Weekend Box Office: THOR: THE DARK WORLD Thunders Past $86 Million

Thor: The Dark World earned an estimated $86.1 million from 3,841 locations on its first weekend in theatres.  That might seem like a step down for the Thunder God after appearing in The Avengers but, Disney will be quick to note, the debut marks a 31% improvement over Thor’s first solo outing, in 2011. And, as for all those predictions that put the sequel in the $100 million range? I’m not sure what we were thinking…

 Title Weekend Total
1.  Thor: The Dark World $86,100,000 $86.1
2.  Bad Grandpa $11,300,000 $78.7
3.  Free Birds $11,180,000 $38.1
4.  Last Vegas $11,100,000 $33.5

6.  Gravity $8,405,000 $231.1
7.  12 Years a Slave $6,600,000 $17.3
8.  Captain Phillips $5,800,000 $90.9

Oscar Beat: 19 Animated Features Submitted for 86th Academy Awards

19 animated feature films have been submitted for consideration for the 86th Annual Academy Awards, and it’s clear that this is a very thin year for the Best Animated Feature race.  Monsters University and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 feel like the biggest standouts, and while MU is certainly a strong effort from Pixar, it’s tough to imagine those two rousing the same kind of passion that previous nominees like How to Train Your Dragon, Toy Story 3, or even ParaNorman instilled.  DreamWorks Animation has two contenders in the bunch with The Croods and Turbo, while Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 2, Blue Sky’s Epic, and Disney’s Planes and Frozen are also eligible for nominations.  Hayao Miyazaki’s latest feature The Wind Rises is also among the submitted films.

Hit the jump to check out the full list of submitted features and for my early thoughts on the Best Animated Feature Oscar race.  The 86th Oscars will be held on March 2, 2014.  To catch up on all of our Oscar Beat coverage thus far, click here.

The adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s beloved science fiction novel Ender’s Game hit theatres on Friday, and while it’s not looking like a break-out hit, it did not embarrass itself either. Fellow newcomers Last Vegas and Free Birds, came in about equal, but – considering the latter’s family-earning potential – its estimate seems a bit underwhelming. In more impressive news, Thor: The Dark World flexed its muscles overseas, taking in $109.4 million from its first 30 territories.

Title Weekend Total
1.  Ender’s Game $28,000,000 $28
2.  Bad Grandpa $20,500,000 $62
3.  Last Vegas $16,520,000 $16.5
4.  Free Birds $16,200,000 $16.2
5.  Gravity $15,130,000 $219.1
6.  Captain Phillips $8,500,000 $82.5
7.  12 Years a Slave $4,600,000 $8.7
8.  Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 $4,200,000 $106.1
9.  Carrie $3,400,000 $31.9
10.  The Counselor $3,250,000 $13.3

Friday Box Office: ENDER’S GAME Tracks Solid Opening

After an uneven October dominated by just one title, November’s box office got off to a more equitable start. Two of Friday’s new releases did solid business on their opening days – with Ender’s Game coming out on top, as expected. The sci-fi adaptation earned an estimated $9.9 million from 3,407 locations on Friday, including $1.4 million from Thursday pm and midnight previews.  That puts Ender’s Game on track for close to $30 million through Sunday – a bit higher than the $26 million start Lionsgate was expecting.

Targeting a more ‘mature’ audience, Last Vegas is also off to a good start. The CBS Films title earned an estimated $5.1 million from 3,065 venues on Friday. That puts Last Vegas on track for a $15 million first weekend – the high end of expectations for this star-studded comedy. Compared to its live-action compatriots, Free Birds looks like the frame’s only turkey. The animated feature earned just $4 million on Friday despite having the widest release of the week at 3,736 locations. Even with the typical Saturday kiddie bump, Free Birds is not projected to earn more than $16 million through Sunday. We’ll have complete details tomorrow.

