After a strong debut on Friday, Act of Valor went on to win the weekend with an estimated $24.7 million from 3,039 locations. Considering that this is an R-rated feature without any major stars, that’s a pretty remarkable start. Then again, with the fistfuls of cash Relativity devoted to marketing this Navy SEALs drama, anything less than first place would have felt un-American.

With the stronger than expected first-place showing of Act of Valor, 2012’s string of winning weekends now stretches to eight in a row. However, considering that at this time last year the box office featured 2011’s lowest number one debut (Hall Pass with $13.5 million) and one of the year’s most notable flops (the $5.1 million debut of Drive Angry), there was no way that 2012 was not going to look like a cash-buffet in comparison.

That kind of profit was exactly what Relativity had in mind when it picked up the independently-produced Act of Valor for a reported $13 million. Of course, that was before the studio went all-out to promote its acquisition, buying four Super Bowl ads at a reported cost of $3 million each. That would have looked like overkill – if it hadn’t paid off. With its strong debut and good word of mouth, Act of Valor should pay back its investors by the end of its domestic run; and that’s a good thing. This is one movie that can’t rely on ...

Looks like that big Super Bowl buy paid off for Relativity, whose Act of Valor easily captured Friday’s top spot. From its launch in 3,039 locations, the R-rated Navy Seals’ drama earned an estimated $9 million - indicating a weekend in excess of $25 million. Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds took second on Friday with $5.4 million from 2,132 venues. At this point the romantic-drama is tracking under the $20 million that has become standard for the filmmaker. I was personally expecting more from Good Deeds (especially after Perry’s much-lauded eulogy for Whitney Houston last Saturday), but it looks like the film will end its first three days with around $18 million, or the low end of recent Perry projects. Speaking of lows, the comedy Wanderlust is poised to set the nadir for a Judd Apatow-produced feature. From its launch in 2,002 locations, the Universal comedy earned just $2.2 million on Friday in eighth place, and is expected to gross around $7.5 million by Sunday – less than Drillbit Taylor, in other words. Things look even bleaker for the Summit thriller Gone, however, which debuted in ninth place with $1.7 million for a projected weekend of $5.5 million. Full details and analysis tomorrow.

In the curtly titled Gone, Amanda Seyfried stars as Jill, a pill-popping, suicidal chronic liar whose sister may or may not have been kidnapped by the same mystery-man that abducted Seyfried (or did he?) two years prior. The lack of conviction in the previous sentence could be due to any of the aforementioned pill-abusing/emotionally unstable/duplicitous attribute(s) of the character. But Seyfried/Jill sure does seem convinced that something terrible is afoot. It honestly doesn’t matter if Jill’s right/wrong/crazy/lying/all-of-the-above --- because you can’t help but want her to be true. Reality doesn’t matter, only conviction.

In the following interview, Amanda Seyfried discusses the morally grey nature of Jill and the difficulties in playing a scene all by your lonesome. Seyfried was also more than excited to discuss Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables – in particular the live recordings for the musical. Gone opens everywhere this Friday. For the full interview, hit the jump.

Amanda Seyfried

Talks about the balancing act of playing a character in a psychological thriller
Did she do any training for the role and what type of fighting style she learned
For much of the film she's by herself, is it a different process as an actor getting ready for those scenes. Also, does she find them more difficult
Talks about how excited she is for Les Miserables and how Tom Hooper is going to record the live performances

George and Linda are an overextended, stressed out Manhattan couple. After George is downsized out of his job, they find themselves with only one option: to move in with George’s awful brother in Atlanta.

On the way there, George and Linda stumble upon Elysium, an idyllic community populated by colorful characters who embrace a different way of looking at things. Money? It can’t buy happiness. Careers? Who needs them? Clothes? Only if you want them.

Is Elysium the fresh start George and Linda need? Or will the change of perspective cause more problems than it solves?

The first trailer for the thriller Gone has been released. The film stars Amanda Seyfried as a young woman who suspects that her missing sister has been abducted by the same serial killer who kidnapped her two years prior. The trailer’s actually not bad, as it sets up the movie almost as a revenge flick with the authorities refusing to believe Seyfried’s story. The young woman decides to set out on her own to track down the killer in order to free her sister. The pic looks like it could be a pretty intense little thriller in the vein of Minority Report.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Jennifer Carpenter, Wes Bently, and Sebastian Stan. Gone opens February 24th, 2012.

