COLD IN JULY Review

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.  Cold in July opens today in limited release.]

Genre is a lifeline. We cling to it in order to guide our expectations of a film, and while genres can be blended, we expect them to remain consistent. But just because a clearly stated genre is conventional, that doesn’t mean it’s unshakable. Jim Mickle’s Cold in July pulls its audience into one tone, and then explodes it over halfway through the picture only to blow it up yet again. It can be categorized as a “crime” film, but that doesn’t really do it justice as Mickle constantly shakes up the tone to where the picture can be jarring and schizophrenic. But this approach also makes Cold in July thrillingly unpredictable.

THE OTHER WOMAN Review

There are some actors and actresses who cause you to wonder why they aren’t bigger stars.  You wonder why you have to point out that person’s previous films and characters when your friends and family ask, “What would I know them from?”  These performers are too talented and too under-appreciated, and you know they’re the best when they turn middling material into a movie worth watching.  Leslie Mann is such an actress, and she single-handedly saves The Other Woman.  A mostly forgettable picture becomes memorable thanks to her cute, goofy, incredibly endearing performance that manages to elevate a not only a stagnant script but also one-dimensional characters.

Trailer and Poster for COLD IN JULY Starring Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard, and Don Johnson

IFC Films has released the Cold in July trailer and poster.  The film stars Michael C. Hall as an mild-mannered family man who kills a home intruder, but events take a bizarre twist when the intruder’s father (Sam Shepard) begins stalking around, and an even larger conspiracy is around the corner.  I saw the film at Sundance, and even though the tone is erratic, it’s also electrifying.  This trailer provides a good sense of the movie without giving too much away, or at least not so much that you can piece together the entire story.  This is an indie flick you should definitely keep on your radar.

Robert Rodriguez‘s new television network El Rey has released the first trailer for its flagship series From Dusk Till Dawn: The SeriesD.J. Cotrona and Zane Holtz star as the Gecko brothers (subbing in for George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino in the 1996 movie), fighting the undead as they run from the law.  The production values fail to impress—the painful attempts at stylish cool don’t help—but hopefully it plays better in the context of the hourlong series than it does a two-and-a-half minute trailer.

Rodriguez directed the first two episodes of the ten-episode season.  Jesse Garcia, Don Johnson, Wilmer Valderrama, and Robert Patrick co-star.  From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series premieres March 11 on El Rey.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

A batch of funstuffs from writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Django Unchained has landed online.  Don Johnson appeared on The Tonight Show last night, where he debuted the first clip from Tarantino’s highly anticipated (that’s an understatement) Western.  The clip is downright great, as we see Jamie Foxx’s Django and Christoph Waltz’s Colonel Shultz riding up to an estate owned by a very Colonel Sanders-esque Johnson.  December 25th simply cannot get here soon enough.

Hit the jump to check out the clip, as well as a new TV spot and a couple of new images.  The film also stars Kerry Washington, Leonard DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, M.C. Gainey, Walton Goggins, Garrett Dillahunt, Dennis Christopher, Gerald McRaney, Laura Cayouette, and Tom SaviniDjango Unchained opens on Christmas Day.

New Trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED

A new trailer for writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s new film Django Unchained has been released.  This new Django trailer is way more fun than a movie about slavery has any right to be.  We get to see a lot more of Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) and her treatment at the hands of Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).  We get some sage advice from Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Stephen, and a bit of historical postulating from DiCaprio himself. Why, we even get our first look at funnyman Jonah Hill in a somewhat surprising role!

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  Adult supervision is required. The film also stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, M.C. Gainey, Walton Goggins, Garrett Dillahunt, Dennis Christopher, Gerald McRaney, Laura Cayouette, Don Johnson, and Tom SaviniDjango Unchained opens on December 25th.

Comic-Con: Quentin Tarantino and Cast Show Off 8-Minute Sizzle Reel at DJANGO UNCHAINED Panel

Quentin Tarantino and Hall H are made for each other.  It’s a feedback loop of pure enthusiasm.  The trailer for his latest film, Django Unchained, was met with lots of love, and all of his fans have been chomping at the bit for more.  Tarantino doesn’t hand out spoilers, but he’s not disturbingly protective to the point where he’s scared to show a single frame of his movie.  He’s a guy who’s always proud of his work, and he wants to share his excitement.  At Saturday’s opening Hall H panel, I couldn’t have been more excited to see Tarantino share his latest pride and joy.

The moderator opened by bringing out cast members Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Kerry Washington, Walton Goggins, and Don Johnson.  And then the man himself: Quentin Tarantino.  Hit the jump to check out the recap.

DJANGO UNCHAINED TV Spot Shows More Footage of Samuel L. Jackson

Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained is quickly shaping up to be my most anticipated Christmas present of 2012.  While this new, one-minute TV spot shares a good amount of footage with the previous trailers released, it does feature a new quip from star, Samuel L. JacksonLeonardo DiCaprio looks delightfully deranged, Jamie Foxx is cool as ice as the title character and Christoph Waltz is the most charismatic bounty hunter since Bruce Campbell’s Brisco County Jr. And that blood spray on the cotton plant may be my favorite Tarantino shot of all time!  Also starring Kerry Washington, Jonah Hill, Don Johnson and James Remar, Django Unchained opens December 25th.  Hit the jump to check out the first TV spot for Django Unchained.
