Jack-the-Giant-Slayer-slice

Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer was doomed to failure.  The film was delayed from summer of 2012 until March of 2013, and the advertising could never find the right tone to sell the film.  And so its eventual release was met with yawns.  But it’s actually a moderately entertaining little adventure film.  Nicholas Hoult stars as the titular Jack, who comes across some magic beans that change his life.  The film also stars Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy, Eleanor Tomlinson, and Ian McShane, and my review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Official Trailer for Starz’s New Limited Series THE WHITE QUEEN

by     Posted 1 year, 129 days ago

Starz has released a full-length trailer for its new limited series The White Queen.  Based on Phillippa Gregory’s best-selling series of novels that dramatize the War of the Roses, the show is told from the perspective of three women who laid claim to the English throne in the mid 15th century: Elizabeth Woodville (The White Queen), Margaret Beaufort (The Red Queen), and Anne Neville (The Kingmaker’s Daughter).  It’s clear from this debut trailer that the show is very heavily influenced by the success of HBO’s Game of Thrones, but the prospect of telling an historical story from a female perspective is certainly promising.  Moreover, the “limited series” (ie. miniseries) nature of the show means that Starz will be telling a complete story from beginning to end in 10 episodes.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The show stars Rebecca Ferguson, Max Irons, Janet McTeer, James Frain, Amanda Hale, Faye Marsay, David Oakes, Eleanor Tomlinson, Aneurin Barnard, Ben Lamb, and Tom McKayThe White Queen will premiere on Starz on August 10th.

Bryan Singer’s fantasy-adventure film Jack the Giant Slayer is now playing in theaters.  Starring Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) as the title character, the big-budget fairy tale follows Jack the farmer as he leads an expedition into the land of the giants in order to rescue a kidnapped princess (Eleanor Tomlinson). The film also stars Ian McShane, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Eddie Marsan, Bill Nighy and Warwick Davis.

Recently, I landed an exclusive phone interview with Tomlinson, who plays Princess Isabelle.  We talked about making the movie, script changes, doing press, how she got into acting and landed this role, filming with 3D cameras and CGI monsters, collaborating with Singer, deleted scenes and more.  In addition, we also talked about Siberian Education with John Malkovich, and her upcoming TV series White Queen.   Hit the jump for what she had to say.

There are two ways to read a bedtime story to a child.  The first is to be animated, and to draw the child into the world.  You move around, you do the voices of the characters, you pause for dramatic affect, and you help the child craft a dream.  The other way is to lethargically read the words on the page, and hope the damn kid goes to bed already.  Bryan Singer‘s Jack the Giant Slayer plays like bored parent who begrudgingly recites the same familiar tale.  Most of the cast seems to have no idea what to do with their one-dimensional characters, and they’re stuck in a bland world that offers few challenges.  Furthermore, the film looks astoundingly cheap from the CGI effects right down to the costumes.  There’s no imagination to Jack the Giant Slayer, and it fails to make a case for why it even needs to exist.

3 New Featurettes from JACK THE GIANT SLAYER Highlight the Film’s Digital and Practical Effects with Commentary from the Cast and Crew

Up until this point, I wasn’t entirely clear on the tone of Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer, but these three new featurettes help to clarify that issue.  In terms of recent fairy tale movies, Jack the Giant Slayer appears to be more tonally in line with the lighter Mirror Mirror than the more “gritty and realistic” Snow White and the Huntsman.  Approaching the film with this expectation (and knowing that Ewan McGregor gets rolled up in dough like a pig in a blanket), one would probably enjoy it more for the fun family adventure film that it is.

Also starring Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson and Ian McShane, Jack the Giant Slayer opens in 3D on March 1st.  Hit the jump to watch three new featurettes.

New Trailer for JACK THE GIANT SLAYER

Jack-the-Giant-Slayer-slice

A new trailer has been released for director Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer.  This trailer takes on a wildly different tone than the previous trailer and TV spots, as the film is painted as more of an “intense actioner” rather than a “fantasy adventure,” complete with pulsating rock music fast-cut fight sequences.  Though I’m all for a new adventure film from Singer, something still feels a bit off with Jack the Giant Slayer.  The CG giants don’t necessarily look all that convincing or threatening, and I’m hoping there’s more fun to be had than the trailers are letting on.  Nicholas Hoult more than proved his ability at leading a film with the swell Warm Bodies and Ewan McGregor looks to be having a blast, so hopefully the full feature delivers on the adventure aspect.

