It was the only game in town, so Oblivion’s first place finish this weekend didn’t come as a shock. Universal’s sci-fi release had a solid debut – earning an estimated $38.1 million from 3,783 locations, or just under what G.I. Joe: Retaliation managed three weeks back. Oblivion also topped its initial domestic projection of $35 million, though the real strength of the Tom Cruise vehicle is overseas.

Last week, we told you that Oblivion had earned $60.4 million from its international launch. Even as his star has faded at home, Tom Cruise remains a big draw internationally – as Oblivion’s new estimated $150 million global cume can attest. But it’s the film’s US numbers that interest us today. I’ve already intimated that placing first on a week with no fresh competition is nothing to get hyperbolic about. In fact, I’d say that the team at Universal deserves a lot of credit for locking down this particular release date and guaranteeing a first-place finish… given the circumstances.

After a remarkably lucrative ten year span bookended by Mission: Impossible and Mission: Impossible III, Tom Cruise hit a financial rough patch. It took 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol to get him back in the box office’s good graces, though even that opportunity was soon squandered by the release of Rock of Ages. Cruise’s Knight & Day and Jack Reacher were both big hits overseas but failures ...

With AMC’s award-winning series Mad Men airing new episodes Sunday nights, I recently had the chance to participate in a roundtable interview with Christina Hendricks. Since the cast is always guarded when talking about upcoming episodes, most of the interview covered the twists and turns of last season, how much she finds out about upcoming storylines, Joan and Don's (Jon Hamm) relationship, the wardrobe, what the most challenging storylines were for her to play, and more. In addition, she also talked about Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster. Hit the jump to either read or listen to what Hendricks had to say.

Before going any further…spoilers from previous seasons and the season 6 premiere are discussed during this interview.

If you’d like to listen to the audio of this interview, click here. Otherwise the full transcript is below. Look for another Mad Men interview soon.

Question: This weekend in Austin, Mondo put out all these Drive posters, these really cool limited edition ones.

CHRISTINA HENDRICKS: Different from the ones that were out?

Definitely. I'm just curious, have you ever seen the art and all the other stuff?

HENDRICKS: No, I haven't. I haven't seen any of it. I wanted one of the… Diesel was going to do the Scorpion jackets and something fell through, but I still want one of those.

You can get variations of them online.

HENDRICKS: Really? I could deal with a variation. I want to rock it. I want to wear it around town. Maybe if you were in the movie, it's weird. ...

Opening this weekend in New York and Los Angeles is one of the best films you’re going to see this year: director Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines. The pic centers on a professional motorcycle rider turned bank robber (Ryan Gosling) and a rookie police officer (Bradley Cooper). Saying more would be detrimental to your enjoyment of the film, and I would encourage you to be very careful when reading about it. Pines also stars Eva Mendes, Bruce Greenwood, Dane DeHaan, Ray Liotta, Ben Mendelsohn, and Rose Byrne. For more on the film, here’s images, clips, and everything we’ve previously posted on the film.

At the recent New York City press day, I got to speak with Gosling. We talked about how he prepared to make sure his character looked real and authentic on screen, the motorcycle stunts, whether he's seen the Mondo Drive posters, his directorial debut How to Catch a Monster, whether he has seen a cut of Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives (Gosling says it's "very very extreme."), and reveals that they've asked some of the fans who made Drive posters to make some Only God Forgives posters! Hit the jump to watch.

Finally, The Place Beyond the Pines will be expanding into more theaters in April, so if you don’t live in NYC or L.A., you’ll still be able to see the film in the near future.

It was about a year ago that Mondo first confirmed that Tyler Stout would be working on a new poster for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive. This sent collectors into a frenzy of anticipation, a frenzy that only increased when it was also announced that Stout’s poster would serve as the cover at on a Mondo Vinyl release of the Drive soundtrack. We were told to expect both in June, and then…the waiting began. It seems that--between one thing and another—both projects hit a few snags on their way to that June, 2012 drop date, but the wait appears to be over: we know now what the poster looks like and when the soundtrack will drop (we’ve also got a pretty good idea when the poster will arrive). Wanna know what we know? Meet me after the jump, folks.

No need to pad this thing out: the fine folks at Pitchfork have already said everything that needs to be said. From their reveal of the Tyler Stout Drive poster and Mondo Vinyl Drive soundtrack :
The LP will be available in person at Austin's Mondo Gallery on March 15; it'll be for sale through their website on March 22. It's a 2xLP set with gatefold sleeve on black vinyl-- although random copies will be on hot pink vinyl.

