There are a lot of must-see films for me at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, and hovering around the top of the list is Rodrigo Garcia‘s Last Days in the Desert.  The plot takes place during Jesus’ forty days in the desert, but here’s the twist—Ewan McGregor is playing both Jesus and the Devil, and Jesus is tested by the Devil when confronted by the fate of a family in crisis.  We previously saw McGregor as Jesus, and now we have images of the family—Tye Sheridan (Mud) as “The Boy”,  Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones) as “The Father”, and Ayelet Zurer (Man of Steel) as “The Mother”.

Hit the jump to check out the new Last Days in the Desert images.  The film will make its world premiere on January 25th at 6:30pm in the Eccles Theater.

While absent from all of the big Sundance updates we were posting earlier this week, director Rodrigo Garcia‘s new film Last Days In the Desert will indeed be playing the festival next month.  Starring Ewan McGregor as Jesus, this film is bound to pick up the usual dust that accompanies movies that address this topic without self-identifying as “faith based.”  What looks unimpeachable, however,  is the visual aesthetic of the film, which was shot by Emmanuel Lubezki.

Hit the jump for a better look at the Last Days In the Desert image of Ewan McGregor as Jesus.  The film also stars Tye Sheridan, Ciarán Hinds, and Ayelet Zurer.  It premieres on January 25th at 6:30PM at the Eccles Theater as part of Sundance 2015.

SON OF A GUN Trailer and Poster: Ewan McGregor and Brenton Thwaites Get into a Criminal Partnership and Have a Falling Out

A24 has released the Son of a Gun trailer and poster.  The Australian thriller follows JR (Brenton Thwaites), a young man who becomes the apprentice of a calculating crime boss (Ewan McGregor) when they bond on a prison break, but their relationship becomes jeopardized over a heist and a woman (Alicia Vikander).  I was somewhat interested in the film, but this trailer saved me the time because it doesn’t play like a trailer as much as a condensed version of the entire movie.  It’s almost impressive to see all three acts play out in the span of less than two minutes.

Hit the jump to check out the Son of a Gun trailer and poster.  The film hits DirecTV on December 11th and will be in theaters in mid-January 2015.

New MORTDECAI Trailer and Poster: Johnny Depp Attempts to Save the World for Queen, Country, Travel and Living Expenses, and Reasonable Overhead

mortdecai-trailer-poster

Lionsgage has released a new Mortdecai trailer and poster, and I continue to be charmed by this film.  The film stars Johnny Depp as the roguish Charlie Mortdecai, an art dealer who finds himself in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.  This new trailer also fills us in on the supporting characters including Mortdecai’s wife (Gwyneth Paltrow), handler (Ewan McGregor), Jock Strapp (Paul Bettany, and yes, the character name is a bit much), and a potential mistress (Olivia Munn).  I know Depp has gone from being an exciting actor to self-parody, but he looks like he’s having a blast with the character, and hopefully that enthusiasm will carry over to the rest of the picture.

Rumor: Oscar Isaac, Matthew McConaughey, Ewan McGregor, Jake Gyllenhaal and More on Marvel’s Short List for DOCTOR STRANGE

doctor-strange-casting-slice

There have been a lot of Doctor Strange casting rumors over the last few months, but now there’s a new report claiming that Marvel is still assessing a short list and that that short list currently includes Jared Leto, Oscar Isaac, Matthew McConaughey, Ewan McGregor, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ethan Hawke.

Per usual, nothing is official and we must treat this as a rumor, but after those negotiations with Joaquin Phoenix broke down, it makes sense for the studio to take a step back and assess the other options.  Hit the jump for additional details on each one.

Rumor: Ewan McGregor Could Be DOCTOR STRANGE

Ah, the casting saga of Doctor Strange continues.  I’m sure whoever director Scott Derrickson casts in the role will be great, but it’s interesting to see the wide breadth of names being mentioned for the part.  Derrickson and Marvel had been dancing with Joaquin Phoenix for a while before he dropped out and a lot of the subsequent online fan casting has mentioned names like Keanu Reeves and Ethan Hawke.

One of the names those fan casters haven’t brought up is Ewan McGregor, but here he is suddenly in the middle of the conversation.  And I don’t even necessarily think he’d be a bad choice.  He may not look the part on the surface, but there’s this thing he can do called “acting” that I’m sure could smooth everything over.  Hit the jump for more on Ewan McGregor potentially playing Doctor Strange.

New MORTDECAI Posters Feature Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Olivia Munn, Ewan McGregor, and Moustaches

Lionsgate has released four Mortdecai character posters online, and all of them feature the title character’s dapper facial hair.  The film stars Johnny Depp as the roguish Charlie Mortdecai, an art dealer who finds himself in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold (everyone wants Nazi gold these days).  My hope for Mortdecai is that it just manages to be a fun romp rather than a reminder of how hard Depp tries to do wacky characters.

