Mike Judge is a great comic observer. It’s apparent from most of his work that he likes to record how humans interact, how they bounce off the other’s peculiarities, and he has a special fondness for workplace absurdities. Judge’s 2009 film Extract – which follows the owner (Jason Bateman) of a Vanilla extract bottling plant as he struggles with selling his company and a wife that has become frigid – is all about the small details. Though the film never amounts to much, there are a number of wry, memorable moments to savor from the movie. My review of Extract after the jump.

There are two sides to Mike Judge in Hollywood. There’s the TV star, who took a ton of heat but came out as one of the most daring and biting voices of satire in the 1990′s with Beavis and Butthead, and the successful maistream animator with a thirteen season run of the folksy and engaging King of the Hill. Then there’s the film director, who was cajoled into the theatrical Beavis and Butthead Do America, but has worked in live action ever since. He made two films for 20th Century Fox to see them abandoned theatrically, only for both 1999′s Office Space and 2006′s Idiocracy to now be regaled as cult classics. His most recent film, 2009′s Extract did not set the film world afire (Extract
is now available on DVD and Blu-ray), but it showed a less biting Judge doing what he does best: everyday life comedy. Perhaps that’s why it wasn’t abandoned, but it’s also a film that may find more of an audience on home video. My dinner with Mike Judge after the jump.

The summer movie season is at an end and, as usual, it is going out with a whimper instead of a bang. Despite the fact that the studios gave audiences three fresh choices at the multiplex, the film that eked out the best numbers as of Sunday continued to be last weekend’s 3D horror-hit “The Final Destination”… sick of hearing me talk about those “higher ticket prices” yet? Though only five thousand dollars separated “Destination” and “All About Steve” on Friday, the fact that the Sandra Bullock/Bradley Cooper comedy received some of the worst reviews of the summer (a feat in itself) helped that gap widen as the weekend progressed. Neither of our other newcomers, “Gamer” and “Extract”, built any real momentum which left “Steve” looking a bit like a hit… standards are a lot lower on Labor Day.

“Extract” is worth seeing for a multitude of reasons. It’s one of the funniest movies of the year, it’s Mike Judge’s best film to date, it’s a comedy that has an enjoyable subtext, and there isn’t a single comic performer who doesn’t get a chance to shine, no matter how big their character’s part or the actor’s public recognition. But the best reason is that you’re watching a comic legend in the making as Jason Bateman gives his finest performance to date. That’s saying something not only because of his work on “Arrested Development” but in every film he’s managed to steal no matter how little screen-time he had.

When Mila Kunis was on “That 70′s Show”, I never thought she’d make the transition to movie star. But over the past few years, that’s exactly what she’s done with starring roles in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, “Max Payne”, “The Book of Eli”, and writer-director Mike Judge’s new film “Extract”. In “Extract”, Mila plays the femme fatale role, and she’s great.
Anyway, I recently participated in a roundtable interview with Mila and she talked about her career, making “Extract”, “Family Guy”, “Black Swan”, Comic-Con, “Date Night”, college, and a lot more. It’s a great interview so take a look. And remember, “Extract” opens this weekend and you all need to go see it!

If you loved “Office Space” and “Idiocracy”, you must be beyond excited for this Friday, as that’s the day writer-director Mike Judge’s third feature “Extract” arrives in theaters! So to help promote the film, I recently participated in a roundtable interview with Jason Bateman and he talked about making the film, what he has coming up, and a lot more.
In the film, Jason plays the owner of an Extract factory and a freak workplace accident sets in motion a series of disasters that put his business and personal life in jeopardy. Trust me, the film is very funny and you should definitely check it out this weekend. Read what he had to say after the jump. It’s a great interview.

If you’re a fan of Mike Judge (“Office Space”, “Idiocracy”, “King of the Hill”, “Beavis and Butt-head”), you are absolutely going to love the interview I did with this talented writer/director for his new movie “Extract”. That’s because when I sat down for an extended interview last week, we not only discussed his new film and how he managed to get it made with complete artistic control, but what exactly happened on “Office Space” and why did “Idiocracy” not get promoted when it was released back in 2006. While I say you’re about to watch a great interview a lot…this interview with Mike Judge is one of the best I’ve ever done on Collider because Mike was so open and honest about what happened on his previous movies.
I really mean it when I say, if you’re a fan of “Office Space”, “Idiocracy”, or just a fan of Mike Judge, make the time and watch this interview! Of course the reason I got to speak with Mike is for his new movie “Extract”, so make sure you see it this weekend as it’s really funny and if it does well…it could lead to more movies! Here’s the interview. I promise you’ll love it.

Wow. That headline should be enough. I don’t want to spoil any of this clip because it’s such a trip to go back and see these characters again and remember why we loved them so much in the first place. It’s going to make you want to watch the whole series on DVD, which is good since you can buy them online.
In a recent interview Steve did with Mike Judge, he said he always wants to leave the door open for Beavis and Butt-head and now they’ve returned to promote Judge’s excellent new comedy “Extract” which comes out this Friday and stars Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig, and Ben Affleck. Okay, I’m done. Hit the jump and watch the clip.

