HERCULES Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 9 days ago

dwayne-johnson-hercules

In the words of the big man himself, Dwayne Johnson was born to play Hercules.  With apologies to Kellan Lutz, there’s only one man in Hollywood these days that could convince audiences that he bested the Nemean Lion, beheaded the Lernaean Hydra, and beat back the Erymanthian Boar, and that man is The Rock.  Unfortunately, Brett Ratner’s take on the Hercules legend chose not to explore the hero’s twelve labors, but to adapt Steve Moore and Admira Wijaya’s graphic novel, “Hercules: The Thracian Wars.”  Perhaps if that had been communicated more clearly in the film’s marketing, audiences (and maybe even critics) would have given Hercules more of a chance, since it’s a surprisingly fun action-adventure film that lets Johnson swing away while surrounding him with a strong supporting cast.  Now that the film’s available on Blu-ray, you can check it out for yourself.

Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart Team Up for Rawson Marshall Thurber’s CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE

Central Intelligence hasn’t even gone into production yet, but it seems as though New Line could have a potential heavy hitter on their hands.  It’s being reported that Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart will step in front of the lens for Rawson Marshall Thurber in the spring.  Hart will play a high school sports star-turned-accountant who’s gearing up for a class reunion.  Prior to the event, he’s contacted by an old classmate (Johnson) who was the school bullies’ prime target back in the day.  Now, however, Johnson’s character is a CIA contract killer and he winds up recruiting Hart’s character to help him stop a plot to sell military secrets.

It’s a good thing those behind the film took their time with this one, whether it was intentional or not.  There’s no way a Dean Parisot-directed rendition with Ed Helms in Hart’s role could come close to the amount of hype Johnson and Hart’s version will spark.  Hit the jump for more on Central Intelligence.

FURIOUS 7 Trailer: Vin Diesel and the Family Return

Universal Pictures has released the first Furious 7 trailer for director James Wan’s (The Conjuring) action sequel.  I really dig how it starts off with an extended action sequence and think that’s a fantastic beat where Walker has to grab the rim of the car giving him an extra few feet of purchase on that clip.  Aside from that, the movie looks huge!  It definitely seems like more fun than the sixth installment and I’m hard pressed to think of an entry that looks as vibrantly colorful as this one (they seem to be leaning in to the humor as well).  It definitely looks like Wan successfully pulled off the transition from horror to action without missing a beat.  As a recent fan of these movies (my love for them got ignited with Fast 5), it’s nice to have something unabashedly fun to look forward to.

Poster For The Newly Titled FURIOUS 7, Trailer Hitting In Seven Days

So strange.  I was just watching Fast & Furious 6 on HBO Go last night and noticed that the title card actually just read Furious 6, which I thought was a nice compliment to the fifth installment (which was officially titled Fast 5).  So now that Fast & Furious 7 seems to formally be titled Furious 7, I don’t know what to think.  Actually, I do know what to think, which its not worry about the title so much and to look forward to some insanely fun ridiculousness next year.   Though director James Wan described the shoot as a challenge when I spoke to him recently, he also said he was incredibly proud of the film and that sentiment is definitely echoed in the text accompanying the poster reveal.

The film also stars Vin Diesel, Paul WalkerDwayne JohnsonMichelle RodriguezJason Statham, LudacrisTyrese GibsonRonda RouseyTony JaaNathalie EmmanuelLucas BlackJohn BrothertonDjimon Hounsou, and Kurt Russell.  Furious 7 opens in theaters on April 3, 2015.  Hit the jump for a better look poster and a note accompanying the trailer announcement.  It will be an interactive event that fans can participate in as well.

Yes, Really: Dwayne Johnson to Lead the BAYWATCH Movie

Dwayne Johnson has aptly been labeled “franchise steroids” for his ability to revitalize series like The Fast and the Furious, G.I. Joe, and even Journey to the Center of the Earth with his incredible charisma and screen presence.  This will be put to the ultimate test very soon, as THR now reports that Johnson is attached to star in the Baywatch movie for Paramount Pictures.  Moreover, the writing team of Sean Anders and John Morris have come aboard to direct the film after making their helming debut on the upcoming comedy Horrible Bosses 2.  More on this development after the jump.

Dwayne Johnson Confirms Role in Ludlum’s THE JANSON DIRECTIVE; Akiva Goldsman to Write Script

A couple of months ago Dwayne Johnson was reported to be in talks to star in Universal’s adaptation of Robert Ludlum‘s novel The Janson Directive.  Now it has been confirmed that he is officially cast.  Not only that, but Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman will be writing the script (presumably a page-one rewrite of the draft John Hlavin was commissioned to execute a few years ago).  Make no mistake, Universal wants to fashion this into a Bourne style franchise for Johnson and I… have no problem with that.  It’s gotta be better than The Bourne Legacy.