The soundtrack features a score by Cliff Martinez, plus tracks by Chromatics, College, Kavinsky and Lovefoxxx, and others. (Geoff Barrow's Invada label has also released the soundtrack on vinyl.)
And what’s it look like? Here’s the poster:

There’s zero empirical evidence to back up the theory, but here at Limited Paper we tend to think that there aren’t a lot of hard-core collectors out there with big Valentine’s Day plans. Quite frankly, when the vast majority of your spending money is being pushed towards one fancifully-colored 24x36” sheet of paper after another, there isn’t much budget left for schmoozing the ladies (or the gents, if that’s your thing). Sure, you could’ve bought her that diamond-encrusted toaster she’s always wanted, but there’s something like 400 prints dropping this week: one has to prioritize.

But what if you have a significant other…and they’re also into poster collecting? Well, good news, buddy: Bottleneck Gallery’s Get a Room (opening in NYC this Friday) is filled with a ton of romantic, movie-themed posters your guy or gal will be jazzed to have hanging on their wall, and we’ve got preview pics for you (including new work from Craig Drake, Godmachine, and Cuyler Smith) after the jump.

Before we get into our preview of Bottleneck Gallery’s Get a Room, let me first point out that the paragraph above should not be taken seriously: I’m well aware that many collectors have girl/boyfriends (or wives/husbands). That was a bit of exaggeration employed in the name of humor, so please don’t feel as though you or your ability to get laid are being called into question (you’d think we could skip this part, but you’d also be amazed at how easily lame jokes can provoke butt-hurt); I’m sure ...

Just this past week, Limited Paper named Australian artist Ken Taylor as the “Most Vital Artist of 2012,” and the response to that decision seemed unanimously positive. While some readers seemed to have a few minor quibbles about which posters made up our “20 Best Posters of 2012” list" list, I heard from literally no one who felt that Taylor—the guy who also created 2012’s best print—was the wrong choice for Artist of the year. How will he fare in 2013? Only time will tell, but if the first Mondo poster of the year is any indication, Taylor’s skills only seem to get sharper. See for yourselves: we’ve got his poster for Jurassic Park (and find out when it’s going on sale) after the jump, folks.

Oh, and they’ve also announced a few updates regarding when we’ll see the next Mondo Gallery show and where Tyler Stout’s Drive is at. It’s all waiting for ya after the jump, folks.

We’re going to get to Ken Taylor’s jaw-dropping Jurassic Park in just a moment, but first let’s take a quick detour to mention the blog post Mondo just posted over on their website. Primarily, the post is there to announce the vinyl release of the Deadly Spawn soundtrack (with artwork from Phantom City Creative! That’s it below), but embedded within that announcement are a few other interesting tidbits. For instance:
We just announced Ken Taylor’s JURASSIC PARK poster and we’ll be announcing the January gallery show soon…

We also announced that we would be putting DRIVE out with ...

We’ve got a ton of stuff to get through in Limited Paper today, including a look at Mondo’s next big gallery show (featuring artwork from Australian duo We Buy Your Kids), FroDesignCo’s series of Mythic Beasts Travel Posters (featuring Limited Paper’s spirit animal, the Chupacabra), Gallery1988’s Rated G (featuring work from Justin White), and—because why the hell not—we also need to provide an update on our latest contest/giveaway while teasing the next one. Phew. Bring a bookmark and meet me on the other side of the jump, my fellow poster junkies.

Since Limited Paper started earlier this year, we’ve been fortunate enough to see a bunch of artists and galleries join our readership (every so often, I’ll get an email from [insert name of artist you love here], and will be totally stunned to find out they’re a Limited Paper reader), and they’ve been great about giving us a head’s up whenever they’ve got something new on the horizon. Since I’m the only one writing Limited Paper, virtually all of the “rounding up material for content” responsibilities falls on my shoulders, and whenever an artist or gallery reaches out to let us know they’ve got something in the works, it’s a huge help towards keeping things running smoothly here at Limited Paper HQ.

Today’s installment of Limited Paper, for instance, is composed entirely of announcements and links provided by the artists and companies who help make up our readership, and we thank ‘em all for giving us the head’s up. Obviously, we ...

Even though bookshelves currently feature the sequel to James Sallis' novel Drive, on which Nicolas Winding Refn's 2011 cult film was based, the director has no plans to adapt it. We previously brought you the author's thoughts on an adaptation of Driven; that film may still go ahead, just not with Refn and star Ryan Gosling attached. However, Refn commented on the fact that even though a Drive sequel is out of the question, the character of The Driver may yet appear again on screen. Hit the jump to get this sorted out.

