DOM HEMINGWAY Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 84 days ago

dom-hemingway-blu-ray-review

Director Richard Shepard’s comedy Dom Hemingway tells you exactly what kind of film it is with its opening scene: Jude Law delivers an ode to his, um, member, directly into the camera while engaging in a certain act in a prison shower.  It’s vulgar and hilarious all at the same time, and Law delivers the lines with such gusto that you’re inclined to take this guy’s word for it.  The rest of the film is an absolute delight, but particularly the first act is a whirlwind mix of hilarity, sadness, and pure boldness as we follow the titular Hemingway’s very specific path to rehabilitation after being released from prison.  Read my full Dom Hemingway Blu-ray review after the jump.

game-of-thrones-season-4-finale-images

HBO’s most popular TV series of all time, Game of Thrones, closed out its fourth season last night with almost certainly the show’s best finale yet.  Though traditionally the fantasy drama series has used its finales as a sort of denouement from the previous episode’s shocking events, last night’s episode packed a multitude of surprises, thrills, and emotion into a wholly satisfying 66 minutes.  Though we still have a while to wait before the show returns for season five, HBO has released a large gallery of images from last night’s episode for your perusing pleasure.  If you’re itching for a closer look at some of the more strange or impactful moments from the episode, these stills should be sufficient.

GAME OF THRONES Season 4 Premiere Recap: “Two Swords”

There’s a reason why HBO had a twenty-five-minute recap of Game of Thrones third season in preparation for the fourth: the tales have become more varied and twisted than the swords that make up the Iron Throne.  Picking up halfway through A Storm of Swords‘ story (the massive third book of the Song of Ice and Fire series), Game of Thrones‘ new season had a lot to catch up on, and a lot to explain moving forward.  The most powerful and meaningful sequence though was its first: the Lannisters are not just conquering their enemies, they’re gobbling them up and repurposing them.  Hit the jump for more.

The fourth season premiere of HBO’s massively popular drama series Game of Thrones is just a few short days away, and in anticipation of the event, the network has unveiled a new gallery of images teasing the new season.  These 10 episodes will cover roughly the second half of the third book in George R.R. Martin’s series, A Storm of Swords, and as we can see in these images, many characters will find themselves in precarious situations.  Most notably, this new image gallery gives us a close look at Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) dragons, which have grown considerably since we last saw them.

Hit the jump to take a look at the images.  The show also stars Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Charles Dance, Kit Harington, Rose Leslie, Natalie Dormer, Gwendoline Christie, and Jack GleesonGame of Thrones season four premieres on HBO Sunday, April 6th.  Check back here on Collider after the episode to read Allison’s full recap.

DOM HEMINGWAY Review

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.  Dom Hemingway opens today in limited release.]

If the Oscars had a category for Most Creative Use of Vulgar Language (and they should), writer-director Richard Sheperd would be worthy of a Lifetime Achievement Award for Dom Hemingway. Rarely has the use of dirty words become a virtuoso masterpiece of language, but Dom Hemingway turns swearing into high art. Sheperd provides the words, but star Jude Law brings them to vile, explosive, hilarious life in what may be the best performance of his career thus far. There’s also a story and character development that’s all well and good, but Dom Hemingway is mostly about grabbing us by the throat and pummeling us with filthy, hilarious speeches and one-liners.

New Trailer for GAME OF THRONES Season 4

HBO has released yet another trailer for the fourth season of Game of Thrones.  Watching this trailer, it’s important to remember that there are still only ten episodes, and we’ve got quite a lot of storylines on our hands.  At some point, we may want to be grateful for some character deaths if only to unburden the plot.  Of course, I say that now and then all the characters I like will probably be slaughtered.  So much for the bright side.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The show stars Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Charles Dance, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maisie Williams, Aiden Turner, Iain Glen, Rose Leslie, Carice Van Houten, Alfie Allen, Diana Rigg, Natalie Dormer, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, and Isaac Hempstead Wright.  New cast this season include Pedro Pascal, Michiel Huisman, and Indira VarmaGame of Thrones returns on April 6th at 9pm on HBO.

New Posters for GAME OF THRONES Season 4 Remind Us “All Men Must Die”

game-of-thrones-season-4-final-poster-slice

Like the recent trailer, a batch of new posters for the fourth season of Game of Thrones seems bent on preparing us for an onslaught of characters deaths.  The tagline “All Men Must Die” is translation of “Valar morghulis”, which is the High Valyrian taught to Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) by Jaqen H’ghar (Tom Wlaschiha) in season two.  The previous set of posters focused on the Lanisters, and now the rest of the cast is getting their close-ups.  If you’re like me and haven’t read the books, how many of these poor sods are going to make it to season five.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  The show also stars Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Charles Dance, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Aiden Turner, Iain Glen, Rose Leslie, Carice Van Houten, Alfie Allen, Diana Rigg, Natalie Dormer, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, and Isaac Hempstead Wright.  New cast this season include Pedro Pascal, Michiel Huisman and Indira Varma. Game of Thrones returns on April 6th at 9pm on HBO.

