NBC has cast the lead in their drama/mystery pilot, Midnight Sun. Julia Stiles will play FBI cult specialist, Leah Kafka, as she leads an investigation into the disappearance of Midnight Sun, a cult-like, communal group living in Alaska. Stiles is joined by Emma Bell (Frozen) who plays Rory, the daughter of the cult’s leader (played by Titus Welliver of Lost). Daniella Pineda (Newlyweds) is also on board. From Deadline, the pilot, written by Lisa Zwerling (Awake), is the first series for Stiles, who has previously done a season-long guest starring arc on Showtime’s Dexter.

In other TV series news, star of Hawaii Five-O Alex O’Loughlin will be taking a short break from the CBS series reboot. Hit the jump to find out why.

FINAL DESTINATION 5 Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 2 years, 300 days ago

Despite the fact that the Final Destination series was supposed to have come to an end with Final Destination 4, here we are again.  New round of kids, same ol’ specter o’ death, always up to some sort of Rube Goldberg-ian shenanigans.  By now, this franchise has established itself as the go-to series for “seeing people killed in inventive, gruesome ways”, and there’s nothing wrong with that.  But Final 4 was genuinely terrible, the first film in the series to make me question whether or not all the scenes that weren’t drenched in viscera were worth suffering through in order to get to the money shots.  Would Final Destination 5 return the franchise to its “not great, not even good, but watchable for the kills” glory?  Find out in my review, after the jump.

FINAL DESTINATION 5 Review

Sometimes you get what you want. If you have been a fan of the previous entries in the Final Destination series, the fifth entry is ready to prove that this franchise hasn’t given in to death just yet. A sequel like this one could feel like more of the same, yet the magnificence of going over the top with ridiculous deaths is half of the charm of the series. People are going to die, in a certain order, but the other appeal is that you never know what is going to get them and when. At least, that should be the setup, and that’s exactly what Final Destination 5 gets right. Director Steven Quale and screenwriter Eric Heisserer embrace the inevitability of the deaths, but don’t telegraph the how. Along the way we are treated to two outstanding set pieces, even more deaths, and pleasing use of 3D where it counts. The film plays as more black comedy than horror, but there are cringe worthy moments that don’t involve the gore. Hit the jump for my full review.

Emma Bell, Nicholas D’Agosto and Tony Todd Interview FINAL DESTINATION 5

Emma Bell, Nicholas D’Agosto, Tony Todd FINAL DESTINATION 5 slice interview

Hitting theaters this Friday is Final Destination 5, a disgusting and uproarious pitch black comedy featuring eye-popping 3D, literally.  I know what you’re thinking, but this movie is really something special. It has an above par cast, a script that smartly skips over the elements fans already know in favor of new angles and way, way above the call of duty direction courtesy of James Cameron protégé and co-director of Aliens of the Deep, Steven Quale.  It’s honestly one of maybe three movies I have ever seen that is worthy of the 3D surcharge.

Last weekend I sat down with the film’s main protagonist, Nicholas D’Agosto, his love interest Emma Bell and franchise mainstay Tony Todd to discuss the film.  During our conversation Todd revealed a bit about the back story of his mysterious Coroner, Mr. Bludworth, Bell and D’Agosto described their history with the franchise and tell us which deaths would be the most horrible to suffer.  Hit the jump to watch.

Emma Bell and Nicholas D'Agosto Interview FINAL DESTINATION 5 slice

With director Steven Quale’s Final Destination 5 opening this weekend, we’ve been provided with 5 clips from the film.  Since we all know what a Final Destination movie is about, I’m not going to try and explain the story.  The important thing to know is the movie was shot in 3D and based on the footage I saw at Comic-Con, it’s really worth paying the extra money to see it in 3D.  Trust me, the footage looked fantastic and 3D is the only way I’d see this movie.  In addition, Hunter covered the press junket yesterday and he told me that the film was great and the 3D added a lot.  Look for his video interviews with the cast in the coming days.  Until then, check out the 2D footage after the jump.

Final Destination 5 stars Emma Bell, Nick D’Agosto, Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, P.J. Byrne, Ellen Wroe, Courtney B. Vance, David Koechner, and Tony Todd.

SAVED BY THE BELL Meets FINAL DESTINATION 5 in Miles Fisher’s “New Romance” Music Video

Final Destination 5 star Miles Fisher’s is also a musician and creator of viral parodies.  He’s blended both for his single “New Romance” where he and his fellow Final Destination 5 stars take on a Saved by the Bell look and promptly get slaughtered in a variety of hilarious ways.  It’s yet another acknowledgement that these movies may not be intended to scare as much as they’re designed for grotesque laughs.  Also, if you ever wanted to see Jessie Spano get destroyed by her own locker, this is the video for you.

Hit the jump to check out the parody.  The film and music video also stars Nicholas D’Agosto, Emma Bell, Arlen Escarpeta, P.J. Byrne, Ellen Wroe, Jacqueline MacInnes-Wood, and David Koechner in the Mr. Belding role.  Final Destination 5 opens in 3D on August 12th.

I’m letting everyone know right out of the gate that I’m cheating a little on this week’s “Top 5.” As you may know by now, every week I do my best to condense all of our weekly coverage into what the editorial staff deems our “Top 5″ stories. This week, I find that we have a plethora of coverage for various titles. As a result, after the jump you’ll find that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, John Carter, and Final Destination 5 all have multiple links. Also included in this week’s installment is The Dark Knight Rises teaser poster and Matt’s take on Netflix’s announced price increase. Hit the jump for brief recaps and links to each.