Summit Entertainment has set release dates for two of its upcoming projects. First up, Heitor Dhalia's thriller Gone is now slated to hit theaters on February 24, 2012. Starring Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Carpenter, and Sebastian Stan, the film focuses on a young woman (Seyfried) who suspects her missing sister has been abducted by the same serial killer who kidnapped her only two years prior. As the story so often goes, no one believes Seyfried's suspicions (which I'm assuming turn out to be right on the money) and she is forced to save her sister all by her lonesome.
THR also reports that the studio has set April 6, 2012 as the release date for its similarly kidnapped-based thriller Cold Light of Day. Starring Henry Cavill and Bruce Willis, Mabrouk El Mechri's (JCVD) film centers on a man (Cavill) whose family is abducted while vacationing in Spain. As he puts the pieces of their disappearance together, the man uncovers family secrets and a government conspiracy that are responsible for the crime.

The drama There Be Dragons is an epic tale of revolutionaries and saints in a time of Civil War. It is a heartbreaking story about the power of forgiveness and overcoming your past, which is something that actor Wes Bentley knows all too well. After being catapulted to fame with his stand-out performance in American Beauty, he turned down several major roles and all but disappeared from the public eye. Now, all these years later, he’s openly talking about only taking roles to be able to pay bills or buy drugs, his current sobriety, and his desire to become the actor he always wanted to be.

At the film’s press day, Wes Bentley talked about how cathartic this particular role was for him personally, the challenge of playing a man from his younger years through the age of 78, reconnecting spiritually in his own life while shooting the film, and how he enjoys acting for the opportunity it gives him to dig into the choices one makes in life. He also talked about his next role as a detective in the abduction thriller Gone, starring Amanda Seyfried. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Here’s the synopsis:
There Be Dragons tells the story of London-based investigative journalist Robert Torres (Dougray Scott), who visits Spain to research a book about Josemaria Escriva (Charlie Cox), the controversial founder of Opus Dei. But, Robert hits a professional and personal wall when his most promising source, who also happens to be his own father, Manolo ...

With director Catherine Hardwicke's (Twilight, Thirteen) thriller Red Riding Hood opening this weekend, I was able to speak with the cast as a reporter for our partner website Omelete. In the film, Amanda Seyfried stars as Valerie, a beautiful young woman torn between a brooding outsider (Shiloh Fernandez) and the wealthy man of her parents’ dreams (Max Irons). Unfortunately, one of them may be the wolf that terrorizes her village. Gary Oldman, Billy Burke, Virginia Madsen, and Julie Christie also star. Watch some clips here.

During the interview, Seyfried talked about why she wanted to make Red Riding Hood, what kind of research she did into fairy tales, did she get to keep her costumes, what's the last year been like for her as she's been working constantly, and she talks about two upcoming projects: Heitor Dhalia's Gone and Andrew Niccol's Now. Hit the jump to watch:

Amanda Seyfried

Has she been to Brazil before
Talks about her next project Gone with Brazillian director Heitor Dhalia
What's the last year or two been like for her
What got her involved in Red Riding Hood
How much research did she do regarding fairy tales
Did she get to keep any of her costumes
Now talk. Describes the movie and we talk about all the paparazzi that was on set
Says she is not doing Breaking Waves (it was on IMDb)

A couple of casting stories for you this evening. Amanda Seyfried has joined Summit’s thriller Gone. Directed by Heitor Dhalia, the film tells the story of a girl who returns home after the night shift to find her sister’s bed empty. She’s convinced that the serial killer who kidnapped her two years before has come back to finish the job. Allison Burnett (Untraceable) wrote the screenplay. Seyfried will next be seen in Catherine Hardwicke's Red Riding Hood which opens on March 11th.

ER alum Goran Visnjic has joined the cast of David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Visnjic will play Dragan Armansky, the CEO of the security firm that employs the protagonist Lisbeth Salander. His character appears in all three books of the trilogy, and Deadline reports that Visnjic has signed on for the two subsequent film adaptations as well. Dragon Tattoo stars Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Stellan Skarsgaard, Robin Wright, Christopher Plummer and Joley Richardson. Filming is currently underway, with the film set to be released on December 21st.
