While I wait in vain for Rockstar to announce a sequel to Red Dead Redemption for next-gen consoles, the video game studio will be jumping into the next generation this year by releasing Grand Theft Auto V for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as well as PC.  It will be the GTA V you know and love except with stunning next-gen graphics.  You can also port over your Grand Theft Auto Online character, and PC owners will also be getting “a video editor designed for advanced movie-making”, so expect more YouTube videos like this.  I liked GTA V a lot; not enough to buy it a second time, but if you decided to wait until it was re-released for next-gen consoles, your patience has definitely been rewarded.

GRAND THEFT AUTO V Is Not Scaring Hollywood

Dozens of articles and blog posts have covered Grand Theft Auto V‘s $800 million in day one, worldwide retail sales. Virtually all of them have tried to make the point that this somehow proves that video games are now beating the crap out of Hollywood.

Hogwash. First order hogwash, at that.

First, let’s not quibble with the fact that GTA V has proven to be a financial success. Selling $800 million of anything in 24 hours is impressive. That the game will likely surpass $1 billion in a matter of days should prove definitively that video games are a major commercial force.  Hit the jump for more on why the video game industry isn’t bringing down Hollywood any time soon.

New Trailer for GRAND THEFT AUTO V

Rockstar Games has released an “official trailer” for Grand Theft Auto V (so all of the other trailers they released were unofficial?)  A more fitting description would be that this is a story trailer.  It shows that the affluent Michael is drawn back into the world of heists by his crazy former partner Trevor, and that they’re joined by fellow criminal Franklin.  The comedy and action we’ve come to expect from GTA is on full display, and I assume this will be the trailer that they’ll start airing on television since the game’s release is only a few weeks away.

New Trailer for GRAND THEFT AUTO V Goes Inside the Game’s Massive Online World

With Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar Games seems to be saying that we’ll never need another video game.  Last month, we saw how much gameplay the single-player experience offered.  Today, there’s a trailer for the online side, and all I can say is, “Holy.  Shit.”  I know that’s not very eloquent, but the online aspect goes far beyond what I imagined.  This isn’t just shootout deathmatches where someone who has way too much freetime will dominate every single game and proceed to sling racial and homophobic epithets your way.  GTA V will offer heists, races, and a ridiculous amount of customization.  Looking at this trailer, I can’t believe this is actually available on current-gen consoles.

New Gameplay Trailer for GRAND THEFT AUTO V

Until South Park: The Stick of Truth gets a release date, the only new video game I’m counting down to is Grand Theft Auto V.  Aside from the fact that it’s a new GTA game and that’s good enough, it has the unique ability to switch between the three protagonists at any time.  A new gameplay trailer has been released, and it goes further into depth than anything we’ve seen so far (although I had to chuckle at the narrator referring to the three criminal protagonists as “would-be heroes”).  Looking at all there is to do, GTA V may not just be the game of this year.  It could be the game you’re playing for a large portion of next year.  I’m stunned not only at the size of the world, but that it even has its own stock market.

9 New Images from GRAND THEFT AUTO V

This week, all of the attention has been on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 throwing down at E3 (meanwhile, WiiU is in the background all like “We have new Mario!” and everyone else is all like, “Shut up, Nintendo.”).  But the “old” systems are far from dead, and the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will get the year’s biggest game, Grand Theft Auto V.  Rockstar has released nine new images showing off fun stuff like flying planes, scuba diving, and riding a jet ski.  It may not have super-powered graphics of the next-gen consoles, but I think gamers will find a way to cope.  The coping strategy will probably involve getting hookers to service your character, and then killing the hooker to get your money back.

Hit the jump to check out nine new images from the highly-anticipated sequel.  Grand Theft Auto V will be released on September 17th.  Click here to pre-order the Xbox 360 version, and click here to pre-order the PlayStation 3 version.

Rockstar Games Announces Special Edition and Collector’s Edition for GRAND THEFT AUTO V

Most A-list games now come with special editions and collector’s editions.  The special edition costs a little bit more, and throws in some nice gameplay perks with a little swag.  The collector’s edition costs a lot more, comes with everything the special edition has, more gameplay stuff, and then throws in even more swag.  Grand Theft Auto V is no exception.  Everyone who pre-orders will get access to the “Atomic Blimp”.  The special edition comes with a steelbook case, blueprint map, stunt plane, special ability boost, additional weapons, and bonus outfits, tattoos, etc.  The collector’s edition comes with all that stuff along with a New Era “Los Santos” cap, a security deposit bag with logo key, unique vehicles and garage, and custom characters (e.g. Niko Bellic from Grand Theft Auto IV).

