SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR Review

In 2005, Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller‘s Sin City was an interesting novelty.  The directors were able to transfer Miller’s visually distinct comics to the screen through the heavy use of CGI.  Not adapt; transfer.  The comic was used as a storyboard, and the directors filled in the gaps by casting a bunch of recognizable actors to play the roles.  For people who argue that adaptations should never stray from the source material, 2005′s Sin City was perfect.  Although the novelty has run its course, Rodriguez and Miller are back nine years later with Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, but the visual panache now feels like a crutch while also diminishing any authentic noir vibe the movie occasionally tries to convey.  Although the sequel is occasionally enjoyable thanks to the actors who are in on the exaggerated tone, the film feels like it was made by a couple of teenagers who mistake whores for dames, sadists for toughs guys, and style for charm.

Magnolia Pictures has released a new White Bird in a Blizzard trailer for director Gregg Araki’s (Kaboom) sexually charged drama.  Based on the Laura Kasichke novel of the same name, the story takes place in the 1980s and stars Shailene Woodley as a young woman relishing her newfound sexuality whose life is upended when her beautiful, enigmatic mother (Eva Green) suddenly goes missing.  Green has made a habit lately of turning in regularly scene-stealing work, and it appears that she tackles another slightly unhinged character here while Woodley displays her swell ability to lay out her emotions onscreen.

Nearly a decade after the first film, co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller have reunited to bring the visually stunning Sin City graphic novels back to the screen for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.  In a town where murderers reign and the desperate want vengeance, their paths cross at the famous Kadie’s Club Pecos, where Nancy Callahan (Jessica Alba) still dances while mourning the loss of her love, John Hartigan (Bruce Willis).  With Marv (Mickey Rourke) in the center of the carnage, a cocky young gambler named Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) takes on the villainous Senator Roark (Powers Boothe), and Dwight McCarthy (Josh Brolin) is battles with the woman of his dreams and nightmares, Ava Lord (Eva Green).

During a conference at the film’s press day, actors Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Eva Green talked about living in Sin City, with this dialogue and these extremes, going into the mind of Frank Miller, trickiest scenes, playing a Rodriguez bad-ass, the motives of the women in Sin City, working in Austin at Troublemaker Studios, working with Christopher Lloyd, feeling comfortable with Nancy’s swagger, the sex and sexuality of the story, and why Nancy is a stripper who never actually takes her clothes off.  Also there, Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller discussed getting even closer to the comics this time around, what the 3D added, the process of lighting the film, what their collaboration has meant to each other, and how they’d like to go into production on a third film, right away.  Check out what they had to say after the jump.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR Red-Band Trailer Goes Heavy on Stylization, Light on Everything Else

Dimension Films has released the new full-length Sin City: A Dame to Kill For red-band trailer that premiered at the San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend.  And it doesn’t seem like directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller (read our SDCC interview) have done anything new for the sequel.  The film stars Josh Brolin as the physically altered Dwight (played by Clive Owen in the first film), who is hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord (Eva Green), and then watches his life go straight to hell.  Also going straight to hell is my interest in this movie.  I enjoyed the first film but felt that even this trailer was too much time spent back in the arbitrarily stylized world.  Nothing had any impact.  The only thing this film could do to surprise me is fashion a tight, engaging narrative.

Hit the jump to watch the full-length Sin City: A Dame to Kill For red-band trailer.  The film also stars Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis, Powers Booth, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Dennis HaysbertChristopher MeloniJeremy PivenRay LiottaJuno Temple, Stacy Keach, and Julia Garner.  Sin City: A Dame to Kill For opens on August 22nd.

300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 37 days ago

300-rise-of-an-empire-blu-ray-review

As the supplements suggest, 300: Rise of an Empire is not a straight sequel to Frank Miller and Zack Snyder’s 300, as it can also be described as a prequel, sidequel, and probably some other words that have been invented to describe modern spin-off films that don’t pick up after the last film ended.  Rise of an Empire is meant to be like a glove to the first film, as it surrounds the original narrative with new material.  The results are a film that doesn’t totally work on its own terms, but does offer a delicious scene-stealing performance from Eva Green.  My 300: Rise of an Empire Blu-ray review follows after the jump.

