Rockstar has released three new trailers for Grand Theft Auto V with each trailer focusing on one of the game’s protagonists: Michael, Franklin, and Trevor.  As we previously reported, players will be able to switch between the characters at any point, and as you can see from Trevor’s trailer, there will be some interaction between the protagonists at least as far as Michael and Trevor are concerned.  The trailers also show not only the size of GTA V’s world of Los Santos, but the varying tones.  Michael and Trevor are more on the comic side of the GTA world while Franklin is off in an urban drama.  It will be interesting to see how Rockstar plans to blend all three plotlines into one cohesive story.

Rockstar Games may be reinventing the Grand Theft Auto series by offering three protagonists in the fifth installment, but the studio is sticking to the classic box art design.  Rockstar Games has revealed the box art for Grand Theft Auto V, and it’s the same multi-paneled look gamers have come to know and love.  It also features the three lead criminals: Franklin, Michael, and Trevor.  Of course, this is Grand Theft Auto.  Rockstar could put the game inside of a bear trap, and fans would still be lined-up to buy it at midnight.

If you’re looking for the biggest video game of 2013, it’s probably going to be Grand Theft Auto V.  It’s been the longest wait (5 years), the most main characters (3 that you can switch between at any time), the largest map, and will likely be the biggest seller.  GTA is an event, and with five months until the game is released, Rockstar will continue to roll out the marketing.  Ten new images have been released, and some show off the gorgeous scenery while others give attention to the violence and vehicles.  GTA V is going to be bigger; we’re going to have to wait and see if it’s better.

You’re going to have to wait a little longer to kill that hooker and take your money back.  Rockstar Games has announced that they need some more development time on Grand Theft Auto V, and have pushed the game back to September 17th.  This works much better for me since GTA V was originally due out on March 26th, which was the same release date as Bioshock Infinite, and Bioshock was going to win that battle for my time and money.  Does GTA V have George Washington wielding a mini-gun?  Probably not.

A new trailer for Grand Theft Auto V has finally been released.  It highlights the three leading characters we told you about last week, and the trailer has the cinematic look and feel the series has become known for along with the signature bits of wry comedy.  If there’s one issue with this trailer, it’s that it’s difficult to tell how much of it is gameplay and how much of it are cut-scenes.  All of it looks like fun, but there’s a big difference between watching your character jump between exploding train cards and actually doing it yourself.

Unlike other big gaming franchises where there seems to be a new entry every holiday season, it’s been a long wait between Grand Theft Auto games.  Rockstar has done a terrific job keeping Grand Theft Auto V under wraps, but now they’ve made some big reveals about the highly-anticipated sequel.  The most noteworthy announcement is that GTA V has three protagonists, and you can switch between them “at nearly any time.”  There’s also some unsurprising reveals like how the world of “Los Santos” (GTA V’s Los Angeles) will be bigger than Red Dead Redemption, GTA: San Andreas, and GTA IV combined.  While these are neat details, I’m still wondering if the game will be fun.  For all of its care and attention, GTA IV could be incredibly infuriating for stupid reasons like nicking a cop car forcing you to spend 15 minutes ducking the fuzz.  Also, failing a mission meant having to drive back to the start of the mission so you could drive all the way back to where the mission actually takes place (e.g. the bank heist mission, “Three Leaf Clover”).

Rockstar Games has released the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto V.  Unsurprisingly, it’s big on atmosphere and non-existent on gameplay details, and that’s fine for an announcement trailer.  Once again, it looks like the subtext will be about The American Dream, but this time it’s from the perspective of a guy dreaming about going straight and building a good life for his family.  It’s a set-up for a fine story, but that’s not my concern with GTA V.  My concern is game design, which is where Grand Theft Auto IV fell painfully short.  I’m sure folks will rave about the multiplayer, but the single-player experience is a mess. Restarting your mission from your phone is worthless when you have to drive to your objective anyway.  Your friends are a bunch of tough guys who will get pissy if you don’t go bowling with them.  If you have the audacity to fire your gun or get into a minor traffic accident, expect to run from the cops for the next twenty minutes.  I’m sure GTA V will have a large world (this time it’s based on Los Angeles) and a deep story, but will it be fun?
