New MORTDECAI Posters Feature Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Olivia Munn, Ewan McGregor, and Moustaches

Lionsgate has released four Mortdecai character posters online, and all of them feature the title character’s dapper facial hair.  The film stars Johnny Depp as the roguish Charlie Mortdecai, an art dealer who finds himself in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold (everyone wants Nazi gold these days).  My hope for Mortdecai is that it just manages to be a fun romp rather than a reminder of how hard Depp tries to do wacky characters.

The Films of David Fincher: SE7EN

by     Posted 31 days ago

se7en-review

[With the upcoming release of his new film Gone Girl, I’m taking a look back at the work of director David Fincher.  These articles contain spoilers.]

Where as Alien3 has been forgotten thanks to ignominy, the shadow of the first two Alien movies, and its botched production, Se7en has persevered for almost twenty years if for no other reason than what’s in the fucking box.  Se7en is where David Fincher‘s filmography truly begins, and it’s fitting that a director who self-identifies as cynical should lead with a movie that abhors human nature, massacres the good in more ways than one, and even feels slight reverence towards its heinous killer.  There’s a beauty to the cruelty as the movie presents a stylized realism that taps into a rotting, fetid world but does so without establishing a particular locale, drenching the unnamed city in rain, and sinking the shots into darkness and low angles.

Se7en is where David Fincher finally got to come out and play.  Alien 3 was a trap that became a prison and eventually he just had to flee from the depressing hellhole of that production.  He returned to music videos thinking he would never make another movie again, and when Se7en came along, he went all in on a “meditation on evil and how evil gets on you and you can’t get it off.”   Fincher didn’t return with an open palm.  He came back with a clenched fist.

First MORDECAI Trailer Has Johnny Depp as a Debonair Rapscallion alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Goldblum, and Ewan McGregor

Lionsgate has released the first Mortdecai trailer, and it looks rather amusing.  The film stars Johnny Depp as the roguish Charlie Mortdecai, an art dealer who finds himself in a race to recover a stole painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.  None of those plot details are mentioned in this trailer.  Instead, it quickly conveys the goofy character, and even though this is yet another oddball/eccentric part for Depp, at least it comes off as quite entertaining.

Robert Downey Jr. Hints at Return for IRON MAN 4

by     Posted 93 days ago

I’ve never really expected an Iron Man 4, however naive that may seem.  I really, really liked Iron Man 3.  So far, having not yet seen Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s my favorite film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  And I had always sort of taken the hint that it was the final Iron Man installment for Robert Downey Jr.  It wrapped up his version of Tony Stark’s arc in a way that felt complete to me.  Also, anyone who’s paying attention knows that, exempting his appearance in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, he might be getting too expensive for Marvel.  Blockbuster dealmaking is a complicated game and once an actor is branded with a successful role it gets extremely expensive to keep them onboard after their initial contract expires.

But Robert Downey Jr. isn’t wiping his hands of a potential Iron Man 4 just yet.  Despite Gwyneth Paltrow’s prognostication that a 4th film isn’t in the cards (and Downey himself seeming noncommittal over a year ago), there still might be another go-around for Marvel and the original Tony Stark.  Hit the jump for more on the potential for Robert Downey Jr. returning to Iron Man 4.

THANKS FOR SHARING Review

A striking cinematic portrayal of sex addiction hit screens two years in the form of Steve McQueen‘s Shame.  McQueen’s searing film is unrelenting to the point where it drowns us in the misery of its central character, but at least there’s honesty at the core of the picture.  Director Stuart Blumberg attempts a somewhat lighter tone with Thanks for Sharing, and while that’s not necessarily problematic, he goes about it such a superficial, ham-fisted way as to undermine almost all of the drama.  Putting aside the efficacy of “Anonymous” groups like Sexaholics Anonymous, two-thirds of the movie plays out like a PSA ad but with real actors struggling to sell the horrendous and preachy dialogue.  Blumberg and co-writer Matt Winston‘s script struggles to be anything more than a cheap attempt at easy drama as it prays on addiction rather than making an earnest try at conveying it.

The cast for director David Koepp’s (Premium Rush) crime drama Mortdecai is coming together rather quickly.  Johnny Depp signed on to star in the adaptation of author Kyril Bonfiglioli’s novels just a couple of weeks ago, and now Variety reports that Ewan McGregor and Gwyneth Paltrow are in talks to join the cast.  Depp plays an antihero art dealer who finds himself in “a race to recover a stole painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.”  No word on which characters McGregor or Paltrow would play in the Lionsgate pic, but they are in line to co-star.  Filming is looking to get underway later this year after Depp wraps the musical Into the Woods.

IRON MAN 3 Review

There are almost as many concepts floating around in Iron Man 3 as there are suits of armor.  The only difference is that the armors have a clearly defined purpose.  In an attempt to bring Tony Stark back to basics, his latest outing is a strangely bloated affair that still manages to be an incredibly fun thanks to the hilarious comedy and exhilarating action.  Without question, it’s the funniest and most exciting of the trilogy, but it’s also surrounded by a host of underdeveloped ideas relating to notions of desperation, augmentation, and obfuscation, not to mention the aftershock of The Avengers.  Like riding in one of the Iron Man suits, it’s a bumpy but highly enjoyable ride.

Marvel has released a new clip from Iron Man 3, which shows Tony Stark dealing with the fallout of the events of The Avengers: “Nothing’s been the same since New York.”  Robert Downey Jr. walks the fine line of arrogance and charm better than just about any other actor, but it helps for us to see Stark in a vulnerable moment, as he is here with Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow).

Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau, and Ben Kingsley also star.  Directed by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Iron Man 3 opens May 3.  Watch the clip after the jump.

The U.S. premiere of Iron Man 3 was held last night in Los Angeles, and pretty much everyone from the Marvel Cinematic Universe walked the red carpet.  Though the various actors, actresses, directors, and producers didn’t exactly have time for lengthy interviews while making their way into the theater, a couple of them did drop some interesting tidbits about some upcoming Marvel films.  Gwyneth Paltrow, for one, seems to think that there isn’t going to be an Iron Man 4, and Joss Whedon provided a few more updates on The Avengers 2, even hinting at two new characters he says are in the film.  Hit the jump to read on.
