Now playing in theaters is director Paul W.S. Anderson’s disaster epic Pompeii.  The film stars Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) as an enslaved Celtic gladiator named Milo who falls in love with a noblewoman (Emily Browning) on the eve of a massive volcanic eruption that destroys Pompeii, an event that also brings him face-to-face with the man (Kiefer Sutherland) who slaughtered his family years earlier.  The film also stars Jared Harris, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Carrie-Anne Moss, Sasha Roiz, Jessica Lucas, and Paz Vega.

At the Los Angeles press day, I landed an exclusive video interview with Browning.  She talked about her reaction to the finished film, how Anderson likes to beat up his actors,if the script changed during production, what it was like being at Sundance for God Helps the Girl, and more.  Hit the jump for what she had to say.

POMPEII Review

Until Titanic was released to record-breaking box office and a slew of awards, director James Cameron was known for straight-up action movies.  Titanic is still an action movie; it just happens to have a cheesy love story in the middle, and its epic sweep and central tragedy connected with audiences.  Two lesser directors attempted to repeat this formula, but with far less success.  Michael Bay attempted it in 2001 with Pearl Harbor and now Paul W.S. Anderson, the director behind Mortal Kombat, Alien vs. Predator, and multiple Resident Evil movies, has tried with Pompeii, a movie that not only apes Titanic, but also Gladiator.  Anderson may recognize the formula and have more weapons of destruction at his disposal, but he neither has the skill or the originality to move Pompeii out of the shadow of giants.

While Emily Browning was front and center kicking ass in Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, for director Paul W.S. Anderson’s disaster epic Pompeii, she’s more on the sidelines, trying to flee a forced marriage to Kiefer Sutherland’s character while also trying to reconnect with her true love, played by Kit Harington.  If it sounds like she’s playing the typical love interest in a big budget disaster film….it’s because she is.  However, during a group interview on the Toronto set earlier this year, Browning told us she gets to “go head to head with Kiefer,” and she’s part of a number of action scenes.  In addition, she talked about filming on the practical sets, what it was like work with Harington, what she learned about ancient Rome, and much more.  Hit the jump for what she had to say.

Anderson’s disaster pic PompeiiKit Harington (Game of Thrones) stars as an enslaved Celtic gladiator named Milo who falls in love with a noblewoman (Emily Browning) on the eve of a massive volcanic eruption that destroys Pompeii, an event that also brings him face-to-face with the man who slaughtered his family years earlier.  These images give us or first look at Kiefer Sutherland as the film’s villain and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Harington’s friend.  The film opens in 3D on February 21, 2014.

Additionally, fresh off the film being named the Best Picture of 2013 by the New York Film Critics Circle, a batch of new images from American Hustle have landed online.  Director David O. New Trailer and Poster for Catherine Hardwicke’s Psycho-Sexual Thriller PLUSH, Starring Emily Browning, Cam Gigandet and Xavier Samuel

The previously-released red-band trailer for Catherine Hardwicke’s Plush was meant as more of a sexy teaser than anything else, but this newer and longer cut actually clues audiences in as to what the film’s actually about.  It’s a tough one to sell since there are so many moving parts. Plush stars Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) as married singer/songwriter Hayley, who begins to fall for her new guitar player, Enzo (Xavier Samuel) after losing her brother/band member to a drug overdose.  Enzo helps to unlock her creativity after the band’s previous release received disastrous critical reviews.  If that weren’t dramatic enough, Hayley also begins to receive the unwanted affections of a dangerous and obsessive fan.

Catherine Hardwicke’s Plush also stars Cam Gigandet, Frances Fisher, Brandon Jay McLaren and Dawn Olivieri.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer and check out the new poster.

FilmDistrict has released the first teaser trailer for Resident Evil and The Three Musketeers director Paul W.S. Anderson’s upcoming Mount Vesuvius actioner Pompeii.  The film stars Kit Harington as an enslaved Celtic gladiator named Milo who falls in love with a noblewoman (Emily Browning) on the eve of a massive volcanic eruption that destroys Pompeii, an event that also brings him face-to-face with the man who slaughtered his family years earlier.  This teaser opens up by quietly playing on the familiar imagery of the Pompeii citizens fossilized in ash, followed by a brief glimpse of footage.  While it’s tough to suss out the character interplay from this teaser, it’s clear that Anderson is not holding back when it comes to volcano carnage (as if you thought he would).  We’ve come a long way since Dante’s Peak and Volcano, folks.

Now that Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) is set in the director’s chair, producers are working to cast the lead in the MGM/Screen Gems remake of Carrie. Vulture reports that a number of actresses have been shortlisted for the part (including Dakota Fanning and Lily Collins) but Chloe Moretz and Haley Bennett (Marley and Me) are apparently the top two candidates. The remake is said to be more faithful to Stephen King’s source material than Brian De Palma’s 1976 film adaptation, and apparently The Descendants star Shailene Woodley has already passed on the lead role. SLEEPING BEAUTY Review

[This is a reprint of my review from the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. Sleeping Beauty opens tomorrow in limited release.]

Julia Leigh’s Sleeping Beauty invites us into a world which unintentionally undoes its own effect. Ordinarily, the sex acts and humiliation would shock us, but we’re asked to accept a reality in which every character passively accepts these depraved circumstances. The characters have perfectly justifiable reasons for their detachment but their ennui carries over to the audience due to Leigh’s sparse approach, seductive visuals, and Emily Browning’s brave but withdrawn performance. We become numb like the film’s protagonist and we disconnect from any emotional attachment.

New Trailer for SLEEPING BEAUTY Starring Emily Browning

A new trailer has gone online for Julia Leigh’s psychosexual drama Sleeping Beauty.  Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) stars as a young woman who becomes a prostitute offering a highly-specified fetish for high-paying clients.  The trailer is a bit misleading as it sets the movie up as more of a thriller with an underlying sense of danger.  As I said in my review, the film numbs you into feeling the ennui and detachment of the protagonist and the cinematography, while gorgeous, is meant to reflect that detachment and beauty of Browning’s character.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Sleeping Beauty opens in limited release on December 2nd.
