Collider was recently invited to attend a special event, held at the Avalon Bardot Theater in Hollywood, celebrating the creativity of Geoff Johns and benefitting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, which is dedicated to the protection of the First Amendment rights of the comics art form and its community of retailers, creators, publishers, librarians, and readers. The purpose of the evening was to recognize Johns’ work on Green Lantern, that started in 2004 with Green Lantern: Rebirth, reintroducing Hal Jordan to the DC Comics Universe and beginning a journey that would make the series one of the most exciting and best-selling franchises in the comics industry. After nearly a decade of work, Johns now concludes that run with Green Lantern #20, leaving the franchise with hundreds of new characters and worlds that will be explored for generations to come.

During the event, Geoff Johns sat down for an intimate Q&A, in which he talked about bringing back Hal Jordan, escaping the typical comic book trappings, the mixed emotions he felt while finishing Issue 20, what it was like to start getting the finished pages back, how he decided where and when this story would end, the reaction he got from DC when he finally told them, what he discovered about himself while writing the story, creating the first Arab-American Green Lantern, and when he doubts himself, as a writer. He also talked about his time working for director/producer Richard Donner, and the time he wrecked one of his cars. Check ...

As you can see from the above image, not everyone who's historically been in DC's Justice League will make it into Warner Bros. Justice League in 2015. The only confirmed creative type on the picture is screenwriter Will Beall (Gangster Squad) as no director or cast is in place yet, but it looks as if we might have a solid core of characters we can expect to see on screen. We posted an extensive list of possible superheroes a couple of weeks ago, along with the rumors of the movie's villain and source material. That list has been whittled down considerably. Hit the jump to see who made the cut, who missed out and who might pop up as a cameo.

The reliable troop at Latino Review report that the following costumed crime-fighters will form the core of Justice League:
Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and The Flash
Not exactly earth-shattering news. What's more interesting is who might also be making an appearance, either as a brief cameo or as a possible credits scene with lead-ins to the inevitable sequel. The article reports that Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter have the highest possibility of a cameo, with Hawkman rounding out the list as the slimmest chance. Their money and mine go to Manhunter for some extra power and cosmic background. The League is going to need all the help they can get to go up against Darkseid, so we'll see how this plays out (sorry, Green Arrow).

Also, it's a shame that the female ...

What can we confirm about Warner Bros.' Justice League so far? We know Zack Snyder (director of Man of Steel) has a lot to say about how his film fits into the Justice League universe, and that Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises) is reportedly not set to play Batman in the picture. Other than that, we know Will Beall (Gangster Squad) is writing the screenplay which will feature Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash and other heroes. But who will these heroes unite against, exactly? Will it be an army of faceless evildoers, much like the Chitauri in The Avengers? Not likely, since the Marvel sequel will be opening the same year as the DC picture and The Avengers 2 already has a Mad Titan in Thanos. So who in the DC universe could possibly be more powerful? Hit the jump to find out.

Though this is just a rumor at present, possible spoilers clearly follow ahead, so proceed at your own risk. In a recent report from Latino-Review, the guys are pretty confident that they've nailed the big baddie for the Justice League team-up. It makes sense, as DC's got some heavy hitters on the heroic side who are going to need a substantial boss to go up against instead of a bunch of punching bags. So just who is it going to be?

None other than...Darkseid! Originally introduced in 1970, Darkseid has been a primary antagonist of Superman and the Justice League for over 40 years. Outside of the comics, he's also appeared in television shows like ...

With the conclusion of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, the future of DC Comics movies is entirely up in the air right now. DC and Warner Bros' next step in the gameplan is Zack Snyder's Superman reboot Man of Steel, which must fight through the general disappointment created by the last reboot, Superman Returns. That's nothing compared to Green Lantern, which rode a 26% Rotten Tomatoes score to squeak past $200 million worldwide. But hey, at least they have movies: Wonder Woman and The Flash are left out in the cold, and Aquaman may only be a viable superhero in the Hollywood fantasy of Entourage.

DC's rival Marvel spent years carefully assembling their stable of heroes, culminating in the smash success of The Avengers. It seems DC is going to cut through the Gordian knot and skip straight to Justice League after Man of Steel, and use that to introduce the new era of DC movies. More after the jump.