New Full-Length SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR Trailer Features the Return of Mickey Rourke’s Marv

Dimension Films has released a new full-length Sin City: A Dame to Kill For for directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s sequel.  The film stars Josh Brolin as the physically altered Dwight (played by Clive Owen in the first film), who is hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord (Eva Green), and then watches his life go straight to hell.  This trailer focuses heavily on the returning members of the cast, specifically Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, and Bruce Willis.  There’s plenty of action and stylized visuals on display, but even after a number of trailers, images, posters, etc. I’m still having troubling drumming up anything but indifference towards the follow-up.  It looks fine, but 2006 was a very long time ago.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR – See the New-and-Improved Eva Green Poster Approved by the MPAA

Remember those puzzles where two images are laid side by side and you have to spot the differences?  Well, that’s kind of what the new Sin City: A Dame to Kill For posters featuring Eva Green are like, just with more boobs.  If you’re just getting caught up on this little controversy, it all started when the MPAA rejected a risque poster for The Weinstein Company film.  Green herself then responded to the non-news story in full support of the film and the poster.  The latest (and likely last) news on this issue is that the MPAA has approved a slightly photoshopped poster that’s more to their liking.

Eva Green Comments on Her Controversial SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR Poster, Saying It’s “A Lot of Noise for Nothing”

Remember when we shared this poster for Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For featuring Eva Green in an outfit too scandalous for the MPAA?  Well now Green has responded to the manufactured controversy surrounding The Weinstein Company’s picture and poster.  In short?  “A lot of noise for nothing.”  Ms. Green certainly isn’t shy about showing off her body, and believes there’s plenty more about the movie business that’s in poorer taste.

PENNY DREADFUL Renewed for Bigger Season 2

penny-dreadful-season-2-renewed

Showtime has ordered Penny Dreadful season 2, renewing creator John Logan’s (Skyfall) psychosexual horror series for another go-around, and even expanding the series to a bigger episode count.  The drama is currently in the midst of its eight-episode first season, but for season two Showtime has upped that number to 10 episodes in total.  The series has garnered high praise from critics and solid ratings, counting our own TV expert Allison Keene as one of its fans.  For those unfamiliar, the series stars Eva Green and Timothy Dalton and reimagines some of literature’s iconic figures such as Frankenstein, Dorian Grey, and a number of characters from Dracula, bringing them all together in Victorian London.  I haven’t had a chance to catch the show just yet, but it’s high on my to-do list.

Hit the jump to read the full press release, and sound off in the comments with your thoughts on the first season thus far.  Penny Dreadful airs on Sundays on Showtime.

New SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR Poster Featuring “Too Much Boob” from Eva Green

If you’re more interested in Eva Green’s boobs than the manufactured controversy surrounding their appearance on a new poster for Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, then go ahead and hit the jump now.  Other recently released posters for the sequel didn’t get disapproved for “too much crotch” or “too much scowling”, so what’s the problem here?  Well, the MPAA didn’t like this version due to “nudity — curve of under breast and dark nipple/areola circle visible through sheer gown.”  Pique your interest?  That’s The Weinstein Company’s plan, since they’re the winners of this silly game; though the real winners are you, the viewers, who get to glance at Green’s magnificence in poster form.

Well here’s a new one.  In lieu of clips or traditional images, The Weinstein Company has released a batch of “animated images” (ie. gifs) from directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.  The film stars Josh Brolin as the physically altered Dwight (played by Clive Owen in the first film), who is hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord (Eva Green), and then watches his life go straight to hell.  I’m curious to see if the audience for a Sin City sequel is still out there nearly a decade after the first film was released, especially since technology has evolved so drastically since the groundbreaking graphic novel adaptation.

Trailer for the Western Drama THE SALVATION Starring Mads Mikkelsen and Eva Green

by     Posted 111 days ago

the-salvation-mads-mikkelsen-slice

I like Mads Mikkelsen, and I think slowly and surely he’s getting the widespread recognition he deserves while still staying true to an eclectic collection of work.  He turns in excellent performances week after week on Hannibal but also starred in the Oscar-nominated drama The Hunt as a falsely-accused child molester.  Yesterday, a trailer for the western drama The Salvation went online, and stars Mikkelsen as a Danish immigrant trying to build a life in the 1870s America.  The story centers on a man whose family is brutally murdered, and he goes out for violent retribution.  However, his quest for revenge triggers retaliation from the friends and families of his enemies.  It looks like captivating stuff, and having Eva Green on board to co-star only makes the movie look better.

Hit the jump to check out The Salvation trailer.  The film will premiere as part of the Midnight Screenings program at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
