Friday Box Office: SNITCH Squeaks by IDENTITY THIEF on Friday; Comedy Expected To Prevail This Weekend

A disappointing month will come to a disappointing end this weekend as the box office offers up yet another underwhelming frame. How underwhelming? While last year gave us a surprisingly-strong debut in Act of Valor ($24.4 million), not one title is expected to reach $15 million by Oscar Sunday. Among new releases, Snitch is in the best shape. The action flick starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson won a narrow victory on Friday: taking in an estimated $4.14 million from 2,511 locations. Snitch should see a $12 million debut, though that won’t be enough to beat Identity Thief. The comedy holdover took in $4.1 million on Friday, but is expected to earn $13 million over its third weekend in theatres. Debuting in fourth place, Dark Skies earned an estimated $3 million from 2,313 locations. The extraterrestrial-thriller is projected to make $8.4 million through Oscar Sunday, putting it behind holdovers like Safe Haven, Escape from Planet Earth and A Good Day to Die Hard. We’ll have full details tomorrow.

  Title Friday Total
1.   Snitch $4,140,000 $4.1
2.   Identity Thief $4,100,000 $83.7
3.   Safe Haven $3,520,000 $40.9
4.   Dark Skies $3,087,000 $3
5.   A Good Day to Die Hard $2,800,000 $44.6

Friday Box Office: DIE HARD and SAFE HAVEN Battle It Out for Number One with $7.2 Million and $7.1 Million; BEAUTIFUL CREATURES Sinks

by     Posted 1 year, 257 days ago

good day to die hard bruce willis

The holiday weekend is off and running at the box office, and it’s a battle of brawn over sap as A Good Day to Die Hard and Safe Haven are neck-and-neck for the top spot.  The fifth entry in the Die Hard franchise netted near-universal negative reviews, and now the pic is performing slightly under expectations at the box office as the actioner took in an estimated $7.2 million on Friday to add to its $8.2 million take on Valentine’s Day Thursday.  Nipping at Die Hard’s heels is the Nicholas Sparks adaptation Safe Haven, which scored an estimated $7.1 million on Friday to combine with its $8.8 million gross on Thursday.  Warner Bros.’ YA adaptation Beautiful Creatures, however, fell flat with a paltry $2.3 million on Friday that puts it in the number 6 slot overall and on track for a very low $11.5 million weekend.  All of this despite the fact that Beautiful Creatures garnered considerably more positive reviews than both Die Hard and Safe Haven.  We’ll have full details tomorrow.

  Title Friday Total
1. A Good Day to Die Hard $7,250,000 $15.4
2. Safe Haven $7,150,000 $15.9
3. Identity Thief $6,500,000 $53.7
4. Escape from Planet Earth $3,702,000 $3.7
5. Warm Bodies $2,600,000 $43.8

William Shatner on What It Would Take for Him to Guest Star on THE BIG BANG THEORY

While I’ve been able to interview a number of amazing people while working for Collider, last weekend I finally talked to one of my favorite childhood heroes: William Shatner.  Like many of you, I grew up watching Star Trek.  Sitting in my grandmother’s living room and watching the original episodes with my father is actually one of my earliest memories, and it will always be one of the biggest influences on why I grew up being a nerd.  Which I am very proud of.  So when I was offered an extended video interview with Shatner for the animated feature, Escape from Planet Earth, I jumped at the chance.  Thankfully, he was in a great mood and we talked about a wide variety of subjects.   As I sit here editing the interview for posting tomorrow, I decided to offer a small tease of what’s to come.

If you watch The Big Bang Theory, you know many Star Trek actors (Leonard Nimoy, Wil Wheaton, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton) have made guest appearances on the show.   When I put on Twitter that I’d be talking to Shatner, a few of you asked if he’d be willing to also guest star on the CBS sitcom.  He told me he’s been asked a few times but he didn’t want to go on the show.  However, it sounds like he’s warming to the idea, because he said “if they came up with a really good reason for being on there…a really funny reason…I would do it.”  Hit the jump to watch and look for the full interview tomorrow.

At a roundtable interview at the film’s press day last week, Vergara talked about her character, Gabby Babblebrock, the hot and spicy anchor for BNN News.  She discussed why she accepted the fun role on short notice, how the recording experience compared to her previous work in Happy Feet Two and The Smurfs, why she wasn’t surprised by the film’s large Latino cast, what she likes best about shooting Modern Family, how she finds time to keep up with her large Twitter following, indulging in beignets at Café du Monde in New Orleans’ French Quarter during the recent Super Bowl, and starring opposite Danny Trejo in the upcoming Machete Kills.  Hit the jump to read more.
