”

THE EXPENDABLES 3 Begins Filming; Synopsis Released; Cage, Chan, Rourke, and Jovovich Absent from Cast List

by     Posted 248 days ago

expendables-sylvester-stallone-slice

Lionsgate and Millennium Films have announced that principal photography on The Expendables 3 has begun in Bulgaria and at Nu Boyana Studios in Sofia.  The upcoming film pits Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his team against his old partner Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson).  Stonebanks is out for revenge, and so Barney must round-up a gang of younger team members to join the Expendables.  This is an odd synopsis considering that the high-profile new names are veterans Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, and Harrison Ford.  The younger additions consist of Kellan Lutz, Glen Powell, MMA fighter Ronda Rousey, and boxing champion Victor Ortiz.  The most notable aspect of the press release is the omissions.  Deadline had previously reported that Nicolas Cage, Jackie Chan, and Milla Jovovich were on board, but they’re not mentioned in this press release.  Additionally, Stallone had said that Mickey Rourke would return, but he’s also absent.  Perhaps their roles were…dispensable.

Hit the jump for the press release.  The Expendables 3 is due out August 15, 2014.

Dolph Lundgren Talks UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING

Okay. So, I know what you’re thinking, ‘Universal Solider: Day of Reckoning? Why the hell should I care about the fifth entry in a series I haven’t thought about in twenty years, if ever?’ The answer is simple; the movie is damn good and incredibly ambitious. John Hyams’ second foray into the franchise after Universal Solider: Regeneration – possibly the best direct-to-video film of all time – is a mindbending and incredibly violent epic that owes more to Apocalypse Now and Mulholland Drive than it does to the works of Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin. It is a film that demands to be seen by any serious fan of edgy action, especially those who haven’t seen any of the others.

Recently, I sat down with Dolph Lundgren to discuss his work on the film, which also stars Jean-Claude Van Damme and Scott Adkins. During the interview we chatted about the horrors of being a Uni-Sol, The Punisher (1989), what his character was trying to tell Van Damme at the end of Regeneration, getting his doctorate in mechanical engineering and much more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Fans of the original action hero mash-up The Expendables are in for higher stakes, twice the explosions and more grizzled cast members in The Expendables 2, now available on Blu-ray. While the sequel managed to top the experience of the first film, the Blu-ray has plenty of extras to keep fans busy, including a commentary track by director Simon West (Con Air) that provides a lot of behind-the-scenes info. Want to know what weapons the Expendables used? Want to know how much bigger the sequel could have been? Want to see the real life Expendables the movie characters referenced? Well then hit the jump for my review of The Expendables 2 on Blu-ray.

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE 25th Anniversary Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 1 year, 181 days ago

By the mid-80s a He-Man movie was inevitable. Boys at this time were living for the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon and drowning in Mattel’s action figures (myself included). He-Man and the rest of the Eternia posse were in parades, a live show called the “Power Tour”, and every other facet of merchandising you can imagine. After much anticipation, Cannon Film’s Masters of the Universe came out in summer of ’87. Critics laughed it off and children were left a little confused. It’s looked back on by many as a fun and campy film that managed to thrill young fans despite its deviations from the cartoon. It’s the 25th anniversary of the film so Warner Bros. released it on Blu-ray. Hit the jump for my review.

UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING Red-Band Trailer

A new red-band trailer has gone online for writer/director John Hyams’ Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoningstarring Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van DammeScott Adkins and Andrei Arlovski. This trailer leans heavily on the psychological mind-fuckery that comes with being turned into a universal soldier, but it’s equally focused on the action as well.  The only downside is the intermittent blasts of seizure-inducing strobes that flicker over cast intros or quotes from movie sites.  If you can get through that without experiencing an epileptic event, then you’ll be sure to enjoy the brutality of this red-band trailer.  Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning is available On Demand starting October 25th with a theatrical release on November 30th.  Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.

TOP 5: THE EXPENDABLES 2, PARANORMAN, THE LAST STAND, David Cronenberg Doesn’t Like Superhero Movies, BULLET TO THE HEAD

by     Posted 1 year, 248 days ago

collider-top-5-slice

This weekend’s release of ParaNorman will afford me the rare opportunity to share an afternoon in the theater with two of my nephews, ages 8 and 10. Granted, they’re a little disappointed that we’re not checking it out in 3D, but I just can’t bring myself to foster any sort of affinity for the technology in their young and impressionable minds. The last movie we watched in theaters together was 2009′s Up and it was an experience that I’ll never forget as its brilliant opening sequence brought tears to both of their eyes at the ripe ages of 5 and 7. It was a glowing example of the cinema’s ability to touch young and old alike and while ParaNorman will likely be unable to touch that moment, I’m looking forward to it a ton nonetheless.

My weekend plans aside, in a three-fifths ode to our action heroes of yesteryear, this week’s Top 5 includes video interviews with the cast of The Expendables 2, video interviews with the cast and directors of ParaNorman, the first poster and trailer for Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s The Last Stand, David Cronenberg vs. the superhero genre, and the first trailer for Sly Stallone and director Walter Hill‘s revenge tale, Bullet to the Head. As always, a brief recap and link to each greets you after the jump.

Dolph Lundgren Talks THE EXPENDABLES 2, and Who He’d Like to See in THE EXPENDABLES 3

Simon West‘s The Expendables 2 opens this weekend, and the film has Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his gang of mercenaries out for revenge while also having to deal with a baddie (Jean-Claude Van Damme) who wants some weapons-grade plutonium.  I was very disappointed with the first film, but the sequel is a blast.  I think one of the big problems with the original was the lack of a great antagonist.  But by bringing in Van Damme (who is one of the best parts of the sequel), the fight scenes are a lot more fun.  The Expendables 2 also stars Jason Statham, Yu Nan, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

At the recent Los Angeles press day I got to speak with Dolph Lundgren.  We talked about his reaction to the first film and the sequel, how he prepared for the second film, filming in Bulgaria, the big action scenes, and who would he like to see in The Expendables 3.  Hit the jump to watch.
