I used to love My Little Pony as a kid, but never realized it was still so popular until I started going to San Diego Comic Con.  If you want one of those My Little Pony SDCC exclusives, you better get to that convention center at the crack of dawn, if not earlier, because people go nuts for them.

Knowing that, it comes as no surprise that Hasbro Studios is making a push to bring My Little Pony’s popularity to the big screen in 2017 with Ice Age: Continental Drift’s Joe Ballarini penning the script.  Hit the jump for more on the upcoming My Little Pony movie.

Transformers has been a household name for 30 years. While there have been many iterations – the original ‘G1’ series of the ‘80s, the reedited ‘G2’ in the early ‘90s, the CGI wizardry of Beast Wars and Beast Machines, and the Japanese/American co-productionTransformers: Armada – the rise of Michael Bays tetralogy has – if you will forgive the pun – transformed and expanded the storied franchise to the point where Hasbro held its own convention-within-a-convention this morning to celebrate the many, many, many ancillary versions of the brand.

The breakfast expo included a Transformers museum, footage from multiple concurrent TV series, a build-your-own-Transformer buffet, a beta test of a free MMOG, a variety of nostalgic and ironic repaints, a preview of upcoming toy lines, a selection of non-toy ancillaries, and even a few of the brand’s shepherding executives. Hit the jump for details, pictures, and video.

Paramount Might Be Planning to Release TRANSFORMERS 5 in 2017

The fourth Transformers movie, Transformers: Age of Extinction, isn’t due out until June 27th, but it won’t be the last one in the franchise.  No sequels have officially been announced, but no one at Paramount is going to say, “You know what, guys?  I think the Transformers movies have had a good run here.  Let’s go out on top.  We need to give this franchise the dignity and respect it deserves, let it lay low, and really take the time to develop a good, strong story.”

The studio hasn’t revealed future plans for the series, but we could be seeing the fifth installment in 2017.  According to TFW2005, Hasbro, the company behind the Transformers toys and a partner in the movies, has released promo material with “Q2 2017” alongside a Transformers 5 placeholder logo.  2017 could even be on the late side since there was only a two-year gap between the first three movies (2007, 2009, 2011, respectively).  Why wait three years for more exploding space robots when you could have them in two?  Hit the jump to check out Hasbro’s promo image, which teases a Transformers 5 release date.

Hasbro brought a wide variety of KRE-O newcomers to Toy Fair this year, representing characters from the Transformers franchise as well as G.I. Joe and Dungeons & Dragons.

Hasbro is clearly ramping things up for the June 27, 2014 release of Transformers: Age of Extinction because those characters were easily the most striking of the bunch.  The display included all 24 unique Kreon figures inspired by the movie as well as the Kreon Micro Changers Combiners assortments, four-figure sets that unite to form one larger robot.  The G.I. Joe line-up showed off loads of new Kreon characters including Lowlight, Atomic Man, Lady Jaye, Scrap-Iron, Night Creeper and loads more as well as the extensive Terror Drome building set.  And as for Dungeons & Dragons, that brand new line rocks 75 different Kreon characters as well as a number of other play elements all designed to reflect the experience of the fantasy game by facilitating competitive action battling.  Catch our images of all three lines after the jump.

Toy Fair 2014 doesn’t officially kick off until tomorrow, but Hasbro opted to beat the rush by holding an afternoon of previews and tours where we got the chance to check out loads of their upcoming toy lines and prototypes, a number of which come from the Transformers franchise.

With Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction heading towards a June 27, 2014 release, typically, Hasbro’s Transformers team would focus all of their effort on delivering movie-specific toys.  However, this year, on top of the designs directly connected to the film, we’ll also get a number of other figures associated with their classic generation line.  By the end of the year, we’ll have gotten 73 new Transformers figures including Crosshairs, the Dinobots Slug and Scorn, Drift, Gridlock, Galvatron, Nightbeat, the fan-created character Windblade, one-step changers and loads more.  Starring Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Kelsey GrammerStanley TucciT.J. With the massive Star Wars film franchise expansion beginning on December 18, 2015 with the release of Star Wars: Episode VII, there are bound to be loads of movie-inspired toys on the way, but for now, Hasbro is revving its engines using preexisting film staples as well as the brand new CGI animated series, Star Wars Rebels, to continue to build the toy line.

The Star Wars Rebel collection introduces us to new characters including the Rebel heroes Ezra, Kanan and Zeb, as well as the villain the Inquisitor along with his lightsaber, which offers three ways to play – single blade, double blade and force disc form.  Over in the Black Series we’ve got six-inch figures of Luke and Anakin Skywalker as well as a number of 3.75-inch newcomers including Yoda, Darth Vader and more.  Also well worth noting is the brand new Star Wars Command line, which is essentially the Star Wars version of those little army men.  There’s an enormous selection of tiny characters and vehicles that ultimately, as one host joked during the presentation, give kids the tools to wage war.  He laughed and noted, “This isn’t Star Hugs!  It’s Star Wars!”  Hit the jump for over 40 pictures of the Command line and more.

Guardians of the Galaxy certainly stole most of the spotlight at Hasbro’s Toy Fair 2014 preview event, but there were also items from a number of other hot Marvel properties on hand as well.