The story follows a former consular ops agent who goes into business as a private security consultant after becoming uncomfortable with the high number of sanctioned killings as a covert operative.  I’m kind of looking forward to seeing Johnson do serious action work that doesn’t have the wink and nod element built in (though I love the Fast & Furious movies).  Hit the jump for more on The Janson Directive.

TOP 5: TIFF 2014, Dwayne Johnson Cast in Upcoming SHAZAM Film, BIG HERO 6, Fall 2014 Horror Preview, Creepy as Hell CUB Trailer

This week’s Labor Day holiday afforded me the opportunity to check out a matinee screening of writer/director Richard Linklater‘s Boyhood. I consider myself a sucker for coming-of-age stories and, as such, I went into the movie expecting to like it. I didn’t expect to leave the theater feeling as if I’d just watched the greatest coming-of-age film ever made. From beginning to end, Boyhood feels important. Not “important” in that it demands to be taken seriously, rather in a way that feels as if Linklater is genuinely interested in capturing something authentic and meaningful. I never once got the impression that the timeline in which the film was made was being used as a gimmick for cheap emotional connection. To the contrary, Boyhood earns every emotional beat it hits by way of excellent performances (Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke stand out in particular), airtight pacing that documents the highlights of Mason’s adolescence, and sharp writing that makes it feel as if you didn’t miss all that much by bottling up 12 years of life into 165 minutes. I don’t know what kind of award chances Boyhood has and, to be honest, it really doesn’t matter. Awards are beneath this film. It’s a high-water mark not just for Linklater but for the medium in general.

All Boyhood hyperbole aside, this week’s Top 5 features all of our TIFF 2014 coverage to date, Dwayne Johnson being cast as “Black Adam” in Warner Bros. upcoming Shazam pic, interviews for and 24 things to know about Disney’s Big Hero 6, our Fall 2014 Horror Preview, and a disturbingly excellent trailer for the Belgian horror film Cub. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

We’ve been talking about Dwayne Johnson and the Shazam movie for a while now, but this morning, it became official; Johnson will portray Black Adam in the film.  Now that the news is out, New Line president Toby Emmerich is talking about the project and teasing its unique tone.

There are rumors floating around that Warner Bros. has tentatively scheduled Shazam for a 2016 release, just after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and if that really is the case, they’ll probably get moving on this soon enough.  Hit the jump for more on what Emmerich said about the project.

Last month Dwayne Johnson teased fans with an existential dilemma, should he play Shazam?  Or should he play Black Adam?  And now we know.  Johnson will be playing Black Adam in the upcoming DC Comics Shazam adaptation.

Warner Bros. is rumored to have tentatively scheduled a Shazam movie for 2016, which would be right after the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, so this could all tie into their (seemingly rushed) master plan to establish a wider cinematic universe.  Hit the jump for more on Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam.

It’s no secret that Warner Bros. is in the midst of building its own DC Comics Movies slate, crafting its answer to the highly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe.  They’ve already staked out release dates for nine upcoming DC Comics movies, and the in-production Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is looking like one massive Justice League prequel with appearances scheduled for Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and more.  The question on everyone’s minds, though, is in what order will Warner Bros. be introducing more standalone DC comics movies?  Well an answer may have surfaced by way of four URLs that Warner Bros. just registered, which just so happen to match up to four very specific DC comics properties.  More after the jump.

Friday Box Office: LUCY Shows More Muscle Than HERCULES on Opening Day

It looks like Universal’s decision to move up the release date for Lucy will go down as one of the summer’s smartest plays.  Director Luc Besson’s sci-fi pic was supposed to open in August – not exactly an endorsement of its strong box office potential.  But arriving two weeks earlier than planned, Lucy is now aiming for one of the best sci-fi debuts of 2014 with at least $45 million.  That’s double what the R-rated title was originally projected to earn and is more than enough to make fellow newcomer Hercules look puny by comparison.  The action pic starring Dwayne Johnson came in second on Friday and should earn $28 million on its debut weekend.  That’s right on track with early projections for the film, though the number was supposed to equal a first place finish for the son of Zeus.

Dwayne Johnson Teases Possible SHAZAM Movie; Announcement Coming at Comic-Con?

Okay.  So we know that DC and Warner Bros. would really like to play some catchup with Marvel and Disney.  Man of Steel didn’t do especially well, so they’re moving full steam ahead into the Avengers-esque territory of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, which will be shot back-to-back by Zack Snyder.

But wouldn’t it be nice if they put some solo movies in there too?  There were some rumors last month about a potentially leaked Warner Bros. schedule for Comic-Con this week that included a Wonder Woman movie, a Sandman movie and a Shazam movie.  And it’s the latter film that Dwayne Johnson seems to be hinting at.  Hit the jump for more on a possible Shazam movie starring Dwayne Johnson.
