FIREFLY Writer-Producer Tim Minear Toys with Fans’ Emotions; Raises Possibility of Limited Series

by     Posted 62 days ago

Firefly fans always want more. I suspect that even if the entire Serenity crew dies, nothing short of a complete collapse in quality will deter fans from wanting the short-lived show to come back in any way possible, and damn the logistics of making that happen. Enter writer-producer Tim Minear to tease the possibility of a return, specifically in the form of a limited series. Minear noted that shows like American Horror Story and Sherlock have upended the traditional form of TV series, so why not Firefly?

Collider Gift Guide 2013: What to Receive and Where to Give

by     Posted 139 days ago

Black Friday is almost here, and like most people who love a good deal, you’ve mapped out your plan of attack (make sure this attack doesn’t involve trampling).  You know what you want, where to get it, and Thanksgiving dinner be damned, you’re going to camp out in front of a store or in front of your computer.  While we admire your enthusiasm, we have some suggestions for items you might want to add to your wish list.  And they don’t necessarily have to be for you; they could also be for someone you know.

Adam, Dave, and I have nine items we’d like to recommend: three small items (“Stocking Stuffers”), three moderately priced items (“Under the Tree”), and three expensive items (“Extra Nice”).  More importantly, we each have a charity to recommend since we truly believe it’s better to give than to receive (unless you’re receiving a trip to outer space; nothing beats a trip to outer space).  Hit the jump to check out our 2013 Gift Guide.

Gina Torres Talks SUITS Season 3 Summer Finale, Upping the Stakes, Returning to HANNIBAL, Looking Back on FIREFLY, and More

by     Posted 211 days ago

The USA Network’s Suits has become one of the most thrilling and unpredictable series on television, and things are sure to heat up on the summer finale.  As Jessica Pearson, actress Gina Torres is compelling in every episode, partly for her strength and brutal honesty, and partly because she can be both your best enemy and your worst friend, especially if you’re Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht).

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Gina Torres talked about what’s coming up for her character, what she’s enjoyed about the journey this season, how the stakes just keep getting higher and higher, whether Jessica and Harvey can ever expect true loyalty from each other, and whether she’d like to see Jessica get a love interest.  She also talked about her experience doing Season 1 of Hannibal and her hope to return to Season 2, and what’s it like for people to still be fans of Firefly, so many years after it went off the air.  Check out what she had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

The Dark Horse Joss Whedon panel definitely drew a huge crowd of Whedonites Friday night. Tthe panel basically turned into an hour of great back and forth questions and answers between Whedon and the fans. Whedon has claimed his rightful place as one of the demigods of Comic-Con, having earlier that day taken par tin the panel for his new ABC television series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Despite the crowd’s warm reaction to the pilot episode, Whedon still has to fight against the fatigue of his own bustling and insane career at the moment.

After a slight introduction from Dark Horse editor Scott Allie, Whedon got underway, Starbucks coffee in hand, talking about everything including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Angel, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog, The Avengers and The Avengers 2, and Much Ado About Nothing. Spoke Art’s Justin Van Genderen Prints Recreate Volkswagen “Lemon” Ad with Millennium Falcon and Firefly

Lemon Millennium Falcon Justin Van Genderen slice

While the pristine USS Enterprise is a sight to behold, artist Justin Van Genderen understands the appeal of a spaceship that shows its wear.  He recreated Volkswagen’s classic “Lemon” print advertisement for the Millennium Falcon and the Firefly—with a slight twist.  Volkswagen’s slogan was focused on quality control: “We pluck the lemons; you get the plums.”  Van Genderen embraces the imperfect: “You keep the plums, we’ll pick the lemons.”

Joss Whedon Feels “Unfettered Joy” for VERONICA MARS Kickstarter Success, but It Won’t Work for Another FIREFLY Movie

by     Posted 1 year, 33 days ago

When the Veronica Mars movie reached its $2 million fundraising goal on Kickstarter in just 10 hours, devoted fans began to imagine what other cancelled shows could seize this financing opportunity.  The first series that came up, repeatedly and emphatically: Firefly.  After all, no one can mobilize his core fanbase like Firefly creator Joss Whedon.  And Whedon admits that his first reaction to the unqualified success was “unfettered joy” because he feels like this is “a real game-changer.”

But before you get your hopes up, Whedon went on to explain why this will not lead to another Firefly movie anytime soon.  Read what he had to say after the jump.