A source told Batman on Film that Justice League will be the next DC picture after Man of Steel, possibly lined up for Summer 2015. As suits their interest, BOF noted that the new, rebooted Batman would be introduced in Justice League before WB started a new standalone Batman series. One could hardly blame DC for using the movie as an opportunity to reboot Green Lantern. And since Snyder has implied that his Superman has no explicit connection to Justice League, there is flexibility there as well.

Treat this all as rumor for now, ...

Not even close. For the second weekend in a row, DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted is America’s number one attraction; down just 41% with an estimate of $35.5 million. Though down a much more substantial 60%, Fox’s Prometheus managed to hold on to second place thanks to two widely underperforming debuts. Those would be Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy which, even when combined, couldn’t come close to challenging for first place.

Before we start picking apart the bones of Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy, I feel obliged to give credit to Madagascar 3. The three-quel is not only number one in America but is also the most popular movie worldwide, earning a reported $157 million internationally through Sunday. That puts the global total for the family film at $277.4 million after ten days, which is on par with Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa at the same point in its run. The last entry in the Madagascar franchise ended up earning a giant $603.9 million globally (70% of that from international sales) without the 3D ticket price advantage of the latest film. With Pixar’s Brave launching next weekend, Madagascar 3 will lose the limelight so how nice for them that, this weekend at least, audiences found all alternate viewing options so absolutely repellent!

This brings me to the business of dissecting this week’s disasters, starting with ...

As the 84th Academy Awards move closer, we’re starting to get a better sense of how things will pan out. We recently shared the 39 songs that will contend for the Best Original Song category, and now the Academy has announced the 97 original scores eligible for the Best Original Score award. AMPAS is notoriously picky when it comes to eligibility in this category, and as we feared the scores for both Drive and Attack the Block have been deemed ineligible. Also disappointing is the ineligibility of Alexandre Desplat’s mesmerizing score for The Tree of Life.

While it’s upsetting to see some of the year’s best work side-lined, there’s plenty to be happy about. I was a huge fan of Howard Shore’s work in Hugo and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s score for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, as well as The Chemical Brothers’ brilliant work in the criminally underseen Hanna. Hit the jump for the full list, as well as who I think will make the cut.

I think Shore’s Hugo and Reznor and Ross’ Dragon Tattoo scores both have good shots at nominations. Alexandre Desplat’s beautiful work in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is also a contender, as is John Williams for War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin. While I’ve yet to see the film, many are expecting Ludovic Bource to be recognized for The Artist. As outside shots, I’d be over the moon to see Hanna recognized, as well as Cliff Martinez’s excellent ...

This summer we got a comic-book origin tale about a man with father issues accepting his role as guardian and protector of the universe fighting against his someone he thought was a brother, with the film featuring an unnecessary love interest and a supporting cast that should have had more to do, on top of sequences set in outer space. Actually, we got two of those.

Superficially, the resemblances between Paramount/Marvel’s Thor and Warner Brothers/DC’s Green Lantern are hard to ignore, but Thor was a modest hit (or at least not a belly flop), while Green Lantern was the weakest performer of the summer’s comic book films. Both aren’t that good, but both have similar things to recommend: the world, and their villains. Here Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, the cocky pilot who takes on the mantle of galactic defender, and must fight Parallax and Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) to keep Earth safe. Our review of Green Lantern on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

The film is presented in two cuts, the theatrical and the extended version, which mostly offers a backstory where Hal Jordan is introduced to Carol Ferris and Hector as children. There are good things about this, but the neatness of the universe and the explaining the self-evident makes it a wash to which is better. The film starts with Parallax imprisoned, but a freak accident breaks him out. Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison) is mortally wounded trying to stop Parallax, so Abin passes on his ring to Hal ...

This weekend, New York Comic-Con attendees got a first look at the trailer for the upcoming animated feature Justice League: Doom as well as the opening scene from Green Lantern: The Animated Series. I like that Doom is bringing back almost all the voice actors from Justice League, but the trailer is mostly just action scenes and corny one-liners. Also, I didn't realize the new Legion of Doom is six people, which is kind of dinky when compared to the twenty or thirty featured in Justice League Unlimited. Green Lantern looks more interesting since right from the get-go we're introduced to members of the Red Lantern Corps. It may be a bit confusing to those who don't know the character beyond this summer's disappointing blockbuster, but I assume there will be some kind of exposition in the hour-long premiere.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and the opening scene. Justice League Doom is due out on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD in early 2012. Green Lantern: The Animated Series premieres November 11th at 7/6c on Cartoon Network.

