Magnet Releasing has announced a slew of directors that will be contributing to the horror anthology sequel ABCs of Death 2, and it’s a fairly diverse lineup.  Like its predecessor, the pic will deliver 26 genre-oriented short films each relating to a different letter of the alphabet.  The producers are branching out of the horror genre for this new host of filmmakers, as Álex de la Iglesia (The Last Circus), Rodney Ascher (Room 237), and animation director Bill Plympton will be helming segments alongside Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper (Vanishing Waves), Sion Sono (Cold Fish), Vincenzo Natali (Splice), Marcus Dunstan (The Collection), and many more.

Additional filmmakers are expected to be announced over the next few months, as production will get underway for a planned 2014 release.  The follow-up is described as “a wilder, leaner, faster paced and even more entertaining anthology” than the first film, so hold on to your butts, folks.  Hit the jump to read the press release, which includes the full list of directors announced thus far.

Exclusive New Clip from THE AMBASSADOR

by     Posted: August 31st, 2012 at 8:39 am

We here at Collider are happy to debut a new clip from the documentary The Ambassador.  The darkly comic doc blurs the line between straight documentary and “mockumentary”, as director Mads Brügger has developed a new style of documentary filmmaking that he calls performative journalism.  The film exposes the corrupt business of selling diplomatic titles to exploit the lucrative and limited resources of war torn, third world nations, but it does so by creating a caricature of a corrupt diplomat and throwing him into real situations with hidden cameras.  This clip provides a glimpse at how Brügger pulls this off as we see a “diplomat” stumble through a speech at a public event in the Central African Republic.

Hit the jump to watch the clip.  The Ambassador is currently available VOD and is playing in select theaters.

KLOWN Review and Alamo Drafthouse Canoe Trip Recap

by     Posted: July 25th, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Earlier this month, I got a phone call from the fine folks at the Alamo Drafthouse.  They wanted to know if I’d be interested in spending some time with the guys from Klovn (or Klown, to our English-speaking friends), a filthy Danish comedy I’d seen—and passionately loved—back when it premiered during last year’s Fantastic Fest.  This little meetup would include a canoe trip up the Guadalupe River with the film’s stars, with Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen, an outdoor screening of the film, and a whole lotta beer.  It seemed that Drafthouse Films had picked the film up for U.S. distribution, and they were looking to get the word out about the film.  Did I want to go?

Lemme tell ya, folks:  if the Alamo Drafthouse ever calls and asks if you wanna go up the Guadalupe River on a canoe trip that ends with a booze-soaked screening of their movie on the banks of the river (via the Rolling Roadshow’s giant, inflatable screen), you say “Yes”.  Read my report from this awesome weekend (and a review of Klown!) after the jump.

Drafthouse Films Picks up US Rights to ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: THE WILD, UNTOLD STORY OF CANNON FILMS

by     Posted: December 1st, 2011 at 8:18 am

I like that director Mark Hartley is out there making movies.  His previous films, Not Quite Hollywood and Machete Maidens Unleashed, went inside the sub-culture of cheap and dirty filmmaking that still provided entertaining genre fare.  However, his new film, Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films, finally brings him closer to Hollywood.  The movie explores the studio created by Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus.  Their films were still quick, dirty, exploitative fare, but among their 120+ movies they released between 1979 – 1989 they cranked out Bloodsport, Breakin’, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, American Ninja (and all four sequels), Over the Top, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.  That’s just a slice of the trashy treasures they brought to the world.

Drafthouse Films, the distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse, is planning “a theatrical release is being planned for late 2012 to coincide with a traveling roadshow retrospective of Cannon’s seminal films.”  Dear Drafthouse, please swing by Atlanta.  Hit the jump for the full press release.

Drafthouse Films to Release Real-D Restored Version of COMIN’ AT YA! 3D

Drafthouse Films, the distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse theaters, has picked up the North American rights to a 3D restoration of the 1981 spaghetti western Comin’ at Ya! 3D. The restored version, which premiered at Fantastic Fest 2011, is in “3D film in high-definition, utilizing contemporary state-of-art Real-D.”  Comin’ at Ya! was the highest grossing independent 3D film of the 1980s and is credited with creating a resurgence in the format during the decade, a fad which then faded until it was resurrected thirty years later.

While I’m no cheerleader for 3D, it would be interesting to see what a restored 3D movie looks like as opposed to a 2D-to-3D film like The Lion King.  Drafthouse Films is planning a limited theatrical re-release for 2012.  Hit the jump for the full press release.

Drafthouse Films Looks to Release THE FP in Early 2012; Plus New Images from the Film

Back in March, we brought you the NSFW trailer for directors Brandon and Jason Trost’s The FP. At that time, Matt mentioned that the film had received a positive reception from its SXSW screening and hoped that the film would land a distributor sooner rather than later so that us non-SXSW attending folk could partake in it as well. Today, he got his wish as Drafthouse films (of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema) has acquired U.S. distribution rights for The FP and is planning a limited theatrical release for the first quarter of 2012. For those unaware, The FP is set in a near post-apocalyptic future and focuses on two rival gangs who duke out a turf war by way of Dance Dance Revolution‘s more violent cousin, Beat-Beat Revelation.

Jason Blum and Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity) produced the film which looks to fit well into its self-ascribed role as a “nod to 80s sci-fi/action genre fare.” Co-director Jason Trost stars in the film (and wears an eye-patch which is always a nice touch for any protagonist if you ask me) while Brandon Trost’s previous credits include cinematography work on Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and Crank: High Voltage. For a little more on The FP, hit the jump for the full press release and to check out some new images from the pic.

Jason Eisener, Nacho Vigalondo, Ti West, and Many More Team for Horror Anthology THE ABCS OF DEATH

alphabet-blocks

Drafthouse Films is teaming with Timpson Films, Magnet Releasing, and 26 filmmakers to produce the horror anthology The ABCs of Death.  Each director will be assigned one letter of the alphabet to turn into a short film.  Some of the more notable talent involved Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun), Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes), Ti West (The House of the Devil), and Srdjan Sapsojevic (A Serbian Film).  The remaining confirmed are Angela Bettis, Ben Wheatley, Banjong Pisanthanakun, Adrian Garcia Bogliano, Ernesto Diaz Espinoza, Bruno Forzani and Héléne Cattet, Gadi Harel, Thomas Malling, Yoshihiro Nishimura, Simon Rumley, Tak Sakaguchi and Yuji Shimomura, Marcel Sarmiento, Timo Tjahjanto, Andrew Traucki, Jake West and Adam Wingard.  The plan is to fill one slot with the winner of a worldwide contest, reminiscent of how Eisener got his start as an amateur filmmaker who landed Hobo With a Shotgun in the fake trailers section of Grindhouse.

Production is scheduled for this June.  The plan is to complete filming exactly 6 months, 6 weeks, and 6 days later in January 2012.  Read quotes from the producers after the jump.

Drafthouse Films have released the trailer for the upcoming US release of Chris Morris’ comedy Four Lions.  The film has already been a critical success in the UK and on the festival circuit.  Drafthouse Films, which is the new distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse, has chosen the flick as their first release and it looks like they have chosen wisely.  The story of a group of wannabe terrorists may not immediately seem like comedy gold, but this is a solid trailer that should get you interested in the movie.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Four Lions opens in limited release on November 5th.