It’s the ten year anniversary of both the birth and death of Firefly, the short-lived sci-fi / post-apocalyptic Whedon-helmed Western that continues to rabidly lives on in the hearts of its fans.  In fact, that’s a major theme addressed in the Science Channel’s one-hour special Firefly: Browncoats Unite, airing November 11th at 10pm after a marathon of the series.  In it, the cast (most — Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Nathan FillionAdam Baldwin and Alan Tudyk — at a roundtable, a few — Morena Baccarin, Gina Torres and Jewel Staite — with separate interviews) along with executive producer Tim Minear and executive story editor Jose Molina, discuss at length the entire oral history of the series, from their favorite moments to their first impressions of each other, and what exactly made the series so magical to fans but not to, at the time, Fox executives.

Attendees to this past summer’s San Diego Comic-Con got a sneak peek of some of the material that’s covered in the special during the series’ panel, and though the special lacks Joss Whedon, it gains Entertainment Weekly senior writer Jeff Jensen, who helps guide the conversational flow.  For more on the special, hit the jump.

I got in line for Ballroom 20 at 6:30am today.  I was early enough to be twenty minutes late to the first panel, because Firefly fans are crazy.  They camped out en masse for the Firefly 10-year reunion—the third panel of the day—and effectively throttled the line for fans of any other properties.  For a show that was cancelled after one shortened season a decade ago, the Firefly crew—Joss WhedonNathan FillionAdam BaldwinAlan TudykSean MaherSummer Glau, writer Jose Molina and producer Tim Minear—sure does draw a crowd.  Could it possibly live up to the Comic-Con hype?  Hit the jump for the panel recap.

by     Posted 1 year, 290 days ago

Comic-Con has released the schedule for Friday, July 13th, and it provides further proof of how the convention is moving away from movies and towards TV series.  On Friday, three major TV series will be occupying Hall H: The Big Bang Theory, The Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones.  However, there will still be plenty of presentations for movies including ParaNorman, Resident Evil: Retribution, Total Recall, Looper, and most exciting of all—a first look at Neill Blomkamp‘s District 9 follow-up, Elysium.

Outside of Hall H, there’s plenty of other great stuff including the panels for Community, Breaking Bad, The Legend of Korra, Firefly, and more.  Hit the jump for highlights from Friday’s schedule, and click here for Thursday’s schedule.  The 2012 San Diego Comic-Con runs from July 12 – 15th.

Recap of the SERENITY Hero Complex Screening with Nathan Fillion; Also Talks MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, FIREFLY Reunion, and Joss Whedon

This weekend Hero Complex in association with The Los Angeles Times hosted the third annual Hero Complex Film Festival. Highlights to which included a screening of Shaun of the Dead with Edgar Wright, Wall-E with director Andrew Stanton, A Clockwork Orange with Malcolm McDowell, and Robocop with Peter Weller.

Joss Whedon’s cult-favorite Serenity closed out the festival Sunday night.  Star Nathan Fillion was on hand to discuss the film and its short-lived television predecessor Firefly.  (I still maintain that show’s season/series finale “Objects in Space to be the finest piece of writing Whedon’s ever done.)  In the post screening Q&A, Fillion reflected on reuniting with the cast for the film, reciting Whedon’s particular cadences and previews his role in another Whedon project/film: Much Ado About Nothing.  For all this and more, hit the jump.

To the surprise of no one, Adam Chitwood, Dave Trumbore, and I gave The Avengers our full attention in the latest episode of Collider’s new podcast, The Collision.  We talked about the film, its record-breaking opening weekend, what it could mean for future Marvel movies, why Marvel needs to bring back Joss Whedon (provided he wants the gig), and the film’s epilogue (we put that at the end of the podcast to avoid spoiling it for people who haven’t seen the movie yet).  Finally, we finished up with our recommendations, and you can check out trailers for those recommendations after the jump.

Click here to listen to the new episode, click here for last week’s episode, and click here to add The Collision to your RSS feed.  Also, we are now on iTunes, and while it’s still not where we want it to be, we’re working on it and I thank everyone who helped us out.  Also, I’m in the process of looking for a new Skype recording program and a good mixing program for PC.  As always, please sound off in the comments section on how we can improve the show. [Special thanks to Jason Barr for mixing this week's podcast]

Joss Whedon Talks DR. HORRIBLE Sequel, the Sacrifice Necessary to Make FIREFLY Season 2, Doing a Full-Scale Musical, and More

by     Posted 2 years, 5 days ago

Though the Internet has given way to plenty of nasty and terrible things over the years, one of the most fruitful recent trends has been Q&A sessions with writers/directors/actors/etc. on Reddit.  Mr. Joss Whedon (who’s technically royalty here on the internets) participated in a Reddit AMA recently, touching on everything from a Dr. Horrible sequel to season two of Firefly, to Scarlett Johansson’s prevalence as a “sex object” in much of the marketing for The Avengers.

Hit the jump to check out some of the highlights from the conversation.