Now that all big four superhero movies have come out this summer, Green Lantern is clearly the biggest disappointment of the bunch. Rather than charge into production on a sequel, Warner Bros. was forced to take a tepid wait-and-see approach to the international box office and home entertainment sales. But Green Lantern 2 is certainly still in the studio's mind and President Jeff Robinov believes that the problem wasn't the concept but the execution. However, the flaws he sees in the execution weren't the ones that sunk the movie.

Hit the jump for what Robinov said the sequel needs to do in order to "improve" on the original.

Robinov tells Hero Complex:
“We had a decent opening* so we learned there is an audience. To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action… And we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space versus on Earth.”
None of that was why Green Lantern sucked. I didn't sit through Green Lantern thinking, "If only this movie where edgier, darker, and better balanced between the time spent in space and the time spent on Earth." I sat through Green Lantern thinking, "How many remedial screenwriting 101 students did it take to scribble this on to a cocktail napkin?" The movie is a paint-by-numbers screenplay and yet it's still an absolute mess. I won't squeeze in my own review of Green Lantern but you should really check out Topless Robot's "re-write" if ...

While DC may not always knock the ball out of the park with their feature film offerings, it’s fairly safe to say that their Animated Television projects have been almost universally hailed as excellent. With the Green Lantern Corps getting the spotlight this summer in a feature film, video game, and direct to home entertainment animated film, DC looks to once again storm TV screens with a new 3D CGI series Green Lantern: The Animated Series destined for Cartoon Network. Comic Con alumnus and DC Animated architect Bruce Timm was joined by series producers Jim Krieg and Giancarlo Volpe in the press room and we were able to talk to all of them. Watch our video interviews after the jump.

Bruce Timm is a name that has, rightfully, become synonymous with quality when it comes to animation. As Executive Producer and 2D Character Designer, Timm sets poised to steer DC’s newest foray into Animated adventure straight ahead and to quality. Timm talked designing for 3D versus 2D, things left undone from the Justice League series, and even let slip some small spoilers for fans in the know (Star Saphire and the Alpha Lanterns anyone?).

Timm teases Star Sapphire by saying:
“Carol Ferris is an interesting character and she gets a lot more interesting about halfway through the series. If you’re a comic book nerd, you know exactly what I’m talking about.”
Here's the full interview:

When Green Lantern got off to a less-than glowing start last month many people cited superhero fatigue as the cause. So how to explain this week’s number one launch of Captain America? Are fans only tired of non-Marvel superheroes? Whatever the reason, The First Avenger has now earned the highest debut for a comic book hero in 2011 - besting the $65.7 debut of Thor back in May by the narrowest of margins. In fact, the two films are so close that, at this point, I would suggest waiting until final figures are revealed on Monday before banking on the Captain’s new title

You may recall that the reaction to Thor’s first weekend domestic gross was rather muted. Though $65.7 million was a completely respectable launch for a new superhero franchise it was not in the same financial league as past films which had the coveted first weekend of summer all to themselves. In comparison, Captain America’s nearly equivalent opening looks far more impressive. Not only did the Capt. have to battle that aforementioned fatigue, he also had the burden of launching the week after the final Harry Potter film smashed the all-time opening weekend record. Until Friday, in fact, it seemed likely that Deathly ...

We have reached the end of Paramount’s long, long seven-day launch of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. So, on this no-news day, let’s take a look at some of the more salient figures regarding Michael Bay’s third installment in his blockbusting franchise. Yesterday, Tf3 broke the all-time record for the Fourth of July weekend at $97.5 million. With Monday’s estimate of $18.9 million included, the record for the four-day holiday weekend has also fallen. The previous winner was 2004’s Spider-Man 2 with $115.8 million. The holiday take for Transformers 3 now stands at $116.4 million. So, that’s more.

Anyone who was around for the first week of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009 knows that, here in the US, the grosses for the film’s follow-up have been much more muted. Tf2 launched on Wednesday, June 24th with $62 million and earned $109 million on its first three day weekend. In contrast, Transformers 3 took in $37.7 million on its Wednesday launch with a debut weekend charting at $97.4 million. The BIG difference that makes that discrepancy a little less troubling for Michael Bay and Associates has come from the new film’s international grosses.