Via The Playlist, Refn recently spoke to The Evening Standard about the progress on the Driven adaptation, in blunt fashion:
"That is never going to happen. But the character of The Driver might return in another film. We're playing with that idea. We'll see what happens."
So unless Sallis has given his blessing or Refn has purchased the rights to the character, it looks like we could see The Driver in a Drive spin-off of sorts. This is just speculation, but perhaps Refn didn't want to get slapped with a "franchise director" tag or maybe Sallis' follow-up simply didn't work for him. We'll keep an eye out for more on the Drive sequel/spin-off.

In related news, Refn is preparing to release his next film, Only God Forgives, which stars Gosling as a man living in exile in Bangkok after killing a cop. He manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation and finds his peaceful coexistence upended after his brother is killed for ...

For the past month, we’ve been running a new column here at Collider.com called Limited Paper , and—thus far—it’s been a smashing success: we’ve received shout-outs from a number of artists, galleries, and dealers within the poster community, we’ve showcased a ton of awesome prints, and we’ve seen our readership continue to grow with each passing installment. But occasionally, our esteemed readership has pointed out that—for as awesome as the screenprints presented in Limited Paper are—they’re usually sold out by the time we show ‘em to you. Depending on how badly you want those prints, that could be a problem. Luckily, we’ve got a solution: Unlimited Paper. Meet me after the jump for links to some super-cool screenprints that you can buy…right now.

The concept behind Limited Paper—coverage regarding limited-edition screenprints and the poster-collecting community—is simple; it’s also proved to be a popular concept, and all of us here at Collider HQ have been really jazzed to discover that so many of you are as excited about these fancy-shmancy pieces of paper as we are. The poster-collecting community’s growing by the day, and (with so many kick-ass, limited edition screenprints popping up each week) it’s easy to see why.

The thing about limited-edition collectibles is that they have a habit of selling out quickly. Take, for instance, the Drew Struzan screenprints for The Thing that Mondo dropped online last week. Despite the unusually-high (but worth-every-penny) $250 price point, the Thing prints Mondo released online sold out in a matter of seconds…leading to ...

If you had told me that the dad on Malcolm in the Middle would become one of my favorite actors, I'd never have believed you. But after years of amazing work on AMC's brilliant drama Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston has shown that he can transform himself into any character and make it believable. It's probably why during the last few hiatuses he's landed small but important roles in films like Drive, John Carter, The Lincoln Lawyer, Red Tails, Larry Crowne, and this summer's remake of Total Recall. In director Len Wiseman's film, Cranston plays Vilos Cohaagen, who was originally played by the great Ronny Cox. And like the original, Cohaagen is a close friend and ally of Quaid/Hauser (Colin Farrell) who wants to see his friend return home.

Last summer I got to visit the set of Total Recall when the production was filming in Toronto and participated in a group interview with Cranston. He talked about why he wanted to play the role, what's different about his version of Cohaagen, what are his characters motivations, filming the action, his process as an actor, his thoughts on the end of Breaking Bad, and a lot more. In addition, Cranston reveals that he was offered Kevin Bacon's role in X-Men: First Class but turned it down to be in director Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive. Hit the jump to either read or listen to what Cranston had to say.

Before getting to the interview, here's the latest trailer:

As usual, I'm offering you two ways ...

Regular readers of our site know that we all loved Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive and would jump at the chance to see the director return with star Ryan Gosling for a possible sequel. The original centered on an LA stunt driver who moonlighted as a wheelman for criminals. Now that the second book from Drive author, James Sallis, has been out on the shelves for a couple of months, he's been kind enough to give some updates on the sequel's progress. Driven, the follow-up to the sure-to-be cult classic, is admittedly in the earliest of stages of development. The good thing is that the plot of the sequel takes place seven years after the original, which would hopefully be more than enough time to get a second film off the ground (the first took six years all told). Hit the jump to see what Sallis had to say about Gosling, writing the sequel and more on Driven.

There are clearly SPOILERS ahead for those who haven't seen the original film or read the book; there are even MORE SPOILERS regarding the sequel, so turn back now if that bothers you. In an interview with The Independent (via The Playlist), Sallis commented on both Driven the book and the possible movie. The sequel picks up seven years after Drive with the Driver having left his old life behind him, become a legitimate businessman and even landed himself a fiancee. His past quickly comes back to haunt him when he and his fiancee ...