Earlier today I got to participate in a roundtable interview with Mila Kunis as she’s out promoting Mike Judge’s new film “Extract”. While I’ll have a complete transcript closer to release, since I got her to talk about Darren Aronfsky’s “Black Swan”, I figured you might want to read those comments right now.
As you might have already heard, the rumor is Mila and Natalie Portman have “aggressive sex” in “Black Swan”. While she wouldn’t confirm or deny the story, she did talk about what she’s doing to train for the role and how she just got a new re-write last weekend. Read exactly what she said after the jump:

If you’re a fan of “Office Space”, “Idiocracy”, “King of the Hill” and “Beavis and Butt-head”, September 4th should be marked on your calendar as a holiday. That’s because writer/director Mike Judge has a new movie coming out that weekend and it’s called “Extract”! So to help promote the film, I’ve been provided with 6 clips and they’re after the jump. And unlike some clips that are only twenty and thirty seconds, some of these are close to two minutes so you get to see entire scenes. While some like to be spoiler free, if you want a taste of “Extract” right now, you’re going to enjoy these clips so take a look:

While I post plenty of DVD giveaways on Collider, today I’m posting a contest that’s at a whole other level. That’s because the great folks at Miramax have given me 5 pairs of tickets to the Los Angeles premiere of Mike Judge’s new movie “Extract”! So if you’re interested in attending the new movie from the director or “Office Space” and “Idiocracy”, after the jump is the info on how to enter.

Yesterday we debuted the character poster for Jason Bateman in Mike Judge’s upcoming film, “Extract”. Sadly, our taunting of other sites and lording this victory over them must cease not because they asked us to, but because all four posters were released even though we tried to convince Miramax that all the other sites were calling them names behind their back.
I have to say I like them all and their taglines are amusing, but the one for Mila Kunis is definitely a pin-up. I mean for the graphic design, you pervert. Of course she’s very attractive. You’re gross. Shut up.
Check out all four posters below. “Extract” hits theatres September 4th.

Tonight, Collider was fortunate enough to not only nab one of the four character posters for Mike Judge’s upcoming film “Extract”, but we have the one with the film’s star, “Jason Bateman” and therefore it is automatically the best. The only poster that could be better is if they had one for J.K. Simmons. Sadly, Simmons’ name isn’t even mentioned on this poster but that’s okay because you know where J.K. Simmons is? He’s in our hearts…where he belongs.
But I still like this one especially since it looks like Bateman is staring up at the “100% Mike Judge” seal of approval like it punched him in the face. We’ll show off all four characters posters tomorrow, but for now we hope you enjoy this one. Also, sometime in the next few weeks we’ll be giving away tickets for the film’s LA premiere so be on the look out for that.
Check out the new poster below. “Extract” hits theatres on September 4th.

A lot of people in HALL H on Saturday were probably there for the “Iron Man 2″ footage. It wasn’t a bad day before “Iron Man 2″. There was the “Lost” panel which I hear was hilarious (I went last year and while it was a lot of fun, they won’t tell you a single thing; plus, I got my own slice of “Lost” glory when I went to Flynn’s Arcade on Friday night…). There was also “Zombieland” (looks great) and “2012″ (looks bad). And then there was Mike Judge’s “Extract”, his newest film that, in a shocking turn of events, is actually getting a real marketing campaign and everything. Not only was their the nut-smash reaction shots that I mentioned in my piece about Preview Night, but they had brought Judge and stars Jason Bateman (a first-time Comic-Con attendee) and Mila Kunis (whose practically a Comic-Con veteran at this point by attending for “Max Payne” last year and “The Book of Eli”, “Extract” and “Family Guy” this year) and they play to a packed Hall H to show off their film.
Did they succeed? I’d say so. Hit the jump to find out why I think that “Extract” is going to make it and how I ended up speaking in front of over 6,000 people.

If you want a taste of the insanity you’ll be drinking down over the next four days, you can get a preview of that at “Preview Night”. Of course, that’s not what they intend to preview as folks being lining up everywhere to nab the latest swag. Sometimes they’re not even lining up for anything good (like the folks who waited for a “District 9″ poster and some “Zombieland” hand-sanitizer; one of the booth babes at the Sony booth just handed me the admittedly-cool “District 9″ poster when I walked by); although sometimes they were lining up for great stuff like the “Extract” booth where you could get a chance to appear on the “Extract” DVD and show off what you would look like if you got hit in the balls (I have no idea how women participated in that). [CLARIFICATION: I was unclear when talking about the “Extract” DVD. What I meant was that when the film hits DVD after its theatrical release, this material may be on there. The film opens in theatres on September 4th and its panel will be on Saturday in Hall H from 1:30 to 2:30.
Check out my photos and comments after the jump. I’ll be posting photos throughout the Con so check back every day (you should be checking back anyway as we’re going to have a ridiculous amount of coverage).