First SON OF A GUN Clip: Brenton Thwaites Teaches Ewan McGregor Chess in Prison

Entertainment One has released the first Son of a Gun clip.  The Australian thriller follows a young man (Brenton Thwaites) who becomes the apprentice of a calculating crime boss (Ewan McGregor).  The clip shows what looks like the meet-cute between the two in prison, where the apprentice walks by and shows the boss where he went wrong in his chess game.  McGregor is more intimidating than I expected.

Alicia Vikander, Jacek Koman, Matt Nable, and Tom Budge also star in the feature directorial debut of Julius Avery.  There is no U.S. release date yet, but Son of a Gun opens October 14 in Australia.  Watch the Son of a Gun clip after the break.

First MORDECAI Trailer Has Johnny Depp as a Debonair Rapscallion alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Goldblum, and Ewan McGregor

Lionsgate has released the first Mortdecai trailer, and it looks rather amusing.  The film stars Johnny Depp as the roguish Charlie Mortdecai, an art dealer who finds himself in a race to recover a stole painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.  None of those plot details are mentioned in this trailer.  Instead, it quickly conveys the goofy character, and even though this is yet another oddball/eccentric part for Depp, at least it comes off as quite entertaining.

First SON OF A GUN Images and Poster Featuring Ewan McGregor and Brenton Thwaites in the Aussie Crime Thriller

Just ahead of its debut as the Cinefest Oz’s opener, the first Son of a Gun images have landed online.  Julius Avery‘s directorial debut stars Brenton Thwaites (The Giver) as JR, a young man who becomes a protégé of Australia’s most notorious criminal Brendan Lynch (Ewan McGregor).  “Locked up for a minor crime, JR quickly learns the harsh realities of prison life. There is no survival guide. Keep your head down, do your time, get out. Protection – if you can get it – is paramount.”  These images don’t look like they show much of the lockup, but I’m still intrigued by the premise, and hopefully we’ll get to see the film in the U.S. soon.

First MILES AHEAD Image Features Don Cheadle as Miles Davis

by     Posted 166 days ago

miles-ahead-image

Don Cheadle has been working on his Miles Davis film, Miles Ahead, for so many years now that his dedication to the project is readily apparent. The film has cycled through directors and interest from studios and cable networks through its development process, but Cheadle’s admirable steadfast desire to not make this a standard biopic. You know, those cradle to grave stories that are always made about famous people (think Ray and Walk The Line and then remember how fantastically that formula was skewered in Walk Hard).

Instead, Miles Ahead focuses on one period of Miles Davis’ life – his reemergence after five years of artistic exile, commonly known as his “silent period.” Cheadle will also direct the film starring Ewan McGregor, Michael Stuhlbarg and Emayatzy Corinealdi. Head below for the first Miles Ahead image.

We’ve got a couple of casting stories to address today.  First up, it was announced that Ewan McGregor will lead the cast of writer/director Rodrigo Garcia’s (Albert Nobbs) new drama Last Days in the Desert.  McGregor will be joined by Ciaran Hinds (Harry Potter), Ayelet Zurer (Man of Steel), and the young Tye Sheridan (Mud) in the pic, which follows a holy man and a demon on a journey through the desert.  McGregor will play both the holy man and the demon, and the story finds the former encountering a family struggling to survive in the harsh environment that forces the man to confront his own fate.  Production is currently underway in the Southern California desert with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (Gravity, The Tree of Life) lensing the film.

Revisionist Western JANE GOT A GUN Set for August 29, 2014; Stars Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton, and Ewan McGregor

by     Posted 1 year, 25 days ago

For cinephiles, the behind-the-scenes drama on the revisionist western Jane Got a Gun will overshadow the film until at least the first trailer.  Natalie Portman stars as a woman who must call on an ex-lover to help defend her farm and injured outlaw husband from the husband’s gang.  Michael Fassbender was going to play the ex-lover and Joel Edgerton was to play the gang leader.  Then Fassbender left because of a scheduling conflict, Edgerton moved to the ex-lover role, and Jude Law signed on to play the villain.  Then matters got crazier when director Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk about Kevin) unexpectedly dropped out on the first day of shooting, and the production scrambled for a replacement.  They got Gavin O’Connor (Warrior), but then Law left because he wanted to work with Ramsay.  Bradley Cooper came on to play the villain, then he left, and finally the production landed on Ewan McGregor.

It’s impressive that the production survived all of this hullaballoo, and The Wrap reports the movie will be released on August 29, 2014.  The light competition is the horror film Jessabelle, and the thriller The Loft, which has been on the shelf for well over a year.