Since the MTV Movie Awards air in the middle of the summer, they're allowed to pull from successful spring pictures. This year, they've done exactly that and awarded The Hunger Games with eight nominations. However, MTV didn't forget the movies of last summer, and also gave eight nods to Bridesmaids. As for the other nominees, the Twilight series has always dominated the MTV Movie Awards in the past, but The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 only pulled in two nominations this year. It may be a case of out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new, but it's worth noting that this was the first year where nominees were chosen by a panel of industry insiders instead of online voting. I don't know why MTV made that change (it's not like anyone can make the awards more respectable), but fans will still get to choose the winners. While the MTV Movie Awards are really more of a platform for funny sketches and showing clips from upcoming movies, an awards ceremony that allows you to give Drive an award for "A Real Hero" can't be all bad.

Hit the jump to check out the nominees. The 2012 MTV Movie Awards air live on June 3rd at 9/8c.

The soundtrack and Cliff Martinez' score for Drive will be revered for years to come. The music plays perfectly into the 80s vibe, so it's only fitting that the geniuses at Mondo will release the soundtrack and score on vinyl this summer. To sweeten a deal that was already pretty sweet, Mondo has hired artist Tyler Stout to design the album cover and packaging, and there will also be a limited edition screen-printed poster. The 2xLP is due out in June, so you've got a little time to track down a record player.

Jean Dujardin must have been just as surprised as everyone else when he didn’t hear his name being called out as they announced the Best Actor award at tonight’s César ceremony in Paris. The Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma opted instead for Omar Sy, who stars in Untouchables, the biggest box-office smash of 2011 in France. A choice that many question.
“Jean Dujardin will win an Oscar for best actor but not a César. How embarrassing…” tweeted (in French) @Les_Cesar_fake, a sentiment that was shared by many others.
Shortly after winning Best Actor, Omar Sy’s Wikipedia page was updated and said that he had won the best actor award “even though he didn't deserve it.” The comment was removed five minutes later… Another running joke is “Omar m’a tuer” (Omar killed me), in reference to the film of the same name. Maybe the Académie did not want to overcompensate Dujardin… or maybe this was their way of telling the Oscars, “We can do out own thing just to annoy you and everyone else.”

The Artist nevertheless won six of the ten awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress. Hit the jump for a recap of the evening and a full list of winners.

Bérénice Bejo was brutally honest in her speech: “I love all the other nominated actresses, but I really wanted this award!” I bet Jean Dujardin did too.

Presented for the eighth time by Antoine de Caunes, the 37th annual ceremony of the Césars ...

While most of us are still reeling from the fact that Drive, one of the best films of the year, nabbed a grand total of one Oscar nominations (for Best Sound Editing, no less), director Nicolas Winding Refn seems undeterred. The Danish filmmaker is hard at work on his follow-up, the Thailand-set Only God Forgives starring Ryan Gosling, and he seems keen on using his newfound success to further (pardon the pun) drive his career forward. The director recently gave a brief interview in which he was asked about the possibility of a sequel to Drive. While I all but expected the director to outright state that he has no intention of continuing Driver’s story, his answer took me a bit by surprise. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

As you may or may not know, Drive was based on the novel of the same name by author James Sallis. While it deviated quite a bit from the source material, Refn’s film used many of the same situations and overarching plot from Sallis’ novel. The author recently announced that he would be releasing a sequel to Drive, called Driven, this April. When asked in an interview with ShortList (via The Playlist) whether or not he had any plans to adapt the sequel, Refn responded thusly:
“Well I think that... hmm. Let me just say that I haven’t made up my mind yet. Stranger things have happened...”
Now I understand that this is about as "non-answer" as you can get, ...

The nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards have finally been unveiled. Many of the categories have fallen in line just as most have predicted (I fared alright with my predictions, but not great), with Hugo scoring 11 nods, followed closely by The Artist with 10. The biggest surprises are War Horse and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close getting in for Best Picture, the exclusion of The Adventures of Tintin from Best Animated Feature, and The Tree of Life nabbing Best Picture and Best Director nods (hooray!). On the snub side of things, despite landing the most precursor critics awards of any other actor in the race thus far, Albert Brooks was denied a Best Supporting Actor nod for his stellar work in Drive (boo). Additionally, Tilda Swinton was overlooked for giving the best performance of the year in We Need to Talk About Kevin, and AMPAS has no love for Michael Fassbender's haunting work in Shame.