Over its entire theatrical run, Fallen’s worldwide total of $836 million was fairly evenly split: 51% from the US and 49% from everywhere else. So far, Dark of the Moon has earned a worldwide total of $379 million in six days, making Tf3 Paramount Pictures International’s biggest launch to date. The magic of math also reveals that ...

In the US, the Fourth of July weekend is traditionally a giant money-maker for Hollywood movies. So, surprise! This year was a giant money maker for Hollywood movies. Make that “movie.” Three movies debuted, but only one – Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon - made an impact. A big, record-breaking impact.

Despite trailing its predecessor in grosses and attendance over its first five days here in the US, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is already a huge international hit projected to take in more than $370 million by Monday. Here at home, the film broke the record for the three day Fourth of July frame and is expected, by Monday, to hold the four day record as well.

On Tuesday, TF3 opened at 9 pm for 3D and IMAX previews in 2,700 locations and took in $5.5 million. When its opening day started three hours later, the sequel earned another $8 million, or the second highest midnight total of 2011 behind The Hangover Part II’s $10.4 million. For all of Wednesday, TF3 posted $37.3 million. That equals the sixth-highest Wednesday opening ever and the best overall opening day of 2011: besting Pirates of the Caribbean 4’s $34.8 million Friday launch. But, let’s face it, those records are not particularly impressive. Here are the Transformers 3 records that count.

Since 2004, Spider-Man 2 has held the record for the biggest Fourth of July weekend (Friday-Sunday) with $88.2 million. Spidey also dominated ...

Despite an underwhelming box office and middling reviews, Warner Bros. is apparently still moving forward with a sequel to Green Lantern. Back in August, we reported that screenwriter Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) had been hired to pen the follow-up, working from a treatment by the first film’s writers Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, and Marc Guggenheim. However, director Martin Campbell has stated that he won’t be back for another go around. THR reports that Warner Bros. “still believes” in the franchise and is hopeful that it will have long legs in theaters. Hit the jump for more.

While WB sounds hopeful, just because the studio says that they’re moving ahead with the sequel doesn’t guarantee that it'll see the light of day. This report comes at a curious time, with Warner Bros. possibly hoping that trumpeting a sequel will increase box office returns (“Well since they’re making a sequel, I guess I’ll go see it now.”)

Whatever the studio’s intentions with regards to Green Lantern 2, they’re definitely searching for a replacement franchise with Harry Potter coming to an end this summer. They’ve got Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flow) working on a Tarzan film that’s part of a potential trilogy, and they recently acquired the rights to the book series The Lost Years of Merlin, focusing on the early years of the young wizard. Tarzan seems like a bit of a stretch for a franchise, but Merlin could make a nice fit for the Harry Potter crowd. ...

After posting a strong start on Friday, Cars 2 went on to finish the weekend with an estimated $68 million from its 4,115 locations. That was more than double what its closest competitor, Bad Teacher, took in; but not quite enough to get the sequel higher than fifth place on the list of All-Time Pixar Studio champions.

Despite comically low early expectations for Cars 2 ($40-$50 million), Disney/Pixar Studios’ first non-Toy related sequel easily charged off with a first day total that eclipsed all of the previous Pixar titles apart from Toy Story 3. All it had to do was follow the traditional kiddie-film formula with a bump in attendance on Saturday and Cars 2 should have been able to accelerate to over $70 million for the weekend – right where past Pixar leaders like Finding Nemo and The Incredibles crossed their own three-day finish lines. Instead, Mater and McQueen lost some speed on Day Two (down 9.3%) and ended up in the middle of the Pixar pack, ahead of Wall-E and Cars but behind Up. Naturally, all of the studio’s titles trail last year’s Toy Story 3, which also fell off by almost 10% on its second day; but with a final count of $110.3 million, no one much noticed the decline.

Pixar had two other noticeable declines to deal with in Cars 2: one which surely impacted the film’s first weekend estimate and ...

No matter how you slice it, Warner Brothers has to be disappointed with the current estimate for their much-hyped launch of Green Lantern. Not only did the DC hero fail to live up to the studio’s own expectations (which were slashed earlier this week to reflect the film’s negative critical buzz) but, at this point, GL is coming in under that other big, green, super-powered miss: Universal’s The Incredible Hulk.

On this weekend in 2008, the Hulk reboot brought in $55.4 million - a disappointment in a summer that also featured Iron Man and The Dark Knight. The same frame in 2007 brought Fox’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer; which opened to $58 million with reviews that were only slightly more-favorable than GL’s current 24% Tomato reading. Of course, any disappointment WB may be feeling is slight in comparison to their 2010 debut of Jonah Hex. Clearly, Green Lantern is a blockbuster in comparison to that title but what film can’t make the same claim?

