The Screen Actors Guild Awards took place earlier this evening, and the performance-centric American Hustle won the big Best Ensemble prize.  That wasn’t a huge shock given the amount of talent on display in David O. Russell’s film and the fact that Hustle landed an Oscar nomination in every single acting category.  Elsewhere at the SAGs, Matthew McConaughey continues to look more and more like an Oscar winner with another Best Actor trophy, 12 Years a Slave breakout Lupita Nyong’O won Best Supporting Actress, and Cate Blanchett and Jared Leto won their umpteenth Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor awards, respectively.  On the TV side of things, Breaking Bad won Best Dramatic Ensemble and Modern Family won Best Comedic Ensemble.

RED 2 Blu-ray Review

Red 2 is a very obvious film.  It’s pleasant enough, but you know what you’re getting, which is old actors engaging in Bond-esque behavior.  It’s all fluffy and light, and seems geared towards Sunday afternoon cable viewing.  On that level it delivers.  But whether it’s demeaning or charming that so many talented performers are doing something so beneath them is up to the viewer.  Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren lead the cast and my review of Red 2 follows after the jump.

Casting is firming up for DreamWorks’ adaptation of the Richard C. Morais novel The Hundred-Foot Journey.  The film centers on the rivalry between an Indian restaurant that is 100 feet away from a three-Michelin-star restaurant in France, with the eccentric French chef reluctantly forming a bond with the young Indian boy whose family owns the quaint Indian restaurant.  When we first reported that Lasse Hallstrom (Chocolat) was going to direct, we learned that Helen Mirren was circling the role of the French chef Madame Mallory.  Now Variety confirms that Mirren has indeed signed on to star in the pic, with Manish Dayal (90210, Switched at Birth) set to play the Indian boy.

Hallstrom is directing from a script by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises), and the film boasts Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Juliet Blake as producers.  DreamWorks recently dated the pic for release on August 8, 2014, so one expects filming should get underway either later this year or early next year.  Hit the jump to read a synopsis for the book.

Monsters University will be here soon, and I like what I’m seeing.  I like it so much that I’ve seen enough.  Even though we post plenty of trailers, clips, and featurettes on the site, I don’t watch all of them if I’m already interested in the film.  That stuff is for the people who need more convincing.  So if you’re still unsure about Monsters University, we have seven clips and 13 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage featuring the cast from Pixar’s upcoming prequel recording their lines.

Lasse Hallstrom to Direct THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY; Helen Mirren May Star

by     Posted 321 days ago

Movies about chefs seem to be all the rage at the moment.  Bradley Cooper and Jon Favreau are currently prepping two separate films about professional cooks, both called Chef, and now Chocolat director Lasse Hallstrom has been tapped to direct an adaptation of the Richard C. Morais novel The Hundred-Foot Journey for DreamWorks.  The story centers on the rivalry between an Indian restaurant that is 100 feet away from a three-Michelin-star restaurant in France, with the eccentric French chef reluctantly forming a bond with the young Indian boy whose family owns the quaint Indian restaurant.  Casting has yet to be confirmed, but Deadline reports that Helen Mirren will be playing the French chef Madame Mallory.

Steven Knight (Eastern Promises) wrote the screenplay adaptation and the film boasts Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Juliet Blake as producers.  Hallstrom most recently helmed the Nicholas Sparks adaptation Safe Haven, but the Cider House Rules filmmaker certainly knows his way around a touching dramedy.  Hit the jump to read a synopsis for the book.

Final Trailer for Pixar’s MONSTERS UNIVERSITY

by     Posted 325 days ago

Disney-Pixar has released the final trailer for Monsters University. The prequel shows how Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) became best friends during their time at college. I’ve been a bit wary about the prequel, but this trailer put those doubts to rest. The film looks incredibly funny but also has heart. This goes along with the positive buzz I’ve been hearing, and it looks like Monsters University could be the movie that gets Pixar back on track to the high quality we’ve come to expect from them.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also features the voices of Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren, John Krasinski, Nathan Fillion, Bonnie Hunt, Dave Foley, Sean Hayes, Joel Murray, Peter Sohn, Aubrey Plaza, Tyler Labine, Bobby Moynihan, Julie Sweeney, Alfred Molina, Beth Behrs, and of course, John Ratzenberger. Monsters University opens in 3D on June 21st.

New posters have been released from The Lone Ranger, Red 2, Star Trek Into Darkness, and I, Frankenstein.  Briefly, The Lone Ranger international poster has the Lone Ranger in danger of falling into Helena Bonham Carter‘s cleavage, the gang is all there in the Red 2 poster, the Enterprise is still seriously screwed in the latest poster for Star Trek Into Darkness, and then there’s the first poster for I, Frankenstein.  It’s a “motion poster”, but it will be holographic when you see it at your local theater.  It doesn’t have a close-up of Aaron Eckhart as the monster, but at a distance, he’s the most handsome iteration of the creature to date.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  The Lone Ranger opens on July 3rd.  Red 2 opens July 19th.  Star Trek Into Darkness opens in IMAX 3D on Wednesday and in 2D and 3D on Thursday.  I, Frankenstein opens in 3D on January 24th. [Update: The Star Trek Into Darkness poster was not approved by the studio, and we have removed it at their request.]

Disney has released a new trailer for the Monsters, Inc. prequel Monsters University.  The pic focuses on the college years of Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sully (John Goodman), and this new full-length trailer reveals the film’s plot.  The Revenge of the Nerds-esque story finds Mike and Sully joining a fraternity of outcasts, as all of the Greek houses must compete against each other in the Scare Games, which carry dire consequences for the losers.  The film looks like it could be Pixar’s most purely fun movie yet, and early reactions from the screening at CinemaCon had many praising the pic’s heart.  If you missed any of Dave’s coverage from his visit to Pixar, be sure to check out his review from seeing 40 minutes of footage, 35 things to know about the film, and his interview with director Dan Scanlon.
