Helen Mirren’s fascination with wanting to be a French actress leads to a bold and captivating performance in The Hundred-Foot Journey as Madame Mallory, the exacting chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a fancy Michelin-starred French restaurant in the south of France.  Her icy protests against Maison Mumbai, the new Indian restaurant across the road from her own establishment, escalate into a heated competition between the two restaurants until she recognizes her culinary rival Hassan Kadam’s (Manish Dayal) gift as a chef and his passion for French haute cuisine.  Opening August 8th, the film directed by Lasse Hallström also stars Charlotte Le Bon and Om Puri.

At the film’s recent press day, Mirren talked about the improvisational set, the pleasure of acting opposite the renowned Puri, what they share in common, how she approaches a role, what she looks for in the projects she chooses and why the director is important, how she likes to change things up and alternate between big movies and low budget films, her fascination with French culture, her favorite French film, Woman in Gold, which she’s currently filming with director Simon Curtis, and her upcoming biopic, Trumbo, with Bryan Cranston about blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.  Hit the jump to read the interview.

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY Featurette: Producers Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey Discuss Fusing Two Opposite Cultures

hundred-foot-journey-featurette

DreamWorks has released a new The Hundred-Foot Journey featurette for director Lasse Hallström’s (Chocolat) adaptation of the Richard C. Morais novel of the same name.  The story centers the rivalry between an Indian restaurant that is 100 feet away from a three-Michelin-star restaurant in France, with the eccentric French chef (Helen Mirren) reluctantly forming a bond with the young Indian boy (Manish Dayal) whose family owns the quaint Indian restaurant.  Based on the trailer, the pic looks to be a nice, international story in the vein of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with a bounty of food porn to boot—and I’m perfectly fine with that.  Not everything needs to be deadly serious or colorfully explosive, and as producers Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey explain in this featurette, the film also touches on the great gaps that surface between cultures and how there’s more that unites us than divides us.

Hit the jump to watch the Hundred-Foot Journey featurette, which is anchored by Spielberg and Winfrey discussing the pic.  The film also stars Om Puri and Charlotte Le Bon and opens on August 8th.

DreamWorks has released the first trailer, poster, and images for the drama The Hundred-Foot Journey.  The story centers on the Kadam family, who set up an Indian restaurant in a small village in the south of France, and begin a rivalry with the nearby classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren).  However, this rivalry eventually turns into friendship as the two establishments begin to learn and appreciate the other’s cuisine.  If the film looks like it’s based on an Oprah-approved book, that’s because it is.  She’s producing the film along with Steven Spielberg, who previously worked with Winfrey on The Color Purple.  As for the film, it looks like it could be this year’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, i.e. a nice movie for older people.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards took place earlier this evening, and the performance-centric American Hustle won the big Best Ensemble prize.  That wasn’t a huge shock given the amount of talent on display in David O. Russell’s film and the fact that Hustle landed an Oscar nomination in every single acting category.  Elsewhere at the SAGs, Matthew McConaughey continues to look more and more like an Oscar winner with another Best Actor trophy, 12 Years a Slave breakout Lupita Nyong’O won Best Supporting Actress, and Cate Blanchett and Jared Leto won their umpteenth Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor awards, respectively.  On the TV side of things, Breaking Bad won Best Dramatic Ensemble and Modern Family won Best Comedic Ensemble.

RED 2 Blu-ray Review

red-2-image-slice

Red 2 is a very obvious film.  It’s pleasant enough, but you know what you’re getting, which is old actors engaging in Bond-esque behavior.  It’s all fluffy and light, and seems geared towards Sunday afternoon cable viewing.  On that level it delivers.  But whether it’s demeaning or charming that so many talented performers are doing something so beneath them is up to the viewer.  Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren lead the cast and my review of Red 2 follows after the jump.