The film that Warner Brothers would most like Green Lantern to be compared to is probably their own Batman Begins. Six years ago, ...

Each of the last four weeks I've taken on the task of narrowing down all of the site's content into the neat and tidy "Top 5" feature you see here. Much like choosing your favorite child, this has been a difficult albeit necessary endeavor. For example, this week I was very tempted to include this potential major spoiler from The Dark Knight Rises and/or Matt's take on the Oscar rules tweak that calls for the number of "Best Picture" nominees to fall between 5 and 10. And yet, I was able to make the tough decision of leaving those two out of the mix in favor of five pieces I found slightly more compelling (this is why they pay me the big bucks).
Speaking of those five "slightly more compelling" pieces, you can hit the jump to find brief recaps and links to articles covering the Star Wars live-action television series, the adaptability of Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, the feasibility of Jurassic Park 4, the first trailer for Brad Pitt's Moneyball, and the merits of Warner Brothers' Green Lantern.

1. STAR WARS Live-Action TV Series Still Three of Four Years Away

If you've ever wondered to yourself, "Why am I not seeing a live-action Star Wars television series on my program guide?" then producer Rick McCallum's update on a potential series and the obstacles that besiege it is for you.

After earning $3.35 million from its midnight screenings, Green Lantern brought in an estimated $21.6 million from 3,816 venues – 70% of which were 3D equipped. The third comic book property to hit the screen since Memorial Day, the Lantern seems headed for a weekend in the $60 million range: about where mid-week tracking placed it. That would put the DC Comics title just under Thor’s $65.7 million May debut and just over the $55.1 million launch of X-Men: First Class. Considering that both of those films had Rotten Tomato scores significantly higher than the current 23% rating for Lantern, I’m thinking that Warner Brothers has, so far, dodged a shiny, green bullet. Of course, word of mouth is going to be a factor with GL and, with international estimates unavailable, it is hard to draw an accurate picture of the film’s prospects. The weekend’s second new release, Fox’s Mr. Popper’s Penguins, managed a second place finish on Friday and will probably be lucky to get to $20 million by Sunday. We’ll have full details and analysis tomorrow.

Director Martin Campbell's Green Lantern held midnight screenings last night and the 3D superhero pic earned between $3.35 and $3.4 million from 1,810 locations. The number is on par with Thor ($3.25 million) and X-Men: First Class ($3.37 million). In it's opening weekend, Thor went on to earn $65.7 million and X-Men made $55 million. Early estimates have Green Lantern earning between $50 and $65 million in it's opening weekend in North America. Green Lantern opens in 3,816 locations including, 2,711 3D engagements.

However, when talking about box office numbers, it's important to remember foreign box office usually plays a significant role. Look at Pirates 4. While the film has made $211 million in North America, it's made an absolutely insane $695.9 million overseas (for a total of $907.4 million). So even if Green Lantern only does moderate business in North America, if it plays well around the world, we're getting a sequel. The film opens in 15 markets this weekend, so we'll know very soon where it stands. More on Green Lantern's box office tomorrow.

Director Martin Campbell's Green Lantern exists in a time when rainbow bridges aren’t laughed at and secret agent mutants enhance the drama, which is why the newest entry in DC Comics’ long lineage of films feels like a regression. The talent amassed for this origin story can understandably excite onlookers, but the end result won't make many want to come back for more. A disjointed plot that may alienate audience members instead of pull them in is a bad start to Warner Brothers franchise kick-starter hopeful. The real shame is that Ryan Reynolds is a natural choice for Hal Jordan, and the rest of the cast exude similar confidence, but the material they are working with hinders the film from ever lifting off the ground. Even Campbell seems to be unwilling to commit to the material. Short, choppy, and overpopulated with CG and not enough heart, this is one comic book film you might want to skip this summer. Hit the jump for my full review.
Throughout the universe exists a galactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps. With the use of their power rings, which grants its chosen wearer the ability to create anything their mind imagines, they patrol the 3600 individual sectors of the universe. When the cosmic entity known as Parallax is released and begins to feed on fear, the lone Green Lantern strong enough to defeat it, Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison), is gravely wounded and sets off to find his replacement. Enter cocky fighter test ...
