HESHER Review

Grief is an ugly, raw, complicated, and necessary emotion.  I’ve never been a big fan of the Kübler-Ross Model (also known as the Five Stages of Grief) because it seems like something constructed more to comfort those dealing with the grief-stricken rather than an honest explanation of the griever’s emotions.  It says “What stage are you at because you’re kind of bumming the rest of us out.”  Hesher gives a giant middle finger to a pat, easily digestible notion of grief and instead throws the viewer into the violent, angry emotions that arise when grieving over the loss of a loved one.  Unfortunately, it never goes much deeper than that and the thematic simplicity keeps Joseph Gordon-Levitt from giving an honest performance because he’s stuck playing a contrived one-dimensional character who merely serves to illustrate a point.  Then the film, which at least had the consistency to hammer home its single theme, shoots itself in the foot with an ending unworthy of its tone and attitude.

Rainn Wilson Talks HESHER, SUPER, GALAXY QUEST, and His Jay Roach Produced Renaissance Fair Movie

Rainn Wilson Hesher interview slice

With writer/director Spencer Susser’s Hesher getting released this weekend, I recently got to sit down with the cast and Susser to talk about the film.  Before going any further, if you haven’t seen the trailer, I suggest checking it out here.  While the summer is filled with huge explosions and movies that cost hundreds of millions of dollars, I promise you…none of them feature a main character as crazy as Hesher.  Playing the lead is Joseph Gordon-Levitt and it’s an awesome performance. The film also stars Rainn Wilson, Natalie Portman, and Devin Brochu.

While I already posted my video interviews with Susser and Gordon-Levitt, I’ve got one more and it’s with Rainn Wilson.  During the interview we talked about the positive response to Super, what attracted him to Hesher, what was it like on set, and we also talked about what’s the last video game he’s played, does he ever get recognized from being in Galaxy Quest, and what is he working on now.  Hit the jump to watch.

Spencer Susser Hesher interview slice

With writer/director Spencer Susser’s Hesher getting released this weekend, I recently got to speak with the filmmaker about directing his first feature after spending the last decade directing shorts.  Before going any further, if you haven’t seen the trailer, I suggest watching it here. Definitely recommended.

During the interview, Susser and I talked about the challenges of getting his film made, how did he land Metallica and why did he want their music, the editing process, casting the movie, and reveals he’s writing his short film, I Love Sarah Jane, as a feature.  Hit the jump to watch.  You can also watch my video interview with Gordon-Levitt here.

Joseph Gordon Levitt interview HESHER slice

With writer/director Spencer Susser’s Hesher getting released next week, earlier today I got to sit down with the cast and Susserb to talk about the film.  Before going any further, if you haven’t seen the trailer, I suggest checking it out here.  While the summer is filled with huge explosions and movies that cost hundreds of millions of dollars, I promise you…none of them feature a main character as crazy as Hesher.  Playing the lead is Joseph Gordon-Levitt and he again demonstrates why many consider him to be one of the best actors in Hollywood.   Trust me, Hesher is worth seeing just to watch Gordon-Levitt’s performance.

During my interview with Gordon-Levitt earlier today, we discussed how he got involved in Hesher and how he prepared for the role, will he return as Cobra Commander in the sequel to G.I. Joe (he won’t), he talks about Rian Johnson’s Looper, how can he top his amazing monologue on Saturday Night Live, what’s his karaoke song, and he provides an interesting comparison/contrast between Christopher Nolan and Hesher‘s writer/director Spencer Susser.

And for all of you wondering why he didn’t talk about The Dark Knight Rises, as you watch the interview you’ll hear me ask him about it…but he turned the question around.  All the journalists I spoke with told me that he wouldn’t answer any Dark Knight questions.  Nolan has taught him well.

New HESHER Trailer Cut by Writer/Director Spencer Susser

Most directors don’t cut trailers for their own movies.  They don’t have the time and studios pay millions of dollars to companies whose sole purpose is to cut a trailer that will appeal to the widest audience possible regardless of whether or not that trailer is an accurate representation of the movie it’s marketing.  But that is not so with the official trailer for Hesher that was cut by the film’s writer and director Spencer Susser.  If I can judge Hesher by its trailer, then I’ll have no idea what to make of Hesher but at least it’s an accurate misunderstanding.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and a statement of support by star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  The film also stars Devin Brochu, Rainn Wilson, and Natalie Portman.  Hesher opens May 13th.

First Trailer for HESHER Starring Devin Brochu, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Natalie Portman, and Rainn Wilson

Hesher first premiered at Sundance 2010 over a year ago, and was quickly picked up by Newmarket Films.  Since then, Joseph-Gordon Levitt upped his star status to Inception level, and Natalie Portman is a newly minted Oscar nominee.  But it’s taken awhile for Hesher, directed by Spencer Susser, to get to the screen.  Perhaps because of the rough subject material: Gordon-Levitt plays an apathetic loner pyromaniac who inserts himself into the life of T.J. (Devin Brochu), a young boy that moved into his grandma’s house with his father (Rainn Wilson) after T.J.’s mother died.  Heavy stuff — not the easiest sell.