Three Trailers for GRAND THEFT AUTO V Highlight Protagonists Michael, Franklin, and Trevor

Rockstar has released three new trailers for Grand Theft Auto V with each trailer focusing on one of the game’s protagonists: Michael, Franklin, and Trevor.  As we previously reported, players will be able to switch between the characters at any point, and as you can see from Trevor’s trailer, there will be some interaction between the protagonists at least as far as Michael and Trevor are concerned.  The trailers also show not only the size of GTA V’s world of Los Santos, but the varying tones.  Michael and Trevor are more on the comic side of the GTA world while Franklin is off in an urban drama.  It will be interesting to see how Rockstar plans to blend all three plotlines into one cohesive story.

Rockstar Games may be reinventing the Grand Theft Auto series by offering three protagonists in the fifth installment, but the studio is sticking to the classic box art design.  Rockstar Games has revealed the box art for Grand Theft Auto V, and it’s the same multi-paneled look gamers have come to know and love.  It also features the three lead criminals: Franklin, Michael, and Trevor.  Of course, this is Grand Theft Auto.  Rockstar could put the game inside of a bear trap, and fans would still be lined-up to buy it at midnight.

If you’re looking for the biggest video game of 2013, it’s probably going to be Grand Theft Auto V.  It’s been the longest wait (5 years), the most main characters (3 that you can switch between at any time), the largest map, and will likely be the biggest seller.  GTA is an event, and with five months until the game is released, Rockstar will continue to roll out the marketing.  Ten new images have been released, and some show off the gorgeous scenery while others give attention to the violence and vehicles.  GTA V is going to be bigger; we’re going to have to wait and see if it’s better.

Rockstar Games Pushes GRAND THEFT AUTO V Back to September 17th

You’re going to have to wait a little longer to kill that hooker and take your money back.  Rockstar Games has announced that they need some more development time on Grand Theft Auto V, and have pushed the game back to September 17th.  This works much better for me since GTA V was originally due out on March 26th, which was the same release date as Bioshock Infinite, and Bioshock was going to win that battle for my time and money.  Does GTA V have George Washington wielding a mini-gun?  Probably not.

New Trailer for GRAND THEFT AUTO V

A new trailer for Grand Theft Auto V has finally been released.  It highlights the three leading characters we told you about last week, and the trailer has the cinematic look and feel the series has become known for along with the signature bits of wry comedy.  If there’s one issue with this trailer, it’s that it’s difficult to tell how much of it is gameplay and how much of it are cut-scenes.  All of it looks like fun, but there’s a big difference between watching your character jump between exploding train cards and actually doing it yourself.

Plenty of New Details and Images from GRAND THEFT AUTO V; Game to Feature 3 Concurrent Protagonists

Unlike other big gaming franchises where there seems to be a new entry every holiday season, it’s been a long wait between Grand Theft Auto games.  Rockstar has done a terrific job keeping Grand Theft Auto V under wraps, but now they’ve made some big reveals about the highly-anticipated sequel.  The most noteworthy announcement is that GTA V has three protagonists, and you can switch between them “at nearly any time.”  There’s also some unsurprising reveals like how the world of “Los Santos” (GTA V’s Los Angeles) will be bigger than Red Dead Redemption, GTA: San Andreas, and GTA IV combined.  While these are neat details, I’m still wondering if the game will be fun.  For all of its care and attention, GTA IV could be incredibly infuriating for stupid reasons like nicking a cop car forcing you to spend 15 minutes ducking the fuzz.  Also, failing a mission meant having to drive back to the start of the mission so you could drive all the way back to where the mission actually takes place (e.g. the bank heist mission, “Three Leaf Clover”).

Hit the jump for more details on Grand Theft Auto V and lots of new images.  A new trailer for the game arrives on Wednesday; click here for the first trailer. GTA V hits stores in Q1 or Q2 2013.

First Trailer for GRAND THEFT AUTO V

by     Posted 2 years, 355 days ago

grand-theft-auto-v-videogame-image-slice-01

Rockstar Games has released the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto V.  Unsurprisingly, it’s big on atmosphere and non-existent on gameplay details, and that’s fine for an announcement trailer.  Once again, it looks like the subtext will be about The American Dream, but this time it’s from the perspective of a guy dreaming about going straight and building a good life for his family.  It’s a set-up for a fine story, but that’s not my concern with GTA V.  My concern is game design, which is where Grand Theft Auto IV fell painfully short.  I’m sure folks will rave about the multiplayer, but the single-player experience is a mess. Restarting your mission from your phone is worthless when you have to drive to your objective anyway.  Your friends are a bunch of tough guys who will get pissy if you don’t go bowling with them.  If you have the audacity to fire your gun or get into a minor traffic accident, expect to run from the cops for the next twenty minutes.  I’m sure GTA V will have a large world (this time it’s based on Los Angeles) and a deep story, but will it be fun?