There’s still plenty to be happy about, as Gary Oldman has his first ever Oscar Nomination (yes, that’s right) and Melissa McCarthy is a Best Supporting Actress nominee. Hit the jump to check out the full list of nominees. The 84th Academy Awards will be presented by Billy Crystal on February 26th.

BEST PICTURE

	The Artist
	The Descendants
	War Horse
	Moneyball
	The Tree of Life
	Midnight in Paris
	The Help
	Hugo
	Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

[Adam's Note: The big shocker here is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. The drama has landed virtually no precursor award recognition and most had completely written it off. ...

As I’ve been covering awards season pretty extensively here on the site over the past few months, I figured it would be appropriate to (foolishly) try to predict the upcoming Oscar nominations. It’s been a fairly tame year, as a few frontrunners were singled out early in the race and have held their ground throughout the grueling awards season. We haven’t been without a few surprises, as Steven Spielberg’s War Horse took a massive tumble following snubs from most of the major guilds, and David Fincher has surged back into the race bringing his adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with him.

Though there are plenty of safe bets when it comes to the 2012 Oscar nominations, there are still a few wildcards and tricky categories. I’ve put on my prognosticating cap (those interested can purchase one of these nifty hats at your local Target) and compiled a list of who and what I think will make the cut. Hit the jump to see how I think the nods will stack up when they’re announced on January 24th.

*Note: Due to an Academy rule change, this year there will be somewhere between five and 10 nominees for Best Picture. The number won't be revealed until the nominations are announced, so I'm taking a wild guesstimate and predicting there will be seven. In any case, I've listed the contenders in order of most likely to be nominated to least likely. So in the event that there are five nominees, cut off ...

In last week's "Top 5" I spent the opening paragraph musing about my anticipation for Steven Soderbergh's Haywire. I also promised the readers a quick "Before & After" discussion this week which would address whether or not the pic lived up to my expectations. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but said discussion will have to be postponed. I know, I know, I'm disappointed too. Fear not, though, I'm slated to check out the film tonight which means that I'll be able to deliver on my promise, albeit a week late. In the meantime...
...This week's "Top 5" installment brings you interviews with the cast of Underworld: Awakening and the aforementioned Haywire, a gallery of recent films in retro poster form, an ultra-disturbing Rugrats live-action trailer, and all of our Sundance 2012 coverage to date. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.
1. Kate Beckinsale, Michael Ealy, and More Talk UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING

Okay, I admit that I've seen more entries in the Twilight franchise than the Underworld franchise (1-0, to be exact). As disappointed as I am in myself, I would like to say that if a time ever comes where I have to choose vampire sides (or any sides for that matter) I'm taking Kate Beckinsale/Selene over, well, everyone. If you feel similarly, then I recommend checking out Steve's Underworld: Awakening video interviews with Beckinsale, Michael Ealy, India Eisley and Theo James.

2. Gina Carano, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, and Channing Tatum Talk HAYWIRE

Another awards ceremony, another The Artist triumph. Michel Hazanavicius’ silent film continues its near sweep of awards season as it took home the Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor prize from the London Film Critics Circle Awards. Surprisingly, the other film to tie The Artist with three awards was the Iranian drama A Separation. The foreign film has been riding a wave of immense positive word of mouth, and the London Film Critics awarded the pic with Foreign Language Film of the Year, Best Screenwriter, and Best Actress.

Nearly shut out of the awards was Britain’s own Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The espionage drama failed to pick up any major prizes and was sent home with a win for Best Production Design. Elsewhere, We Need to Talk About Kevin was named Best British Film, Anna Paquin shared the Best Actress prize with Meryl Streep for her work in Margaret (quickly becoming the little engine that could), and Michael Fassbender won British Actor of the Year for his stellar work in Shame and A Dangerous Method. Full list of winners after the jump, which includes the critics' top 10 films of 2011.

Though many are busy finalizing their predictions for the Best Actor and Best Picture Oscar categories, the Costume Designers Guild today announced nominees for excellence in wardrobe. The nods are split into three categories: contemporary, fantasy, and period. Among the films singled out are superhero fare like X-Men: First Class and Thor, blockbusters franchises Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and dramatic critical favorites like Drive and The Descendants. Personally, I’m thrilled to see the excellent work in X-Men: First Class singled out, and I’m still waiting for a reasonably priced way to own Ryan Gosling’s ridiculously cool jacket from Drive.

Hit the jump to see the full list of nominees. The winners will be announced on February 21st, and the nominees for the upcoming 84th Annual Academy Awards will be revealed this coming Tuesday, January 24th.
