Last week E3 2014 came to a close, but it left plenty to be excited for in the near future.  The “Big 3”, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony, all have their Next Gen systems in consumer hands, so this year was all about proving why you shouldn’t lose faith in their product.  With owners of the Xbox One, Wii U, and Playstation 4 all clamoring for games for their libraries, there are quite a few titles I think you should be on the look out for.  Click on through to see my top games and over a 100 pictures of E3 2014.

TOP 5: 22 JUMP STREET, First Trailer for DUMB AND DUMBER TO, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2, BIRDMAN Trailer, E3 2014 Coverage

by     Posted 190 days ago

Following on the heels of one of my favorite comedies of the past five years is no small task and yet 22 Jump Street manages to stand toe-to-toe with its hugely successful predecessor at almost every turn. Sure its self-awareness can be heavy-handed at times, but the film’s deconstruction of comedy sequels is refreshingly on point and far more incisive than a summer blockbuster has any right to be. As far as performances go, while Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube deserve all the praise they receive for carrying the movie, I can’t say enough about how much Jillian Bell brings to the table in every single scene she’s a part of. The former SNL writer is responsible for my biggest laugh of the film which is saying a lot when you consider the consistent laughs that 22 elicits. Add in a near perfect end credits sequence for good measure and the result is the rare sequel that knows exactly what it is, where it came from, and where it wants to go.

We’ll talk more about 22 Jump Street after the jump while the rest of this week’s Top 5 highlights the first trailer for Dumb and Dumber To, interviews for and a review of How to Train Your Dragon 2, the excellent first trailer for director Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s Birdman starring Michael Keaton, and a look at some of the most popular video game trailer premieres from E3 2014. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

Yesterday, we got a slew of new trailers from Microsoft’s Xbox presentation, and now we have even more from what Sony has on tap for PlayStation.  Like Xbox, there are plenty of highly-anticipated sequels such as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, infamous First Light, and more.  There’s also Destiny, the big, new game from Halo developers Bungie.  And like Microsoft is porting the Halo series to the next-gen, Sony is following suit by bringing The Last of Us to the PlayStation 4 with The Last of Us: Remastered.  But when it comes to new versions of old games, I’m incredibly excited for the Grim Fandango remake, the critically acclaimed PC game that will now be on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.

Microsoft just wrapped their E3 2014 presentation, which means they had plenty of trailers on hand for some of their hottest upcoming games.  They had annual franchises (Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Assassins Creed: Unity), highly anticipated sequels (Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crackdown), and many more.  For me, the best game of the presentation was Sunset Overdrive, which was bright, colorful, goofy, and looks like it has a sense of humor. Hit the jump to check out the new Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare trailer and many more.

TOP 5: MAN OF STEEL, First Trailer and Poster for THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, THIS IS THE END, New ELYSIUM Trailer, E3 2013 Recap

by     Posted 1 year, 189 days ago

Was there really a chance of writing about something other than Man of Steel in this week’s opening paragraph? Well, maybe. I did really enjoy This Is the End. But, alas, this week is about Supes’ return to the big screen. I watched the film (in 2D) for the first time last night and, as far as superhero movies go, it elicited an emotional response from me that few in the genre have. Sure, there were times where the grand scale of destruction left me cold and the product placement took me out of the moment (if only to admire some beautiful appliances meeting their untimely demise). Nevertheless, the themes of love, sacrifice, acceptance, and trust were beautifully woven into the film’s text in such a way that it made me do something I’ve only done one other time (while reading Grant Morrison‘s excellent All-Star Superman run): become emotionally invested in the Man of Steel.

While this is undoubtedly Kal-El’s weekend, in addition to Man of Steel interviews and more, this week’s Top 5 also includes the first teaser trailer and poster for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, This Is the End interviews with Seth Rogen and more, the new Elysium trailer, and a recap of E3 2013 from the convention floor. Learn more about all of the above via a link and brief recap after the jump.

E3 2013 has come to a close and I can say it was definitely an interesting show.  Xbox One and Playstation 4 were front and center, however the Big N had a strong lineup for both the Wii U and 3DS.  While it was full of new consoles, new games, and innovation, was there really anything you should be running out to pre-order?  Find out after the jump along with over 100 pictures and all the highs and lows of this years event.

playstation 4

Earlier today, Microsoft announced the price and release date of the Xbox One.  Sony was quick to follow with information on the PlayStation 4 and finally unveiled the new design at E3.  The PS4 will sell for $399 when it is released later this year, $100 less than the $499 list price of the Xbox One.  You can now pre-order the console at Amazon—keep in mind they won’t charge you until it ships.  There are 140 games in development for the PS4, including 100 that are set to be available in the first year of release.

See the new design and video of the announcement after the jump.