 Title Friday Total
1.  Ender’s Game $9,900,000 $9.9
2.  Bad Grandpa $6,090,000 $47.6
3.  Last Vegas $5,100,000 $5.1
4.  Free Birds $4,000,000 $4
5.  Gravity $3,610,000 $209.6

New Trailer and Poster for FREE BIRDS, Featuring the Voices of Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler

A new trailer and poster have landed for writer-director Jimmy Hayward’s animated family movie, Free Birds.  The story centers on two turkeys who couldn’t be more different, but are forced to team up and travel back in time in order to get their fellow birds off the Thanksgiving dinner table.  I wasn’t expecting too much from this trailer considering the premise, but there were a few laughs to be found in this kid-friendly holiday flick.  The humor shouldn’t have been that surprising considering that Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler all lend their voices to characters.

Free Birds opens in 2D and 3D nationwide starting November 1st.  Hit the jump to view the new trailer and check out the new poster.

First Trailer for FREE BIRDS Featuring the Voices of Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, and Amy Poehler

Relativity Media has released the first trailer for director Jimmy Hayward’s (Horton Hears a Who!) upcoming animated film Free Birds.  The film centers on two turkeys who travel back in time in order to try to undo the tradition of eating turkey on Thanksgiving.  Hayward’s Horton Hears a Who! was actually pretty funny, and there are a couple of solid jokes to be found in this debut trailer for Free Birds.  The film looks to be very heavily themed towards the holiday of Thanksgiving, and the time travel aspect allows the story to play around in both the present day and 17th century setting.  Whether kids take to the turkey-fronted story is uncertain, but I could see the film causing quite few outbursts from children around the Thanksgiving table as they realize that the lovable characters and the delicious gravy-covered treat are one and the same.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film features the voices of Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Amy Poehler, Dan Fogler, Lesley Nicol, George Takei, Colm Meaney, Keith David, Eddie Sotelo, Josh Lawson, and Danny CareyFree Birds opens in 3D on November 1st.

OUT OF THE FURNACE Set for October 4th; PARANOIA Moves up to August 16th [UPDATED]

Relativity Media has done some shuffling on their schedule.  The studio has set October 4th for Out of the Furnace, the new film from Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart).  The film centers on Russell Baze (Christian Bale), who is released after serving four years in prison only to find that his younger brother, Rodney Baze Jr. (Casey Affleck), has been brutally murdered. He sets out to avenge the death and track down the killer.  The film also stars Sam Shepard, Zoe Saldana, Forest Whitaker, and Woody Harrelson.  Looking at the film’s pedigree, I would not be surprised to see the movie show up at TIFF.  Out of the Furnace will share October 4th with the Vince Vaughn comedy The Delivery Man, Alfonso Cuaron‘s sci-fi film Gravity, and Robert RodriguezSin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Paranoia previously held the October 4th date for Relativity, but it will now move to August 16th to play against Kick-Ass 2 and the Aubrey Plaza comedy The To Do ListParanoia stars Liam Hemsworth as Adam Cassidy, an entry-level employee at a corporation run by Nicholas Wyatt (Gary Oldman).  When Wyatt turns Cassidy into a corporate spy against rival Jock Goddard (Harrison Ford), Cassidy is drawn into a dangerous web of intrigue.  Hit the jump for a full list and synopses for Relativity’s upcoming slate, which also includes Luc Besson‘s Malavita, Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s Don Jon, and the animated film Free Birds (click here to see a standee for that film from CinemaCon).

While I already posted the first posters for Spike Lee‘s Oldboy, James Wan‘s Insidious: Chapter 2, Robert Schwentke’s R.I.P.D., and a great display for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, I’ve still got a ton of pictures left to post.  However, rather than offering them up one article at a time, I’m grouping them all into one huge article.

While a lot of the posters you’ve previously seen, there are a few new things like the first logo for Paul Greengrass‘ Somali pirate pic Captain Phillips starring Tom Hanks, the first poster for Where the Devil Hides, and the first display for Jimmy Hayward’s Free Birds starring Woody Harrelson, Owen Wilson and Amy Poehler.  In addition, you can also check out posters/displays for Star Trek Into Darkness, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, Despicable Me 2, Fast and Furious 6,  Man of Steel, The Lone Ranger, The Heat, Elysium, The East, The Wolverine, The Mortal Instruments, and a lot more.