The Captain America: The Winter Soldier super soldier gear was a centerpiece of the Marvel exhibit as one of few items that could be played with.  There were also high-end figurines of Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), The Winter Solider (Sebastian Stan) and The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) on display.  A number of other Avengers made an appearance at the event as well including Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.).  Right next door it was all about The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with a Silly String slinging booth as well as a slew of variant figurines of the hero.  Hit the jump to check it all out for yourself.

We’re still over five months away from the August 1, 2014 debut of Guardians of the Galaxy, but Hasbro is already making waves via the film’s monumental pre-release hype.  We just showed you Hasbro’s recreation of the first film still, but earlier today, Collider got the chance to check out those toys in person.

Not only were Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) all on hand at Hasbro’s Toy Fair 2014 preview event, but so were Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), Nova, Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou), and Sakaaran, too.  Check out over 30 photos of all of those characters as well as Star-Lord’s Milano and Rocket Raccoon’s Warbird after the jump.

You can always trust the toy people jump the gun when it comes to information on a movie.  The merchandise is developed incredibly early because it’s one of the most important revenue streams for blockbusters.  It also doesn’t have to adhere to final plots, although sometimes they do.  We’ve received Hasbro’s listing of toys for Guardians of the Galaxy, a property ideally suited for a toyline.  It’s not just one protagonist.  There are five (Star Lord, Drax, Gamora, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon) and plenty of supporting characters.  As anyone who’s been to a toy store knows, just because an action figure is on the rack, it doesn’t mean it’s in the movie (e.g., War Machine isn’t in Iron Man 3).

Hit the jump for a list of toys that will be attached to Guardians of the Galaxy, but consider yourself warned about possible spoilers.  The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker, Djimon HounsouPeter Serafinowicz, and Benicio Del ToroGuardians of the Galaxy opens August 1, 2014.

Hasbro threw a party tonight in advance of New York Comic-Con, and they brought out all the toys.  The first Transformers: Age of Extinction images focused on cars, humans, and explosions over Autobots.  So first up is the Optimus Prime toy—we are told this is a good representation of what Optimus will look like in the sequel.

A bunch of villains were on display at the Amazing Spider-Man 2 table including Electro, the primary bad guy in the sequel.  The toy version of The Winter Soldier from Captain America: The Winter Soldier notably comes with Precision Strike.  And Lucasfilm released an image of the packaging they’ll use for Star Wars: Rebels.  See it all after the jump.

In what sounds like a truly awesome job, Mike Vogel has headed all development for Hasbro Studios, the Los Angeles-based production division of Hasbro, Inc., since March 2011, shepherding many of the studio’s well-known brands from inception through success on The Hub, a joint venture between Hasbro and Discovery Communications, and on networks reaching more than 160 countries, globally.  He works closely with producers, writers and artists, as well as independent entities, to re-imagine, reinvent and reignite the company’s beloved brands while collaborating on possible toys, products and licensing.  Essentially, he makes a living being a big kid and bringing his childhood geek fantasies to life.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Mike Vogel talked about what his day-to-day duties entail, what the biggest surprise has been, in terms of toy sales, how often they decide to rotate or add characters on their shows, how much they listen to fans to make sure their ideas are also incorporated, what they’re doing to reach the comic book movie audience, that they’ll have some big news and really cool stuff for fans at Comic-Con, the coolest toys and merchandise that he has in his office, the challenges of developing new properties, and the possibility of a Candyland cartoon or a KREO animated series.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

If you’re a toy collector, Toy Fair is a very big deal.  Every February in New York City, all the toy manufactures unveil all their upcoming toy lines and there are always a number of surprises.  This year, one of the big surprises involved Star Wars.  For those who are unaware, since 1977, Star Wars action figures have always come in two sizes: 3.75″ and 12″ inch.  But for the first time since the series launched, Hasbro is introducing a 6-inch scale version and they’re called it “The Black Series.”  Hasbro claims this new line features a higher level of articulation and they’ll be in store shelves this fall with a retail price of $19.99 each.   While you may wonder why make a change now, I think it’s an easy answer: money.   The fact is, Hasbro has already produced every character that’s ever been seen in any Star Wars movie.  By launching a new 6″ line, they can try and get collectors to buy every character again, but in a larger format and with a higher price point.   It’s a smart business move.

So if you’re curious what the new 6″ series looks like, hit the jump.  We’ve also got more pictures of other Star Wars toys plus G.I. Joe: Retaliation toys.

One of the new toys lines that Hasbro is releasing this year is called Kre-o.  While Hasbro will never officially say this, it’s essentially their version of Lego.  At yesterday’s media preview for Toy Fair 2013, Hasbro showed off a number of upcoming Kre-o toys from Star Trek, G.I Joe, and Transformers.  With the popularity of Lego, I totally understand why Hasbro would create their own version.  However, collectors are an interesting bunch, and I’m curious if Lego fans will give Kre-o a chance or feel like Hasbro is invading their turf.  We’ll know in the next few months.

While most of my knowledge about Transformers comes from the Michael Bay movies, I know the Hasbro toy line is incredibly popular with both kids and collectors.  So when I asked Samantha Cheirif to cover Hasbro’s preview of Toy Fair 2013 yesterday, she took a bunch of pictures of all the new Transformers toys.  While I have no idea what toys go with what line, one toy did impress me: the 24″ tall triple changer Metroplex.  Billed as the biggest Transformer toy ever, with an estimated $125 price tag, the toy looks very cool.  Hit the jump to check out over 30 images and look for more Toy Fair coverage all day.