However, if this new trailer is any indication, Hesher is at least worth a look as a major showcase for Mr. Gordon-Levitt.  Watch it after the break.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Video Interview INCEPTION

One of my favorite actors is Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  While some of you might only know his work from the hit NBC show 30 Rock From the Sun, over the past decade he’s delivered some great performances in such films as The Lookout, Brick, Mysterious Skin, Stop-Loss, and I even loved his work as Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.  So when I found out I’d be getting an exclusive interview with Gordon-Levitt for Inception, needless to say I was thrilled.  Thankfully, he could not have been nicer, and while my interview was set up for print (meaning just audio), he was totally on board with me using video.

During the spoiler free interview we discussed how he got involved in Inception, what he had to do to read the script, how he trained to do 99% of the stunts, his initial meeting with Christopher Nolan, what it was like to do wire work for 3 weeks, he explains how you can appreciate Inception on many levels, and he discussed future projects like Looper, Hesher, I’m With Cancer (Live With It), G.I. Joe 2, and a lot more.  It’s a great interview, so hit the jump to check it out:

While I’ll have the entire interview online the week of release, I wanted to post what he said today about Hesher, Looper and I’m With Cancer (which is going to be retitled).  The quick info is Hesher has not been renamed to Rebel, he thinks Rian Johnson’s Looper is going to film early next year, and he’s not sure what is up with the sequel to G.I. Joe.  Hit the jump to watch part of the interview.  Look for a lot more coverage on Inception very soon:

Sundance 2010: Buyers Purchase TWELVE, HESHER and THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT

Hesher_movie_image slice Portman.jpg

With Sundance wrapping up this weekend, buyers are finally picking up some of films that premiered at the Festival.  In the last 24 hours, Joel Schumacher’s Twelve, Spencer Susser’s Hesher and Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right have been purchased by Hannover House, Newmarket Films and Focus Features.

I’ve seen two of the three films (Twelve and Hesher) and am not surprised that either sold.  While I didn’t care for Twelve, it’s about upper East Side rich kids in New York City and it stars Chace Chawford from Gossip Girl – so it’s an easy sell.  Hesher has an awesome performance from Joseph Gordon Levitt who has some great dialogue to work with.  And The Kids Are All Right has a great cast featuring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutcherson and Mark Ruffalo.  The film is about two teenaged children conceived by artificial insemination that get the notion to seek out their birth father and introduce him into the family life that their two mothers have built for them.

This weekend will see which films win the big Awards, so look for more films to sell soon.  We’ve been provided press releases for the sales of Hesher and The Kids Are All Right, so hit the jump if you want to read them:

First Images from HESHER – Premiering at Sundance 2010 – Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Natalie Portman

With Sundance 2010 a little over a month away, over the next few weeks, we are going to be posting a ton of images from all the films premiering at the festival.  While I’d love to tell you about the buzz on some of the Sundance films, almost none of them have been seen outside of the people at Sundance who make the decisions.  That’s why posting these first look images is always so much fun, as this is the first time most of us have gotten any info on these movies and we can use the images and synopses to try and guess if the films will be good or bad.  Of course with a film like Hesher (directed by Spencer Susser) – which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman – I’m pretty sure this will be a film worth checking out.  Hit the jump for the synopsis and the images.  Look for a lot more Sundance stuff from now till the festival:

Competition Line-up Announced for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival

The Sundance Film Festival is where some of the great films of the year will get their first viewings, and if you don’t believe me, here’s just some of the great films this year that made their debut at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival: Precious, World’s Greatest Dad, Big Fan, Bronson, Moon and even (500) Days of Summer, which I didn’t care for but made a big splash.

The festival is where buzz starts happening and now Sundance has released the list of which films will be in competition for 2010.  Keep in mind that there are plenty of other films which play out of competition and can be just as great.  But some of the big names fighting for the crown are the Allen Ginsberg obscenity trial film Howl starring General Hospital’s James Franco, Hesher starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo’s directing debut Sympathy for Delicious, and then there are separate categories for domestic documentaries, foreign documentaries, and foreign narrative films and who knows what great treasures will be among those.  I’m sure we’ll hear from those lucky bastards who are attending.

Hit the jump for the full list of the films in contention.  We’ll bring you a list of films playing out of competition once we have it.

Exclusive Interview: Joseph Gordon-Levitt on (500) DAYS OF SUMMER

All child actors should look at the success of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and know that not only is there potentially a future for them as adults, but that if they work at it and choose smart projects, they can be one of the best actors working today.  Gordon-Levitt is an incredibly short guy and it was a joy talking to him about his newest film “(500) Days of Summer” along with other topics like bringing this film as well as short he directed to Sundance, an online collaborative art project called hitRECord and playing a big baddie in the upcoming “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”.  Hit the jump to read the full interview.