There’s about to be a True Detective-sized hole in my Sunday night viewing, but thankfully there won’t be too long of a wait for more quality television.  Game of Thrones returns in April, and so HBO is seriously ramping up the marketing.  Today, they’ve released teasers focusing on the Starks, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), and Tyrion (Peter Dinklage).  There are also character posters for the Lannisters, presumably because they always pay their debts.

Hit the jump to check out the teasers and posters.  The show also stars Lena Headey, Charles Dance, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Alfie Allen, Diana Rigg, Natalie Dormer, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Pedro Pascal, Michiel Huisman, and Indira VarmaGame of Thrones returns April 6th at 9pm.

New Trailer for DOM HEMINGWAY Starring Jude Law, Richard E. Grant, and Emilia Clarke

Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer for Richard Sheperd’s Dom Hemingway.  The film stars Jude Law and revolves around the titular character being released from prison and going to get the hush money he’s owed.  I saw the film at TIFF, thought it was painfully funny, and I can’t wait to see it again.  I would caution against watching this trailer in order to avoid spoiling the jokes, but this trailer is pretty misleading.  It emphasizes the softer, more uplifting aspects of the story, and while that’s a part of the film, it’s almost an afterthought.  It’s there to provide a character arc.  The meat of the picture is Dom being unhinged, offensive, and swearing up a storm.  But this is a green-band trailer, so it’s tougher to sell that stuff.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Richard E. Grant, Demian Bichir, Emilia Clarke, Kerry Condon, Jumayn Hunter, Madalina Ghenea, and Nathan Stewart-JarrettDom Hemingway opens April 4th.

What began as a way to keep my mind off of my upcoming fantasy football playoff matchup has blossomed into a full-on love affair. Over the past week I’ve watched a considerable amount of Parks and Recreation via Netflix and I couldn’t be happier with my time killer of choice. I’ve made it through the first three seasons, all of which have delivered consistent laughs and excellent character moments (Ron’s inability to resist his ex-wife and Leslie’s attempt to stay awake during Pawnee Cares’ diabetes telethon come to mind). I’ll admit that my television viewing is often marred by my own skepticism. When Parks debuted, I watched the first few episodes and wrote it off as cutting and pasting The Office‘s format into a small town, local government setting. These last few days I’ve realized that’s almost exactly what Parks is and yet I couldn’t care less because it’s smart, funny, and endearing at nearly every turn.

My new found love of Parks and Recreation now officially on the record, this week’s Top 5 includes The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug interviews and review, the first trailer for director Gareth EdwardsGodzilla, a recap of Steve’s visit to the set of Paul W.S. Anderson‘s Pompeii, several bits of news out of the Terminator reboot camp, and the first trailer for The Wachowski Siblings‘ latest Jupiter Ascending. What comes next is a brief recap and link to each of the above.

GAME OF THRONES’ Emilia Clarke Set for TERMINATOR as Sarah Connor

by     Posted 315 days ago

emilia-clarke-slice

It looks like Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) has won out for the role of Sarah Connor in Skydance/Annapurna Pictures/Paramount’s Terminator reboot.  The decision was down to Clarke and Brie Larson (Short Term 12) as to who would play the character made famous by Linda Hamilton’s badass performance in the original films.  Clarke would play the mother to John Connor, a hero of the human revolution against the machines; Jason Clarke is currently in talks for the role. (Hey, at least they already have a last name in common.)  Due to the near-twenty-year age difference between the two Clarkes, there’s likely a time-travel element to the reboot, which is due out July 1, 2015.  Hit the jump for more.

Jason Clarke in Talks to Play John Connor in TERMINATOR: GENESIS; Director and Studio at Odds over Actress for Sarah Connor

While we’ve been reporting on who might be playing Sarah Connor in the upcoming Terminator reboot, Terminator: Genesis, we might have an actor for her son…Her much older son.  According to Deadline, Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) is in talks to play John Connor, the robot-killing messiah-figure of the post-apocalyptic future.  As we previously reported, Brie Larson (Short Term 12) and Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) are the frontrunners for Sarah Connor, and since they’re both younger than Clarke by about two decades, there’s clearly some time travelin’ going on.  I really hope that at one point, John Connor yells at his mom, “You’re not the boss of me!” and runs to his room.

Emilia Clarke and Brie Larson Frontrunners for Sarah Connor Role in TERMINATOR Reboot

The casting process continues on the upcoming Terminator reboot, and it appears that the search for Sarah Connor has now been whittled down to two actresses.  We previously reported that Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Brie Larson (21 Jump Street), and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) were among the actresses on the shortlist for the lead role of Sarah Connor, and now Deadline reports that the list has been narrowed down to Clarke and Larson.  Thor: The Dark World helmer Alan Taylor is onboard to direct, and the report notes that Clarke currently has the edge for the part.  Of course, Taylor has worked with Clarke before on Game of Thrones, having directed a number of episodes of the HBO series’ first and second season before landing the Marvel gig.
