After a wildly successful debut this year, The History Channel’s Emmy-nominated series Vikings made its triumph return to Comic-Con with the cast and creator: Travis Fimmel (“Ragnar Lothbrok”), Katheryn Winnick (“Lagertha Lothbrok”), Clive Standen (“Rollo”), George Blagden (“Athelstan”), Gustaf Skarsgard (“Floki”), and Michael Hirst (writer/creator).  The historical drama, inspired by real events and people, follows the life of Ragnar Lodbrok a young warrior whose rise to power made him one of the most legendary Vikings in history, and whose legacy ushered in the Viking Age.

Although we will have to wait until 2014 to see the aftermath of its dramatic season finale, we sat down with Skarsgard and Blagden to discuss the fate of the show’s characters as well as the experience of making season one of Vikings.

History has a scored a few big ratings hits this season, and though its first scripted drama Vikings has not even finished its inaugural run, the cable network has already renewed it for a 10-episode second season.  According to the network, Vikings has been the #1 new cable series in 2013 in terms of viewership, even in its competitive Sunday night slot, averaging around five million viewers.  I reviewed the series as it first aired and found it compelling, especially in the weeks before another gritty period drama, Game of Thrones, returned — although Vikings certainly has its own merits.  Hit the jump for more.

THE WAY BACK Review

The Way Back is filmmaking at its most basic. A lack of any real antagonist or narrator and the minimalistic use of score give this remarkable journey by a band of escapees during the Soviet regime in the ’40s an odd POV style that sometimes feels lost without a compass. With Peter Weir at the helm guiding Colin Ferrell, Saoirse Ronan, Jim Sturgess, and Ed Harris, you expect a powerful synergy to occur. While the core components are there, the inevitable question of the veracity of the escape is still in doubt and hinders the film from overcoming the clichéd miracles that occur during their perilous 4,000-mile trek to freedom. Despite this, the linear narrative that plays out has enough humor and heart to stagger through the awe-inspiring scenery, resulting in a tepid yet entertaining film about the drive for survival.
