Sam Worthington Talks DRIFT, Surfing in the Movie, and the Most Challenging Sequences to Film

by     Posted 1 year, 144 days ago

drift

The surf drama Drift tells the story of the Kelly brothers (played by Myles Pollard and Xavier Samuel), who spent their youth, in the 1970′s, searching for the perfect wave.  In order to save their home and family, they launched a backyard surf business, crafting homemade wetsuits and custom made boards that become a global brand.

At the film’s press day, actor Sam Worthington (who plays hippy drifter and surf photographer JB) spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about the good and bad about working with friends, researching what it’s like to be a surf photographer, taking inspiration for the character from his uncle, known as Rainbow, what it’s like to surf for a movie, the most challenging sequences to shoot, and his first time surfing at the age of seven.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

New Trailer for Australian Surf Drama DRIFT Starring Xavier Samuel, Myles Pollard, and Sam Worthington

drift

Lionsgate has released the domestic trailer for Drift, the Australian surf drama directed by Ben Nott and Morgan O’Neill.  Set in 1970s Austrailia, Drift centers on two brothers (Xavier Samuel and Myles Pollard) who launch a surf gear business, selling merchandise out of the back of their van.  Sam Worthington co-stars as a surf photographer and filmmaker.  The trailer suggests the film quickly transitions from the easygoing surfer vibe to an intense thriller.  If that fails, it looks like Nott and O’Neill captured some solid surfing footage.

Robyn Malcolm, Lesley- Ann Brandt, Aaron Glenane, Steve Bastoni, and Maurie Ogden co-star.  Drift opens August 2.  Watch the trailer after the break.

Sam Worthington Talks AVATAR Sequels, Working with Schwarzenegger on TEN, How He Doesn’t Think There Will be a Third CLASH OF THE TITANS, and More

by     Posted 1 year, 205 days ago

Before going off to Romania to shoot his next film, The Keeping Room, about a Civil War soldier who has broken off from the Union Army encounters a group of women who have been left to fend for themselves, Collider got the opportunity to chat with actor Sam Worthington about the surf drama Drift, which is available on demand July 2nd and in theaters everywhere August 2nd.

While we will post what he had to say about that film in June, we did want to share what he had to say about some of his other upcoming projects.  During the interview, he talked about how different his character in The Keeping Room is, how working with director David Ayer on the action thriller Ten was the best experience, what it was like to work with someone as iconic as Arnold Schwarzenegger, that James Cameron will start shooting the Avatar sequels whenever he’s ready, and how he doesn’t think there will be a third Clash of the Titans films.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Australian Trailer for Surfing Drama DRIFT Starring Sam Worthington

drift

The first trailer has been released for the surfing-crime-drama Drift.  The Australian-set film takes place in the 1970s and centers on two brothers (played by Xavier Samuel and Myles Pollard) who start building a business selling surfboards and wetsuits, but then get mixed up with a local drug dealer.  Sam Worthington co-stars as a travelling bohemian surf photographer and filmmaker who becomes involved in the brothers’ lives.  Judging by this trailer, I wish we had a new Point Break on our hands, but I’m not sure what to make of Drift.  While the latest surfing flick, Chasing Mavericks, tanked hard, that doesn’t mean there’s no interest in the genre, so hopefully Drift will have a story to back up cool scenes of riding waves.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Lesley-Ann BrandtDrift is due out in 2013.

Xavier Samuel Talks ANONYMOUS, TWILIGHT Fans and DRIFT

Xavier Samuel ANONYMOUS, TWILIGHT and DRIFT interview slice

With Roland Emmerich’s period drama Anonymous now playing, it’s time to post the last of my video interviews with the cast.  While Emmerich is known for his big-budget disaster movies like 2012 and Independence Day, Anonymous is a big departure by centering on a conspiracy to cover up the true author of Shakespeare’s plays.  Emmerich made a really entertaining political thriller wrapped in a controversial theory.  The film stars Rhys Ifans, Jamie Campbell Bower, David Thewlis, Joely Richardson, Xavier Samuel and Vanessa Redgrave.  Here are some clips and the trailer.

During my interview with Xavier Samuel, we talked about how he got cast, karaoke, video games, his thoughts on the authorship of Shakespeare’s plays, how early does he start to prepare once he gets a project,  and what Twilight fans want to talk about when they meet him.  In addition, Samuel recently made a few Australian movies (Bait, A Few Best Man and Drift) and talks about them.  Hit the jump to watch.

First Images, Promo Poster, and Synopsis for the Surfing Drama DRIFT Starring Sam Worthington

drift

From AFM, we have the first images, poster, and synopsis for the surfing drama Drift.  Set in 1970s Austrailia, Drift centers on two brothers (Xavier Samuel and Myles Pollard) who launch a surf gear business, selling merchandise out of the back of their van.  For me, the main takeaway is the scruffy beard and shaggy hair cut sported by the normally clean-cut Sam Worthington, playing a surf photographer and filmmaker who travels with his a gorgeous Hawaiian surfer (Lesley-Ann Brandt)

Ben Nott and Morgan O’Neill directed Drift.  See the images, poster, and synopsis after the jump.

Sam Worthington Talks AVATAR Sequels, WRATH OF THE TITANS and DRIFT

by     Posted 3 years, 102 days ago

At the press day for the espionage thriller The Debt – about three Mossad secret agents who track down a Nazi war criminal in East Berlin in 1966, only to have the mission not turn out as planned – actor Sam Worthington gave brief updates on Clash of the Titans 2 and the development of the Avatar sequels. He also talked about his next role, as a surf photographer in Drift, which will film in Australia.

While we’ll run the portion of the interview about The Debt closer to that film’s August 31st release date, hit the jump for what he had to say about his other projects:

Sam Worthington has added yet another film to his ever-expanding list of projects.  Worthington tells West Australian [via The Playlist] that he plans to return to his native land next fall to shoot the surfing drama Drift.  Worthington, a lifelong surfer, said of the project, “I’m a WA boy at heart and to go back there and put something back into my home town is something I am really looking forward to.  There’s something pure and true about surfing, and there is something pure and true about this script.”  According to West Australian, the film is an “inspired-by-facts story of how surfing evolved from a pastime to a global industry, spawning household names such as Billabong and Rip Curl. Worthington will play a photographer and journalist instrumental in that revolution.”

Here’s everything else Worthington has got on his plate: Clash of the Titans 2 (set to film in the spring), Dracula: Year Zero (set to shoot in the summer), Avatar 2, Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future, The Last Days of American Crime, Man on a Ledge, and Quatermain.