The trailers coming out of the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo have been blowing my mind and promise to blow a hole in my wallet when the new games become available.  If you missed our previous batches of trailers, you can check them out here and here (and don’t miss our villainous update on the new Star Trek game!).  The next round of trailers and demos features the much anticipated Star Wars 1313, in which players control a bounty hunter on one of the many levels of the city-planet, Coruscant.  We’ve also got the next installment in the epic Assassin’s Creed franchise, as well as a contemporary take on assassins from Ubisoft,  a new game from the makers of Heavy Rain which features the voice and likeness of Ellen Page and more!  Hit the jump to check them out.

E3 is upon us, which means it’s time to look on with growing anticipation at the video games set for release in the near future.  A bevy of first/new trailers have gone online for a number of games, and we’ve rounded up a good deal of them in one, tidy article.  After the jump you’ll find trailers and gameplay for Halo 4, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Sim City, Dead Space 3, Resident Evil 6, Lococycle, Matter, Ascend: New Gods, Legend: Legacy of Dragons, and more.

E3 2012 Video Game Preview: Trailers for TOMB RAIDER, CASTLEVANIA, GUARDIANS OF MIDDLE EARTH, Behind the Scenes of HALO 4 and More

With the Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3 2012) set to kick off on June 5th at the Los Angeles Convention Center, we thought we’d bring you a preview of some of the major video games that are going to be on display.  This year will feature a new installment in the Halo franchise, a return to form for the groundbreaking Tomb Raider series and a few new LEGO games that will please fans of DC heroes and Lord of the Rings alike.  There’s also talk of a new game from LucasArts, titled Star Wars 1313 but unfortunately there’s no video to share as of yet.
As someone who grew up with blocky monochrome pixels bouncing around the screen, I’m continually impressed by the level of realism and beauty that comes out of these games.  Hit the jump to check out a variety of jaw-dropping trailers and previews.

Nintendo Announces Wii U at E3; a New Way to Play the Same Old Franchises [UPDATED]

by     Posted 3 years, 197 days ago

If Nintendo brought the same innovation to their software titles as they did to their hardware development, they wouldn’t need to make ten Mario games a year with some Zelda, Kirby, StarFox, and Metroid thrown in for good measure.  At this year’s E3, Nintendo announced their next generation console, the “Wii U”.  Let’s just get past the awful name.  Nintendo says it has to do with personalization (and then they showed nothing at their presentation to reflect that personalization) and I guess that means “iWii” and “uWii” were out.

But the name doesn’t matter.  The games matter…insofar as they show off Nintendo’s latest hardware innovation which is a controller that has a giant touchscreen in the middle.  Hit the jump for more on the Wii U, Nintendo’s E3 presentation, and my thoughts on both. [Updated: We've now added footage of the presentation, which you can check out after the jump.]

E3 2011: Trailers and Gameplay Walkthroughs for BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY, MODERN WARFARE 3, GEARS OF WAR 3, HALO 4, STAR WARS, and More

by     Posted 3 years, 198 days ago

With E3 2011 kicking off today at the Los Angeles Convention Center, many of the video game industry’s most anticipated titles have released new footage to reassure people like me that many of their release dates cannot get here soon enough (well, except for maybe all of the new Kinect titles…I don’t mind waiting around to not play those). Varying from debut trailers to gameplay walkthroughs/demos, after the jump you can find a roundup of some of the latest footage from games such as Batman: Arkham City, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Halo 4 and the anniversary Halo: Combat Evolved, Star Wars Kinect and Star Wars: The Old Republic, Mass Effect 3, and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

It’s tough for me to get excited for anything Star Wars (over-exposure and the stain of the prequels) and I’m no fan of MMORPGs (I don’t play well with others), but I can’t help but admire the sheer ambition of BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic.  This trailer not only hints at the number of characters and worlds you’ll be traversing, but the fact that they’ve also managed to include space battles intrigues me.  I’m not sure if it will all come together, but it certainly looks like The Old Republic will be the MMO that can draw everyone who fled from Star Wars Galaxies.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and be on the lookout for more coverage on the game when E3 begins tomorrow.  Star Wars: The Old Republic is expected to be released in the second half of 2011 for Windows PC.

E3 doesn’t technically start until Tuesday, but all the developers are trying to get a jump on each other which is funny because that means no one gets a jump on anybody.  I assume the plan is to get people excited with a trailer and then at E3 the developer will show some of the game and explain what players can do in it.  There will be presentations, there will be demos, and the only thing you’re not likely to see at E3 is Nintendo announcing an IP that isn’t based off a pre-existing property.

Trailers have gone online for a bunch of games, but I’m not going to turn this site into GameTrailers, so here are the trailers for the reboot of Tomb Raider (no gameplay shown, but plenty of awful voiceover dialogue), Soul Calibur V (cheesy story and voice acting, but the games have always been fun), and Saints Row: The Third (no gameplay, but a previously released screenshot showed your character beating someone with a dildo bat so I’m sold).  Hit the jump to check out the trailers.