Emma Bell and Nicholas D’Agosto On Set Interview FINAL DESTINATION 5

Emma Bell and Nicholas D'Agosto Interview FINAL DESTINATION 5 slice

On every Final Destination movie, one of the characters has a vision that everyone is about to die.  As a result, he/she saves everyone…but death eventually finds a way to finish the job.  In Final Destination 5, Nicholas D’Agosto is the one with the vision, and Emma Bell plays his co-worked at a paper factory, and she’s also in love with his character.

Last December I was invited to the set of Final Destination 5 while they were filming in Vancouver.  During a group interview between filming, D’Agosto and Bell talked about making the movie, their characters, working with the rest of the cast, how do they keep things new and fresh when it’s the fifth film in the franchise, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.

New Trailer for FINAL DESTINATION 5

by     Posted 3 years, 103 days ago

final-destination-5-movie-image-slice-01

The new trailer for Final Destination 5 has gone online and as always, every thing can be boiled down to “Go to mundane location, bad things happen.”  The Final Destination franchise preys on our fears that we could die from a freak accident at any time.  I would love to see the Final Destination film where someone escapes the big accident at the beginning and then instead of the reaper getting him or her with a Rube Goldberg project of death, the person just dies from a long, protracted illness.  At least this one kind of raises an interesting moral quandary about whether or not you would kill an innocent person if it ensured your own survival.  And really, what would a Final Destination movie be without an arbitrary new rule that was never mentioned in the previous entries?

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Final Destination 5 opens in 3D on August 12th.

First Trailer and Poster for FINAL DESTINATION 5

The first trailer and poster for Final Destination 5 have gone online.  This time the big disaster is on a suspension bridge.  As always, those who don’t have the courtesy to die in giant disasters get hunted down by the grim reaper and eliminated in gruesome, Rube Goldberg-projects of doom.  In a hint that the series may be running out of creative ways to off its characters, Final Destination 5 preys on our fears of LASIK and acupuncture.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  Final Destination 5 stars Emma Bell, Nick D’Agosto, Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, P.J. Byrne, Ellen Wroe, Courtney B. Vance, David Koechner, and Tony Todd.  The film opens in 3D on August 26th.

FROZEN Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 4 years, 5 days ago

The simple concept, well executed: Something of a holy grail for the indie auteur and something that Adam Green (Hatchet) managed to pull off with Frozen.

Too-handsome Dan (Kevin Zegers), his too-sweet-and-innocent girlfriend Parker (Emma Bell) and lifelong/douchey best friend Joe (Shawn Ashmore – who played Iceman in the X-Men movies (and whom you can go ahead and make your own jokes regarding that)) are low on cash and visiting a rundown New England ski resort.  Joe holds some resentment toward the new couple but that certainly won’t be the focus of character drama later, so don’t worry about it. The handsome/douchey guys convince Parker to get them onto the ski lift for free and, through a surprisingly plausible series of events, the trio end up trapped on the ski lift in the dead of night, fifty feet in the air and with the ski lodge closed for the next five days.

Oh, and there are wolves.  So, they’re fucked. Hit the jump for more:

New Line/Warner Bros. has announced filming is underway in Vancouver on director Steve Quale’s Final Destination 5.  The 3D film stars Emma Bell (Frozen, The Walking Dead) Nick D’Agosto (Fired Up!, Heroes), Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, P.J. Byrne, Ellen Wroe, Courtney B. Vance, David Koechner and Final Destination franchise icon Tony Todd.

The studio has also sent out the first synopsis and it reads like every Final Destination movie:

In this fifth installment, Death is just as omnipresent as ever, and is unleashed after one man’s premonition saves a group of coworkers from a terrifying suspension bridge collapse. But this group of unsuspecting souls was never supposed to survive, and, in a terrifying race against time, the ill-fated group frantically tries to discover a way to escape Death’s sinister agenda.

AMC has released some new images from their upcoming show The Walking Dead.  While the show doesn’t premiere until October, AMC has been doing a great job releasing new images and videos almost every week.

I got to check out the footage they premiered at this year’s Comic-Con and can tell you The Walking Dead looks like something really special and I couldn’t believe what they were able to pull off in the footage.  If you’re a zombie fan, this is a must see show.  The only negative thing I can say about The Walking Dead is the first season is only six episodes, which means they better get started on season two asap!  Hit the jump for all the images that have been released so far.

SDCC 2010: THE WALKING DEAD Roundtable

Earlier in the day, the throngs of people who flooded Room 6BCD were treated to a panel discussion and trailer for AMC’s upcoming series The Walking Dead, based on the comic book by Robert Kirkman.  Following, I had the chance to sit down with writer/director/executive producer Frank Darabont, executive producer Gale Anne Hurd, special effects/makeup designer Greg Nicotero and stars Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes), Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori Grimes), Jon Bernthal (Shane Walsh), Laurie Holden (Andrea), and Emma Bell (Amy).

Their excitement for this project was evident, despite having travelled from shooting and low on sleep.  The series is shooting in Atlanta (the first indication of the desire to stay true to the source material).  They are about to go into shooting episode five of the first season’s six episodes.  Hit the jump to hear what they had to say.