Hit the jump to watch the new trailer, and if you missed any of Steve’s set visit coverage, click here. The film also stars Eleanor Tomlinson, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, and Bill Nighy. Jack the Giant Slayer opens in 3D on March 1st.

A new teaser for a new trailer for Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer is now available.  It does the job well (ie, teasing) as, in just thirty seconds, we see Jack, a magic bean, a house-crashing beanstalk, a disrobing princess, a bewildered group of soldiers and a stampeding army of giants.  Not bad for a teaser!

TOP 5: OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Set Visit, Duncan Jones Directing WORLD OF WARCRAFT, JACK THE GIANT SLAYER Set Visit, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, Sundance 2013 Wrap-Up

Prior to last Sunday, Zero Dark Thirty was my favorite pic of 2012 by a considerable margin. However, after my matinee viewing of Silver Linings Playbook, that margin has been replaced with a draw. Whereas Zero provided me with a tension that left me on the verge of breathless at moments, Playbook‘s spectacular performances and head-on portrayal of mental illness and our ability to help each other cope/prevail proved not only hugely entertaining but also quite cathartic.

My 2012 movie scorecard aside, this week’s Top 5 includes our set visit coverage of Oz the Great and Powerful, Duncan Jones being tapped to helm the World of Warcraft movie, more visit coverage from the set of Jack the Giant Slayer, a slew of news from X-Men: Days of Future Past, and a Sundance 2013 wrap-up. A brief recap and link to each of the above is promised after the jump.

15 Things to Know About Bryan Singer’s JACK THE GIANT SLAYER From Our Set Visit; Plus Video Blog Recap and Written Report

About a hundred knights are standing inside the castle of Albion.  They’re wearing silver armor with swords in their hands as the castle is gearing up for a fight.  Outside the walls, the King rides along with his daughter (the princess) and about a dozen knights on horseback.  They’re being chased by 24-feet-tall giants.  Well I think they are 24-feet-talle, because the truth is the King and his men are really only riding from a few cameras, as the giants will be added in during post production.

Let me back up a second.

It’s August 4th, 2011, and I’m flying back from London.  The other day I was standing on the set of Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer about an hour outside London.  While there, I got to watch a lot of filming, see tons of raw footage, and I also got to see a great deal of pre-viz.  While some set visits are guarded with the actors being careful what they say, Singer and everyone on the film opened their arms to the visiting online reporters and showed us why they’re excited to be making this film.  And based on what I saw, Jack has the possibility of being a really cool fantasy film.  Much more after the jump.

Eleanor Tomlinson Talks Elaborate Costumes, Filming the Beanstalk Sequence, How She Landed the Role, and More on the Set of JACK THE GIANT SLAYER

While you may have seen Eleanor Tomlinson in such films as Alice in Wonderland or The Illusionist, in director Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer, she’s landed her first big studio leading role as Princess Isabelle.  When the production was filming outside London back in the summer of 2011, I got to visit the set with a few other reporters and Tomlinson told us more about her character:

“She didn’t want to be a princess. She was just born into this life. As amazing as it is, it’s not necessarily what she wants. She feels a bit trapped.  Her relationship with her father, after her mother died, is coming under a lot of pressure, because he’s the king and he doesn’t understand her. She just wants to be a normal girl. She wants to fall in love for love, not for the kingdom. She’s got that temper, that spark about her, which is different from other fairy tales, I think.”

In addition, Tomlinson talked about what it’s been like working on her first big studio movie, the costumes, collaborating with the other actors, the 3D, and so much more.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.

Director Bryan Singer is putting the final casting pieces into place in his epic adventure story Jack the Giant Killer. Deadline reports that British actress Eleanor Tomlinson (Alice in Wonderland) has landed the female lead in the flick, opposite Nicholas Hoult who stars as the titular Jack. Tomlinson will play the princess who gets kidnapped by the giants, spurring Jack into action to rescue her from the land of the giants.

In addition to Hoult and Tomlinson, Ewan McGregor joined the cast last week, while Stanley Tucci is signed to star as the villain and Bill Nighy and John Kassir take on the role of the two-headed leader of the giants. Singer took his time in casting the lead roles in this film, testing a number of actors and actresses for the parts. Filming is set to begin this month in London.
